Video: Guy & MKH preview Ryan speech, RNC Day Two

posted at 7:43 pm on August 29, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

We’re experimenting a little with Ustream from our spots above the Republican National Convention floor. Guy Benson of Townhall and I had a quick conversation tonight about what to expect from Paul Ryan’s speech. Also, what’s with the revamped conventional wisdom on Gov. Chris Christie’s speech? Somewhere between Tuesday night and midday, it went from fab to a “flop” in the prevailing narrative. We disagree.

Video streaming by Ustream

Guy’s got more on the whole speaker line-up and what to expect. He wants Ryan to feel free to go full nerd:

I hope he goes at least “half-wonk,” clearly and honestly explicating the problems we face, exposing the president’s failure to address them, and offering his ticket’s solutions. I wouldn’t mind seeing a debt chart or two displayed on the high-tech arrangement of screens that serve as the podium’s backdrop. Numbers are Ryan’s strength. And those numbers represent what’s at stake in this election. I hope the Romney campaign isn’t afraid to allow him to be the sunny, serious explainer-in-chief that he is. It doesn’t have to be overly wonky, nor does this topic necessitate a dry presentation. But vague, uplifting generalities aren’t the currency in which Ryan trades. Unleash the solutions-oriented, competent, unthreatening nerd.

Why does every speech this year start with a multi-generation family history?

steebo77 on August 29, 2012 at 8:37 PM

I have no idea who Pam Bondi is, but I would worship at any church devoted to her existence.

Alternately, I would turn myself in for any crime thus accused, with the stipulation that i be treated harshly. HARSHLY!

Painful to watch. I only wish they had gotten all 27 AGs who are suing (or as many of them that are Republican or willing to show). It would have made a far better point than the painful banter that reminded me of bad chemistry at last year’s Oscar ceremonies.

Of course, I don’t know how many folks hereabout remember Booker T. But “Onions” was a must-know tune for any self respecting band back in the day, lol. I could play it in my sleep to this day.

I always liked Booker T. & the MGs and have a bunch of their tunes on my iPod. I was just a kid when they were popular, but I had the fun of discovering them now. There’s a radio station in my neck of the woods that plays four hours of funk every Saturday and opens every show with “Hang ‘Em High,” and plays plenty of their other music as well. Then it’s Blues for the remainder of the night, but some of the deejays slip in a couple of their tunes then, too.

Back in the 90s, Steve Cropper, Booker T, and Donald “Duck” Dunn gave a great interview on the PBS series “Rock and Roll: An Unruly History.” It was terrific — lots of great conversation and cool old concert footage.

I missed that – PBS has done some good rock&roll music history docs. The great thing about the internet is that you can stream radio of your fav genre pretty much anytime you want.

I taped it on VHS, but as I understood, WGBH Boston only made the whole series available to schools and libraries, not to sell to the general public. I’ve looked it up online; apparently, WGBH had some of the same copyright issues with releasing it as did the creators of the TV show “The Wonder Years,” but as long as it was limited to schools and libraries, it was OK.

And yep, there are a ton of Internet radio stations that I have in regular rotation in my iTunes — a station for every mood! The Internet: greatest thing since sliced bread! :D

Ah, yes. Licensing music is sometimes a problem, I believe “Freaks and Geeks” had a similar problem. Some TV shows/movies just use different music than was in their original work when it’s released on DVD.
