Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on August 31, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama and Joe Biden have taken a lot of credit for the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.  Biden has used the “Osama bin Laden is dead and GM is alive” line as a campaign slogan on more than one occasion.  Sadly, some of the men from the same Navy SEALs unit that successfully conducted the OBL mission died three months later in Afghanistan when a missile hit a CH-47 Chinook ferrying them in Wardak province.  For their service and accomplishments — for which Obama has been happy to assume political credit — the President of the United States sent a letter of condolence to each family.

Did he offer any personal thoughts?  Not exactly, although it’s not quite as bad as Jim Hoft believes:

Yesterday, Karen and Billy Vaughn, parents of Aaron Carson Vaughn, spoke at the Defending the Defenders forum sponsored by the Tea Party Patriots outside the RNC Convention in Tampa. Karen brought a copy of the form letter they were sent following their son’s death.

It’s a form letter.

It was signed by an electric pen.

That’s not all.
Karen Vaughn reached out to the parents of the other SEALs killed in that crash.
Their letters were all the same.
Form letters – signed by an electric pen.

Are the letters signed by electric pen?  The White House denied it, and Jeryl Bier, one of our OOTD stalwarts, thinks not:

The bottom two examples are enough to show that the signatures on the letters are not identical.  Note the loop at the top of the “O” by the downstroke on the signature on the left; that loop is absent on the signature on the right.  The other signatures are difficult to make out due to the low resolution, but I believe it is possible to detect small variations there as well.

The other reason I question the electric pen claim is that there is a well-known specimen of the president’s electric pen signature.  In May 2011, the president was in France when an extension of the Patriot Act was passed by Congress.  As was widely reported at the time, and to some minor controversy, the legislation was signed into law by President Obama’s authorization of the use of an electric pen.  CBS News reported this at the time, and had obtained a copy of the legislation with the president’s electric pen signature … This signature is obviously different than the clearest specimen from the letters to the military families[.]

But a form letter it most certainly is, Jeryl says:

The remaining issue, of course, is the use of form letters.  Although not unprecedented, as noted by Jake Tapper,  President George W. Bush generally eschewed their use when writing to grieving families and choose to write personal notes to the families.  Given that President Obama’s letters are dated September 23, 2011, and he spent the following afternoon on the golf course with Bill Clinton and White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley, it would be difficult for the president to plead lack of time as an excuse for the fill-in-the-blank condolence letters.

Jim has pictures of the letters, along with this reminder of what it takes to get a personal note of condolence from the Commander in Chief:

But Obama did send a personal letter to rapper Heavy D’s family when he passed away.

Indeed he did, according to the AP:

“We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers,” the president wrote in a letter, which the Rev. Al Sharpton read at the service, The Associated Press reported.

Res ipsa loquitur.

It’s time once again to show our support for Day By Day and its artist-publisher, Chris Muir.  Chris holds an annual fundraiser to keep the adventures of Sam, Zed, Jan, and Damon coming.  Chris, whose artwork has enhanced the OOTD feature since its inception for Hot Air readers, uses the funds raised for only the continuance of DBD.  As always, the fundraiser has many fabulous gifts available at whatever level one chooses to donate.  If you’re thinking about donating at the Jan/Damon level or above, you’ll get a Last Supper Red vs Blue magnet, which has depictions of personalities from New Media — myself included.  Donating at the Anatoly Level will get you a 9×15 print of the artwork.  Dig deep and be part of supporting the one of the best New Media cartoonists in the biz!

And if you want something really cool …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Maybe those families should show up at the DNC next week and hold up those letters with a huge placard reading YOU SENT THIS! when Obama is giving his acceptance speech.

It is just another example of the total contempt he holds towards military personnel, even the fallen brave.

It may be too Rorschach, but the signature also looked like a carton of someone sticking out his arm with the middle finger extended.

Electrongod on August 31, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Well, look at it from the President’s point of view:

Navy condolence letters aren’t going to get much air play, so they are of no Media/Public Relations/Campaign value.

