First day of RNC cancelled due to weather. Update: Storm moving West.

posted at 7:32 pm on August 25, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

We just received word that Monday’s slate of events for the RNC in Tampa will be postponed .

Republicans announced Saturday that they had effectively canceled the first day of its convention for safety concerns associated with an impending hurricane.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement that “the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th.”

That move essentially postpones the activities of the first of four scheduled days of the convention. But Priebus said in a conference call with reporters that the details of the revised schedule were not yet settled, and could be announced as soon as Sunday.due to the approaching storm. The convention will be gavelled in and out, with the schedule being shifted to the remaining three days.

We’re still working on contingency plans and checking the flight schedules. The RNC held a conference call for us a short time ago in which they stressed the fact that as much of the full slate of speakers as can be managed will still take the stage. As the details come out, we’ll try to keep you updated here. In the meantime I’ll be watching the airline web site. We’re still going to get this done, but Mother Nature may throw a few glitches into the schedule.

Update: (Jazz) As of Sunday morning, the National Hurricane center has continued to move the projected path of Isaac to the West, as this updated graphic demonstrates.

Hurricane Isaac 2

Of course, as they stress in their update, just because the projected path of the storm is no longer covering Tampa, that’s just the actual hurricane and tropical storm boundaries. Clouds, thunderstorms and gusting winds can extend considerably further outward. Also, these are still just projections. We’ve gotten pretty good at forecasting these events, but conditions could still change. With that in mind, the RNC was still probably wise to err on the side of caution and give the storm an extra day to make sure everyone’s safety is assured.

What will this mean for air travel today and tomorrow? Stay tuned.

Interesting to see what the networks make of this. After all, how may reruns can they trot out before the Democratic base starts to get curious and want to know what the RNC is all about?

thatsafactjack on August 25, 2012 at 7:37 PM

They are being played and hyped by the weather channel; and likely blackmail from the MSM promising non-stop stories about “insensitivity” etc etc

So what happens if the storm drifts into the Gulf and stays there?

Overreacting IMHO

At least Huckabee is scrapped for Monday night and hopefully not re-scheduled.

Hug-A-Bee is saying in a conference call to his supporters the storm is showing God’s displeasure at the GOP for nominating a Mormon, as well as disrespecting a fine Christian like Akin.

bayview on August 25, 2012 at 7:39 PM

ok, what we have to ask ourselfs is why god is angry with republicans!
a) God does not like mormons
b) God does not like his prophet todd Akin to be attacked by the party establishment.
c) God likes rebubs, he just after Biden.

lets us pray and search in our hearts the right answer!

nathor on August 25, 2012 at 7:40 PM

I guess it’s just me, but all week I’ve been thinking,

It isn’t terribly smart to hold a huge political convention in south/west Florida at the peak of hurricane season.

cane_loader on August 25, 2012 at 7:40 PM

I’m actually glad for it. A shortened schedule will cut down on the kook time. The convention can hopefully stay focused on the task at hand, getting R&R a good intro to the voters and a nice jump in the polls.

This is the time that Mitt will stand level with PBHO. Up until now, the incumbent has had all of the advantages of his office. After next week people will see Mitt as a very likely POTUS himself and for the first really begin to draw comparisons about their prospective administrations.

MJBrutus on August 25, 2012 at 7:42 PM

If we want to go the “wrath of God” route of thinking, then, I’m thinking God is mad at ALL the politicians.

Cat. 4 at the Dem convention, coming up.

After all, didn’t a huge freak storm hit D.C. after 0bama did something particularly bad lately? Or was it right after the 0bamacare SCOTUS decision?

Speaking of Palin not speaking, why haven’t I seen here on HA the interview that Reince gave to Levin where he said that Palin was offered a speaking slot and she declined?

Texas Gal on August 25, 2012 at 7:51 PM

I heard that the RNC moved Ann Romney’s speech to Tues night so that could be an outmaneuvering of the Nets by having her speak during their Tues hour of coverage and forcing them to cover her speech. Also there may still be effects from Isaac that could affect North Carolina and there’s the possibility of a few more storms arriving by next weekend.

Depends on where you live. It was impressive to watch the flash floods pushing massive piles of 40-50 lb rocks into the streets, closing intersections and upturning entire sections of pavement.

