What’s the biggest media-manufactured myth of 2012?

posted at 12:36 pm on August 24, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

Matthew Continetti, of the Free Beacon, does a thorough takedown of Jane Mayer’s latest piece in The New Yorker about big money and politics, in which she predictably casts Democrats as purse-lipped, conflicted participants just trying to play defense against selfish Republicans looking to game the system for their own ends. As is often the case with the media, Mayer entirely ignores the possibility that lobbying the federal government for more federal government, as liberal donors do, might be designed to return material gains to said liberals. Sometimes those gains are rather obvious, in fact, as in the case of taxpayer dollars going to Obama-connected green energy companies by the hundreds of millions. Continetti takes pains to introduce her to the generous portion of the news cycle she seems to have missed before writing this piece.

The myth: It’s the idea that liberal donors don’t ask for anything in return. It’s worth reading the whole thing.

Mayer seems to have gullibly accepted the administration’s self-serving explanation for the drop-off in support, a fairy-tale that flatters Obama’s sense of intellectual and moral superiority while making Democratic donors look like immature crybabies. The remarkable thing is that the donors do not seem to mind. Mayer’s article is stuffed with their anonymous complaints—the transparency these rich liberals claim to support does not appear to extend to journalism. They say Obama isn’t friendly, he never calls, he once refused to pose for photos at White House holiday parties, his staff is haughty, he does not hold enough dinners, he is “unusually self-contained,” etc., etc.

One realizes after a while however that the donor’s gripes are just as self-indulgent and self-flattering as the spin from team Obama. What binds the disparate threads of Mayer’s piece together is its assumption of good faith on the part of progressives and bad faith on the part of Republicans. This kindergarten-level reasoning is presented matter-of-factly, as though American politics at the highest level had all the subtlety of a Disney cartoon.

Liberal big money = purest form of democracy. Conservative big money = violation of spirit of democracy!

As Sonny Bunch and Jonah Goldberg found out in tweeting with noted rich-guy movie producer Judd Apatow, it can get confusing which rich people are allowed to throw their money into political causes.

Since 2008, Judd Apatow has donated $63,100 to the Obama Victory Fund, the DCCC, and Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. His wife, Leslie Mann-Apatow, has given another $17,700 since 2010. In other words, between the two of them, they have donated more than $80,000 to Democrats—or 60 percent more than the United States median household income of $49,445. If you’re going to talk about the problem of big money influencing politics, you might want to have just a smidgen of self-awareness.

Big Money is evil…

….if you’re a Conservative Republican.

But Big Money is big hearted and generous, “profit for the right reason”……….

…..if you’re a Liberal Progressive.

Welcome to the Upside down States of America.

Obama is an intellectual genius of such epic proportions that he only sounds like a blithering idiot to people who have an IQ lower than his gargantuan one.

File that one in the “if it quacks like a duck” file. If he sounds like a blithering idiot, it’s probably because he’s a blithering idiot.

Biggest media manufactured myth?

I’m gonna hafta stand silent on this one – I haven’t a clue.

I don’t watch NBC, ABC or CBS news, and both CNN and MSNBC have been removed from my cable channels. Hell, I don’t watch Fox News much, either – if I wanted to watch a bunch of table-pounding, red-faced Commies, vomiting up their hatred for me – us – I’d watch the Commie news channels, supra – so when Fox News started parading Juan Williams and that pissant who looks kinda like Ed Schultz, I just quit watching it.

Sooooooooooooooo:

And Apatow’s “The Little Things” was pretty much an in-kind donation to Al Gore in 2000. It had three subplots, two of which were anti-Republican (and the third of which won it a GLAAD award). George Bush (the father) is the heavy in the episode; that’s how they could be anti-Bush in 2000 in the context of a show that took place in 1981….

calbear on August 24, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Jane Mayer is being willfully ignorant. She was around during the Clinton Mal-administration when the Clinton’s sold everything but the door knobs of the White House to the Communist Chinese for campaign cash.

Also can we remember that Billy Blythe Clinton sequestered huge clean coal reserves out west which made the Riady’s investment in coal in Asia soar in value?

Liberal big money = mixture of crony capitalism and (maybe) altruism; Conservative big money = mixture of crony capitalism and “leave me alone.” But I suspect that the crony capitalism $ is a higher percentage of the big money on the liberal side.

What’s the biggest media-manufactured myth of 2012?

That adherence to Constitutional principles means slavery for blacks, and serfdom for everyone else.

That lower taxes for everyone makes people poorer, except for the ‘rich’.

That any criticism of Obama’s policies is inherently racist.

That only ever-higher taxation, led by Democrats, can bring us prosperity.

That only Democrats can ‘fix’ the country.

That the country was totally broken in the first place, and needs Democrats to ‘make it right.’

That modern American liberals have nothing to do with the 19th Century idiocy called Marxism.

That Marxism, an idea that fails every time it is tried, can somehow work ‘better’ in America if only liberal Democrats can stop the Conservative Christians from ‘obstructing’.

That being pro-life is ‘war on women’.

And then some. I trust my point is clear.

In sum, the biggest manufactured myth is that liberalism somehow ‘works’ to the benefit of all. Or even that works in the first place, even in a commune.

In the fantasy world of the far left, one may only get rich making movies, television, music, or iphones.

Anybody who gets rich in any other way is an evil, greedy predator who got where they are on the backs of the poor, and must “give back” to the community, and/or be taxed into oblivion.

Some reactionary email source cited IRS stats which indicated that Nominee Mitt Romney still paid at a higher rate than 95% of the American people.

The abortion debate.

Arab Revolutions
Do-Nothing Congress

What’s the biggest media-manufactured myth of 2012?

The biggest media-manufactured myth is the Presidential campaign itself. Obama and Romney are both hiding from their past records and the media is making it easy for them to eat up the clock with distractions rather than the biggest national priorities, like balancing the budget and getting our fiscal house back in order and stopping the rapid advance of the police-state.

Only after the budget has been balanced am I interested in hearing how Republicans want to shift all of the spending from Democrat cronies back to Republican cronies. Until then, both sides should STFU about all the distractions and vague talking-points if they’re not going to balance the budget and get our house in order first.

I’m amused at how they hide his Black Panther hate for white people while never showing him with blacks. The background of people at rallies are always fawning whites, never the 99.9% racist blacks that blindly support him! Reparations are done quietly behind closed doors and absent Jessie, Al, Maxine,Jeremiah, Shelia, Van, et. al! He wouldn’t even be seen at the NAACP! There must have been some kind of deal struck for them to lay low and the Muslim will deliver the plunder taken from gullible and unsuspecting whites! Guess it is working!

Marco on August 24, 2012 at 4:21 PM

I’ve never figured out why a fixation on huge centralized power and mispent billions of dollars lends moral status to people. It even allows them to overlook other moral requirements. Maybe that’s why they do it, for the immoral license, they’re both entitled and superior.
