Horror of horrors: Romney makes a birth-certificate joke

posted at 2:56 pm on August 24, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

And it was pretty darn funny, too.

“Now I love being home, in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”

Now, everybody just hold on for a second. The Twitterverse and etcetera have been lighting up with speculations and accusations from all sides as to what Mitt Romney meant with this. No, birthers: I have the severest doubts that Mitt Romney was endorsing birtherism, nor that he plans to desperately take up the theory as part of his campaign platform as we wend our way to November. It’s far too divisive an issue, and as much as the Left would no doubt like everyone to believe, it’s not like the majority of the conservative base is exactly jiggy with it.

And puh-lease, liberals: Spare us your outrageous outrage about how Mitt Romney would dare question President Obama’s birth place, because firstly, that wasn’t what he was doing. The point is that Mitt Romney has never tried to paint himself as anything other than a born-and-bred, robustly proud American, and nobody has ever questioned his belief in America as the greatest country on earth. President Obama, on the other hand, often favors a more citizen-of-the-world approach over a strictly American identity, and he’s taken some shots at American exceptionalism (and, there’s evidence that he’s at least tried to portray himself as a more worldly, exotic, cosmopolitan type of individual at some point in his life). I really think that’s all Mitt Romney was going for here. And secondly, Team Obama, don’t act like you wouldn’t welcome a birther-revival as the next big easily-ridiculed distraction-from-the-economy. His campaign sent out this missive after the event:

“Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It’s one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.”

But hey, they’re all about making it a big joke with their official Obama campaign merchandise:

There’s really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama’s birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it — and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke. Get your Obama birth certificate Made in the USA mug today.

Yes, exactly — it was a joke, merely meant to illustrate that Romney is all about America, all the time. That is all. Have we all really drunk so much of the Political-Correctness Kool-Aid that we can’t have a little laugh about the whole thing?

The Left asked for Bush Jr.’s.

sentinelrules on August 24, 2012 at 3:56 PM

And did they get to see them?

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 3:58 PM

Yes, they did. And they showed that Bush had slightly better college grades than the Idiot you guys ran against him in 2004.

By the way, the Democrats also enlisted their stenographers at the Associated Press to successfully sue the Bush White House to force him to release all of his military records. But then almost immediately after that, the very same al-AP engaged in an active conspiracy and coverup to keep that Democrat “opponent’s” complete military records a Secret. One al-AP “reporter”, along with a “reporter” from the LA Times and a “reporter” from Thurston’s own hometime NY Times-owned Boston Globe all happily participated in that conspiracy.

You must have been so proud of them all.

For most people college transcripts are a source of pride, since they reflect achievement of specific goals. Obviously your Hero O’bama is ashamed of his.

Del Dolemonte on August 24, 2012 at 4:05 PM

For most people attaining the office of President of the United States is a source of pride, since it reflects that the American people don’t vote for candidates based on their school grades.

Demand the President’s college transcripts all you want. He’s already been elected without them and he will win or lose this election without them.

Ok, back on “ignore” for you.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Romney is trying a little Alinsky on Obama.

ALINSKY RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)

The media won’t be able to decide whether they are outraged over the birther comments… or Akin.

hahahaha

Stay tuned. Pow. Zap. Zowie!!

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/245387-akin-to-hold-press-conference-this-afternoon

Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.) will hold a press conference somewhere in St. Louis County at 5:15 Eastern Standard time.

At first I thought he saw the light ( the oncoming freight train) and is announcing he is stepping aside aside. But, Nooooo….
He will announce he’s staying in the Missouri Senate race. Why does he need to call a press conference over this? We know he is a moron already.

sherry on August 24, 2012 at 4:14 PM

have we learned nothing from the akin mess? the lesson is: don’t give liberals ammunition for their false memes.

i know that liberals make up their own fake/exaggerated “evidence” that those memes are true. but that’s all the more reason to not go out of your way to purposely give them ammunition.

they constantly repeat the “republicans are racist” meme 24/7, and that whole birther thing plays right into the “racist” meme. so why in the world would romney want to feed into that?

i saw some people in the headline thread say “romney’s not a birther, everyone knows that.” really? where did you get the idea that “everyone knows that?” sure, all of us know, but now liberals will work their hardest to convince less-informed people that romney is a birther, he’s racist, he thinks black people are foreigners who don’t belong in america, etc etc.

romney shouldn’t have reminded anyone of the birther stuff. he could have made a joke about obama handling the economy badly or something but why bring up birth certificates?

Sachiko on August 24, 2012 at 4:05 PM

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Forgotten about in a few days, tops. The Left was already going that route (I’ve seen criticism of Romney’s speeches, suggesting that he’s making the case Obama was unAmerican, and there was also the article recently that suggested Paul Ryan was still a racist despite the black girlfriend), so they don’t need ammo to make ridiculous claims. Anyone who does buy into what they claim, though, likely wasn’t voting for Romney in the first place. It was a joke, and most will see it in that vein.

Is it because he is such an honorable individual that he would never Lie his arse off if he thought it would help Himself?

We all know that Dictocrats don’t have any sense of humor….but seriously, if Mr. Romney didn’t know this would cause a distraction, then I’m worried

Frankly, he has plenty of time to explain what everyone that’s reachable already knows; Obama destroyed the economy.

What he needs to do is to reach those masses of voters who care not about economic lessons, but do need to learn that he’s human and not the ogre theleft says that he is. Jokes are great. Gentle jokes are better, Obama uses cut his opponant up sarcasm–they’ll see the difference.

