Newt to Chris Matthews: Your thinking can be pretty racist, you know

posted at 7:42 pm on August 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via News Busters, you’ll enjoy watching Matthews being given a taste of his own medicine but this clip is more useful as a demonstration of why it’s pointless for the two sides to talk to each other. The problem isn’t that Tingles is willing to presume racism; the problem is that his presumption is irrebuttable, with subconscious racism the inevitable fallback presumption in cases like these when the accused protests vehemently enough. You’re guilty, even if you don’t know it. What possible good can a conversation with those parameters do except to provide a lazy blogger like me with easy content on a slow news night? It’d be more dignified for both of them if Gingrich just got up and left. Cede the airtime to some liberal guest who can come on and tell Matthews what he wants to hear. That’s not a useful conversation either, but at least both participants would respect the other’s good faith and sincerity. I’d prefer that to Dog-Whistle Theater.

When tingles hears “food stamps” he thinks “black guy” even though most people on food stamps are white people. Newt was right to call him out on his racist stereotypes. Way to go Newt!

The FIRST words out of the Mouths OF ANYONE who goes on CNN or MSNBC should be:

“Well, it’s HONOR to be here on this station and on your show – where you PRIMARY OBJECTIVE 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is to Re-Elect Barack Obama and to Denigrate Conservative. THANK YOU!!”

They should say it OVER and OVER!!

williamg on August 28, 2012 at 12:48 AM

The most vile racists in America are the “White Liberals”. These evil SOB’s are the one who have worked for the last 40 years on the total destruction of the black society by making a large number of them totally depending on tax payers handouts so their only option is to keep voting these evil liberals into power.

mnjg on August 27, 2012 at 10:16 PM

Do you realize that blacks constitute only one third of all welfare recipients and those on welfare vote at a far lesser rate than middle class Americans? In other words, welfare benefits are among the most inefficient ways to buy black votes. You’re playing into a theme that the GOP wants you to believe.

When tingles hears “food stamps” he thinks “black guy” even though most people on food stamps are white people. Newt was right to call him out on his racist stereotypes. Way to go Newt!

The bigger question for Romney’s campaign, and one that raises the accusations of racism, is the strategy behind the prominence of ads attacking Obama’s welfare reforms. Not even the GOP governor of Utah agrees that the changes ‘gut’ welfare work rules as backed up by FactCheck.org:
http://www.factcheck.org/2012/08/does-obamas-plan-gut-welfare-reform/

Given the relative obscurity of welfare as a national campaign issue and the misleading premise of the accusations, is it that surprising to ask why an ad depicting a black President giving away money to the lower class is currently the most widely broadcasted ad of the campaign? If it’s not racism, are these ads the opposite of Democratic “class welfare” attacks that accuse Romney of coddling the rich?

bayam on August 28, 2012 at 1:09 AM

The most intolerable part of Chris Matthews is that he talks over guests he does not like. He wants to pretend he is open to debate, but obviously he talks over anyone who is making a good point.

I can tell you this; had he called Reagan a racist while I was sitting there, that would have been the end of the discussion. My reply would have been:

“Chris, when you find something substantive to discuss, I’ll be happy to come back. The only racist here is you.”

goflyers on August 28, 2012 at 1:09 AM

Do you realize that blacks constitute only one third of all welfare recipients and those on welfare vote at a far lesser rate than middle class Americans?

Blacks account for One THIRD of all Welfare Recipients – when only 13% of Americans are Black?

So their contribution to Welfare Recipients is OVER 200% of their contribution to the Population?

Seeing as how most who actually work contribute to the tax trough for the pig parasitic class, your childish definition of “rich” is well…pretty fcking rich.

I will give you credit though for at least proposing a somewhat more feasible alternative to the tired racism card.

ClassicCon on August 28, 2012 at 1:54 AM

AP, you post is simply ridiculous. Having someone like Newt directly confront Matthews over his malevolent views about “coded” race messages is exactly what we need more of in this country. His argument simply dismantled Matthews idiotic dog whistle argument to his face. It is not pointless. It should be done over and over again.

