Obama spokesman: That Romney birth certificate joke is “gutterball politics”

posted at 4:17 pm on August 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

In case you’re wondering what it takes to offend a campaign whose allies have accused Romney of tax evasion based on anonymous “sources” and blamed him for leaving a steelworker’s wife to die from cancer uninsured, here you go. Turns out Obama, whose major contribution to deficit reduction this past year was the fiscal joke known as the “Buffett Rule,” is running a serious, substantive campaign while Romney, who just took up the sword of entitlement reform by picking Paul Ryan, is all about smears and distractions. The things you learn on MSNBC.

Two points. One: I don’t get why Romney would step on his own message to make a birth certificate joke. He’s spent the past week neck-deep in culture-war quicksand thanks to Todd Akin and is looking at another week of it once the Democratic convention opens. He could have used today to talk about unemployment or his energy policy or whatever, but instead he chose to throw the press some chum with this. (One of his aides told BuzzFeed that the line wasn’t in Romney’s prepared remarks but was delivered off-the-cuff. I’ll bet.) The point, I guess, is to prove that he’s capable of being politically incorrect by tweaking the media on a subject that makes them hyperventilate like almost nothing else, but anyone who cares much about that was voting for him already. It’s hard enough for Romney to break through the media’s wall of nonsense to reach voters. Why hand them another brick?

Two: This is the perfect ending to a week marked by criticism from Jake Tapper and, more tepidly, Chuck Todd that the media isn’t doing its job. From the moment this sentence escaped Romney’s lips, it was a metaphysical certainty that it would dominate political coverage for the rest of the day, with MSNBC’s pants-wetting expected to last well into the evening. No one expected otherwise even though everyone understands that few votes, if any, will shift because of this. When I started reading blogs years ago, it was relatively rare for reporters to admit that the media is biased or prone to trivial treatment of momentous events; whenever a reporter or editor actually ‘fessed up — the example that sticks in my mind was Daniel Okrent acknowledging the patently obvious fact that the NYT is a liberal newspaper — it was big news, a moral victory for conservatives who demanded that the press own up to its prejudices. These days, my sense is that they’re more willing to own up (they have to be since there are so many more critics online cataloging them) but that they’ve started to use their candor almost as an excuse to be as trivial as they want. Sure, they’ll spend three days navel-gazing about Romney’s dumb joke, but as long as Todd or Bob Schieffer or some other big name TV journalist sighs afterward and admits that it’s silly to spend three days on this, well, then that’s proof that they have “integrity” after all. Three cheers for progress.

Two clips for you here, one of Obama’s flack checking the various talking-point boxes and the other, via the Examiner, of MSNBC being very MSNBC-ish.

I can hear Axe now on Meet the Press- While President Obama is working hard to get Americans back to work, Mitt is spending his time investigating whether the president was born in the United States.

Way to lure those independents in Mitt

HotAirLib on August 24, 2012 at 4:28 PM

Well, everyone knows President Obama has failed to get Americans back to work — the numbers speak for themselves, sadly.

I really don’t think Obama wants Americans to go back to work. I think he is content with us being dependent on food stamps than being self-sufficient and the masters of our own destiny.

Besides, why would Obama care if Americans are doing well if he doesn’t identify with us Americans to begin with?

Punchenko on August 24, 2012 at 4:40 PM

Heard this on the top of the hour news. I laughed out loud. I laughed even harder when I heard the Obama camp bitch and moan about it saying it showed that the Romney campaign was in “disarray.”..

Talk about timing!

Its almost like the MFM won’t know which meme to pursue, will try to do both, find out that one comes to nothing and by attempting to connect them they will short-circuit their smears.

Why, that’s almost magical!

Because you know the MFM will try to connect them, will flail about trying to figure out how, then will find out that one meme goes nowhere and the other, which they’ve connected to a nothing meme, has gotten reduced in stature.

