Video: Matthews accuses GOP of playing the race card against team that accused Romney of wanting to bring back slavery, or something

posted at 10:01 am on August 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

I’m posting this for two reasons.  One, everyone’s talking about it anyway.  Two, the sheer nonsense from Chris Matthews in this segment killed those brain cells I used to have that would have otherwise kept me from posting it.  Be warned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yiet_fyN_ng&feature=player_embedded

I think Matthews is actually right.  Here’s the Romney campaign playing the race card earlier this month:

What?  Joe Biden’s campaigning for Obama?  Could have fooled me.

Like Matthews, I don’t really get the joke from Romney’s Michigan speech, but it’s very clear that it was meant as a joke.  That’s as far as I go with Matthews.  If debate over federal programs like welfare are suddenly evidence of latent racism, then we should end the program altogether so as to keep it from being a topic of national debate.  Absurd?  So is Matthews’ blanket assertion that discussing Obama’s executive order that weakened the bipartisan welfare reform signed by Bill Clinton into law amounts to a racist attack on Obama.  What’s next?  Will discussing the failure of Obama’s stimulus bill be racist?  Discussing an unemployment rate of 8.3%, a U-6 number back over 15%, and the lowest civilian participation rate in 30 years?

Matthews obviously doesn’t want any discussion of Obama’s record, and wants to scare Republicans away from it by toxifying those issues as raaaaaaaaaaacist.  The aromas of desperation and fear are strong in this clip.

I’ve long said that someone will commit a career-ending act(either that, or their head will explode) on MSDNC on Election Night right around the time it becomes clear that Romney will be the next President. Matthews seems like the best bet right now.

Rational Thought on August 27, 2012 at 10:06 AM

What is there not to get about the birth certificate joke?

As far as Matthews goes, this is all they have. Accuse the other side of racism to inoculate Obama from the criticism. They won’t know what do in ’16 should their nominee in ’16 not be black.

changer1701 on August 27, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Matthew’s opened his show asking if Mitt Romney could overcome his ‘awkwardness.’

I would stop propagating Matthew’s propaganda.

HopeHeFails on August 27, 2012 at 10:07 AM

The race card, as played like this, will backfire. Most people resent being called racists when they know damn well they’re not.

So keep it up Chrissy. Keep driving people away from Bammy.

Bat Chain Puller on August 27, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Unclench there Chris, for pete’s sake. You humorless Democrats are so chronically disaffected and divine racism in just about every quip that it makes you malcontented and impossible to deal with. You’ll have lots of opportunities to leg-hump and tingle with the Office of the Future Former President, so just take a chill pill and relax.

ted c on August 27, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Matthews has jumped the shark. He is certifiable, a virtuoso in the Johnny-one-note obsession. He sees racists everywhere.

Oh, Chrissy. You protest too much. Which means you think it’s true — your president is under foreign influence, and always has been. And at the very end, when the brain-dead Mika says “Chris Matthews, thanks…I think,” she knows it, too. She knows Chrissy just overplayed his hand and showed what he’s scared of most of all — that voters will realize barack obama isn’t an American president.

The joke-joke part is about how some operatives tried to make his “from Michigan” an attempt to be mid-western and disown Mass, and that was killed by the people of Michigan in the primaries.

But the “birth certificate” part comes from how Mitt keeps pointing out 0 won’t disown the comments of Burton, Biden and Cutter. Then the Politico e-book unloads that Obama apparently holds actual contempt for Romney.

Mitt tried to be nice, but condescending, with the “he’s in over his head” line, but Obama’s response was to have other people turn him into Gordon Gekko.

So Romney decided to start throwing jabs when the opportunity arises and joined the two thoughts.

bayview on August 27, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Let’s be honest, however. Priebus’ uneasy squirming and failure to blast Mathews’ racist and nonsensical attack was most likely perceived by the left-leaning audience as evidence of Republican racism. If Republicans can’t fend off attacks like this with facts, then Obama will get another four years…

Republicans need to have clear, cogent responses for why Obama’s executive order “guts the work requirement”, why social security should be “privatized”, why abortion should be banned, or whatever. I haven’t heard any worthy explanations of these stands except by the bloggers here. Republicans are in deep trouble.