When a Conservative uses the term ‘welfare queen’, liberals hear ‘black’ even though the Left has pushed for decades that most women on welfare are white. (look it up).

So, it’s obvious that every time a liberal hears the term he, like Chrissy, thinks only of black women.

Who are the racists, now?

Liam on August 27, 2012 at 8:03 PM

It’s a case of population charateristics: which racial type is representd in our (or any) population in what numbers.

There is a higher percentage of “White” by race in our U.S. population than there are Blacks (and among”White” is found Hispanics and immigrants from the Middle East, etc.).

So there are going to be more of ALL “things” (types, behaviors, needs, problems, achevements, liabilities, et.) found in the race that comprises the majority in our population (and, thus, “more Whites on Food Stamps than Blacks).

Blacks represent, what, 12 percent of our overall population? So even if they ALL were using Food Stamps (not possible, but saying as much for the sake of argument) they’ STILL not be using Food Stamps more than any other race.

Which isn’t to disagree with your point, however about the Liberal prejudicial state of mind overall and their default assumtion that negates Conservatives unrealistically.

As one who evidently hears the “dog whistle”, you completely miss the point, perhaps b/c you are listening TO the dog whistle.
The point is not that blacks are on welfare, but that racist, liberal, politicians that use the blight of poor minorities to politicize their views and consolidate their power. After all, what would those WHITE liberals do if any of their heart-felt policies actually eliminated poverty?

As for “Factcheck.org, it has been proved that they are a leftside attack group disguised as a non-partisan watchdog, so their research is immediatly tainted. However, from the link you provided -
“Ron Haskins, a former Republican House committee aide who was instrumental in the 1996 overhaul of the welfare program, told us the Obama administration should not have unilaterally changed the work-requirement”. The fact is that Obama has ALWAYS HATED Clinton and Gingrich’s welfare reform measure, and would dearly love to eliminate it completely. And when he is called on it, you libs sure do cry about it.

The Obama administration is using this as an excuse to gut the work requirements.

gwelf on August 28, 2012 at 10:08 AM

The desperate cries of racism merely show the shallowness of intellectual thought on the left. People like Chris Matthews and his ilk have so dilluted the meaning of racism that it no longer carries any weight as an accusation. Newt was right to call Matthews out as the racist because it is Matthews that can’t see beyond color and use any kind of critical thought to understand the facts. Clinging to the great society’s lofty goals will never change the fact that it has been a complete failure in American history. Women, children, and minorities have been hardest hit to borrow a phrase. The black people I am friends with and that I work with actually resent the left always labeling them as helpless victims. The Obama strategy of dividing the country along ugly class and racial lines will fail because it is so outside the essence of America.

Bush enabled every single last thing that Obama did, and Obama get the credit when things look good and Bush looks bad when things look bad. Look at the polls about who is to blame for the current mess we are in.

Progressive liberal Republican presidents lead to power for the Democrats. No Bush second term, we would be in far better shape today.

Bush enabled Obama to do the car bailouts and even have the ability to blame Republicans for it. Enabled the cash for perfectly good vehicles boondogle. Enabled the political destruction of car dealerships. Enabled the just shy of a trillion dollars is an ok number for new legislation, which enabled the $800 B in supposed stimulus. It also enabled the ability of the Democrats to push for health care reform, the new sub trillion dollar price tag was just barely enough for them fake in some numbers to be able to make it appear reasonable enough to themselves. Hey, it came in under a trillion, the new benchmark, SHIP IT!

Not a single one of those god forsaken activities would have been politically possible unless George W Bush paved the way and took the brundt of the blame.

Progressive liberal Republicanism is a bane, it needs to end. I will not support it, as it supports beyond any other thing, the progressive liberal democratic dreams.

astonerii on August 28, 2012 at 11:08 AM

Oh yeah, Bush also put into place the government structure to be handing out money to companies like solindra! What? We are just doing what Bush did as president!?!

astonerii on August 28, 2012 at 11:10 AM

‘Subconscious racism’ and ‘dog-whistle politics’ is the new-newspeak term for a thoughtcrime.