Heavy D on the other hand has a fan base that might be made a little more enthusiastic about voting and perhaps influencing others to vote.

Even Joe Biden could make this call as it’s a no-brainer.

But by all means…continue to discuss, tell me more about how the man who increased drone strikes in Pakistan and authorized the hit on Osama Bin Laden and who’s wife has dedicated her time in office to personally help veterans to get hired (I know, I was at one of those events) hates the military.

Well ok there’s the newly-released information that earlier strikes on OBL were denied by Bark, that Panetta basically had to authorize the hit because the POTUS couldn’t make himself do it, that the final authorization needed 16 hours of deliberation while Obie hit the links, that top secret information about the strike was deliberately leaked by the administration to make Obamao look good but resulted in the deaths of 30 service members.

Hate is far too strong a word for Obama’s attitude towards the military. It’s more a casual and puzzled indifference because they represent a way of life that is truly foreign to him. Hence the greatest orator the free world has ever known stumbling over words like corpsman and having a tough time remembering ranks and service branches. It’s all part of the original problem that he was in no way prepared for the magnitude of the job. His grasp exceeded his reach, but only because he was buoyed up by a corrupt and conniving media who put their own interests for a narrative above the the best interests of the country.

To want the job as CIC you should first understand the people you will be sending into harms way. I don’t think Obama has every really bothered to deal with the military as anything more than tools and photo-ops. That’s not hate, but it’s far short of what they deserve.

We’ve had a volunteer military since the 1970s. What’s so hard to understand about that douchebag?

The problem is that the rat-eared bastard only uses the military for photo-ops. He didn’t go to Dover that one time out of respect but because he was about to give a speech about Afghanistan at West Point and wanted the media to have the images pretending to care about a few dead soldiers. Obama sole concern for the troops extends to how much they can help his perpetual campaign or provide a good photo op (his words actually). He’s proven these numerous times.

Oh and let’s see how long the Mooch’s dedication to helping veterans get hired lasts….once she’s evicted from the WH in Jan 2013.

And funny, the media and liberals (but I repeat myself) were all wee-weed up about Bush and form letters. Now..crickets…

Yeah, Presidents are pretty busy guys who can’t handwrite letters for every death..however…these men who accomplished such an important mission…should have gotten the same consideration as Heavy D.

And the decision to ice Bin Laden did indeed take 16 hours to reach, and that is admitted by the same White House, the White House that somehow managed to leak uber-secret info on the hit soon after its completion.

16 hours to hand-wring about killing the most wanted man on Earth? Yessir, that’s a profile in courage.

And now…..they’ve been really been holding Obama’s feet to the fire with the nightly showings of our losses from Afghanistan.

Oh wait.

HumpBot Salvation on August 31, 2012 at 9:06 AM

StoneKrab on August 31, 2012 at 8:52 AM

How do I square that? Easy. I choose to believe that Romney and Ryan will have a degree of respect for our troops and our allies and use sound and consistent judgement in deploying them to defend American rights and interests. I also believe that they will not work against our own best interests by leaking details and time tables about troop movement and deployment that serves the enemies of America because they understand that it’s detrimental to our own efforts.

And with respect to Romney’s sons not serving, what does that have to do with anything? It’s a volunteer army last I checked.

Have you heard much from the anti-war movement during Obama’s term? Have they been decrying the use of drones (they way candidate Obama himself decried them btw)? I’m sure they’re still out there. Cindy Sheehan is still out there (literally) but the media is not giving her much attention during the last 4 years. Expect that to change when there’s a Republican in the White House again. Her or the next surrogate for absolute moral authority will be trotted out to complain about America’s military. It’s a regrettably predictable cycle.

Time for Barry to write another personal letter.

Well that’s that. I guess the Obama’s can’t do anything right in your eyes, your mind is made up. It’s good to know.

StoneKrab on August 31, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Thank you for confessing your lack of discernment.

