Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on September 4, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

One of the reasons Barack Obama didn’t make it earlier to Louisiana was his speech to soldiers at Fort Bliss to make the second anniversary of the end of combat operations in Iraq.  He might have gotten more cheers in the evacuated areas of Hurricane Isaac’s landfall.  According to the Daily Caller, Obama met with such a stony reception that he tried to cajole a reaction out of the audience:

His praise for the soldiers — and for his own national-security policies — won cheers from only a small proportion of the soldiers and families in the cavernous aircraft-hanger.

The audience remains quiet even when the commander-in-chief thanked the soldiers’ families, and cited the 198 deaths of their comrades in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The audience’s reaction was so flat that the president tried twice to elicit a reaction from the crowd.

“Hey, I hear you,” he said amid silence.

The selected soldiers who were arrayed behind the president sat quietly throughout the speech.

That, says Damian at e-Nough, is the real OOTD:

So when Mr. Obama brags on himself, silence. When he promises something, a smattering of applause. When he recognizes the military, cheers. Now why is that? [We consider why that is.] Perhaps it’s because they sense the depth of his sincerity (and this). Perhaps it’s because they have experienced his support first-hand (and this and this). Then again, perhaps they’ve been fooled once too often.

In an e-mail to me, Damian adds:

But of course Mr. Obama is not hearing them. Not at the podium and not in his policies. It is an unintended irony. That is the Obamateurism. That and Mr. Obama’s rhetorical lameness laid bare. And there is also the delicious synchronicity of Mr. Obama going flat at a military base named Bliss.
Mr. Obama now needs an applause light to cue his audiences when to clap, when to laugh.

How bad was the speech and its reception?

CNN and MSNBC ended their coverage of the speech before it was half-over.

Maybe Obama would have been better off speaking to, er, empty chairs.

It’s time once again to show our support for Day By Day and its artist-publisher, Chris Muir.  Chris holds an annual fundraiser to keep the adventures of Sam, Zed, Jan, and Damon coming.  Chris, whose artwork has enhanced the OOTD feature since its inception for Hot Air readers, uses the funds raised for only the continuance of DBD.  As always, the fundraiser has many fabulous gifts available at whatever level one chooses to donate.  If you’re thinking about donating at the Jan/Damon level or above, you’ll get a Last Supper Red vs Blue magnet, which has depictions of personalities from New Media — myself included.  Donating at the Anatoly Level will get you a 9×15 print of the artwork.  Dig deep and be part of supporting the one of the best New Media cartoonists in the biz!

And if you want something really cool …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

it is important to note that most soldiers were off on Friday. Many holidays, such as Labor Day, are turned into 4 day weekends with the soldiers getting both Friday and Monday off. Those soldiers were none too happy with having to get into uniform and go wither a speech from Mr. Obama.

tommyboy on September 4, 2012 at 8:12 AM

Obama met with such a stony reception that he tried to cajole a reaction out of the audience:

Yeah, never a good sign.

And why should he expect the troops to give him the gushing reception he’ll get later this week in Charlotte? The rat-eared bastard has clearly no interest in them as anything but props. His administration gutted the military both culturally and financially. He threw them into a “surge” action with no particular plan other than proppping up his sagging poll numbers. The man may be the Commander-in-Chief but he does not have anything other than the respect and loyality the military gives that office and that isn’t a good place to be when you line a bunch of soldiers up as props and expect them to respond on cue like trained seals (which is about what Obama thinks they are).

There is talk this morning of changing the venue to the (very small) arena where they are holding the rest of abortionpalooza. They say it is because of the uncertainty of the weather but we all know it is because of the utter lack of enthusiasm.

Case-in-point. Even the Paulbot delegates were not out there saying they hadn’t made up their mind about whether or not to vote for Mitt Romney. This morning’s coverage of abortionpalooza has two such quotes along with one delegate talking about how disappointed that more didn’t happen during the last four years.

Happy Nomad on September 4, 2012 at 8:17 AM

CNN and MSNBC ended their coverage of the speech before it was half-over.

Can’t risk having the plebes see anything that contradicts the MSM’s narrative of Bammy as universally loved and admired.

Gonna be a tough slog to get this talentless little weasel re-elected, eh MSM? But you’ll still do whatever it takes.

AZCoyote on September 4, 2012 at 8:18 AM

That’s a clown chair, bro.

faraway on September 4, 2012 at 8:19 AM

First of all they weren’t too appreciative of having their very rare 4 day weekend disrupted, second they know what he’s tried to do with respect to their medical insurance, third they have a good idea what the coming sequester will do the military in general and that’s just a start. So yeah, he probably didn’t deserve much applause.

If the man needs illustrated direction on how to do so, I’m sure there would be no small number of individuals willing to help him out.

OT but I see on Drudge that organized labor is trying to put a soft face on their reality. They’ve got “hug a thug” booths set up.

Happy Nomad on September 4, 2012 at 8:20 AM

FTA:

The president’s speech to the soldiers is part of his constitutional duties as commander-in-chief.

Ummm. No, it isn’t, really. It might be considered a normal thing for a commander-in-chief, but it isn’t a “constitutional duty”.

If you look at the pic in the article, you might know another reason they weren’t enthusiastic: a bunch of them are out in the bright sun, while Obama’s inside the hangar. On top of the acoustics of that arrangement probably being very bad, it tends to make you less inclined to applause when you have to stand/sit in the hot sun to listen to a guy who’s speechifying ~inside~.

I can envision what was going on in the CNN and MSNBC control booths. They realized he was bombing and executed emergency extraction procedures. I wonder if they have such a plan for his acceptance speech on Thursday.

And BTW, the snarky “you didn’t build it” riff Obama gave at Roanoke continues to pay dividends. After weeks of ignoring the issue as Obama being taken out of context, they have decided to build it into the convention’s theme. Too little too late IMO. The damage has already been done.

Someone needs to take one of the Enlightened One’s speeches (preferably the one where he states that the ‘economy is doing just fine’) and add a sitcom laughtrack. And a pan-around to an empty studio. They can probably wait until the DNC convention is over if they need some fresh shots of empty seats.

Why should the military carry ANY respect for this clown? Everyday I see new organizations popping up that will provide funds and support for injured military and their families. In my opinion, this is something that should be done with pride from our own government. Instead they keep cutting programs and denying benefits. I guess cousin Pookie and his friends need more food stamps and better cell phones. Oh- and illegals need college. This President is a first class loser.

O/T but another example of Obysmal’s self-absorption, this one in Louisiana:
http://www.businessinsider.com/obama-disses-george-w-bush-hurricane-katrina-isaac-2012-9

Did O not ignore Gov. Jindal’s requests for federal support prior to Isaac’s devastation? Did Pres. W not urge evacuations and offer federal support before Katrina’s landfall? Was Katrina a Cat 4-5 hurricane as opposed to Isaac’s Cat 1? Does O make every weather event an opportunity for political grandstanding?

The military knows that when they are cut and have to return to civilian life, there are no jobs awaiting them. They know that Obozo will not lift a finger to help them with the promised police jobs. They know that his policies have helped the Taliban infiltrate the Afghan forces and get their fellow soldiers killed. That’s what they know about their cinc which is why the applause is so sparse.
