Rising GOP star: Mia Love is in the house

posted at 8:17 pm on August 28, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

The theme of tonight’s convention session at the RNC is “We Built It”, and rising conservative star Mia Love helped get the lineup of speakers off to a great start and showed ‘em how it’s done with a brief spotlight speech focusing on the American dream and self-reliance. Love, the current mayor of Saratoga Springs, is running for the U.S. House of Representatives out of Utah, and she’s in the midst of a tight race against incumbent Democrat Rep. Jim Matheson — if she wins, she’ll be the first black Republican woman elected to the Congress. She had some fightin’ words for President Obama in her speech tonight, and the crowd went wild with a very warm reception for her. Are we looking at the next tea-party rockstar, perhaps?

The money line: “Mr. President, I’m here to tell you that the American people are awake, and we’re not buying what you’re selling in 2012.” Bam.

Wow Mia – you are a shining star in the wings – can’t wait to see where your life takes you.

jake-the-goose on August 28, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Obama’s four year tenure has damaged this nation. We elect R&R to save the nation and restore it to its preeminence in the world.

thatsafactjack on August 28, 2012 at 9:08 PM

Would this be the same Jim Matheson whose brother was appointed to a federal judgeship the very day Matheson agreed to vote for ObamaCare?

Kataklysmic on August 28, 2012 at 8:32 PM

One and the same…. And I have to echo the calls – DON’T HOPE – DONATE TO MIA LOVE.

Mia is a rising star but we need to get her past Matheson and building name recognition takes money!

And it cuts both ways. I’ve got a corrupt communist as my Congressman but the political campaigns are far more “civil” than I would like.

Happy Nomad on August 28, 2012 at 9:02 PM

Hmmm. Interesting. I had no idea.

Any chance you can resurrect Zombie Patrick Henry?

Say anyone know the name of the band playing earlier tonite at the convention. About couple hours ago. Kinda jazzy music, piano and horns. Some band members looked familiar. They were good.

i don’t have cable so i’m watching PBS. their covergae has a funereal feel to it. shocking, i know.

sbvft contributor on August 28, 2012 at 8:57 PM

Me either, but you can open another window and go to CSPAN.org where they are live streaming it without comment or commercials. I listen and then click on that window if it is someone I want to see, otherwise I just listen and read the comments here.

Also, you can download CSPAN Radio, CSPAN 1, 2, and 3 to a smartphone if you would like to just hear it.

Well a key slot at the RNC convention can’t hurt with name recognition! But you are right, part of grass roots activism has to be supporting promising candidates. The Dems do it through their union slush funds. Republicans have to do it the old-fashioned way, they have to earn it.

Happy Nomad on August 28, 2012 at 9:14 PM

No RNC open thread?

I feel a little bit empty…

JohnGalt23 on August 28, 2012 at 8:33 PM

Yeah, I was wondering about that as well. I vote for an Open Thread!

PatriotGal2257 on August 28, 2012 at 9:15 PM

Horrible coverage on CNN the past few hours. They aren’t showing any speeches of governors. Fox and MSNBC were showing them every time I flipped over. CNN alternates between hurricane coverage and stupid left wing talking points interviews. They are trying to control the narrative and prevent their viewers from getting a Republican message.

True but the other point he made when he did it was that there wasn’t any hesitancy to attack Carter. I’m not hearing anybody hold back in their attacks on Obama tonight.

serendip2b on August 28, 2012 at 9:19 PM

Female, black, Mormon, Republican—Chrissie Matthews/MSM/liberals must be horrified and traumatized.

bailey24 on August 28, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Why they have “Civil Right Leaders” to constantly remind them of who they are and keep them in their place. To remind they that if they get out of their place the Democrats will put them back in Chains like Joe Biden just said.

This thread almost never mentions the race because we just plain accept and do not even see the color. After all color is meaningless.

The Democrats though are well aware that over all the Blacks win in the gene pool. Professional Sports is almost all black. Now the political rising stars are also black far more than their population would indicate.

Democrats are very afraid that blacks will finally completely remove their chains. They are afraid because they know if they do that the white power the true white power in the DNC will lose out.

Hopefully the Conservatives in the Republican Party will win this and bring an end to seeing color and thinking it means anything what so ever.

Anyone who has computer access, go to YouTube’s GOP Convention Channel and you’ll hear every speech, every musician, every video presentation by everyone. No liberals to ruin everything, no Dem snark, no MSM cutting away to show footage of Hurricane Katrina, just the unedited GOP Convention. I’m listening to it online at work and occasionally peering at the screen.

WOW! WOW! WOW!

He’s actually delivering a speech at the convention!!! He’s wandering the stage and clearly speaking to the audience as well as the rest of us. Did I say WOW!

Happy Nomad on August 28, 2012 at 9:45 PM

First time I have really heard Cruz give a speech. Wow! Great job Texas! I am very impressed and inspired. Best speech of the night thus far.

weaselyone on August 28, 2012 at 9:46 PM

Anyone who has computer access, try to watch the convention on YouTube, the 2012 Republican National Convention channel instead of CNN (ick), MSNBC (blech) or any of the alphabet networks (yuk). Starve them out starting now, if you haven’t already done so.

They want to set a narrative? Yeah, let it be that as many people as possible bypass it and hear our commentary and criticism on it here and other conservative blogs.

PatriotGal2257 on August 28, 2012 at 9:48 PM

Artur Davis now.

And I’m waiting for the Amen response from the crowd to this speech.

I know that we are not the undecideds but this is an awesome night!

It affirms our values. It affirms our faith in America. It gives us hope that our elected leaders have our same values. For these reasons party conventions are still important.

I wonder how Chris Matthews et. al are going to paint this one as an evil racist? Oh, they’ll figure out a way. Afterall, she’s not a ‘genuine’ black lady. She didn’t Civil Rights struggle like Al Sharpton did: Therefore she isn’t really black and thus a raaaaaacist.

MSNBC will say that she is a prop for the Republicans so they can “trick” the voters into thinking that they aren’t racist.