But Obama did send a personal letter to rapper Heavy D’s family when he passed away.

So who makes these decisions about who is “worthy” enough to receive an exception to the form letter? The president himself? Jarrett? Whose priorities are that out of whack? Well…it’s nothing new…THEY JUST. DON’T. GET IT.

FIFY. Keeping it real.

The man knows who his heroes are, and those people get his attention. Dead uniforms don’t qualify. Well, not live ones either.

Next!

From reading the comments I take it that most seem to be unaware that there are more than one electronic pen signature created for each new president. I will assume the one used to sign the bill was retired. The rest are there so that the same electronic signature does not appear all the time, as in this situation where the same form letter is being sent out. If they are different, then it says someone had the cared enough not to use the same template for all, or crafty enough to foresee that someone might decided to compare the form letters.

For men who achieve the ultimate goal in the war against terroism and the attack on our country, a form letter is the ultimate slap in their face, the ulitmate dishonor, the ultimate message of a socialist who decries spending money on the military that could be used building socialism at home, money that is needed to pay for the expansion of government, money that is needed to chain the people and take away the freedom the soldiers died to protect.

res ipsa loquitur
Latin for “the thing speaks for itself”.

Da rapper be ded, da troops be ded, and Slappy be a memorializin’ da brotha.
“Yo, Dawg … We miss you!”

NO ONE in the military will miss B. Hussein Obama.

I hope the lawsuit against the SEAL who wrote the book will do Obama and his capos in, for eternity.

All the way to the SC, good SEAL!!!

who’s wife has dedicated her time in office to personally help veterans to get hired (I know, I was at one of those events) hates the military.

StoneKrab on August 31, 2012 at 8:30 AM

Her “time in office” ?? Who, pray tell, elected Michelle to any office? God spare us from that ever happening.

And the proper word is “whose” not “who’s”.

Everyone else has pretty well written responses to your ignorant comments (which you keep supplying more of in response) but I still will add mine:\

This is not the first time Owe has dissed the military – He can’t pronounce Corpsmen, gets the name of the medal of honor winner wrong, takes pictures of himself with caskets of troops when requested not to do so by their families, complains about too much time doing photo ops with our troops, allows military sensitive leaks from our White House, does a “shout out” before mentioning the Ft. Hood masacure, gets ranks wrong several times when referring to a military member, refused to authorize the Bin Laden mission 3 times before taking 16 hours the 4th time to approve it, releases sensitive information on those who performed the mission he took credit for and THEN sends form letters when several of them are murdered after HIS release of information.

It is the Pentagon that will take the massive hit next year for HIS overspending. It was Owe that spent that money to payoff his cronies. Owe also is suing one of the states to prevent them from giving the US Military overseas and extra 2 days to get in absentee ballots. It is Owe that’s been absent from several memorial day celebrations and has no clue of the difference and distinctions between Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

With all those FACTS – you still believe Owe 1. loves 2. likes 3. can stand the Military?

Are you sure you’ve found the right website? Perhaps you’d find it more ‘fulfilling’ to be writing in your diary at dkos.
The truth has been told about your obamassiah’s actions leading up to and during the OBL takedown. And all the denials and name-calling in the world, from the white house echo chamber, isn’t going to change it. It’s not just evil Republicans slamming lil barry for his inability to act decisively – but his fellow democRATs and cabinet members.

But, you assclowns keep beating that dead horse. Maybe lil barry can use it to ride out of town after he loses.

Solaratov on August 31, 2012 at 2:09 PM

Did the letters say “corpse man”?

After all, they were dead.

StoneKrab on August 31, 2012 at 8:52 AM

Given that lil barry uses a fake draft card (ie; never registered as per law) and biden got five deferments during VietNam…that’s an avenue down which you may not want to go.

Solaratov on August 31, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Barack Hussein Obama is an utter disgrace.

Fore! For shame.

Crapweasel is too much of a compliment for this unfeeling, unAmerican, unfunny excuse for a leader.
