Debt clock hits $16 Trillion as DNC celebrates Hope and Chair 2012

posted at 6:31 pm on September 3, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

Well, the scene is already set for an uplifting week of healing rhetoric and outreach to independents.

Democrats are having plenty of high-profile problems dealing with the simple question: “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

Expectations are being managed.

What they thought was a rambling speech by a fading old-timer turned out to be the perfect metaphor for the president’s lack of leadership, perfectly suited to the age of memes.

There’s a blow-out end-of-summer sale at the Obama store.

The Raleigh News & Observer delivered less-than-welcome news to incoming DNC attendees today:

The debt clock will deliver a similarly unwelcome message when it clicks over to $16 trillion as the DNC kicks off Tuesday.

But, the man of the hour remains fully secure in his own awesomeness.

Will he be enough to overcome the perils before a Democratic National Convention and deliver an electrifying call to duty that can overcome 8 percent unemployment, in the Stadium Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken?

The theme of the convention is “building the economy from the middle out.” But Obama will be relying heavily on the Clinton legacy, not his own, to convince voters he’s the best path to the future. Let’s build a bridge to the 21st Century again! It’s shovel-ready!

There will be no dynamic bullpen of speakers on display, painting a picture of the future of the party.

There are three promising names on that list, three with a reputation for a combination of charm, skill, and centrism that endears them to independent voters— President Bill Clinton, Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, and the young Gov. Martin O’Malley of Maryland. All three have been rebuked for the sin of being far too reasonable in public for Team Obama to countenance.

But I’m sure this week there will be no need for hostage videos. Right?

I’m heading to Charlotte for the convention, along with Townhall.com’s Guy Benson and Katie Pavlich.

While you’re getting ready for the convention’s kick-off tomorrow— I hope you’ve been training your snark gradually because this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint— please read this great column from Ben Smith of Buzzfeed if you haven’t. I’m sure he’s gotten plenty of blowback on it, but he makes a convincing case that “the Democrats’ attack on Republican honesty is a campaign ploy, not an argument…one reporters should be wary of echoing.” It’s a great read.

The White house has officially denied having held secret talks with Iran over a possible attack by Israel.

White House spokesperson Jay Carney said the claim, made in an article published in the Hebrew-language newspaper Yediot Aharonot, was not true.

“The report is false and completely incorrect,” said Carney. “And we don’t talk about hypotheticals,” he added.

In the report, the newspaper had claimed the White House sent a secret message to Tehran through two unidentified European intermediaries, saying the U.S. would not get involved if Israel decided to attack Iran’s nuclear plants.

In return, the U.S. asked that Iran avoid attacking American installations in the Persian Gulf region in any retaliatory action it might take against Israel, the newspaper reported. No source for the information was disclosed.

Let’s hope this will also help Scott Brown winning re-election to enable GOP to control the senate.

Princess Sitting Bullshat channeled Hillary’s “I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas.” moment by saying at a campaign rally last Saturday: “you probably won’t see me folding laundry.”. It was a swipe at Scott Brown, who was shown in a TV ad featuring his wife and daughters and showing him doing chores like folding laundry.

And to double down on stupid, John Walsh, the Chairman of the MA Democratic Party said in a breakfast event this morning: “We’ve also experienced Scott Brown,” Walsh told the delegates. “We’ve got to say a few good things about him: He handsome, right? He’s still got the coat. He’s still got the truck. He’s a regular guy. I mean, he spent a couple million dollars folding towels on TV to prove he’s an honorary girl. We appreciate that.” He shatfacedly apologized after a few hours.

Scott Brown’s campaign did not let that slide and released this statement:“It seems Professor Warren and her spokesman can’t decide if they are just too good to fold laundry, or if household chores are suitable only for women. Professor Warren should apologize for her own elitist remark, and denounce her spokesman’s insulting comments suggesting folding laundry is a ‘girl’s’ job,” said Angela Davis, the chairwoman of the Brown for Women coalition.

Against individualism, the Obama conception is for the State; and it is for the individual only in so far as he coincides with the State. Obama conceives of the State as an absolute, in comparison with which all individuals or groups are relative, only to be conceived in their relation to the State. The Obama conception of the State is all-embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value.

Alinsky on the middle class

Alinsky stressed that organizers and their followers needed to take care, when first unveiling their particular crusade for “change,” not to alienate the middle class with any type of crude language, defiant demeanor, or menacing appearance that suggested radicalism or a disrespect for middle class mores and traditions.

