Obama spokesman: That Romney birth certificate joke is “gutterball politics”

posted at 4:17 pm on August 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

In case you’re wondering what it takes to offend a campaign whose allies have accused Romney of tax evasion based on anonymous “sources” and blamed him for leaving a steelworker’s wife to die from cancer uninsured, here you go. Turns out Obama, whose major contribution to deficit reduction this past year was the fiscal joke known as the “Buffett Rule,” is running a serious, substantive campaign while Romney, who just took up the sword of entitlement reform by picking Paul Ryan, is all about smears and distractions. The things you learn on MSNBC.

Two points. One: I don’t get why Romney would step on his own message to make a birth certificate joke. He’s spent the past week neck-deep in culture-war quicksand thanks to Todd Akin and is looking at another week of it once the Democratic convention opens. He could have used today to talk about unemployment or his energy policy or whatever, but instead he chose to throw the press some chum with this. (One of his aides told BuzzFeed that the line wasn’t in Romney’s prepared remarks but was delivered off-the-cuff. I’ll bet.) The point, I guess, is to prove that he’s capable of being politically incorrect by tweaking the media on a subject that makes them hyperventilate like almost nothing else, but anyone who cares much about that was voting for him already. It’s hard enough for Romney to break through the media’s wall of nonsense to reach voters. Why hand them another brick?

Two: This is the perfect ending to a week marked by criticism from Jake Tapper and, more tepidly, Chuck Todd that the media isn’t doing its job. From the moment this sentence escaped Romney’s lips, it was a metaphysical certainty that it would dominate political coverage for the rest of the day, with MSNBC’s pants-wetting expected to last well into the evening. No one expected otherwise even though everyone understands that few votes, if any, will shift because of this. When I started reading blogs years ago, it was relatively rare for reporters to admit that the media is biased or prone to trivial treatment of momentous events; whenever a reporter or editor actually ‘fessed up — the example that sticks in my mind was Daniel Okrent acknowledging the patently obvious fact that the NYT is a liberal newspaper — it was big news, a moral victory for conservatives who demanded that the press own up to its prejudices. These days, my sense is that they’re more willing to own up (they have to be since there are so many more critics online cataloging them) but that they’ve started to use their candor almost as an excuse to be as trivial as they want. Sure, they’ll spend three days navel-gazing about Romney’s dumb joke, but as long as Todd or Bob Schieffer or some other big name TV journalist sighs afterward and admits that it’s silly to spend three days on this, well, then that’s proof that they have “integrity” after all. Three cheers for progress.

Two clips for you here, one of Obama’s flack checking the various talking-point boxes and the other, via the Examiner, of MSNBC being very MSNBC-ish.

Camus

Oh the intellect of Governor Romney.

A French existentialist wrote a book entitled The Stranger.

Our president’s life is somewhat redolent of that book.

Alienated, lost and without anything touching him or his psyche.

He has produced no friends from his early years. High school and college are in a thick fog. His accounts are largely fiction. Reality is not important.

Imagine his chagrin at Governor Romney’s ability to identify a “home” where “everyone knew him”.

Not racism or chauvinism, our roots show who we were and are. Being disconnected enough, we kill Arabs for no reason.

I speak of both the book and a certain chilling list of the condemned that is carried about.

Chuck Todd? Chuck effing Todd?

Good grief, Allah…if you’re taking Chuck “head-first-neck-deep-up-Obama’s-ass” Todd seriously then you’re hopeless. He is one of the top five ass-clowns in political journalism.

Overreaction much??

The bigger joke here is the MSNBC panel’s buffoonish response.

SukieTawdry on August 24, 2012 at 5:12 PM

Exactly. The guy lets fly with a well-timed joke that immediately prompted his audience to have a good laugh.

It was a joke, a bon mot.

But suddenly, an Obama spokesperson, and these MSNBC clowns breathlessly hear in it the dog whistle of birtherism, and it’s hand-maiden racism!

Notice that they didn’t play the clip of him making that remark. The instant laughter would have killed their idiotic interpretation.

I think it was great that he said it. The American public will not hear what those MSNBC idiots heard. They’ll laugh at the one-liner. It was funny.

Whether it’s a one-off, or addressing a serious topic in a serious way, the more the real Mitt Romney is exposed unfiltered to the public, the more the public will disengage from these idiots in the lefty media whose sole purpose is to politically destroy him.

I completely disagree with AllahPundit’s hand-wringing analysis of this incident.

This is exactly the sort of moment that humanizes the guy in the public mind.

That was one of the fundamental elements in Reagan’s ability to “close the deal” on Jimmy Carter. Dems and their acolytes painted him for years as an “extremist.” But when the public witnessed his style and humor during that one-and-only debate in late October of 1980, it sealed the deal for him. He broke through the filter, ans won in a landslide.

But if even “well-meaning” critics try to force Romney into becoming some sort of serious-minded, policy-laden wonk, 24/7, it would absolutely kill his campaign.

And I am certain Mitt will not allow that to happen.

This was a great move, and reflective of the tone he should try to maintain in campaign appearances when the opportunity arises.

People don’t just vote for a man’s “positions.” They want to feel comfortable and relate to the character of the person.

He cracked a joke. People laughed. Democrats went ballistic.

Really, what more could you want?

Great shot by Romney and though he never mentioned Obaby by name, everyone knew what he was talking about. Ah yes, a bonding moment with our candidate and a shared experience of comedy. More of this, Mitt, and time to ignore the leftist crybabyturds.

