Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on August 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

The task of Commander in Chief is daunting for every President, with the possible exception of men like Dwight Eisenhower and Ulysses S. Grant, who entered politics after commanding armies — in Eisenhower’s case, the largest multinational force ever put into the field at that time.  It helps, though, to learn the ranks of each of the services, and to make sure that you know in which service your top commanders lead:

Perhaps most seriously, however, was Obama’s slip in an interview with KSDK in St Louis, Missouri when he was asked about the new 22-minute film ‘Dishonorable Disclosures’ by a group of former Special Forces troops and intelligence operatives.

‘I won’t take this film too seriously,’ he responded. ‘I gather that one of the producers is a birther who still doesn’t think I was born in this country.

‘You’ve got one who was a candidate, a Republican candidate for office. And a proud card carrying member of the Tea Party. So this is obviously a partisan film.

‘I’d advise that you talk to General McRaven, who’s in charge of our Special Ops. I think he has a point of view in terms of how deeply

I care about what these folks do each and every day to protect our freedom.’

The difficulty with this is that William McRaven is and admiral not a general. As a SEAL, he is member of the US Navy, not US Army or US Marines.

D’oh! It could have been worse, as the Daily Mail notes.  Obama might have called Admiral McRaven a “corpseman.”

It’s time once again to show our support for Day By Day and its artist-publisher, Chris Muir.  Chris holds an annual fundraiser to keep the adventures of Sam, Zed, Jan, and Damon coming.  Chris, whose artwork has enhanced the OOTD feature since its inception for Hot Air readers, uses the funds raised for only the continuance of DBD.  As always, the fundraiser has many fabulous gifts available at whatever level one chooses to donate.  If you’re thinking about donating at the Jan/Damon level or above, you’ll get a Last Supper Red vs Blue magnet, which has depictions of personalities from New Media — myself included.  Donating at the Anatoly Level will get you a 9×15 print of the artwork.  Dig deep and be part of supporting the one of the best New Media cartoonists in the biz!

And if you want something really cool …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The top 3

1. The media will talk about abortion much more than will any speaker.

2. The media will bring up Todd Akin; no Republican will.

3. The media will explain that Romney needs to be “humanized” and then pronounce whatever attempts are made to do so as “unsuccessful,” “unconvincing” or “contrived.”

this is really a rookie flub and something that is completely excusable from someone who has utterly no idea about the rank structure of the officer corps of either service-ie, a civilian with little/no exposure to the armed forces. It is unexcusable from someone in command of joint forces. ADM McRaven surely shrugs it off but it does nothing to build confidence of those within your command.

The pathetic aspect of Obama’s failure to correctly identify Admiral McRaven’s rank is that Obama probably could rattle off statistics for the NBA players and teams. After all, the latter are a “big effin’ deal” to Preezy.

‘You’ve got one who was a candidate, a Republican candidate for office. And a proud card carrying member of the Tea Party. So this is obviously a partisan film.’

Things like this cannot continue to go unnoticed. I know that it seems trivial, but it remains a pure lie. The very thing which makes the Tea Party movement so fearsome to the Left is that there is no fixed organization, no definable heirarchy. Therefore, there are no cards. To say so is a fabrication. The progs will never get it, that the Tea Party is honest, patriotic Americans who want this nation to remain one dedicated to Liberty. We have the Constitution to lead us, we need no person to do so.

Your point is perfectly valid, and I’m not downplaying it in the least. It is a point of professionalism for senior military officers to study the service history of anyone for whom they will be presenting at a promotion or retirement, even if they hardly knew the subject prior. They will spend time interviewing the person to glean some anecdotal material. Then at the ceremony, they will be able to casually reference the subject’s tours, accomplishments, awards, personal life events, family, etc.

Any officer who did not prep in such a way for an event of that nature would look incompetent and careless.

Now imagine any other president failing to properly identify a flag officer, especially one he is referencing as a source for how much he cares about the military.