For this very reason, he disliked the hippies and counterculture activists of the 1960s. “Alinsky scolded the Sixties Left for scaring off potential converts in Middle America. True revolutionaries do not flaunt their radicalism, Alinsky taught. They cut their hair, put on suits and infiltrate the system from within.”

While Alinsky’s ultimate goal was nothing less than the “radicalization of the middle class,” he stressed the importance of “learning to talk the language of those with whom one is trying to converse.”[63] “Tactics must begin with the experience of the middle class,” he said, “accepting their aversion to rudeness, vulgarity, and conflict. Start them easy, don’t scare them off.”[64]

To appeal to the middle class, Alinsky continued, “goals must be phrased in general terms like ‘Liberty, Equality, Fraternity’; ‘Of the Common Welfare’; ‘Pursuit of happiness’; or ‘Bread and Peace.’” He suggested, for instance, that an effective organizer “discovers what their [the middle class’] definition of the police is, and their language — [and] he discards the rhetoric that always says ‘pig’ [in reference to police]. Instead of hostile rejection he is seeking bridges of communication and unity over the gaps…. He will view with strategic sensitivity the nature of middle-class behavior with its hang-ups over rudeness or aggressive, insulting, profane actions. All this and more must be grasped and used to radicalize parts of the middle class.”

A related principle taught by Alinsky was that radical organizers must not only speak the language of the middle class, but that they also must dress their crusades in the vestments of morality. “Moral rationalization,” he said, “is indispensable to all kinds of action, whether to justify the selection or the use of ends or means.” “All great leaders,” he added, “invoked ‘moral principles’ to cover naked self-interest in the clothing of ‘freedom,’ ‘equality of mankind,’ ‘a law higher than man-made law,’ and so on.” In short: “All effective actions require the passport of morality.”

But Alinsky understood that there was a flip side to his strategy of speaking the palatable language of the middle class and the reassuring parlance of morality. Specifically, he said that organizers must be entirely unpredictable and unmistakably willing — for the sake of the moral principles in whose name they claim to act — to watch society descend into utter chaos and anarchy. He stated that they must be prepared, if necessary, to “go into a state of complete confusion and draw [their] opponent into the vortex of the same confusion.

When Obama took office, Democrats held:

• 56 Senate seats. It is 51 now (plus two independents who align mostly with the Democrats).

• 257 seats in the House of Representatives. It is 190 now (there are also three vacancies for seats last held by Democrats).

• 29 of the 50 governorships. It is 20 now.

• 4,073 state legislative seats. It is 3,319 now.

Do Democrats really want to argue that they are better off today than they were 4 years ago?

She’s just saying she’s rich and living the good life now. Get it? Republican = rich person.

steebo77 on September 3, 2012 at 7:28 PM

Is it a sign that I’m officially middle-aged when I understood about 1/4 of what she wrote.

Tell that to her African-American followers on Twitter calling her an “Uncle Tom, “Ugly Ho,” “Stupid Bitch,” etc.

He’s right, he totally botched the BP oil spill cleanup. And he’s 3 days after Romney getting to Louisana. He was too busy campaigning in O-I-H-O to come any sooner.

Take a look at the local weather forecast for the week !!

This should be fun.

“Training your snark”. MK, what a fabulous addition to Hot Air you are. :-)

Grace_is_sufficient on September 3, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Debt doesn’t matter to socialists. Notice Team Obama never brings it up. Obama only dismissively mentions it when Republicans try to talk about it.

farsighted on September 3, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Have you actually listened to the “endorsement?” It’s clearly meant derisively.

steebo77 on September 3, 2012 at 7:12 PM

Yeah. Like when someone raps about killin’ cops. They don’t mean that. Or they do. Whatever. It’s just a line. What could be more shocking than supporting Romney. It’s in there for the shock value. Like killin’ cops. Which, you know, happens. That’s part of life. But voting for Romney. That’s way out there.

i hadn’t even heard a teeny whisper, but i was told that paulie ryan spoke at TCU to an unenthusiastic crowd of a mere 4K, many likely paid to attend by the romney campaign.

Sarah at TCU in 2008? more than 8k. you betcha!

Gee, it’d be a real shame if a well-deserved lightning strike were to disrupt the DNC festivities.

Aren’t they going to feel stupid when they realize they made death threats over a joke that went over their heads.
