Busted: “Republican” woman in Obama ad has been a registered Democrat since 2006; Update: Another?

posted at 1:01 pm on August 25, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Via Drudge, the inevitable finish for an ad for a President whose track record on vetting and research has been all too vividly featured in our Obamateurism series.  Earlier this week, Team Obama stepped up its War On Wimminses strategy with this ad, featuring women who identify as Republican but  who intend to vote for Barack Obama in 2012.  However, as the old Sesame Street song used to go, at least one of these women are not like the other:

Maria Ciano who is featured in the web video has been a registered Democrat since October 2006 according to voter registration records.

“People like me and my family have realized that the Republican Party once was inline with our views, but are no longer,” the Colorado resident says in the video.

It’s certainly possible that Ms. Ciano had at one time been Republican.  Her conversion to Democrat had nothing to do with Mitt Romney, or even Barack Obama, however.  And it’s difficult to ascertain exactly what about Romney would have driven the rest of them off, either.  One woman cites Romney’s desire to see Roe overturned, as if she’s never heard that argument in the four decades that Republicans have been making it.  George W. Bush made it just as much of an issue when running for President, if not more; every Republican nominee for President since Reagan has taken that position, as have most of the candidates who failed to get the nomination.  This must be one of the most low-information groups of voters ever featured in a national campaign.

It’s easy to understand why Team Obama wants to run a Republican Women for Obama ad.  Is it too much to ask that they check first to see if the women are actually Republican first?

Update: John Hinderaker delves a little deeper:

Her Facebook page is here; some of her friends congratulate her on appearing in the Obama ad. In addition to the fact that she is a registered Democrat, check out her Facebook “likes.” They make it obvious that Ms. Ciano is a devoted Democrat and a left-wing activist. Here are some of her “likes,” beginning with the earliest in time:

* Democracy For America
* Tar Sands Action
* Amy Goodman
* Barack Obama
* Costoftaxcuts.com
* Being Liberal
* MoveOn.org
* Bernie Sanders Tells You A Secret the GOP Would Rather You Didn’t Know
* Miss Piggy Delivers the Best Takedown of Fox News We’ve Seen All Month
* Think Progress
* The Best Quote From Barack Obama We’ve Seen This Week
* Dow and Monsanto Join Forces to Poison America’s Heartland
* Climate Reality
* Grist.org
* The Amazing Victory Scored With Obama That More People Should Be Talking About
* The Sierra Club
* The Buffett Rule
* Obama For America–Colorado
* UniteWomen.org
* Denver Young Democrats
* Obamacare
* Latinos For Obama
* Michelle Obama
* Veterans For Obama
* I Love It When I Wake Up In the Morning and Obama Is President
* Obama Truth Team
* Democratic Party

Yeah, I know a lot of Republicans who like to join MoveOn, Think Progress, and Climate Reality (and who listen to avowed socialist Bernie Sanders).  Seriously — did Team Obama think that no one would look at Ciano’s Facebook page?

Update II: At the same link, John says another of the women — Ms. Ciano’s mother — appears to be an unlikely Republican. He’s working on checking out the rest oon Facebook.

You go out ask your friends, uh cronies if they want to make some cash by being in a video to crush Romney. What else do you need to check on? Facts? Details? Look the narrative is true, certainly within the small circle of friends – uh cronies that they know. Truth is always optional with these people.

odannyboy on August 25, 2012 at 1:07 PM

Heh…makes one wonder immediately just how many of the OTHER women in the ad are actually Republicans?

Highlar on August 25, 2012 at 1:07 PM

I expect Sandra Fluke to be the next GOP women who has seen the light!

rob verdi on August 25, 2012 at 1:08 PM

LOL.

If there were any Republican women who actually planned to vote for Obama because of this “GOP War on Women” nonsense, it would be my girlfriends in northern Virginia who are pro-choice and sort of anti-social-con. None of them are falling for this crap. They care about their retirement, the federal debt, gas and food prices skyrocketing, and their college kids being able to find jobs when they graduate. They like Romney better than any Republican since Reagan.

So these ads are a big waste of money by Team Obama. I guess they are good for the base and for the media to discuss, but they are not going to win any votes.

Figures. It did seem improbably, but possibly plausible, that these were Republicans. Bad for them, but the message they present is bad for us on balance. So imo keep the hush on it cuz we don’t want to give them extra free air play. Really, it doesn’t matter that these weren’t real Repubs, what matters is the message (abortion etc)…

People like me(a Democrat) and my family have realized that the Republican Party once was inline with our views, but are no longer

This means the Republican Party is making progress, getting back to the way it was meant to be and not being Democrat lite. This is actually a pro-Romney, pro-Republican ad.

John the Libertarian on August 25, 2012 at 1:13 PM

Now if we want to be like the Dems – someone needs to put this woman’s name & personal information out for everyone to see and publically redicule.

