Gold: “The Daily Show” on Democratic “tolerance”

posted at 4:01 pm on September 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

So oblivious are the subjects here to the joke that it’s hard to believe they’re not in on it, although admittedly TDS has always had a knack for finding people like that. (Or for editing them to seem that way?) I’m happy to grant Stewart et al. the benefit of the doubt and assume that this was meant as a straight-up rally-for-sanity knock on the left’s definition of “openmindedness,” but watching it made me think of Joe Klein’s piece in Time last weekend urging the Democrats to stop playing identity politics. For a very good strategic reason:

The Democratic National Committee officially recognizes 14 caucuses or “communities,” most having to do with race, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity.

Many of these groups had a purpose in the beginning. African Americans had the ultimate historic complaint. The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender caucus (LGBT, if you’re scoring at home) worked effectively and won the Democrats’ support for a full roster of human rights, including marriage. The women’s caucus represented perhaps the most successful civil rights movement of our lifetime. Women are moving beyond equality now toward dominance as more of them graduate from college than men–and fewer of them drop out of high school–and take their places atop major companies, government agencies and, someday soon, the presidency.

But if I’m a plain old white insurance salesman, I look at the Democratic Party and say, What’s in it for me? These feelings are clearly intensifying in this presidential campaign. They are bound to increase, perhaps dangerously, as the white electoral majority (currently about 70%) diminishes over time. If the Democratic Party truly wants to be a party of inclusion, it must reach out to those who are currently excluded from its identity politics.

Basic math: If Democrats continue to win Latinos and women decisively then the only thing theoretically stopping them from dominating national elections over the near term is white independent voters. That was the whole point of having Bubba on last night in primetime, as Jay Cost astutely noted yesterday afternoon. Klein figures that if the Democrats ease off identity politics and stop sneering at gun-toting “rednecks,” as the tolerance brigade in the clip below does, they won’t lose much by way of minority support while putting important white working-class votes in play. The strategy is simple enough; I’m just not sure Democrats can bear to try it. Take Fluke, for instance: She snagged a primetime speaking slot last night not for anything she’s accomplished but because she was insulted by Rush Limbaugh in a way that could be exploited by Democrats in pandering to women. She’s an avatar of identity-based victimization and yet the party’s brain trust simply loves her, to the point where The One himself felt compelled to phone her after Rush’s insult. Clientelism is encoded in the party’s DNA by now; if Klein wants to convince Democratic leaders to reach out to white independents, he’s more likely to get through to them by framing his pitch in clientele terms (“what can we offer them?”) than in asking them to drop the clientele approach across the board.

Anyway, fun clip, especially in light of the latest Nazi reference at the convention. I’ll leave you with this graph via Dan Amira of New York magazine, who interviewed 50 convention attendees at random. See if you can figure out a connection between the TDS segment and these results:

“We are the ‘party of inclusion’…here, everyone is free…to think just like us!”

Only they understand science. Only they dress or groom correctly. Only they have broad horizons…and don’t generalize, stereotype or condemn prima facie. Only they actually think.

The Democratic Party: the party of selective truths.

The Democratic Party: the party of Orwell.

If you’d’ve substituted “n*gger” for “redneck”, the Democratic Party of 2012 would’ve looked just like the Democratic Party of, say, 1960.

bayam on September 6, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Actually, they can’t build anything great without prior approval from the environmentalists:

US plans its first megadam in 40 years
A Windmill is something that any average American engineer could figure out. A windmill is not something great. A Dam on the other hand is an engineering marvel. We haven’t built a big one in 40 years. China just finished the Three Gorges Dam. There is no question that this dam could have never been built in the United States due to environmental concerns.

If there is a reason that our engineers can no longer do anything great, it is most likely because of our government restricting our ability to do so.