Then again, I’m sure the hordes of SEIU thugs who run this place made the most of their overtime pay opportunity on the cleanup.

Flora Duh on August 25, 2012 at 8:39 PM

So, I saw “2016″ today, here are a few thoughts:

1.) If you’ve been paying attention there isn’t much new here. I took a family member who doesn’t pay close attention to politics but leans Dem, and afterwards she said she would either vote for the Republican or probably not vote at all. There wasn’t any new information (new to anyone here anyway), its just the media did such a poor job of covering Obama in 2008, that she had no idea about the basic story of Obama’s childhood (going to Indonesia for years, then Hawaii, etc.). She was truly shocked by all this stuff, and thought he was something of a phony after seeing the movie.

2.) Too much focus on Obama’s father. Yeah, yeah, I know, he did write a book about his father. But I’ve read the book, and I think it was less a revealing insight into Obama’s mindset, and read more like a Liz “Sh*tting Bull” Warren-esque re-telling/fictionalization of his life– kind of like liberal fan fiction. I wish D’Nesh D’Souza had been able to get more people talking about Obama or the people in his life, rather than about the absent biological father who admittedly only met him one time.

There is some good stuff about his mother’s radical history though, which I found far more damning than anything about Barack Sr.

3.) Lots of leading questions in interviews, without revealing much.

So yeah, its not a conservative Farenheit 9/11, but I wouldn’t say its a really good movie either. Frankly, if you already have an opinion on Obama and you already know about his background, I think you’ll spend most of the movie waiting for D’Nesh to get to the juicy stuff, but its just not there. Its more like a scatter plot of Obama’s family history, and the trend lines are clear, but there isn’t anything that will really just floor you. I think its definitely something that should be seen by low-information voters, but I wonder how much of the audience hadn’t already formed their opinion about O.

So yeah, I’d recommend seeing it, but I wouldn’t recommend paying $12 to see it. Unless you want to take an undecided friend who lives in a swing state or something.

Lawdawg86 on August 25, 2012 at 8:39 PM

That was pretty much today’s weather here in Tampa. Partly cloudy, breezy with occasionally heavy showers in the afternoon. Not really any different than a typical summer day. *shrugs*

According to our local meteorologists – who I would trust a million times before the weather channel idiots – tomorrow should be mostly cloudy and windy with scattered afternoon thundershowers especially as the evening progresses. Monday in Tampa is expected to be overcast and windy with heavy rain.

Yeah, my bad.

Because what’s really going to get people to vote for Romney is Jeb Bush and a bunch of also-rans trotting out boiler plate speeches, interrupted by old white guys applauding and standing every now and then, in a backpatting measure.

Really does the movement some good.

God forbid they try a different, unconventional approach. I mean, just because it’s called a “convention” doesn’t mean it has to be run like a meeting of the Loyal Order of the Water Buffaloes.

But hey, the convention is really all about the party. I don’t mean the GOP, I mean the “get hammered and hump” post-speech parties.

budfox on August 25, 2012 at 9:09 PM

lol I understand. My 17 yr old is bad enough if the power goes out.

Here along the gulf coast, people BBQ and ride out Cat 1 storms, but Florida ain’t Texas, and the media, including Fox, have been overhyping the severity of the storm.

madmonkphotog on August 25, 2012 at 9:48 PM

We here on the Gulf Coast of Florida are very much the same way. Tropical Storms and Cat 1′s are definitely times for BBQ! There can be power outages and flooding but that’s about it.

The media always overhype storms. It’s one reason why I now HATE the Weather Channel. When FL got hit by 4 hurricanes, they were next to useless. :P Overhyping the small ones and underestimating the big ones. I wouldn’t touch them with a ten meter cattle prod.

Not suprised, political parties are big poosies. It’s not even scheduled to impact much…maybe some waves, possible “surge”, of course wind and rain. Seriously it’s retarded.

When I think respect for politicians can’t get lower, they tape up their sack and lay in the fetal position. First of all, media will ignore them, next they’ll ignore it with a reason now, after that they will ignore it while they “track”, interview tards, and talk about how terrible the damage to a road sign that is now tilting…and of course HOW COME GOVERNMENT ISN’T DOING MORE WAHHHHHHMBULANCE!!

could atleast have a hurrican party
