Oh my: Boos at convention as Dems reinstate language on God and Jerusalem in platform; Update: Obama pushed for language to be added; Update: Or did he? Update: Will MSNBC cover?

posted at 6:01 pm on September 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

The amazing conclusion to yesterday’s snafu involving the Democratic platform’s language on Israel. After an evening of bad press they decided to reinsert the language about Jerusalem being the capital of Israel, along with some language about God after people noticed that the phrase “God-given” in the 2008 platform had been dropped in the new one. Simple process, in theory: Have someone from the floor propose adding the new language, then let the delegates approve it via a voice vote. The result? A trainwreck so awful that even Paul Begala didn’t try to spin it.

As you’ll see, Villaraigosa’s astonishment that there are so many nays is palpable, and pure gold. Reporters were taken aback too:

As were some delegates:

To my ear it’s hard to tell which side had the better of it, but a few people on the scene said there was little doubt:

Mollie Hemingway’s right that the boos at the end are ambiguous. Some people might be booing the language added to the platform, others are likely booing the procedural sham by which Villaraigosa railroaded this through even though there obviously wasn’t two-thirds support for the amendment. (John Boehner and the RNC railroaded their own delegates just last week.) The takeaway, though, for attack-ad purposes isn’t the boos but the degree of opposition to adding the language in the first place. In a few years, they’ll quietly omit it without a second thought. Be who you are, guys.

Update: Let the damage control begin:

That’s the second time in 24 hours that Obama’s been forced to disclaim responsibility for some terribly counterproductive messaging at the convention. Weird how the rank-and-file have these crazy ideas that he in no way shares, isn’t it?

Update: Noah Pollak asks a good question:

July 2012:

Update: Via DrewM, I’m amazed to see that the left’s biggest site apparently is going all-in on the side of the nays. The banner headline at HuffPo tonight:

Update: Politico’s Dylan Byers is watching the cable nets for reaction. As of 7:05 ET:

In today’s edition of “choose your own adventure” news, the amount of times the word “Jerusalem” was mentioned on each channel between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. today:

Fox News: 33 times

CNN: 16 times

MSNBC: 0 times

Update: Byers updates to say that MSNBC finally got around to mentioning the Jerusalem language in the Democrats’ platform in the 7 p.m. hour tonight.

Well it’s a Catch 22. Garden variety Liberals are a watered down version of Leftists. Whatever Leftists fervently believe in, Liberals believe in a slightly less severe version of the same thing. This applies to pretty much every issue under the sun. Support for Israel is the only issue where there’s a huge gulf between what the Leftists believe and what Democrat politicians preach. Democrat politicians go through the motions of being pro-Israel in a shameless attempt to hold onto the Jewish vote. And Jewish voters want to remain loyal to the Democrats, for a variety of reasons.

Many Jews would still vote for the Democrats no matter how anti-Israel the party becomes. But a lot of other Jews would defect to the GOP. If the Democrats can’t get at least 65% of the Jewish vote, that would be a big blow to them.

So the anti-Israel Leftists can pick their poison. Either the Democrats keep going through the motions of being pro-Israel, or a sizable number of Jews will defect, and the Democrats will never win another national election.

Oh I see the Paulbots are excusing the despot of his power grab that stole the voices of We The People… Ron Paul didn’t get the votes, he didn’t earn the delegates.

If you think it is okay to steal the votes of real Americans, you are not a Republican…you are American in name only. For all your pretended love of the Constitution you have no problem stripping other Americans of their most basic right to vote and have that vote matter.

So vote Obama or Gary Johnson or which ever destroyed of America you choose. Or stay home…whatever you are going to do, do it. At this point you have proven your distain for honest government and the voice of the people, and the right to self-determination that our founders provided for us.

It is a liberty given us by our Creator to vote for our leaders… and you took it away. You are despots.

What Ron Paul did was un-American. The GOP leadership were heroes for protecting the votes of millions of voters next time. Those rules cannot work when a despot insists on enforcing his will against the voice of We The People. We, the ones who voted… and accepted both losses and wins are the “grass-roots” of this party. I’m confused. All during the Women’s movement, I was told that women want to be seen for their brains and not their bodies. Now they want us to see their bodies. Not only see them, they want us to pay for the destruction of babies conceived within them. Not at all.

