Fired Yahoo bureau chief: Sorry for my inappropriate “joke”

posted at 6:35 pm on August 29, 2012 by Allahpundit

Go watch the clip again. There’s nothing jokey or witty or clever about it. It’s a straightforward accusation of racism and callousness, and of course one of the other schmucks there laughs because he’s a nasty liberal hack too who’s thinking the same thing. It’s a laugh of recognition, and maybe a bit of surprise that Chalian would be willing to say that with mics around.

So here’s his attempt to make himself employable again:

I am profoundly sorry for making an inappropriate and thoughtless joke. I was commenting on the challenge of staging a convention during a hurricane and about campaign optics. I have apologized to the Romney campaign, and I want to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to Gov. and Mrs. Romney. I also regret causing any distraction from the exceptional coverage of the Republican convention by Yahoo News and ABC News.

If you believe that he was making a neutral comment about convention optics, you also need to believe that he would have said the same thing if Democrats had been holding their convention this week. Show of hands: Anybody?

I need to make way for MKH, Erika, and Jazz as tonight’s convention live-blogging begins, but in honor of the media’s “all racism, all the time” strategy to distract from what’s happening at the podium, I’ll leave you with this (via the Washington Free Beacon). Are you one of those millions of voters who find Obama irritatingly professorial and aloof, an Ivory Tower liberal if ever there was one? Well, turns out the GOP’s got a master plan to convince you that he’s not that guy at all but rather some sort of sex-crazed wildman, per archaic racial stereotypes. And the way they’re going to do this is to compare him to Tiger Woods. But rather than directly compare him to Woods, they’re simply to going to mention that he golfs a lot and let you draw the necessary connecting lines. Obama –> golf –> Tiger –> lots of sex –> racism. Two things to watch here. One: At the start, at least, Martin Bashir is actually the voice of reason. Think about that. Turn that idea over in your mind for a few seconds. Martin Bashir is now the sane, sober guy on MSNBC. Two: By the end of the clip, it sounds like O’Donnell thinks there’s an explicit reference to Woods in McConnell’s speech, to the point where he’s talking about speechwriters brainstorming over it. But Bashir never quotes anything about Woods. He only quotes a reference to the PGA tour. It’s O’Donnell who supplies the Woods reference and then convicts McConnell of racism for it. You’ll never find a better microcosm of left-wing “dog whistle” analysis.

HotAirLib on August 29, 2012 at 6:58 PM

Frankly, you have no proof that the act was racially motivated. The camerawoman was working for one of the biased media outlets; it is entirely within reason that the person mocking the camerawoman would have done so if the camerawoman was a man, white, green, grey or purple. She was working for CNN, that alone deserves derision.

It would be rigged. Every tenth space is Republican, but the player still loses points for not getting liberal sooner.

“We’re letting you go, Chris. You failed to help re-elect our Beloved One, so we don’t need you any more. We need fresh blood now. You only rant and spit, and we need younger people who can better articulate the racism that got our Messiah deposed.

“Oh, and by the way–we’re cancelling your health insurance because it costs too much, and it’s cheaper for us to pay the tax on you when you no longer work for us. Obamacare has you covered, though!”

Liam on August 29, 2012 at 8:13 PM

Dog whistles.

I’d like to suggest that the left at large go in and have their hearing examined. If that fails to reveal any cause for these auditory hallucinations, I’d seriously suggest a complete brain scan and neurological analysis.

Anyone who frequently and persistently believes they hear whistling sounds, when there are none to be heard in the normal human range of hearing, definitely needs to find out what ails them.

Left Coast Right Mind on August 29, 2012 at 9:51 PM

You mean try this??

An attendee at the Republican National Convention in Tampa on Tuesday allegedly threw nuts at a black camerawoman working for CNN and said “This is how we feed animals” before being removed from the convention, a network official confirmed to TPM.

Red herrings are lame.

fossten on August 29, 2012 at 9:51 PM

I don’t understand, isn’t calling someone an animal just a general insult, not a racially motivated one? Bush was called a monkey and that wasn’t racist, but calling a camerawoman an animal is racist?

I’ve been searching, trying to find out whom the “panelists” were for this episode. I want to know who the woman is that begins the provocations with:

“hey john, feel free to say it, they aren’t concerned at all”

Who is she, and who is John/Jon.

John Kettlewell on August 29, 2012 at 10:26 PM

forgot to add that was the lead in to the Yahoo!!!!! dude with diarrhea mouth. You need the 16sec vid, instead of the 8sec excerpt.

This fellow should not be allowed to fade quietly out of sight. He should be hounded whenever he shows up for years to come. Swine.

The democrat media complex.. has officially gone completely insane.

shake.. no..

shake.. no..

shake…. not a chance.

shake .. not today..

shake.. nope..

shake… are you nuts?…..

shake shake shake shake shake.. … yes yes.. please don’t hurt magic 8 Ball….

AAAAA-HAAAAAAAAAA….

THE DETECTIVE MINDS OF MSNBC AT WORK…..

It would be easier to just hate them.. but ther’re so pathetically insane, incompetently trying again and again to make that racism charge stick.. it’s sick.. it’s sad.. like watching a zombie film and watching the legless zombie drag itself around.. always just to slow.. to catch anyone..

Remember, it’s called “fun-employment”.

BDavis on August 30, 2012 at 2:56 AM

If folks don’t wish do apologize, don’t.
Just do not qualify it.
“To whomever (idiot) was insulted”, etc.

Joke? Dismissing this as a Joke adds insult to injury.
The problem is the audience, not the comment.

Yahoo pleasantly surprised me by offing this clown.
Chalian is a name I will now make a point to remember.

PaleoRider on August 30, 2012 at 5:58 AM

Don’t piss down my back and tell me it’s raining.
You said it, you meant it, so own it you democRAT.
Conservatives should STOP going on these “little liberal news” shows, they really serve no purpose AT ALL.

mmcnamer1 on August 30, 2012 at 6:40 AM

Let me sum up the left’s belief system in one sentence: Either you agree with Not Your Father’s Democrat Party that the solution to poverty comes from the Federal Government or you hate brown & black people.

O’Donnell’s using the Chewbacca Defense in connecting Obama->Golf->Tiger Woods->sex->racism.

Jack Squat Bupkis on August 30, 2012 at 8:10 AM

On the bright side, the ‘Republicans are partying will black people drown’ narrative was out there before this clown over-played the MSMs hand and unintentionally did to it what Palin’s ‘Death Panels’ commentary very much on purpose did to the ‘Republicans are heartless ba$tard$ for opposing Obamacare’ narrative.

Cue Nelson Muntz.

roy_batty on August 30, 2012 at 8:36 AM

I think that the raciiissst card has been played so hard and so stupidly that everytime they play it we get a new Romney vote. Go strong MSNBC, jilted people are often not very bright, and you are showing that in spades.

Zomcon JEM on August 30, 2012 at 8:42 AM

. . . as for MSNBC, it’s pure, putrid liberal goat dung.

rplat on August 30, 2012 at 8:49 AM

The left says some very, very inappropriate things and when called on them, OH! I’m so sorry, what crap that is but it depends on what the definition of is,is.

mixplix on August 30, 2012 at 8:57 AM

I still can’t figure out how it is that Obama spent 20 years in a vile, screaming racist church and we’re the racists.

arand on August 30, 2012 at 9:30 AM

I am pleasantly surprised to see Yahoo! fired him. As far as MSNBC goes I cannot understand how their miniscule viewership warrants constant attention from Conservatives.