While yes, this is an appeal to good old fashioned patriotism, let’s not be in denial about it, Romney was stroking the birthers. Not that he agrees with them, but he certainly meets this “born in the USA” standard, while Obama (for whatever reason) remains suspect.

The line is funny in its boldness, challenging the incumbent’s patriotism, even his origin. Obama will not touch this stinking pile if indeed he is the smartest President evah. There are too many who are satisfied about his origin yet wonder about his patriotism.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Sure it could be damaging to his campaign once the Obama people got done lying about what is in there. And then Romney would have to spend days and weeks explaining why it is a lie.

Thus far they have accused him being felon, a tax cheat, a murderer…all without a shred of evidence..they had no proof, no truth. Nothing but lies and distortions. I can see it now..there would by the account that they would speculate was the result of a kiddie porn ring..or sex slaves being bought and sold in eastern Europe.

Personally, the Democrats gave up any right to demand that Romney release anything other than what the law requires. He will release any taxes he has to along with financial disclosure forms and if that is not good enough for the Democrats then screw em.

The American people are more worried about gas prices, rising food prices, jobs and the looming threat of Obamacare to give a rat’s behind about Romney’s tax returns.

What’s the matter, Chumpy? Choking on facts again?

northdallasthirty on August 24, 2012 at 4:57 PM

That’s not true. As I recall, Donald Trump got quite a bit of mileage out of nothing but birtherism a little over a year ago.

Doughboy on August 24, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Actually, it was the Donald threatening to send his personal investigators to Hawaii that finally made Obama release it. I’m not really a birther. It’s a lost cause at this point. Even if it’s proven absolutely that Obama lied, there’s no way that will undo anything and since the DoJ has already proven it’s more like the Gestapo than what we used to think of as Justice, I can assure you, Obama will go scott free.

Romney should laugh and offer to show his if the press wants—just assure them it won’t take four years and millions of dollars to get it.

Portia46 on August 24, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Demand the President’s college transcripts all you want.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 4:10 PM

PS, your Selective Leftist Hypocrisy certainly is delicious to observe.

In 1992, Bill and Hillary Clinton were marketed as “intelligents”; he was a Rhodes Scholar and she was the first student to deliver Wellesley College’s Commencement Address. Yest the Democrat Media was never curious about what Bill and Hill’s actual grades were. They did, however, help Hillary keep her Senior Thesis about Saul Alinsky a State Secret for many years.

In 2000, neither candidate was running on their academic records, but the Democrat Media was still curious enough to uncover them.

4 years later, Bush was not running on his military record, but his “opponent” was. The Democrat Media successfully sued Bush for his military records, but then engaged in an active conspiracy to keep the military records of his “opponent” under wraps.

And in 2008, O’bama was marketed as a Smart Guy. He was touted as the first Black President of the Harvard Law Review, and one of his professors there, Larry Tribe, claimed O’bama was “the smartest student I ever had”, just weeks after saying the exact same thing about a former female student of his. And yet the Democrat Media never exhibited the same curiosity about O’bama’s grades as they did about earlier candidates from both parties.

Yep, no Double Standard there!

WolvenOne on August 24, 2012 at 5:21 PM

Election day is drawing near. Swing voters are concerned about Obama’s handling of the economy, which is being pushed aside by the Obama campaign creating media’s distractions.

So to illustrate the point, Mitt creates a mini-distraction of his own, mocking Obama’s penchant for misdirection, and cracking a jumps into the birther pool joke which the audience loves. It immediately sends Obama and his cranked-up lib supporters into an apoplectic fit!

Sweet!

Good thinking, Mr. Electable. Mitt!

As they like to say at NASCAR events, “Ohhhhh . . . that hadda leave a mark! Heh.

I suppose the GOP will nominate Todd Akin in 2016.

Mr. Wednesday Night on August 24, 2012 at 3:30 PM

Nice try, Wednesday’s Child, but woe is you! There are few things more potent in American politics than proving the other guy and his supporters don’t have a sense of humor. Mitt just did a dance on Obama’s parade. You better hope that election comes “sooner than later.” If this keeps up, your guy will be looking up at a landslide!

Trochilus on August 24, 2012 at 5:21 PM

You know what cupcake it is time for the American people to grow the hell up. I don’t give a darn anymore who thinks they are entitled to what free ride. What about this “economy” do you not understand?

The ONLY way to get people prosperity again is to get people back to work, and unless Democrat science and engineering have finally transcended laws of thermodynamics, economics, and supply and demand the unicorn generators, windmills, and solar arrays ain’t gonna get the American people prosperity.

I’ll make that argument to ANYONE. The Gaia cult’s religion and the unholy alliance between big labor/ public employee unions/minorities/and the sierra club is stupid. The best path to equality is rewarding good behavior through economic opportunity and people working together at tasks genuine in utility for the community.

This Hopium based regressive “recovery” that is bragging about a foodstamp program that is heading for defense spending levels is INSANE. 800 billion dollars by late 2016 early 2017. THIS IS NOT THE HOPE ANY OF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR.

Put the epa down and back away and let America work.

and I will get that translated to spanish in a heartbeat.

In the last week Obama has made several dog on the roof jokes…and no one cared.

I don’t think the joke is harmless or harmful either one..it is a joke, if anything it makes Romney look more human to people. More real.

Will the media try to make something? Probably, but what is new? That is what they do with anything and everything. You are talking about people that make an issue of how much Ann Romney spent on a blouse.
