Video: Axelrod dodges the “better off four years ago” question; Update: Video fixed

posted at 11:01 am on September 2, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Want a preview of the presidential debates?  Then spend two and a half minutes with this clip from today’s Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace and David Axelrod.  Wallace asks Axelrod the quadrennial question: are voters better off now than four years ago?  When the man running Team Obama tries to run away from the question by talking about the tough environment Barack Obama inherited, Wallace lays out the comparison on economic statistics between January 2009 and today, and asks Axelrod again: are voters better off now than four years ago?   Answer: Er ….

Here are the stats Wallace uses:

  • Unemployment: 7.8% then, 8.3% now
  • Median income: $54,983 then, $50,964 now
  • Gas prices: $1.85 per gallon then, $3.78 now
  • National debt: $10.6 trillion then, $15.9 trillion now

Expect Mitt Romney to memorize these statistics, and perhaps toss in the civilian participation rate, which was at 65.7% in January 2009 and in June 2009 at the start of the “recovery,” but fell to a 30-year low of 63.6% in April and is at 63.7% now.  That’s actually the best measure of the Reagan Metric.  If this question doesn’t come from the moderators at the debates, you can bet your bottom dollar that Romney will ask it himself — and that Obama’s (non-)answer will be just as effective, and just as revealing, as Axelrod’s today.

I’m better off. I have moved to Dubai, and I am relatively immune to the financial fiasco in the US. I certainly don’t credit Obama with my personal circumstances. “Blame him” might be a better description.

Wallace’s question was racist wasn’t it? Unemployment, Median income, Gas prices and National debt are all dog whistles!

TarheelBen on September 2, 2012 at 11:14 AM

The Democrats this time around have no bench depth — starting right from the top. And it doesn’t help much that they are uniformly unattractive both in appearance and demeanor. If the vote were held on that basis alone, it wouldn’t even be a contest. Throw in the actual damage they’ve done, their tone deafness and rank ineptitude, you have to wonder how anyone could want anymore of that.

Axelrod dodges the “better off four years ago” question

Well, to be truthful, Axelrod is a lot better off today than four years ago, as is Biden, and Tiny Dancer Emmanuel, and Michelle, of course, and Pete Rouse, Valerie Jarrett, Dave Plouffe, Timmy Geithner, Eric Holder, to name but a few.

So, the question may have momentarily confused “Meathead” Axelrod.

The thing that is getting me the most from these spokestools today is their hammering of the point that Romney is not offering specifics. The brazenness of that is astounding. Obama successfully got to be all things to all people without much of a challenge and where exactly does he plan to take it with 4 more years? 4 percent more taxes from 2 percent of the population and staying the course on steering business towards dicey green initiatives? That’s the big idea? Oh yeah, tax breaks to businesses that ship job overseas…. that must poll test great. Does it not occur to people that jobs might ship overseas due to our tax code and regulatory environment?

David “Pornstache” Axelrod says: “It’s going to take some time to work through it.” Meaning the mess, we’re in, of course. Well, we’re not stupid, we know it’s going to take time, and we’ve been waiting nearly four years now for Obama to make the first meaningful effort. You can’t “work through it”, unless you start, and Obama hasn’t. The only thing he’s done is make pretty speeches, spend tax money like it grows on trees, and issue edicts that take our liberties away bit by bit.

Clint Eastwood is an absolute master of his trade and craft. His trade and craft, is to put ideas and thoughts into peoples heads in ways that they were not there before.

For the vast majority of his career Clint has avoided overt political messaging in the movies, preferring instead to deal in relevant social ideas.

From the Outlaw Jose Wales to Dirty Harry his message has traditionally been one of self reliance, justice (as opposed to fairness) and a respect for the law, while harshly criticizing corruption or abuse of the legal system for personal gain.

At the RNC Clint turned the full magnitude of everything he has spent nearly three quarters of a century learning and perfecting into a 6 and a half minuet soliloquy of pure evisceration against a man who stands for nearly the exact opposite of everything Clint believes in.

Clint Eastwood sliced and diced Barack Obama with a knife sharper than any surgeons scalpel, the cuts were so fast and well placed that even now neither Obama nor any of his minions realize how much damage Clint did to the empty chair fool.

SWalker on September 2, 2012 at 11:38 AM

Laugh if you will, but I think George Will is hitting on the right point today. He just talked about 4 percent tax for 2 percent of the population is their version of a big idea. banzaibob on September 2, 2012 at 11:50 AM

What’s insane about conservatives on this issue is that the “we” who is doing better are precisely those folks the conservatives claim must do better in order of the rest of us to achieve, big corporations. Corporate profits are up, Wall Street is up, worker productivity is sky high (perhaps at its highest levels). If we believe that corporations are citizens and that they represent the best interests of the nation, then yes “we” are better off than “we” were 4 years ago. But that’s the problem isn’t it. What’s best for the corporate sector isn’t always good for Americans. Many of those profits have come from laying people off, cutting wages, eliminating pensions and other cost-cutting measures that are the direct result of greed not anything the Obama Administration has done or not done. Unfortunately, because Obama is just as reliant upon large corporate donations as the GOP he can never talk about the growth in anti-employee initiatives within the private sector, thats the verboten topic in American politics.

My husband and I did ok over the last 3 1/2 years. However, compared to the previous years where we grew our income, now it’s just holding steady. We count our blessings.
What hurts is watching my sister-in-law and her husband struggling to keep their third generation family business alive. Their children are on their own with financing their college educations by working while in HS. I had to work through HS and it made me miss a lot of my youth.
And why, so that the government could force banks to loan money to undeserving people to buy a home they couldn’t afford. Not everyone deserves to own a home, it’s not a right. My grandparents never owned, always rented, they couldn’t afford to own. Guess what, they still raised a family and were happy.

If this question doesn’t come from the moderators at the debates…….

I can say with a high degree of certainty that the question will not be asked by the moderators. Mitt must bring it up himself.

Nice screed there! You sound so much for Obama to me like a serial rapist/killer who says all of his victims ‘wanted it’.

Romney needs to toss in the statistic on 40%+ drop in net worth of American families, due to dropping housing prices, etc.

-Mr. Axelrod, why aren’t you out on the stump touting Obamacare?

“Gee look at the time, I gotta go.”

I think the democrates have forgotten that if you spin too much and too fast, you get dizzy and fall down.