Hasn’t she made herself a “public figure” and as such has relinquished any expectation of privacy.

katiejane on August 25, 2012 at 1:16 PM

Let’s see… this assumes there’s a contingent of Republicans who find Romney too conservative for their taste that did not feel that way about previous Republican candidates. No… just not buying it. Romney might not be the most conservative viable candidate, but he has to be close to the most moderate viable candidate for a Republican primary.

I know he’s been buffing up his conservative cred lately, and doing so after you’ve locked the nomination is a good sign, but he sure hasn’t gone all legitimate rape on us or signed up for the social conservative book of the month club, although I’m sure he’s pretty socially conservative in his personal beliefs. I think Romney’s real interest is in fixing the broken economy and being remembered with Reagan-like fondness. The only way to be really offended by that is if you’re bitterly clinging to the gubmint teat, and if that’s the case, you haven’t been punching the R ticket any time recently.

Look, I know we aren’t surprised, but I think one of the liberal commentators from the Romney birth certificate joke video actually expresses the truth in this Obama commercial. He basically said that when things aren’t going your way and you’re down you revert to who you actually are and do the things that are in your nature to do. Now he was trying to say that about Romney and his joke, but the reality is this is a prime example of what he was talking about.

Obama’s internal poll numbers must be horrible to have to come out with ads like this one using people who are willing to lie for him, but that’s the thing that’s who they are.

I think they can see a future where the democrats are marginalized like the GOP was at the beginning of Obama’s term and that frightens them to the core. And frankly that makes me hope for the future.

Cindy Munford on August 25, 2012 at 1:37 PM

Seriously — did Team Obama think that no one would look at Ciano’s Facebook page?

It really doesn’t matter either way…the Left/Democrats have hit rock-bottom and all they can do is talk trash about Republicans, even if it’s not true. This is not about educating voters, it’s about preaching to the choir and doing everything possible to make sure these liberals get themselves to the polling place and vote.

Democrats can’t laud all the great things Obama has done in the last four years, if anything he’s only made it worse. So to take their voters’ mind’s off of that, they’ll drag out any story or proposed or active legislation that they say is the GOP’s fault (which is nothing new for them) and how much Republicans hate women, minorities, gays, and grandma and only care about some bigwig CEO’s of multinational corporations.

Truth and facts be damned.

Historically, what this leads to isn’t pretty. I’m just saying this isn’t new. None of it is.

It’s one thing when you call it out and people listen..

It’s another when you call it out to deaf ears.

Nobody will know this except us. Just like barkys twitter account followers, it’s in a vacuum. Truth means nothing.

I know people don’t wan’t to hear it, but from my understanding of history we have a serious problem. Groups of progressives, or whatever you want to call them are linking up.

This isn’t about one election. It’s a war of ideology coming to some sort of final conflict. It’s not even contained within our border. It’s almost global.

Those that think little sideline stories like this aren’t part of a mosaic are grossly ignorant of history.

We are in DEEP scat. Look around.

I think Limbaugh just might have figured this out, the Democrats and Obama are going for the moron vote.

Think Progress, Bernie Sanders, MoveOn. . . She’s not only a Democrat, she’s a Marxist.

Is it just me or does it just seem like everything the democraps try to do they have to lie about it somehow?

When you are challenged by your own mind and other people’s arguments, you have to provide a rational basis for your rational conclusions, even when you are actually starting with the conclusion and working backward, which is what progressives do, having been told which opinions are cool and which are not. And the more inaccurate your conclusions are, the more plausible-but-false arguments you are required to employ, plausibility providing the rational component you are looking for, and falseness being a precondition of the arguments’ existence. And since progressives have an entire morality that does not accurately describe the world in any way, shape or form —

Yes. :)

And all the time.

Seriously — did Team Obama think that no one would look at Ciano’s Facebook page?

Better question:

Couldn’t they 4 (four) republican women who intend to vote for Obama?

Just 4?

BobMbx on August 25, 2012 at 2:03 PM

If she were my friend, I would have to call her out on that blatant lie. Funny how none of hers on her facebook page have done so.

tdpwells on August 25, 2012 at 2:05 PM

Anderson Cooper: this is a flat out lie.

DWS: it doesn’t matter.

Epic face palm. From the looks of her “likes” she isn’t just a democrat,mshe is a radical leftist.

Do you think that this is the reason that dems side with muslims. As a muslim you can lie to an infidel to persuade them……

crosshugger on August 25, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Liberals lied? NOOOOOOOOO… Actually…find a liberal that’s telling the truth….Now THAT would be news!

Liberalism IS a lie… they have to re-define everything.

Liberal Churches are just as bad… check out The Liberal Church of the Intolerant Heart – and Zombies from the new conservative show Intellectual Frog Legs. Good stuff

Romney: “Mr. President, Take Your Campaign Out of the Gutter”
…and also stop the lies, misrepresentations, half-truths and slime – who do you think you are, the socialist media?