Look, I’m a white male from a major northeast urban center. Most HA commenters would probably mistake me for a dye-in-the-wool lib. But I am a gun owner, and I like to go to the range. What is wrong with that? I like putting shots on target. It’s a fun sport. Why does that make me evil? Seriously, what is wrong with these freaks? What are they going to stereotype next, darts? Video games? Looking at people the wrong way? These people are crazy.

…children, sent to learn math and science, to say nothing of history and the proper construction of their own native language, in caverns of correctness…to be taught by one the Democrats’ most reliable and safely loyal constituencies.

If our buildings and bridges, once built, begin to topple over, we might think to correct our engineers and construction folks. If folks begin to die like flies after physicians begin prescribing fashionable but ineffective nostrums, we might want to turn our attention to the medical profession….

…we might want to watch out for the output of professionals as consumers of their services….

…and if increasing numbers of kids can’t read, can’t write a coherent sentence, can’t do simple math, but instead know every poem Maya Angelou has written, or can sing the praises of Ramadan, maybe we should look under the hood in our school systems.

…I heard an excellent catch-phrase today…touching on this subject…in a report touching on why perfectly able folks don’t take the jobs on offer in a job-thrifty world…the phrase was “the trophy generation”….

…everybody gets a trophy…which can gather dust, along with them, in their parents basements.

Not exactly. The court held that a greenhouse gas could be regulated under the Clean Air Act IF it was determined to be a dangerous pollutant. So what did the EPA do? This all started from my incorrect post that was meant for another thread, but let me just answer this.
Courts have upheld the endangerment finding thus far. There will be no way a President can reverse it’s course. I don’t think that is a bad thing. We need to quit treating the symptom (Presidents making executive decisions) and treat the disease (Amend the Clean Air Act itself).

Sarjex on September 6, 2012 at 5:47 PM

True. And we each think if the other is elected President, then the country is going to hell. But my belief is rooted in fact — Obama presided over the debt going from $10.5 trillion to $16.5 trillion in 4 years. If we continue at that rate, in 4 years the debt will be $22.5 trillion, and we will crash. It’s math. Math is hard. But not as hard as we will crash in a 2nd Obama term.

I’d love to hear Obama explain how our debt caused our country to crash. He would just blame Bush, and not himself. But I’d still like to hear him say it. This is his baby. He owns it.

Basic math: If Democrats continue to win Latinos and women decisively then the only thing theoretically stopping them from dominating national elections over the near term is white independent voters.

This is tragically naive, an assumption that the objectives of a group will not change when they achieve majority status. Once hispanics reach a majority, perhaps in California first, they will no longer have any use for the white liberal elites who now rule over them.

Look how that went in gerrymandered democratic districts, -liberal white elites no matter how far left will very rarely be elected over a black.

Once hispanics can dominate, they either take over the democratic party and push out the whites AND the blacks AND the LGBT and all that, or form their own hispanic party. Why wouldn’t they?

I’ve noticed that the pro-Obama trolls on this site are sounding angrier and more scared lately. Could it be that they are realizing their convention has been a total flop? Also, I’m just a bad typist.

urban elitist on September 6, 2012 at 7:10 PM

That was no typo. You revealed your own ignorance while trying to call someone else uneducated. More than a little embarrassing for you.

We know that you and other Obama worshipers are worried about how the Obama campaign has been burning through cash like crazy, with little to show for it. Yep, despite the desperate onslaught from Obama’s allies, Romney’s STILL in the better position. They thought Romney would be knocked out by now, but it is Obama who remains on the defensive. That’s not good news for the Obama campaign. Now it is time for Team Romney to start spending that cash:

Senior Romney-Ryan campaign officials tell Fox News the campaign will launch an enormous media offensive on Friday, the day after President Obama accepts the Democratic Party’s nomination for a second term. The push will include ad buys in several states that will cost tens of millions of dollars…

Romney-Ryan officials did not repudiate such talk; indeed, one official, in speaking to Fox News, likened the offensive that will begin Thursday to the “daisy cutter” bombs used in the Iraq war.

