Hmmm: New Democratic platform drops some pro-Israel language

posted at 4:04 pm on September 4, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Washington Free Beacon and Jeff Dunetz, who zeroes in on four key phrases that didn’t make the cut this time. Compare for yourself, though: The Israel section starts on page 38 of the 2008 platform and page 63 of the 2012 platform. Key bit from the ’08 document:

It is in the best interests of all parties, including the United States, that we take an active role to help secure a lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a democratic, viable Palestinian state dedicated to living in peace and security side by side with the Jewish State of Israel. To do so, we must help Israel identify and strengthen those partners who are truly committed to peace, while isolating those who seek conflict and instability, and stand with Israel against those who seek its destruction. The United States and its Quartet partners should continue to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements. Sustained American leadership for peace and security will requirepatient efforts and the personal commitment of the President of the United States. The creation of a Palestinian state through final status negotiations, together with an international compensation mechanism, should resolve the issue of Palestinian refugees by allowing them to settle there, rather than in Israel. All understand that it is unrealistic to expect the outcome of final status negotiations to be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949. Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.

And the key bit from the new one:

It is precisely because of this commitment that President Obama and the Democratic Party seek peace between Israelis and Palestinians. A just and lasting Israeli-Palestinian accord, producing two states for two peoples, would contribute to regional stability and help sustain Israel’s identity as a Jewish and democratic state. At the same time, the President has made clear that there will be no lasting peace unless Israel’s security concerns are met. President Obama will continue to press Arab states to reach out to Israel. We will continue to support Israel’s peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, which have been pillars of peace and stability in the region for many years. And even as the President and the Democratic Party continue to encourage all parties to be resolute in the pursuit of peace, we will insist that any Palestinian partner must recognize Israel’s right to exist, reject violence, and adhere to existing agreements.

To be clear, both platforms preface the above sections with passages stressing America’s commitment to Israel’s security, with the new one declaring, “A strong and secure Israel is vital to the United States not simply because we share strategic interests, but also because we share common values.” What’s different is that there’s nothing in the new one about isolating Hamas, nothing about the status of Jerusalem (as Dunetz notes, Jay Carney has been squirrelly about this at briefings too), nothing about the Palestinians settling in their new state instead of in Israel, i.e. the right of return, and nothing about the 1949 lines. How come?

Three possibilities, none of which are mutually exclusive. One: President Obama is more reluctant than Candidate Obama to draw lines in the sand since he’s actually in charge of U.S. foreign policy now. Why tie his own hands with needless pledges, especially in light of the fluidity of regional politics after the Arab Spring? The Hamas omission in particular, I think, is his way of recognizing that he might have to talk to those degenerates if Hamas’s new buddies in Cairo insist on it as a condition to keeping a cold peace with Israel.

Two: Obama and his brain trust decided months ago that they were going to try to win this election by turning out their base, not by winning over centrists, many of whom are a lost cause after three grueling years of Hopenchange. In that vein, O might be calculating that he can retain Jewish support with a strong but vague commitment to Israel’s security while pleasing his base by dropping some of the rhetoric that the pro-Palestinian side most dislikes. There are other tweaks to the platform that seem to reflect this, from broad strokes like basing the party’s entire deficit-reduction strategy on tax hikes to small but telling stylistic flourishes like this. The One is no more bound by his party’s platform than Romney is by his (which is why the left’s heavy breathing over the no-exceptions abortion passage in the GOP platform was so silly), so why not use it to throw some candy at the voters he most needs in November?

Three: Could be that Obama’s using the Israel section of the platform to signal his displeasure with Netanyahu for the saber-rattling lately over Iran’s nuclear program. Relations between the two governments have turned increasingly sour — read Sunday night’s Quotes of the Day for a taste — and O surely knows that while maybe one in 10,000 rank-and-file Democrats will pay any attention to the platform, Bibi’s office surely will. I can’t quite believe O would be that petty, though, especially since any perception of softening on Israel’s security could cost him dearly with pro-Israel Democrats, but who knows? Supposedly, he thinks he’s in the driver’s seat on the election. Maybe he’s confident enough to send a little message to Netanyahu this week. Exit quotation from Alan Dershowitz, who says he’s planning to call his contacts in the White House immediately: “I think one shouldn’t give too much weight to platform pronouncements, but in this case, I think the omissions are troubling — particularly the omission about the Palestinian refugee issue and Hamas are, I think, deeply troubling.”

A man can be Jew or Christian, or he can be an Obama supporter, but he can’t legally be Jew or Christian, and be an Obama supporter … except in the usual way: one of the two with the mouth, the other with the heart. The spirit of Judaism and Christianity proclaim the survival of Israel and the meaning of that has no longer been left to guesswork, but made tremendously definite … the Jew and the Christian must fight all who would commit or enable another genocide or enslavement of the Jews or of Christians. That is the spirit and the law of Judaism and Christianity.