Oh, and if you think Jake Tapper is any kind of ally against the slimestream media fuhgeddabaht it. I heard him on local Chicago radio this morning–wishy-washy. He didn’t call much of anybody out but just hid behind the cover of claiming that he had said all this in 2008. I don’t place much faith in anything he says.

And, who cares what the “media” says? They are going to do whatever they can to tear Romney down, joke or no joke. As for Tapper, he’ll be right in there with his hand on the scale just as in 2008.

The issue with Obama now is not whether he was born in the US or that he is going to lose big in Nov., but that he poses a flight risk. After the election, he may get out into the world to wreak further havoc in a position with the UN, World Bank, IMF, or some other global govt. agency. It may then become difficult to extradite him back to the US to face the consequences of his four year reign of terror.

Just like his “bless his heart” a few days ago, Romney is mocking Barky personally to get under his skin and to force him into an error. A Little dig here, a Little jab there, it’s Like gnats buzzing around Barky’s head.

The worst thing for pResident mom jeans is to be mocked. He will lash out. He will. And we all know the kind of verbal blunders an off teleprompter unscripted Obama is likely to spew forth.

Where to start? In the first interview the Obama Spokesperson could lie to her mother about when she was born and keep a straight. Never play poker with this one. So, Obama is running his campaign on substantive issues. ROFLMFAO Obama is not involved in gutter politics, Biden stating that Romney had not paid taxes for 10 years on the floor of Congress, and that he was possibly guilty of a felony based on something. The add claiming Romney kill a mans wife because Romney closed the business and so the guy lost his job and she died of cancer because they could not afford to pay for treatments. They failed to say that she was working and had insurance, or that Romney left Bain Capitol before the Company was sold. But she kept he composer and lied like a dead dog. MSNBC is a no brainer, a joke in his home town was racist because Romney is trying to appeal to the Far Right, who we all know is made up of women haters and racist.

Well, Allah, once again the mindless followers that are the Hot Air commenters, disagree with you. Actually, I love the fact that Mitt Romney was willing to do this because it’s really important to set the rules of the debate before it actually happens. We now know that jokes about dogs on top of cars are just jokes (at least that’s what Stephanie Cutter said) so you need to get a sense of humor but birth certificate jokes are not joke, are not funny, and should never be told. I’m still trying to figure out the distinction, but I’m sure our illustrious free press will corner DWS, Cutter, or Axelrod and have them explain it.

I suggest Romney doubles down and starts telling jokes about the fact Obama has his mother-in-law living in the White House and what kind of Beta Male gets elected President but still can’t even control his own scene.

Most Americans don’t even know that Michelle’s mom lives in the White House. And that fact more than anything illustrates how weak the dude is.

No one “knows” where Obama was born or who he, in reality, is — what people claim about him is based on belief: they “believe he was born in Hawaii” and similar statements of “belief” about his origins and substance.

Which is why Obama tries to “joke” about it himself and is so incredibly thin-skinned when the issue is raised by any except him and campaign, he knows he has proven nothing except how bamboozled he is about the mess of fraudulent docus he continues to push off on his “stupid followers” — just read how little the Left regards “most voters” for proof of how dumb they assume “most people” are. So Obama has been assuming his song-and-dancing will satiate the inquiries while they haven’t.

I can only express opinion about what I have experienced and that includes what I’ve seen and heard. Same goes for anyone else if their opinion is legitimate, to be taken seriously. Claiming one “believes” aspects about Obama that have not been proven isn’t reliable.

Romney’s hitting the sore spots and I hope he continues to do so. It’s why the spots are so sore, because Obama can’t defend them.

Lourdes on August 26, 2012 at 3:10 AM

If Obama didn’t want his credibility questioned, he certainly has had every opportunity to provide a life-history that is documented and by being documented, could be considered credible.

Instead, Obama’s gone to utterly absurd lengths to confuse, conflict and conceal who he is. The blame for the questions about who he is, including where he’s from, rests on Barack Obama. When they, he, ridicule others about this/these issues of Obama’s origin, qualifications, credibility, they’re doing so out of desperation.

Otherwise, why the extensive melodrama, just fork over the documents. Forgery and the high drama aren’t solutions, they’re causes.

Lourdes on August 26, 2012 at 3:14 AM

Maybe Mitt should have said something like Obama said about the injured military paying for their own care, after all they volunteered to fight. The hypocrisy of the left is astounding.

mixplix on August 26, 2012 at 2:39 PM

My sense is that AP thinks Romney should be campaigning to win over the MSM or at least not antagonize them. Bad plan. The MSM will seek to destroy Romney regardless of what he does to placate them. Romney is playing to the actual voters who matter, not the Obama-stenographers of the media. Mitt’s doing it right.

the ability of allah(asshat)pundit of the “eek it’s a mouse party” to continually talk and repeat the leftist lunacy for them is reaching a pinnacle. this is a landslide election coming up, and i’ll await both ed and allahusseinpundit to expound on their utter surprise at the election results.

The whole Obama presidency has been a “gutter ball” the way I see it. McCain’s people never went 100% to vet Obama in 2007 and 2008 and still has never offered any legit proof he is legal. Putting forth fake birth certificates, fake selective service card, and even using a dead person’s social security number is all the “proof” we need to call him a fraud. It will all come out soon and massive Federal charges will be coming for all involved in the conspiracy.
