Democrats getting antsy about Romney’s fundraising tally?

posted at 7:01 pm on September 5, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

The official total isn’t ready yet and we still don’t have an estimate available from Team Obama, but it looks like Team Romney is on track to continue the trend of fundraising domination of the past few months. Via the WSJ:

Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign is expected to have raised more than $100 million last month, according to two people familiar with the matter, marking the third straight month the Republican’s money effort has crossed the nine-figure threshold.

The final number will be announced next week, but the total shows that Mr. Romney’s fundraising network – so far relying heavily on large donors from the financial sector – has not tired as the general election approaches.

President Barack Obama’s re-election bid has not yet announced its fundraising total for August. Still, Mr. Romney and the Republican National Committee have outraised Mr. Obama for the three months prior. Mr. Obama’s monthly fundraising record this election is $75 million.

(Before anyone gets all holier-than-thou, by the way, President Obama knows all about large donations from the financial sector — don’t get me started). Given all the time President Obama spends campaigning and fundraising these days (so, actually, nothing too remarkably different from how he’s spent his time during most of his presidency), and given that we’re heading into the last couple months of campaign season and the time to pull out all of the financial stops is nigh, the Democrats may be about ready to enter into panic mode. Fox’s Ed Henry reports:

Senior Democratic sources say that in closed-door meetings with campaign donors here at the convention, top Obama campaign officials like campaign manager Jim Messina are expressing increasing alarm over the fact that Republican Mitt Romney raised $100 million in the month of August alone, further expanding his cash edge.

The Democratic sources tell Fox News the Obama team is privately saying they believe the final days of the presidential race are now shaping up as a dramatic battle between money and demographics, with President Obama’s advisers fearful that Romney will use his war chest to unleash a bombardment of television ads and ground game to turn out more white, working-class voters.

Nevertheless, the Obama team is saying in these private meetings they are still confident that they can win by exploiting their demographic edge with Hispanic, African-American and female voters, among others. …

Hmmm. What with the low show-up-at-the-polls level of enthusiasm for President Obama among Hispanic voters and the early suggestions that a growing number of women might be just about fed up with this “war on women” nonsense, I’d probably be getting pretty worried right about now, too.

Also TOMORROW:
I’ll throw in about $50 for the Republican Senatorial Committee for $50 total.

Pitch in $50 to the RNC for an RNC Total of $100.

Grand Total after tomorrow will be: $325 (more than I gave in 2010).

There was a PPP poll done two days ago (released today I think) for Michigan and while they show Obama winning, it shows a 25 point swing toward Romney with women. 25!!! They have men voting mostly for Obama which I don’t get considering all the other polls out there and Independents breaking for Obama which is also weird. But that PPP is showing women not just abandoning Obama by 10 points, but going for Romney by 10 is quite a drastic move. That should be a 12.5% point advantage to Romney overall, yet it’s still Obama leading?

For all those wondering about Romney spending money, I’m here in southern Ohio and can tell you the pro-Romney (anti-Obama) ads outnumber Obama ads by at least 2 to 1. Romneys ads are much better as well. Don’t really think this will be close.

Ta111 on September 5, 2012 at 8:42 PM

Here’s a pretty fair Washington Post tracking site for tv ad spending. (Make sure you click on “Romney” in the “By Candidate” window.)

Romney spent less than half a million on tv ads (71% negative) during the first week of August. During the last week of August (last week), he spend $5.2 million. He’s getting there.

So far this year, Obama has spent $127.4 million on tv ads, mostly negative, for statistical parity in the polls. Romney has spent about $70 million. That is all about to change.

Site also has a good map of heavy spending areas. Funny, not a dime spent in California…

Maybe Romney is waiting for Obama or some other Dem to say something embarrassing (such as the “You didn’t build that”) then play it back with a stinging rebuttal.

But once the DNC is over, there should be a 12-state ad blitz: FL, NC, VA, OH, WI, CO, IA, NV, MI, PA, and NH. Different ads targeted to different states, and get the message out there–including Ryan’s message. Romney has surged 4.5 points in the RCP average since picking Ryan, and Ryan stays on-message.

Patience is a not only a virtue, it’s a management thing.
The Amercan electorate, astute as they may be portrayed, have the attention span of a nine yr old and a short term memory worse than Biden.

Blowing the wad now would be too early and give the SCUM Media too much time to help Ocommie recover from it. I want to see that condescending pinhead Mika’s head spin around.

Wait till after their lame October surprise…….THEN bombs away.

I don’t think, in all of American history, an incumbent has been rebuked and replaced when running for another term. To do so would be an admission of failure and maybe political death of the Party.

They’re stuck with Obama.

I believe you’re right. Still, in this case, it might have been a good tactic since Romney seems to be struggling even against such a failure.

Let’s not second guess everything. Trust the stellar businessman (from Clint Eastwood’s speech( to know when to release the kraken. Mitt wants to win and he is not going to roll over to an a$$hole like Obama. Keep the faith; we are hopefully meant to win. Lets hope a forgiving God gives us one last chance to save this wonderful amazing ship of state.

AReadyRepub on September 6, 2012 at 1:35 AM

P.S. Mitt is not struggling against a failure; he is struggling against an entitlement society and the moron vote. Millions large!

AReadyRepub on September 6, 2012 at 1:37 AM

The Democratic sources tell Fox News the Obama team is privately saying they believe the final days of the presidential race are now shaping up as a dramatic battle between money and demographics, with President Obama’s advisers fearful that Romney will use his war chest to unleash a bombardment of television ads and ground game to turn out more white, working-class voters.

This ain’t no fair !

Anyone that thinks that Obama has a limit on spending for his campaign is a fool. He’ll spend more than Romney irregardless of how much money is raised by either side. Yes, that means he will stong-arm a bank or two to loan him the money if needed.

And if you think the media is going to hold TV spots for Romney to use in the latter weeks before before the election, you are also a fool. They will hold them for Obama on the promise of being paid, irregardless of cash-in-advance.

In summary, there will be no cash advantage and there will not be an advertising advantage. Plain and simple.

I want to start seeing some of that money getting spent! Like a 50 state ad buy of Villagrosa standing at the podium looking like a putz, unbelieving that his fellow Libs are booing God!

And then a headshot and quote from Reagan saying he didn’t leave the Democrat party… The Democrat Party left him!