Well, Obama has his beliefs and actions and it is a perfectly definite set, there is no vagueness about it. He commands that the Jew and Christian bow to the Muslim at every turn they do him hurt or threaten him and his children with death. Word it as softly as you please, the spirit of Obama is the spirit of the evil shadowed specter of the Beast of Austria insidiously billowing in and building and building to ever more horrific heights. The moment there is a question about a boundary line or a building or some Muslim somewhere complaining about any matter, see Obama rise, and see him spit at the Jew and the Christian from the corner of his twisted mouth. The spirit of Obama being in its nature narcissistic and selfish — it is in the man’s line, it comes natural to him — he can fully live up to all of the teachings of Jeremiah Wright and even of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; for the spirit of Judaism and of Christianity are entirely impossible to him.

VorDaj on September 4, 2012 at 4:24 PM

You have made those statements I’ve highlighted several times. While that is an evangelical Christian viewpoint, it is not correct exegetical interpretation of scripture and is not orthodox Christian doctrine. The nation of Israel as God’s chosen people ceased when they rejected the New Covenant. Reading the statements of John the Baptist, Christ himself, and writings of Paul and the other apostles makes it abundantly clear that merely being Jewish did not place one within the kingdom of God. Thus, there is no scriptural mandate for a nation of Israel in these modern times.

That said however, the existence of Israel as a country for those of the Jewish faith and others is a good thing. It provides a sanctuary for those who were persecuted throughout the centuries, it is a thriving free and democratic society, and it serves as a shining example of what is possible in the Middle East compared to the backwards societies of their neighbors. They are an ally of the US and for us to throw them under the bus in preference for a bunch of 7′th century throwbacks is shameful.

Is Obama really that stupid? Most Palestinians and Muslims in general want only a totally destroyed Israel with as many dead Jews as possible. Palestinians even teach their little children to glory in Israeli killing suicide bombers. And I seriously doubt that Hamas would allow a democracy, which as any honest Koran reading Muslim will tell you, is totally contrary to Islam and its sharia.

They’ve dropped any mention of G-d too, so this does not surprise me. I won’t be watching the lib lovefest; there are more important things for me to do, like trim my toenails and look for dustbunnies.

Doesn’t Jarrett have an Iranian heritage?

Wow, I’m watching Durbin on Special Report and their strategy is obvious. He is arguing and very very defensive. And I find him offensive.

Agree. Durbin was angry and rude. Interesting that he immediately assumed conclusions that Brett had not drawn, no? Never actually answered the question on why, either.

If they didn’t want anyone to notice the changes, why make them?

Cindy Munford on September 4, 2012 at 6:18 PM

I wonder what kind of deal was made in Chicago-style smokey backrooms for this. I wonder what the quid pro quo is.

Maybe Barry is getting a few mil for his campaign fund under the table from the Saudis in exchange for this concession/appeasement.

Or maybe Barack Hussein is hoping the Muslim Brotherhood, Hamas, and the PLO extend him honorary memberships.

I’ll take option 1. Flexibility is always prudent in politics, and especially in foreign policy.

Taking out the specific references to Hamas was sensible.

The west’s stubbornly suicidal accommodation of Islam within western states will prove far more toxic to Israel, the west in general and the rest of the world than any party manifesto.

Exactly. These things were discussed/debated and then actively removed. I guess God doesn’t play well with lefties. But we’ll never know why since Durbin preferred acting like a total knob rather than answering the question.

My favorite bit was when Durbin said that nobody reads the platforms and Baier shot back that the Dems complained about the GOP platform in Tampa. Nice, though I would have sent Brett a check if he has replied with “You mean like that $2 trillion HC bill you voted for?” That would have been classic. Ah well.

Leaving God out. Leaving out the word “Creator” when quoting the Declaration.
Covering up the symbol of Jesus.
Just when I think the Dems can’t get more disgusting.

I’m thinking of a caller on C-Span after the RNC convention.
Sounded like an elderly woman.
She said Mitt did not mention God in his speech, that she could not vote for a Mormon because she was a Christian and the Mormon religion leaves out God.

I wonder what she is thinking now. The Dems entire platform leaves God out.

I was so furious watching that idiot Durbin refuse to answer why God was not on the platform I had to go outside for a walk.

He used one of BO’s tactics. Make the interviewer look stupid for asking the question rather than answer the question. Brett did a good job.

What I find interesting is the following change:

2008: It is in the best interests of all parties, including the United States, that we take an active role to help secure a lasting settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with a democratic, viable Palestinian state dedicated to living in peace and security side by side with the Jewish State of Israel.

2012: A just and lasting Israeli-Palestinian accord, producing two states for two peoples, would contribute to regional stability and help sustain Israel’s identity as a Jewish and democratic state.

In other words, it’s Israel’s democracy which is now supposedly shaky. There is no demand from the Palestinian state to be democratic.

Also, Israel’s character as a Jewish state is not absolute anymore. It’s dependent on there being peace.

Why should any country other than ours be in any party’s platform? Are you Americans or Israelis?

Is Israel safer than it was four years ago?

Punchenko on September 4, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Well played, my friend. Well played!

When it became clear that the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, had been intentionally misquoted by the Chairwoman of the party in power in Washington, D.C., in a thuggish attempt to use him to falsely smear her political opponents, you really have to wonder how many of the people of Israel would continue to view the current United States government’s commitment to their security.

That was an utterly inexcusable offense on her part, and a broad cross-section of people have to demand an unequivocal rebuke of her statement, one coming from the President himself.
