Politico’s VandeHei: ‘Mainstream media tends to be quite smitten with the Obamas.’

posted at 1:36 am on September 5, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

Analyzing the first night of the Democratic National Convention on a C-SPAN panel early Wednesday morning, Politico‘s Jim VandeHei admitted some of the praise for Michelle Obama may not be based only on her speech’s merits:

“We just posted an item about the media’s reaction. Not a shocker here, Wolf Blitzer saying it was a grand slam; Chuck Todd saying that Michelle Obama owned this convention in a way no speaker owned the convention in Tampa, and David Gergen on CNN said if they have two more nights like this they could probably break this race open. The mainstream media tends to be quite smitten with the Obamas so I don’t know if we should over interpret it but there’s no doubt that’s sort of how all the taste makers in media as we talk what it does have a way shaping certainly the coverage in the morning. So I think you can anticipate that tomorrow is going to be quite glowing.”

Here’s the Politico piece Vandehei was referring to.

Many thanks to Townhall’s Greg Hengler for grabbing this video for me in the dead of the night.

In the minute after Michelle’s speech I caught Brian Williams speaking in the most reverent tones about her speech, and Cokie Roberts too. It’s no wonder — the Democratic Party speaks the MSM’s language. I’m glad there’s no liberal bias in the news.

Former Gov Ted Strickland (D-OH) gave the most shameful speech, full of lies, bashing Romney. I don’t know what his problem is, besides that he lost to Kasich in 2010.

AP Fact Check: Some Obama Programs Embellished by Democrats

Speakers at the Democratic National Convention portrayed President Barack Obama’s presidency in glowing terms Tuesday evening, but sometimes left out important details or embellished his record.

Others mischaracterized programs backed by Republican challenger Mitt Romney and GOP running mate Paul Ryan. Source

Flora Duh on September 5, 2012 at 8:30 AM

Media has everything riding on this convention. If they can’t, in Gergen’s phrase, “break this race open,” they’re done. They go down with the Won.

de rigueur on September 5, 2012 at 1:44 AM

Conventions do not break the race wide open and in fact do not have any impact on the race… Elections are determined by the reality on the ground and not by conventions… The reality on the ground that the majority of voters care about are the economy, jobs, debt/deficit, and Obama utterly failed record… All the other stuff such as conventions are just BS that the political junkies greatly exxagerate its importance…

mnjg on September 5, 2012 at 8:39 AM

Honestly, I watched it. Reaction? What a bunch of platitudes detached from reality.

Last I checked, her husband is President and we already have some pretty insightful information about how he performs the job and what his opinions are on certain matters.

The MSM simply continues to embarrass themselves and decrease their credibility.

I would ask the fawners- what was so breathtaking, new and a “grand-slam” about it?

Doughboy on September 5, 2012 at 8:48 AM

I read the transcript of Michelle Obama’s speech. Pretty funny stuff. Just your ordinary American working-class unbringing, eh? Forgot to mention a few facts — like how daddy was a ward boss for Mayor Daley, and how Michelle spent her high school years hanging out with Jesse Jackson’s kids, or how daddy’s political connections helped Michelle meet slumlord Valerie Jarrett, who (after Michelle bombed in her one and only job practicing law) found a series of 6-figure political patronage jobs for Michelle that took advantage of Michelle’s special “skills.”

When she was waxing on about how much she and Barry learned to value honesty and integrity and never to take shortcuts, she also omitted that little incident in which she and Barry allowed convicted felon/political fixer Tony Rezko to set them up in a Chicago mansion, and to purchase the empty building lot next door (at a price of over $600k), and then sell a small portion of the lot back to the Obamas at a bargain basement price (while at the same time rendering the rest of the lot too small to build on, and thereby destroying its value). Even Barry himself admitted it was a shady deal, but Michelle somehow forgot to mention it when she was talking about how honest and pure she and Barry are.

Chicago – IS OUT?? CHICAGO IS OUT????

ICanSeeNovFromMyHouse on September 5, 2012 at 9:04 AM

A very astute observation from Ann Althouse that the media (including Fox) completely missed:

Here’s what I’d like to say the morning after the First Lady’s speech. It was a typical First Lady speech, completely old fashioned, using the candidate’s wife in the old-fashioned way. She’s a wife and mother, and she tells you over and over how being a wife and mother is the most important thing. Children are the future. We live and sacrifice for them. And my husband knows that. Vote for the wonderful man that I’m vouching for.

Isn’t it ironic? The Obama campaign has relied on a theme called “the war on women,” within which the Republicans want to shove women back into the past and Democrats represent the future where women are the full equals of men. Yes, yes, yes, that’s all very nice, but the man has an election to win, and his woman must reenact — one more time — the role of the traditional, modest, little-lady, helpmeet housewife.

…owned this convention… ??

“Owned”? Really? Why doesn’t this count as “code”?

How much does it take to “own” an auditorium of servile sycophants? Judging from the text, no more than a little factitious hesitation and faux emotion.

For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Beckel must not realize two of the largest fanbases in all of professional sports will choose to watch a football game tonight instead of a bunch of politicians blather on and on and on. So really, the Democrats only have one night to shine and the keynote will be an incumbent who can’t really talk about what the voters want to hear most about because his record on said topic is an unmitigated disaster.

Actually I’m kind of sickened by some people on FOX trying oh so hard to seem fair by heaping praise on Michelle’s speech. Nobody wants to come off as racist.

Breitbart has already mentioned numerous lies and inaccuracies that her speech contained. I won’t hold my breath for the fact checkers of the msm though.

Dumpster diving for furniture my a$$. Listens to all ideas my a$$.

She gets credit for the delivery, and the fact that she looked attractive, but the content was full of lies. Pathetic.

jazzmo on September 5, 2012 at 10:29 AM

For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone would consider Michelle Obama to be attractive or find anything that she says to be credible. I don’t really think she herself is all that enamored of “Barack” ( whose name always sounds like she’s about to hurl a hairball when she says it). If there’s anything to their relationship it’s that she is a bossy, hard woman and she found a girly man that she can push around, well, that is, when Valerie Jarrett isn’t holding the whip.

natasha333 on September 5, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Why hasn’t someone in the Romney campaign already put out a cartoon showing Valerie Jarrett in a Dominatrix outfit (complete with whip) hovering behind the President’s chair in the Oval Office?

For instance, it doesn’t matter how well the first ladies speech goes, when she is not telling us something we didn’t know, introducing us, or talking about real policy, it’s fabulous theatre, but a wasted night.