If we turn around and elect Conservatives then even more in 2014 we will easily have the power to Stop Obama. We can refuse to increase the debt ceiling without real cuts.

No forget that. I will tell you the truth. We are just like in 1774. We have one and only one chance to be saved. GOD. GOD fought our wars then and obtained our freedom from Great Britain. He established this country. But Romney is not our Savior he is Obama’s servant or Obama’s his but they are on the same page both pure EVIL. We know far more about Obama than Romney. What we do know is their records and a bit of their history both are nearly the same with respect to politics. Romney ran to the left of Kennedy then to the left for Governor while denying he was a Republican in both races. Romney’s record as Governor was almost the same as Obama’s as President. Both did or wanted Cap and Trade. Both did Health Reform. Both did Government paid Abortion. Both obtained or fought for Gay Marriage. Mitt was first he probably is the Master of EVIL.

I firmly believe that GOD will intervene if we pray to him and seek Conservative Leaders. But I also believe he will let us suffer if we elect Romney. We should know better.

Late to the party here. So, in summary, it looks like this:

–two hour Muslim prayer to open proceedings
–DNC Israel platform omits Jerusalem as capitol, tacitly endorses right of return, leaves out line from 2008 which states that peace should not include a return to 1949 borders.
–Delegates pretty overwhelmingly reject late inclusion of God and Jerusalem as Israeli capitol, the amendment being saved only by the “selective” hearing of the chairman after three (three!) voice votes.

How much more evidence is needed? A sane person, much less a sane Jew, could not vote this party back into power. I am a Jew who is ashamed for so many of my Jewish brethren.

No one left to lock out. The inmates are in control of the keys now. Very sad.

I think we may have just witnessed this election being handed to the Republicans —not just the Presidency, the whole thing. This was a political disaster for the Democrats of the first magnitude.

This is how stupid Tony Villar is… he should have just said it passed after the first vote and quickly moved on but he is so narcissitic that he thought he could cow those ruffians into saying aye…3 times made it pretty obvious that it was at best equally split but defiately not 2/3rds… Villar… what a joke…

Why do Muslims, who are staunchly conservative socially, vehemently pro-life and viciously anti-gay vote for Democrats?

Both are totally Godless.

Thanks for asking. Do you have any more serious queries?

This was bad! And for them to do the vote THREE times (See Mark 14:30; Matthew 26:34)bad optics all the way around!

Which word better describes this situation?: “fiasco”? “Fubar”? “Disaster?” “Snafu”? “Oiho”?

“Par”?

So, what sort of conversation is taking place in the Israeli embassy in DC tonight, after DWS’s lie yesterday, the booing of God and recognition of Jerusalem today, and the report earlier this week that Obama would not support an Israeli strike in Iran if the fanatics promised to leave us alone the Persian Gulf?

I can’t guess at the entire discussion, but somewhere in there somebody has certainly asked “what’s Mr. Romney’s phone number?”

BobMbx on September 5, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Mollie Hemingway’s right that the boos at the end are ambiguous

I was saying boo-urns.

RINO in Name Only on September 5, 2012 at 11:11 PM

God and Jerusalem were selected, not elected!

VorDaj on September 5, 2012 at 11:23 PM

I have absolutely no doubt that Obama intervened personally to put “God” and “Jerusalem” back into the DNC party platform. And I’m just as certain that it was his personal decision to leave them out in the first place.

The embarrassment of this action is that, while blink is correct, a president isn’t required to affirm that the US recognizes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, to do otherwise is a reflection in a change in US policy.

This is not a “sundown” law that just retires, it requires responsive action, and can’t be explained any other way other than this is how the Democrats want it.

Their further reaction to put it back is even worse, it shows chaos within what should be a unified party.

God,
you tricky son-of-a-gun, your ways are mysterious.

Thank you Lord. You made my night.

Amen.

Dollars to donut says you are right. Øbama either instigated or approved the removal, and then when he saw the mushrooming blowback, he had the language restored.