Maybe that Charlie-Foxtrot in MO can serve a purpose after all… has anyone stepped forward to be a write-in, yet? Wouldn’t that be a fun meme to pop up over the weekend?

ajacksonian on August 24, 2012 at 4:42 PM

My favorite part about the “adult” campaign of Obama is how they attributed the worst conceivable motives to Romney immediately after his remarks–because, you know, that’s how adults behave.

karlant on August 24, 2012 at 4:42 PM

That wasn’t a “gaffe”, he meant to say it.

Neither was “bitterly clinging to their guns and Bibles”.

kingsjester on August 24, 2012 at 4:28 PM

A few days ago in western PA, Paul Ryan said he was “a deer-hunting Catholic” who proudly clings to his gun and his religion.

People in the swing states LIKE this stuff! If the Obama campaign goes ballistic about this, it only shows voters that the Ego-bama is thin-skinned and on the defensive, and afraid of even mild criticism, and will make him less “likeable” to the voters.

Steve Z on August 24, 2012 at 4:42 PM

And he just killed the Akin stories with one off the cuff remark.

Amazing!

Who knew that Mitt Romney actually knew how to play the media enough to shunt them into a dead-end topic for a weekend?

ajacksonian on August 24, 2012 at 4:29 PM

I wondered about that myself. I’m not convinced, but it would be a great way to take the heat off, knowing 1) the MSM couldn’t possibly resist going after it, and 2) the actual remark is so tame that it wouldn’t put off voters even with wall-to-wall MSM hand-wringing.

Ordinarily you’d be correct. But Achin’ is holding a press conference in 45 minutes and rumor has it he’s going to announce(yet again) that he’s staying in the race. So much for keeping that assclown out of the news. I swear with each passing day this guy seems like a Democrat plant.

The feeding frenzy over this makes the media look terrified because every one of them believes there is something barack is hiding — something very damaging — so they they have to rush in and protect him every time something having to do with his sealed records comes up. How dreadful it must be for them to know, to deeply and thoroughly know, that their preferred candidate is a fraud, is hiding something very damaging, and to know that they have to stick their fingers in the dyke over and over again until election day to keep voters from finding out. How exhausting it must be.

Doughboy on August 24, 2012 at 4:52 PM

I don’t get why Romney would step on his own message to make a birth certificate joke.

The last thing Romney wants to talk about is what he’s going to do if he wins, because everybody would see that it’s basically the same thing that Obama has been doing, and Bush before him. He’s going to spend a lot of money and try to favor Republican cronies as much as possible to the detriment of Democrat cronies. The Republican Party is basically saying that the Bush Dynasty is fantastic and we’re going to go back to the way things were before Obama—back when Bush and the GOP and the Democrats, too, created all the moral hazards that are destroying America from within.

They tried to redirect your attention to Syria and failed, and now they’re trying to drum up war with Iran, when Pakistan our biggest problem. Don’t fall for it.

In order for America to win, the cronies have to lose.

I can hardly wait to hear what dws has to allow on this on the Sunday talk shows? She has such a way with words, all lies it seems!

How come he never has a meaningful lead outside of the fox and ras polls? How come there is no poll showing him with more electoral votes than Obama? There are multiple maps showing Obama with a substantial lead and some even show him over 270.

HotAirLib on August 24, 2012 at 4:43 PM

I think that works. You need to go with that. Dang, Obama doesn’t really need to campaign then does he? In fact he need to go to every state with a Senate seat up for election and campaign with the Democrat up for election, yes that will work.

whbates on August 24, 2012 at 4:56 PM

tingles should be HIGHLARIOUS today….

spittle flying everywhere

cmsinaz on August 24, 2012 at 4:51 PM

Well, as long as SPITTLE is the only bodily fluid flying – then yes, it will be hilarious – I think we can expect a total meltdown!

Pork-Chop on August 24, 2012 at 4:56 PM

I got banned from one for posing one question. One! Avalanche ensued. Mob, actually. It’s pretty hard to get banned from Hot Air. You have to be pretty relentlessly racist.

John the Libertarian on August 24, 2012 at 4:54 PM

I’ll give this to ‘em. The one thing that the Commies do right – is act like Commies.

OhEssYouCowboys on August 24, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Oh oh, it looks like the Dem convention is going to have to replace Sandra’s “condoms R us” speech with that of an aged Hawaiian pediatrician who will recall the day he was called from surfing the big wave to deliver Obama.