On the contrary. First instinct in exchanges like that one is to take the most vicious shot. Not just with me, but generally.

In related news, Khrushchev announced that “we will bury you,” And the Phillies booked rooms for their World Series appearance.

Talk is cheap.

I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if it is.
She fits the profile in exact detail including being an agitator-activist which she does on this and probably other forums.

Wished the interviewers would have included “those folks from Boston– the original Tea Partyers” or “criminals that dominate Chicago’s streets” or “the hicks from Clinton’s Arkansas” — some “blue” state of the US that the interviewee was not from.

jake49 on September 7, 2012 at 7:26 AM

Since no Republican ever says, implies, or really even thinks about Barack Obama’s race as a criterion for how he’s performing the job of President, what we’re seeing in that pie chart is that 98% of Democrats refuse to take Republicans at their word, and are responding to them entirely on the basis of their own imaginations.

And they wonder why there’s a disconnect in the national dialogue.

When you are not responding to what your opponents actually say, no dialogue is possible. End of analysis.

philwynk on September 7, 2012 at 7:58 AM

It has been my personal experience that most Democrats I have met, who readily identify as such, are the following:
1. Unreasonably argumentative
2. offensive to you when they realize you are a conservative
3. offensive to you when they realize you believe in God
4. offensive to you when they realize you don’t believe abortion is a right or is OK
5. When compared to other groups of people I’ve met, are often, but not always, the dullest knife in the drawer
6. cannot argue logically
7. Are very creative when relaying information that is ‘truthful’
8. Call you names when you have bested them in an argument & stomp away
9. Assume we all listen to Rush Limbaugh on a regular basis
10. Assume that if you are conservative you own guns, are a redneck, and want to kill people needlessly
11. Are intolerant of every viewpoint except for their own

Now I have met some reasonable Democrats before. One is a teacher in one of the school’s I teach in. But as I have gotten to know this English/Drama teacher, and I really like her, I have also noticed she does not often think logically. She does, however, not bleieve in abortion. I think she’s more of a centrist Dem, as I believe the majority of them are.
It is the elitist rich plantation owner Dems & the slave Dems who give the party their stereotype.
These people are the cancerous evil of the current DNC.

It’s true that this country is falling behind in math and science and cannot build anything great without importing legions of foreign engineers.

bayam on September 6, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Right, in the 1970′s we had schools that could teach math & science, now we don’t.

I’m sure you’ll agree it’s all about money, right?

So let’s spend TWICE the inflation-adjusted per-student amounts we spent in 1970.

And don’t worry conservatives; that’s 20% LOWER than we’re spending now.

So we can cut spending and still spend double the 1970 numbers that gave us better results…

Oh wait, maybe money isn’t the problem. Well the only other change we made was putting school control at the Federal instead of State level since then… that couldn’t be the problem because the Government is amazing and successful at everything it has ever touched and should be given more power and control over everyone’s life.. right bayam?

I wonder how to fix this?

gekkobear on September 7, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Democrat Party = Label Machine

Sticks and stones may break your bones….. Classless, self serving, vacuous…. Tolerance…Inclusive…..NOT A CHANCE! Liar, liar pants on fire.

When the democrat party has run out of little boxes to put on the forms they require everyone fill out to categorize and sub-set groups of people into a this or a that… are we still people?

Someone’s grandma calling someone she doesn’t even know a TEA-BAGGER…… does she even know what that is and just how vile a comment it is? Does she care? I am in my early 50′s and I will have to work well beyond 75 after already working since I was 12…. I hope she enjoys her retirement… years stealing as much money as she can from my generation, my children’s generation and their children’s, children’s generations.

Cool. Stewart occasionally shines. I’ve always marveled at the type that says that we will not tolerate intolerance. I got a kick out of the guy saying that he’d never call a redneck a name. Great satire. Great stuff.
