Horror of horrors: Romney makes a birth-certificate joke

posted at 2:56 pm on August 24, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

And it was pretty darn funny, too.

“Now I love being home, in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”

Now, everybody just hold on for a second. The Twitterverse and etcetera have been lighting up with speculations and accusations from all sides as to what Mitt Romney meant with this. No, birthers: I have the severest doubts that Mitt Romney was endorsing birtherism, nor that he plans to desperately take up the theory as part of his campaign platform as we wend our way to November. It’s far too divisive an issue, and as much as the Left would no doubt like everyone to believe, it’s not like the majority of the conservative base is exactly jiggy with it.

And puh-lease, liberals: Spare us your outrageous outrage about how Mitt Romney would dare question President Obama’s birth place, because firstly, that wasn’t what he was doing. The point is that Mitt Romney has never tried to paint himself as anything other than a born-and-bred, robustly proud American, and nobody has ever questioned his belief in America as the greatest country on earth. President Obama, on the other hand, often favors a more citizen-of-the-world approach over a strictly American identity, and he’s taken some shots at American exceptionalism (and, there’s evidence that he’s at least tried to portray himself as a more worldly, exotic, cosmopolitan type of individual at some point in his life). I really think that’s all Mitt Romney was going for here. And secondly, Team Obama, don’t act like you wouldn’t welcome a birther-revival as the next big easily-ridiculed distraction-from-the-economy. His campaign sent out this missive after the event:

“Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It’s one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.”

But hey, they’re all about making it a big joke with their official Obama campaign merchandise:

There’s really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama’s birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it — and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke. Get your Obama birth certificate Made in the USA mug today.

Yes, exactly — it was a joke, merely meant to illustrate that Romney is all about America, all the time. That is all. Have we all really drunk so much of the Political-Correctness Kool-Aid that we can’t have a little laugh about the whole thing?

Election day is drawing near. Swing voters are concerned about Obama’s handling of the economy, which is being pushed aside by the media’s distractions.

So Mitt jumps into the birther pool. Good thinking, Mr. Electable.

Mitt rarely does anything without a purpose. This could very well have meant to send the 90% liberal media into apoplexy, so that Romney could highlight the difference in treatment. We might well hear about the media not chastising Team Obama for their highly personal and negative attacks, such as accusing Romney of being a felon shortly.

Don L on August 24, 2012 at 3:34 PM

For the 1/2Cons
Here’s how it works. Any candidate the Rs put there, even if he’s well spoken, successful, pro amnesty, compassionate, believes in the power of big gov(Teddy style) and listens to rap and heavy metal, knows the latest dances…Any candidate the Rs put out there will be portrayed as a RW yahoo by the MSM. You can’t escape this FACT.

A consistent unifying conservative message overcomes the MSM. Bush’s compassionate conservatism was consistent(though dangerous) and unifying. Reagan’s 3 legged stool was consistent and unifying. Both bypassed the MSM and went straight to the people. If you don’t have a simple consistent ideology to sell to the people then you are whipped around by the news cycle and all these off hand comments become the de facto campaign platform.

Mitt should win because Obama is a disaster who has made many mistakes recently(GMarriage, build this, late term abort..) but this is a scattered, inconsistent campaign TeamRomney is running.

BoxHead1 on August 24, 2012 at 3:34 PM

Obama has been making dog jokes on the stump and no one in the media called him on it. One of the White House press corps (Tapper?) asked Carney if that was appropriate, and Carney responded that it was just a little humor.

So, tit for tat, Mr. President.

You are under the sadly mistaken impression that I care a toss about Bush’s college transcripts.
Didn’t care then; don’t care now.

I’m sure that a lifetime supply of birth control has far greater value to Sandra than speaking fees.

Anyone look at how many birther jokes Obama makes?

Grunt on August 24, 2012 at 4:04 PM

Romney: “Nobody’s asked me to see my college transcripts.”

sentinelrules on August 24, 2012 at 3:48 PM

Actually, that’s correct. And nobody, other than the same people who think he’s “exotic, cosmopolitan and not an American, have asked to see Obama’s.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 3:54 PM

Most presidents’ academic records are made public by the time they reach the highest office in the land, either with their consent or by someone else digging them up. The media dug up transcripts for Bush and Gore (in violation of federal law assuring the confidentiality of educational information), and the Obscenely Wealthy Gigolo Idiot you guys ran for President in 2004 voluntarily let the US Navy release his college transcripts after he lost.

For most people college transcripts are a source of pride, since they reflect achievement of specific goals. Obviously your Hero O’bama is ashamed of his.

MontanaMmmm on August 24, 2012 at 4:05 PM

am i missing something here? why are most of you completely fine with the fact that romney did this? (it was completely unnecessary, he went out of his way to make the joke.)

have we learned nothing from the akin mess? the lesson is: don’t give liberals ammunition for their false memes.

i know that liberals make up their own fake/exaggerated “evidence” that those memes are true. but that’s all the more reason to not go out of your way to purposely give them ammunition.

they constantly repeat the “republicans are racist” meme 24/7, and that whole birther thing plays right into the “racist” meme. so why in the world would romney want to feed into that?

i saw some people in the headline thread say “romney’s not a birther, everyone knows that.” really? where did you get the idea that “everyone knows that?” sure, all of us know, but now liberals will work their hardest to convince less-informed people that romney is a birther, he’s racist, he thinks black people are foreigners who don’t belong in america, etc etc.

romney shouldn’t have reminded anyone of the birther stuff. he could have made a joke about obama handling the economy badly or something but why bring up birth certificates?