Don L on August 24, 2012 at 4:56 PM

As pissy as the libs are today you’d think the Messiah just lost the election over a joke. Hope the coroners are well stocked on body bags come Nov 7th.

antipc on August 24, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Maybe it’s a rope-a-dope by Romney directed at the MSM.

They start asking him about the birth certificate and he punches back about how unserious the MSM is about covering Obama and his pathetic record.

WisRich on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

I don’t know if it’s true but someone along the line said that they removed the BC items off their website today. Don’t know how to find out if that is true..

sandee on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

You want to bet that an overwhelming majority of Americans are laughing at your messiah today?

kingsjester on August 24, 2012 at 4:52 PM

If that is the case, how come the messiah is constantly leading in the polls?

HotAirLib on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

The last thing Romney or Obama want to talk about is what their two respective parties are secretly planning to shove down our throats after the lame duck regardless of who wins the election.

That’s why it doesn’t matter who wins, it never does. Not unless you change tracks and vote against the failed status quo can America excise the cronies and regain fiscal sanity. Once we balance the budget and sanity is restored then prosperity will just happen. We don’t need R central planning any more than D.

FloatingRock on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Two points. One … Why hand them another brick?

thank you allahpundit, this is what i said in the other thread. (actually i got distracted and forgot to go back to that thread lol) romney could have made a joke about something else but he chose to make a joke about something that gives the left ammunition for the “republicans are racist” meme. (liberals will claim that romney is a birther who thinks obama, as a black person, is a foreigner and foreigners don’t belong in america)

and yes, the media is biased. yes, liberals can get away with saying things that are worse. no, it’s not fair. that’s just how it is. conservatives need to watch what they say and not say things that are unnecessary for the point they’re trying to make, and give fuel to liberal memes.

Sachiko on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Avalanche ensued. Mob, actually. It’s pretty hard to get banned from Hot Air. You have to be pretty relentlessly racist.

Not to mention the verbal attacks one is subject to here are typically nowhere near the level of viciousness I’v witnessed on lib sites.

hawkeye54 on August 24, 2012 at 4:58 PM

That is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS considering how CNN yucked it up over using the term “teabagging” which they REVELED in. What a JOKE.

JustTruth101 on August 24, 2012 at 4:26 PM

True; Andy Vanderbilt took ‘teabagging’ from the homosexual underground and introduced it to the mainstream.

slickwillie2001 on August 24, 2012 at 4:58 PM

LOL okay, but calling Romney a felon is a-ok.

Oh, an incumbent president stuck in the mid 40% based on polls with Dem samples of +9.

From the transcript:

Dr. Big Kahuna – Yes, I delivered the man-god. What struck me as odd, though, was that a deity would have such big ears.

OhEssYouCowboys on August 24, 2012 at 4:59 PM

The desperate media is just clinging to anything to hang on to this race. Anyone else think we’ll be watching a split screen on Inauguration Day. Maybe not even split. We’ll get that little square in the corner of Romney taking the oath while they train a thousand cameras on the Obamas landing in Chicago and lugging their suitcases up the stairs.

HotAirLib on August 24, 2012 at 4:50 PM

My point exactly on the first. And as far as the second, do you really think that anyone is interested in the MSM trying to saddle Mitt with everything The Donald spits out. Don’t you think that would reek of desperation?

HoustonRight on August 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM

I just read a commenter on Althouse’s blog noting that he didn’t think much of the birther stuff until he learned that barack himself had promoted himself as having been born in Kenya via his official biography from his publisher for a dozen or so years. As this person rightly pointed out, as barack has at one time or another in his past been dishonest about his birthplace, he can hardly expect others to accept a single narrative as the truth.

A really good point, and probably why this stuff terrifies the barack campaign and the obamamedia — barack, himself, has personally engaged in deception on this issue. A lot of voters may not know that.

Lets face it, it’s gonna get even nastier from here. I seriously don’t think the public is looking at this as anything. I also think Romney did it on purpose. If we have to panic every time the media attacks Romney then we are not gonna last another 2 months…
