Matthews to Rice: You meant to go after birthers with your speech, huh?

posted at 9:21 am on August 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Talk about your Rorschach moments. Condoleezza Rice gave a stirring speech that touched on the necessity of American engagement abroad, a need for education reform, and the true meaning of American exceptionalism.  She talked about transcending a childhood in the Jim Crow era in Birmingham, Alabama to become her nation’s chief diplomat, and spoke hopefully of shaping the next generation for “greatness.”  The speech was such a success that reporters on Twitter wondered whether it would serve as a springboard for a future presidential run:

Rich Lowry observed that the start of the Condi-for-VP buzz from Mitt Romney’s Colorado event earlier this year may have been a speech like this:

But you know what Chris Matthews heard during this speech?  Birthers screaming in anguish, or something.  Matthews interrupted Andrea Mitchell to make sure she pinned Rice down on Matthews’ obsession.  Rice, however, wasn’t going to play along:

Translation:Your question is so idiotic, I’m going to do you the favor of pretending you asked me something intelligent and answer that instead.

Oh, it’s CM. Nevermind.

pambi on August 30, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Matthews didn’t say that Rice included birtherism in her speech. His question wanted to know, in effect, whether she agreed with him that the Republican Party was filled with birthers. “Was [her speech] kind of a rejoinder to all the birtherism and narrowness that she’s heard in her party?”

NotCoach on August 30, 2012 at 10:07 AM

If the major networks dare to give the Democrat Convention more coverage, then it will be obvious that they have hit a new low in their bias. PLEASE, let’s call them out on this now, so they’ll know that they’re being watched closely.

ardenenoch on August 30, 2012 at 10:02 AM

It’s been obvious for years. The best way to combat it is not to “call them out on it”, but rather to circumvent it. Use your facebook account to ‘like’ videos of the speeches, use your twitter account to link to and comment on them, post them on your blog, email them to your friends.

Crying out in the wilderness is not going to change the state-run media. Getting the message out through other channels will starve them of ratings and destroy them through attrition.

Dr. Rice TOTALLY ignored the question. If you go back and listen to her response, when referring to “both sides of the isle”, Dr. Rice was speaking about America “pulling back” as a global force/influence (a concept with which she disagrees).

pain train on August 30, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Rice did the exact correct thing- she ignored his birther ranting, and answered the real question.

I thought for a moment Andrea Mitchell was going to refuse to ask the question and get into it with Matthews in front of the cameras. Watch her face.

MarkT on August 30, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Nothing she said had anything to do with birthers — nothing at all. In fact, she never came anywhere near discussing things to do with birth — including abortion (a topic about which I strongly disagree with Ms. Rice). It was foreign policy and education and American exceptionalism — three things about which Rice is definitely qualified to speak. Now, she did mention one place where she thinks we have more growing to do — in terms of immigration policy — and she did it in a way that probably has heads popping over here at HotAir — for I’ve taken her position on immigration on these threads for some time, with predictable results.

No, listen carefully to Matthew’s question. He is trying to tie the speech to a renunciation of “all the birtherism and narrowness she’s heard in her party”. The wording on his part is careful — the actions of a few tar the actions of the many. It would be like someone on our side asking one of the Democratic heavy lifters whether his or her speech is a renunciation of the child murderers who infest the Democratic Party.

Since Windows 95 was code named “Chicago”

Bill Gates is a racist
since MSNBC was part of Microsoft, MSNBC is racist
since MSNBC is part of NBC, NBC is racist
which means Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey is also racist

Yes.

Chris Matthews and MSNBC Now Claim the Word ‘Chicago’ Is Racist

As I said in the open thread this morning, when Chrissy takes his final breath he’ll be mumbling, “racists, they’re all racists.”

Flora Duh on August 30, 2012 at 9:47 AM

Oh goodie. Some of my husband’s extended family live there and now I can beg off because Chris Matthews will think I’m racist, plus they must be racists for living there and I won’t be a part of it!

Let me go run that by the husband.

SNORK!

It’s interesting that Yahoo political chief could be fired within hours over his bias, and Tingles is not, just because he never breaks into laughter, and delivers his malarky with a straight face. But as I stated before, he is so tied to Obama he absolutely has no where to go if Obama is thrown out. He’ll be gone.
Andrea Mitchell knows this, you can tell by her demeanor.

Marcus on August 30, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Yahoo would like to be considered serious news and has been trying to do so (with varying success YMMV). MSDNC has never held that illusion and has never tried hence the circus atmosphere with the head clown being Matthews.

It is somewhat working. Some of us tune in for the comedy aspect and about three people for what they believe to be actual “news”.

I do wonder if both the people watching to see what idiotic thing they say next and the conservative bloggers were to tune out whether their viewership would fall to the low hundreds.

They have so much more material now on CM, but the problem is CM himself is the real parody. CM has gone over the top.

I remember when I used to enjoy watching Chris Matthews. Even though he was a Democrat he used to ask tough questions on both sides of the aisle and I thoroughly enjoyed his program. This is back in the late 90s and early 00s.

Then somehow he lost his edge and fell into the tank for his party and became a lapdog and a parody of what political “hardball” is supposed to be. It’s sad, really.

Ed showing his true neoconservatism colors once again.

Dante on August 30, 2012 at 1:32 PM

Sorry but not being an isolationist does not equate to neoconservatism.

MikeknaJ on August 30, 2012 at 1:58 PM

I wonder if Chrissy and Andrea had been drinking? It’s an honest question.

claudius on August 30, 2012 at 2:33 PM

Sorry but not being an isolationist does not equate to neoconservatism.

MikeknaJ on August 30, 2012 at 1:58 PM

You are making a common mistake in equating non-interventionism with isolationsm. The opposite of interventionism is not isolationism, but is non-interventionism. Military interventionism is most certainly a hallmark – indeed, the foundation of neoconservatism.

The democrats do not have anyone that can match the ability of Ms Rice. Hillary, Alwrong-wright. Hell no.

democratsarefools on August 30, 2012 at 8:06 PM

Oh, my…the look on nitwit Mitchell’s face is classic:

“Oh, dead God, Matthews, will you STFU…!”

Maybe I had it wrong…
