An early view from Tampa

posted at 3:21 pm on August 28, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

In addition to the usual speech videos and coverage, we thought we’d bring you a little taste of the goings on behind the scenes in Tampa this week. The first thing you’ll want to know is that it’s hot. And humid. (Who could have guessed holding a convention in Tampa in August could result in that?) The biggest complaint I hear – primarily – from female delegates and politicos is… frizzed hair.

The second thing to know is that the security is… off the hook. From the outside of the blocked off perimeter in the city to actually getting in to the media filing center I counted seven security stops. Four of these involved people inspecting your credentials and ID and three went further with metal detectors, scanners for bags and – in once case – bomb sniffing dogs. Helicopters circle the area constantly and law enforcement officials ranging from the local sheriffs to the Secret Service patrol the area in packs on foot, on bikes or in vehicles.

ConvSecurity

After leaving the media center there is a relatively short walk to the actual convention hall. But on the way there is another security stop, complete with scanners and metal detectors. But once you get inside the scene is very impressive. The hall is done up wonderfully and the view is great from most all levels.

ConvHall

All of the major media outlets are represented, but Fox News really seems to have snagged the ideal location. So if you’re watching the coverage there, here’s where the hosts are actually working, as seen from up in the cheap seats.

FoxNewsConv

Oh, and as you may have heard, in keeping with one of the major themes of both the convention and the Romney campaign, there is a debt clock running continuously, showing how much more debt Washington is running up just since the beginning of the convention.

DebtClock

Also, the RNC has announced another respectful element to the schedule this year.

The first day of the 2012 Republican National Convention will include a moment
to remember and honor some of the Republican leaders who died since the 2008 Republican
convention in Minneapolis. The names of many of the deceased will scroll on a convention
video screen.

Among those who will be remembered and whose names will be read are:

Paul Harvey Aurandt (AZ)
Hattie Bickmore (ME)
Dave Bitner (FL)
Andrew Breitbart (CA)
William Perry Clements, Jr. (TX)
Edward Derwinski (IL)
Kenneth Guinn (NV)
Alexander Haig, Jr. (PA)
Mark Hatfield (OR)
Harold Guy Hunt (AL)
William Janklow (SD)
Jack Kemp (NY)
Robert Mosbacher, Sr. (TX)
Charles Percy (IL)
William Bart Saxbe (OH)
Ted Stevens (AK)
Peter Terpeluk, Jr. (PA)
Malcolm Wallop (WY)

As I file this report, the afternoon session is kicking off and the RNC chair is revving up the crowd. We’ll be bringing you more coverage as the week goes on. Enjoy!

I think the debt clock is a great way to remind people of the bush tax cuts and the two wars that still havent been paid for.

I understand the Republicans run on cutting spending but why do people believe that? No Republican President in the last 30-40 years has cut spending.

Yet, people want us to believe that Mitt Romney will be that guy?

I dont buy it. Sorry.

I understand the frustration of the Obama voters in those new rnc ads but what will be different from voting republican..no politican keeps their promise…period.

They really need to focus on the clock some tonight. Have a moment where they are asked to turn their attention to the clock and observe it in silence. The camera pans to it and focuses on the number as it ticks up the amount of your family’s entire yearly income in one second. And remind the viewers none of it has been paid for.

Well, if FOX indeed snagged the “ideal location” then bravo, they earned it and deserve it–who knows which nosebleed section they’ll be stuck in at Time Warner Cable Arena next week in Charlotte. Watch out for Bobcats.

Two things to keep in mind:

1) “Lightning” has been known to strike often inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum
and
2) At least the Republicans can say the actual name of the place where their candidate will be accepting the nomination. Can any lefturd Doom say “Bank of America”? Hmmm, Dooms, Bobcats and Panthers.

Look at this ignorant assclown. Either no clue at all, or deliberately lying, counting on his audience not knowing that federal tax revenues INCREASED under those tax cuts.

Democrat’s ‘zero sum’ misrepresentations about economics truly are contemptible. Grossly ignorant AND deliberately misleading. All to perpetuate their ideology of impoverishment upon us all.

hillsoftx on August 28, 2012 at 4:53 PM

You’re confusing increased taxes on the top 1% with a restoration of the pre-Bush tax rate on the highest taxable income brackets, which amounts to $750 bil in additional revenue over 10 years.
https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.businessweek.com%2Fmz%2F10%2F39%2F1039poltaxes33.pdf%3Fchan%3Dmagazine%2Bchannel_news%2B-%2Bpolitics%2B%252B%2Bpolicy

But taxes alone can’t balance the budget- real entitlement reform is also a must.

bayam on August 28, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Disagree on Fox News’ location; their booth is right above the audio speakers, and you can’t hear the commentators or their guests at all, especially when there is music playing! Yikes, it’s really bad. I even sent them an email about this. I was listening to Megyn Kelly this morning, and she had to stop her intervviews several times because they couldn’t talk loud enough over the music to even hear themselves.I don’t know what they can do; a white noise machine to form a barrier? I actually switched over to (horrors) CNN, and no problem there. Too bad, because I’d much prefer to watch Fox.

For the ladies with the frizzing hair, the solution I found that actually worked was Redken Airtight hair spray. I don’t know that it’s sold any more, but it worked very well in Tampa, FL. (And I had to mash a DCU cap on my head whenever I went outside.)

I hear the Redken forceful 23 works pretty well, but haven’t tried it myself.
