Romney on today’s joke: Lighten up, I’m not a Birther

posted at 8:43 pm on August 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

I hope he doesn’t actually believe that this defense will spare him any grief on the Sunday shows for what he said today. Of course it’s true that he’s not a Birther — Krauthammer made the same point in his defense on Fox News tonight — but that’s not the issue. In their calmer moments, when they’re not busy trying to psych up their base by insisting that Romney’s to the far right of Barry Goldwater, even partisan left-wing media types will acknowledge that he’s essentially a centrist technocrat who’s pandered to conservatives on select issues to win the nomination. And so that’s how they’ll treat this morning’s joke, not as evidence that Romney’s “gone Birther” but as him winking at Birthers because he needs their votes in November. How that makes sense, I’m not quite sure: The inevitable result of telling that joke was that he’ll be asked in his next dozen interviews to affirm his belief that Obama was born in Hawaii, which he’ll dutifully do, which in turn will be a thorn in the side of birth-certificate true believers. He’s better off avoiding this topic entirely and letting their antipathy to Obama push them into his column rather than engage the subject and put himself in a position where he’s forced to repudiate their big theory. But oh well.

Exit question: A friend suggested via e-mail that maybe Romney’s thought here was that it’s worth a weekend of Birther grief to knock Todd Akin off the front page. He’s distracting the media from a more damaging distraction, in other words, by letting them screech tediously about “dog whistles” for awhile instead of focusing on abortion politics. Anyone think that’s true? It’s hard for me to grasp since inevitably the Birther narrative will be combined with the Akin narrative to form a “Romney hates minorities and women” mega-narrative, but maybe I’m missing something.

The most enjoyable thing in politics is when a liberal feels offended.

Liam on August 25, 2012 at 4:12 AM

If the’re not being offended, we’re not getting the message out. They howl when they hear the truth about their devious and destructive souls. Double down Mitt!

Don L on August 25, 2012 at 5:07 AM

Far too many ill informed folks will vote for the incumbent because of the stature of the presidency.

To win their vote one must remove the stature from the person while leaving the office intact. Wit, sarcasm and a few, “Thar ya go agin Jimmys” will do the trick.

Double down Mitt!

Serendipity. I doubt it was intentional, but it looks like it worked anyway. The statement is so innocuous that reasonable people hear it, they are going to wonder what the fuss is.

Obama lied and claimed he was born in Kenya.

Jim Treacher on August 25, 2012 at 3:28 AM

Right, Øbama said he was born in Kenya before he was born in Hawaii… or something like that.

I agree, liberal outrage is usually feigned. They think they can bully us and shut us down with it.

The reason they think that is because it has worked so often in the past.

petefrt on August 25, 2012 at 7:47 AM

Once again, more liberal munchausen syndrome spewing from these desperate commies to need to save themselves. Again.

The context of Super Mitt’s ACTUAL WORDS were just as much a reference to he AND HIS WIFE being born in a particular hospital in Michigan. With actual OB’s.

Too bad ALL of the bama’s medical history surrounding his birth were lost in a fire, or sumpin. Along with all the baby pictures.

Tragic.

My take.

I haven’t kept up with all of the comments about this – apologies if I’m making a duplicate comment by someone.

I saw (groan) Peggy Noonan say on some Fox show the day before this joke happened that Romney SHOULD punch Obama – hard and often at things that get under his thin skin.

The next thing I see is this birth certificate comment and I thought it was brilliant because of the expected outrageous outrage that would follow – just didn’t expect it to be as much of a flap as it has turned out to be.

The fallout really shows – again – how thin skinned and hyperhypocritcal he and his lapdogs are.

I love it.

It was fun yesterday, watching all the Liberal heads exploding, sitting here bitterly clinging to my gun and Bible.

I hope Mitt talks about his college transcripts, next.

kingsjester on August 25, 2012 at 8:33 AM

Me too.

petefrt on August 25, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Maybe Mitt’s NEXT joke will be about how his and Ann’s Social Security numbers actually MATCH the state “area number” in which they were born, Michigan.

A little googling about Social Security numbers reveals:

1. The first three digits are known as the “area number”. Until June 25, 2011, this is generally the State or territory where your SSN was assigned. Thereafter, the number was randomly assigned.

Obama’s SS number has an ” area code” from Connecticut. Shouldn’t the first three digits be from the Hawaii “area number.”???

Obama has little or no sense of humor. Narcissists rarely do. It’s clinical. In fact, the observation extends to almost every liberal. Ideology leaves no room for levity.

I thought Romney was making fun of the Birthers, not Obama.

Oh well.

BigGator5 on August 25, 2012 at 9:44 AM

And Team Obama comes out with an instant-ad on it!

Talk about results.

Good-natured needling is beyond what they can take… imagine if Romney actually has a humorous streak and decides to let it go… getting laughed at, even snickered at, is beyond the pale for the Left and, thusly, they show themselves to be a joke and thin-skinned to boot. Not a winning combo, not at all.

ajacksonian on August 25, 2012 at 9:58 AM

HE’s better off looking them square in the eye when they ask this question – or Akin questions, or dog-on-the-car questions, or Mormon questions, or…

… and replying, ” are you f@#$ing serious? *that* is what you want to ask me about? Not about unemployment, inflation, economic tailspin, Medicare bankruptcy, over-regulation strangling the economy, energy costs, etc? Because *that’s* what the American people want you to ask me about. But no, *this* is what’s most important to you? Next question, and make it a good one, or maybe the next journalist is more in tune with reality and I should simply move on to *their* interview…”

Romney didn’t make a gaffe here, that line was planned. I’m entirely sure what their logic on using that line is, but it was definitely intentional.

Lawdawg86 on August 24, 2012 at 9:04 PM

I think so too. Obviously part of his prepared remarks.

cheetah2 on August 25, 2012 at 11:35 AM

I really do like to think that this was a brilliant move by Romney. The media seem to be focused on this and not the Akin debacle so I like to believe that this was Romney’s intent.

What I want Romney to say is ‘why weren’t you so concerned with Hilary’s shout out to secret Muslim whispers during the primaries?’ And, if such ‘othering’ of Obama is racist, why did he make her SofS?

Remember that Hilary was asked if Obama was a Muslim and Hilary said, “Obama Not Muslim “As Far As I Know

That’s a wink wink if ever there was one.

kit9 on August 25, 2012 at 2:41 PM

Hey Lefties – Every time you get your panties in a bunch about this “birther” stuff, it makes the rest of us start to wonder. I found the best way to make someone look ridiculous about something they’ve said that’s not true is to laugh at them and move on. Just sayin’.
