All the Presidents’ wives

posted at 2:01 pm on September 9, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

One of the latest distractions in the presidential campaign – or at least an attempt at a distraction – came in the form of a recent interview on Iowa’s KWQC TV6 news with Ann Romney. In it, the reporter attempted to gin up some ratings by tossing out a few “hot button” social issue questions to Mitt’s wife. It was a game attempt to see if they could stir up some controversy by getting the candidate’s wife to differ with her husband on elements of the social conservative platform, or at least drag the topic off the economy. It didn’t end well for the reporter.

Ann Romney told KWQC TV6 news Friday that birth control and gay marriage are issues that “distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election.” Mrs. Romney says the election is about “the economy and jobs.” …

When asked if she believes a lesbian mother should be allowed to marry her partner, Mrs. Romney said, “I’m not going to talk about the specific issues. I’m going to let my husband speak on issues.”

When asked if she believes that employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control, Mrs. Romney said “Again, you’re asking me questions that are not about what this election is going to be about. This election is going to be about the economy and jobs.”

“I’m here to really just talk about my husband and what kind of husband and father he is and, you know, those [birth control and gay marriage] are hot-button issues that distract from what the real voting issue is going to be at this election.”

Doug Mataconis smells something rotten.

We’ve seen episodes like this before. Reporters have asked Barbara Bush, and Elizabeth Dole, and Laura Bush, and Cindy McCain their opinion on these hot button social issues, and they only do it for one reason. It has nothing to do with uncovering some relevant fact about the man who is actually running for President, but with trying to create a “story” by attempting to uncover some area where the candidate and his spouse may disagree on these issues. Even if that’s the case, who the heck cares? Ann Romney is an adult who is entitled to her own opinions, and she’s also entitled to refuse to be used as a pawn by a reporter trying to create a controversy out of something completely irrelevant. If you want to know something relevant about birth control and the race for the Presidency, ask Mitt Romney or his campaign. Asking his wife for her personal opinion is just idiotic, and it’s so far from being good journalism that it isn’t even funny.

In this case, Doug is exactly correct. Clearly the Democrats (and many of their allies in the media) were taken by surprise at how effective Ann Romney has been as a surrogate and speaker on her husband’s behalf, not to mention her incredible popularity with voters. But as with all family members of politicians, Ann has more options than her husband. Should she wish to not be involved in the campaign, the media has no right to badger her. And if she does want to campaign, she is free to set her own agenda as to what she chooses to discuss. We, as voters, are entitled to ask Mitt Romney any questions we wish when evaluating him for the job he seeks. But Ann Romney’s positions on the issues are her own. She won’t be making policy once Mitt is in office, and if she chooses to show the back of her hand to a reporter trying to pump some venom into the news cycle, that’s her choice as well. She’s there to talk about the man… her husband and the father of their children. And apparently that’s all she’s going to talk about.

I have to admit, the R&R team is clearly looking several moves ahead in this game of political chess. A moment on local TV which could have turned into yet another kerfuffle was fairly deftly swatted aside.

Dark Star on September 9, 2012 at 2:26 PM

The first lady wields absolutely no influence in the White House and her opinions can give us no insight into those of man she married, who became one with the GOP platform the instant he accepted its nomination. The first lady should remain a total enigma and shame on the reporter who wasted his important opportunity to ask her about how wonderful her family is.

That’s great, but when you have a base that couldn’t roast marshmallows, it doesn’t mean much.

Breitbart.com…

Fact Check: First Lady’s False Fairy Tale of Struggle

First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years–about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out” and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale–however well-delivered–was one great, big, colorful lie.

Ann Romney will make a very classy first lady, that in itself is enough to excite the base. Is Mitt as conservative as I would have liked, no. But he is our nominee and so far he’s been one step ahead of the Chicago dirt campaign.

Hello, Dark Star.

I agree with you that when a politician declares that he ‘likes’ his opponent in any way, its simply an expedient to keep the focus on the opponents performance in office, rather than allow the debate or the campaign to be shifted to a matter of personal attack on the opponents character.

Its very savvy of the Romney campaign to rebuff these obvious attempts to couch this campaign in terms of personal mudslinging.

U2denver on September 9, 2012 at 3:37 PM

The Media is the message here.

They are desperately doing everything in their power to help Obama win the election. They are (and have been for the last 50+ years) doing everything in their power and at any cost to their credibility to bring America to its knees and force it to become a socialist state.

The fact that they are so biased and so willing to lie (by commission or omission) is astounding. What is even more astounding is that we conservatives don’t recognize the true enemy or appreciate the breadth of its power.

justltl on September 9, 2012 at 3:50 PM

Nope. Jazz is just applying the same rules to Ann Romney as the MSM has laid out for Michelle Obama. I know intellectual consistency is a hard concept for the vile progs to grasp, but there it is — you can’t argue the EXACT OPPOSITE for Ann that you argued for Michelle.