Ha, ha, from Twitter:

Wow. Chris Matthews just pulled ahead of Paul Krugman on Intrade re: Most Epic Public Meltdown if Romney Wins.

Rational Thought on August 27, 2012 at 10:31 AM

Matthews is a stuck-in-the-1970s liberal. He is like many white liberal Baby Boomers who saw Barack Obama as the second coming of RFK, and the intellectual descendant of Adlai Stevenson, with the added bonus of being black so they could assuage their white guilt by cheerleading for him. They really believed the whole country could be redeemed of its sordid past of slavery and racism by electing Obama. They have a great deal of emotional need tied up in him being successful and getting reelected.

It is kind of comical to watch the ferocity with which people like Matthews will defend this failed President, who has done nothing to deserve it and will never repay him.

Actually, when you watch the clip, Priebus is laughing during Chrissy’s rant. He appears genuinely amused by the unhinged ranting and the fact that he (Priebus) can’t get a word in edgewise. Especially amusing since he was supposed to be the guest on the show. Remember when show hosts actually asked their guests questions vs. lecturing them? This should be an embarrassment to PMSDNC, but it won’t be.

I got it and I’m sure every Michigander got it too. It’s just the liberals who chose not to. Yes, it is a reference to birtherism — but not that birthers are correct — just that W. Mitt is a well known quantity in Michigan, and Michiganders (or Birthers for that matter) don’t have to ask where he came from as we’ve all had to do with Barack H.

After all, Mitt never claimed to come from a foreign country in any bio he (or anyone connected to him) ever wrote. Mitt never claimed to have eaten Seamus, thus making us doubt his commonality with our culture.

I’m allowed to do this because liberals always figure out, in a day or two, how to spin any gaffe made by Biden or Obama.

unclesmrgol on August 27, 2012 at 10:37 AM

It’s virulent. And if Hillary had been president any criticism would be deemed sexist. It’s all in the playbook.

This continuing drumbeat of racist, racist, racist, first leads to the disturbing conclusion that it’s just not worth electing someone of “another” race or sex to office.

But concerns about being labeled racist (or sexist) didn’t stop the left from saying disgusting things about Condi Rice or Clarence Thomas.

So the more obvious and logical conclusion is that it’s not worth electing any leftist to office, which of course I knew already.

Like Matthews, I don’t really get the joke from Romney’s Michigan speech, but it’s very clear that it was meant as a joke.

“Joke” is a funny word. It can me so many things, to so many people.

Like a strategy of making sure that everyone… and I mean everyone… in the state of Michigan knows, via their local and national newscasts, on every blog Right, Left, and Center, in every newspaper regardless of whether their editors can even find Michigan on the map, that Mitt Romney was born in Michigan, and that his father was a pretty well-regarded governor of Michigan.

And the beauty of this strategy is the more Democrats get outraged over it, the more likely everyone in Michigan is going to know that underlying fact.

I think Joe did the right thing by letting Chrissy overreach. If Joe liked him, Joe would have rescued him.

Chrissy has a very public meltdown and CNN has sent Soledad from Tampa to New Orleans to cover the storm instead of the convention.

Not bad for a Monday morning.

Good, hope they keep her there..or else, who knows, we’ll get lecture, alas, again, on race theory complete with Tampa Cuban flair or something…to which she may or may not ad a white Hispanic flavour…

It seems to me that Matthews thinks all welfare recipients are minorities.

RedCrow on August 27, 2012 at 10:47 AM

Am I the only one who thought that? Priebus doesn’t pursue it, and gives a weak response. I would have jumped all over that hanging curve.

Maybe I’m reading too much into what Chrissy said.

@bekindyolo @FloraDuh1 He was referring 2 the long history of the RW meme about welfare&food stamps:). I hope that clarifies that 4 u.

Neah, he gave him that ‘i can’t be bothered’ complete with “is this man for real’ look and talk…very Priebus-like, reason why I like him so much…….