Thoughtcrime
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, thoughtcrime is the criminal act of holding unspoken beliefs or doubts that oppose or question the ruling party. In the book, the government attempts to control not only the speech and actions, but also the thoughts of its subjects.

Being critical of Obama or Democrats in any way is now a thoughtcrime. Do you think that there are too many people unemployed and on food stamps? Thoughtcrime! Do you think that someone should have to show I.D. In order to vote? Thoughtcrime!

This from the guy who called the Tea Party RACIST from the start.

TroubledMonkey on August 28, 2012 at 11:51 AM

Chris Matthews has been spewing this garbage for years…he thinks any, any at all, criticism against Obama is racist…and of course he misses the irony, that thinking that African-American’s are the downtrodden and has to be protected by the “white man”, is his lot in life.
Yes, he is the kind of “owner” that would serve the slaves tea and allow them to eat in his house once a month, he would give the slave the day off on his birthday, and he would celebrate the birth of a new baby (more to work the farm later on)…he would be the best slave owner in America because he cares about “those people”.

right2bright on August 28, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Talk about a war on women …..

Obama is referred to as ‘black’ or ‘African-American’. Why does the left choose to de-emphasize the mother and instead emphasize the father.

If the left truly wanted to illustrate their lack of a war on women, they would emphasize his mother and call Obama ‘white’.

Carnac on August 28, 2012 at 11:55 AM

To add: I wish Newt had looked around and said “I don’t see any African-American’s working for you”, there are fewer African American’s on your network than most any other network. You talk a big game, but you don’t walk the talk.”

right2bright on August 28, 2012 at 11:56 AM

To add to add: And the only African-American journalist at MSNBC, Al Sharpton, called Biden out for being a racist, no Mitt, BTW…

right2bright on August 28, 2012 at 11:57 AM

It is usually those that yell ‘racism’ the loudest that are the real racists. What does it say when we elect the first black (emphasizing his father and not his mother) president and then yell “racist” at the first hint of any disagreement with policy or performance.

We’ll never get past racism until those that yell racism stop doing so and hold people accountable for themselves and not the color of their skin.

So yes, Newt is right. Matthew’s IS THE RACIST.

Carnac on August 28, 2012 at 12:00 PM

I think whites should file suit against the federal government for disparate impact since as a percentage of the population, they’re under represented versus African-Americans when it comes to food stamps.

BradTank on August 28, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Actually when Matthews comes on like that the guest just needs to reach across the table and smack him along side of his head which houses a mentally impaired mind to attempt to bring him back to reality. As it has so often been said, liberalism is an acute mental disorder and Chris is in stage 5 (no hope for remission).

Newt handled himself well, by pointing out that there have been more food-stamp recipients under Obama (most of them white) than under any other President.

How does Matthews get away with calling Gingrich’s smile “diabolical”–would he say that about the smile of a Democrat, or a Hispanic or black guest?

Obama himself is contributing to the idea that food-stamp recipients are black–the Administration is running ads where one black woman encourages another to apply for food stamps for better nutrition! Now Matthews is trying to blame this stereotype on white Republicans, who have nothing to do with the Administration’s ads!

Steve Z on August 28, 2012 at 1:13 PM

Refusing to confront openly vile, race-baiting jerks like Matthews has been a tactical mistake that Republicans have made for years and years. Good for Newt for getting right in his face and calling him out for it.

Getting right in Chris’s face and then actually turning it around and calling him the racist, is exactly what little Mr. Furrowing feeling in his leg had coming to him. Everyone with the opportunity should do the same to him.

Newt did exactly what many of us have wanted to see for years.

If there’s any benefit to the big O being president, it’s that these epithets of racism that used to send the right into fits of cowardice are no longer working.