Well, technically, you *can* argue it, but you look like a fool doing it & we don’t have to pretend it’s not rank hypocrisy on your part.

Indeed. It’s long past time that the GOP does something about the liberal press and their endless gotcha questions and demolishes them every chance they get. I’m long past tired of watching our side wimp out and either respond weakly or not at all. Ann Romney did well, and she should keep on doing so, and others should follow her example. LOL. When was featured DNC-convention speaker Michelle Obama asked her position on partial-birth abortion? Or her opinions about the morality of the Five Trillion Dollars in new debt her husband has helped to heap upon the nation? I must have missed that article.

All I’ve seen for the past four years are fawning articles that gush over Michelle Obama’s “beauty” and “style” and ask her hard-hitting questions like who is her favorite designer, and what is the toughest thing about living in the White House with two wonderful young daughters.

Michelle Obama has volunteered to “swim in the political pool” for years, but no reporters seem interested in pinning down her positions on controversial issues.

Hmmmmmmmm. Whatever could account for the different treatment of the two women? I wonder . . . .

AZCoyote on September 9, 2012 at 4:22 PM

When asked if she believes that employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control, Mrs. Romney said “Again, you’re asking me questions that are not about what this election is going to be about. This election is going to be about the economy and jobs.”

She missed an opportunity here. She should have said that she (and her husband) support protecting First Amendment rights. To say that this is not part of the election is wrong. It’s most definitely part of the election: Do we allow the government to run rampant over people’s consciences and freedom to express their religious beliefs or not?

I support Romney and I like Mrs. Romney very much, but failing to address the importance of protecting the First Amendment and religious freedom is a misstep.

dukecitygirl on September 9, 2012 at 5:02 PM

You look at the article from KWQC and you immediately get the idea that it is a hit piece. They highlight the points they were trying to hit Ann with along with poll results showing the Republicans to be minorly at odds with whatever direction the majority in society are marching at the moment.

You read the interview and it looks even worse. The reporter isn’t paying attention to one thing Romney is saying — he’s got his agenda, and he’s just going down it one item at a time. It’s OK to have an agenda, but don’t expect your opponent to follow it — and you mustn’t get upset if they don’t — for, after all, they are your opponent.

Now, I really like this part of Ann’s interview:

Ann Romney: And, frankly, the President said four years ago that if he doesn’t turn this economy around he’s going to be looking at a one-term presidency. And I frankly believe that Mitt is the person that is so going to be focused on jobs and job creation and making sure that women’s economic prosperity is more certain and by the way their children’s future is because as we all know we’re facing this debt crisis. Sometime, somewhere, somehow someone’s going to have to pay off these debts, and it’s going to be our children. And we have to, it’s getting to be a desperate situation. We will be looking at a Greece-like situation or a Spain situation if we don’t address these issues very quickly.”

Anchor David Nelson: “Do you believe that employer-provided health insurance should be required to cover birth control?”

Heh.

unclesmrgol on September 9, 2012 at 5:27 PM

For Donkeys, their wives can babble about policy all day long. The few minutes I caught of Moochelle’s speech last week were all about Lilly Leadbetter laws and other policies that she loves. I find it incredibly off-putting as nobody is authorizing the candidate’s spouse to involve themselves in the government. It takes me back to the nauseating “2 for 1″ Clinton campaign. Keep your politics to yourself.

Republican wives always seem to have much more sense and self-restraint. They make take up a pet cause, but not by pushing for laws. Instead they will typically advocate and support volunteer efforts and the like and not run around like unelected legislators.

I found this interview online:

Right Wing Reporter: Michelle, if Sasha became pregnant with your grandson, and her boyfriend wanted her to get an abortion, and she agreed, would you allow your grandson to be murdered?

Michelle: That would be Sasha’s choice, made in a loving environment free from any moral coercion from either Barack or myself. It would be totally her choice. So yes, if she wanted it, I would have to allow my grandson to be killed. These are the choices we make when we allow Choice.

Right Wing Reporter: You are aware that 30% of all black babies are murdered this way every year.

Michelle: You are a racist for even thinking that I care about the heritage of these children. It doesn’t matter — if their mother can make the choice, we must all rejoice!

Right Wing Reporter: Now, do you believe that what happens in the bedroom is a private thing?

Michelle: Are you hitting on me again? Of course I do.

Right Wing Reporter: So, why should employers pay for what goes on in the bedroom?

Michelle: Reproductive rights are our greatest freedom, and woman should not be constrained by the physics of their bodies. The Government must help them, and the only way the Government can help them is by forcing employers to provide the necessary sex equipment for their employees to use in their bedrooms.

Right Wing Reporter: Like sex dolls and such?

Michelle: Not only are you a racist, you are a pervert too! [reaches across the table and slaps his hand] And get that hand away from me!
