Matthews to Rice: You meant to go after birthers with your speech, huh?

posted at 9:21 am on August 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Talk about your Rorschach moments. Condoleezza Rice gave a stirring speech that touched on the necessity of American engagement abroad, a need for education reform, and the true meaning of American exceptionalism.  She talked about transcending a childhood in the Jim Crow era in Birmingham, Alabama to become her nation’s chief diplomat, and spoke hopefully of shaping the next generation for “greatness.”  The speech was such a success that reporters on Twitter wondered whether it would serve as a springboard for a future presidential run:

Rich Lowry observed that the start of the Condi-for-VP buzz from Mitt Romney’s Colorado event earlier this year may have been a speech like this:

But you know what Chris Matthews heard during this speech?  Birthers screaming in anguish, or something.  Matthews interrupted Andrea Mitchell to make sure she pinned Rice down on Matthews’ obsession.  Rice, however, wasn’t going to play along:

Translation:Your question is so idiotic, I’m going to do you the favor of pretending you asked me something intelligent and answer that instead.

AubieJon on August 30, 2012 at 9:28 AM

Tingles couldn’t be happier with the publicity and after saying using “Chicago” is the same as using the n-word, look for him to say the way the Republicans breathe is racist. And next week, every speech is going to be a “historic moment”.

What does he have to lose? His entire future is tethered to Obama. If one goes down, so does the other.

It’s good to see MSNBC acknowledging the existence of a black person at the convention, even if it is to try to drag her into their delusions.

Night Owl on August 30, 2012 at 9:28 AM

I’ll admit I got a little misty eyed when Secretary Rice spoke of not being able to eat at the lunch counter at the Birmingham Woolworth’s. Let’s never forget THAT is the struggle that she personally knows; the flaw in American liberty that had to be overcome before we could truly call ourselves free.

Contrast that to another prominent individual I could name who thinks he knows personally about the struggle of African-Americans because in the 1990s he walked out of class at Harvard Law School because the department decided an African-American professor’s work simply wasn’t sufficient to give her tenure.

radjah shelduck on August 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM

Tingles is just looking to find any republican to take the bait and give substance to his idiotic claim of racism.

bgibbs1000 on August 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM

The “Birtherism” and “narrowness” is all in Chris Matthews’ own head! Someone needs to tell him, just because you think it, doesn’t mean it’s true. His head is full of nonsense, which he then just goes with. He embarrasses himself. I’m embarrassed for him.

The look on Condoleezza Rice’s face when she heard Chris Matthews’ question was priceless.

America has done good in the world. By being a nation that once looked upon individual liberty and personal freedoms as the center stone of our Constitutional Republic we became a beacon of light and freedom. However, building schools that will be torn down, and training Afghani cops that turn turn their weapons on American solider isn’t part of that beacon. Additionally, when the President and members of both sides of congress vote for an act (NDAA)which contains language allowing the executive branch to selectively and indefinitely detain US citizens on US soil without their 4th and 5th Amendment rights…well…that beacons been turned off.

Matthews interrupting a black woman while being interviewed on TV is clearly racist.

……clearly Matthews was projecting his obvious dis-respect and his aryan belief that he being white….clearly meant that what he had to say was much more important than what some black woman had to say.

…..and did you hear how he stated “narrowness” and “her” right together as if a black woman is not intelligent enough to have wide ranging views.

….goes right to Matthews aryan belief that blacks are somehow “sub-human” and will never have the intelligence to exist on the same level as him and his aryan brothers and sister.

MSBNC needs to hold Matthews accountable for his obvious racist, bigoted dialogue that has no place on the American airwaves.

At some point, and I suspect the time is near, Matthews is going to say something so absurd or offensive that his employer will have to do something about him. The video of the meltdown will go viral within minutes.

Condi Rice’s raw intellectual ability and grace was on full display last night (she spoke from notes and not teleprompter). She’s one of those people who clearly is comfortable with who she is and doesn’t need the spotlight to feel successful. I think she truly means it when she says that she’s done with DC.

affenhauer on August 30, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Allah, Ed, Erika, Jazz Shaw, SOMEBODY.

Can we PLEASE have a post today on the fact that none of the major networks saw fit to show prime time speeches by Condi Rice and Susanna Martinez? Even if these two prime time speeches were made by two old White guys, since when do the major networks start their coverage of a political convention at 10 PM, and then spend the first half hour talking amongst themselves about the one speech that they’re willing to show, while two other prominent speakers are on the stage?

The fact that Rice and Martinez are both female minorities makes this seem even more unseemly. I’ve been watching political conventions since I was 6 years old in 1968. I know that in recent years the coverage has become much more abbreviated, but this seems unprecedented. Will the talking heads be talking over Marco Rubio’s speech tonight as well?

So far, over the course of two nights, the major networks have shown a total of 3 speeches. That means that by the end of the convention, the total amount of speeches they will have shown will be either 4 or 5 (depending on if they show Rubio’s speech tonight). I really hope that some prominent Conservatives and GOP politicians will warn the major networks that they better not show more than 4 or 5 speeches total from the Democrat Convention.

My gut feeling is that the major networks are using the excuse that interest in these political conventions has diminished to the point that audiences only want to see the most major speeches, in order to give themselves cover to block out speeches by prominent GOP minorities, in an attempt to promote the Democrat’s desperate strategy of portraying the Republicans as woman hating bigots, which is all they have left, in light of Obama’s dismal record.

If the major networks dare to give the Democrat Convention more coverage, then it will be obvious that they have hit a new low in their bias. PLEASE, let’s call them out on this now, so they’ll know that they’re being watched closely.
