Horror of horrors: Romney makes a birth-certificate joke

posted at 2:56 pm on August 24, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

And it was pretty darn funny, too.

“Now I love being home, in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born in Henry Ford Hospital, I was born in Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”

Now, everybody just hold on for a second. The Twitterverse and etcetera have been lighting up with speculations and accusations from all sides as to what Mitt Romney meant with this. No, birthers: I have the severest doubts that Mitt Romney was endorsing birtherism, nor that he plans to desperately take up the theory as part of his campaign platform as we wend our way to November. It’s far too divisive an issue, and as much as the Left would no doubt like everyone to believe, it’s not like the majority of the conservative base is exactly jiggy with it.

And puh-lease, liberals: Spare us your outrageous outrage about how Mitt Romney would dare question President Obama’s birth place, because firstly, that wasn’t what he was doing. The point is that Mitt Romney has never tried to paint himself as anything other than a born-and-bred, robustly proud American, and nobody has ever questioned his belief in America as the greatest country on earth. President Obama, on the other hand, often favors a more citizen-of-the-world approach over a strictly American identity, and he’s taken some shots at American exceptionalism (and, there’s evidence that he’s at least tried to portray himself as a more worldly, exotic, cosmopolitan type of individual at some point in his life). I really think that’s all Mitt Romney was going for here. And secondly, Team Obama, don’t act like you wouldn’t welcome a birther-revival as the next big easily-ridiculed distraction-from-the-economy. His campaign sent out this missive after the event:

“Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them. It’s one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America.”

But hey, they’re all about making it a big joke with their official Obama campaign merchandise:

There’s really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama’s birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it — and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke. Get your Obama birth certificate Made in the USA mug today.

Yes, exactly — it was a joke, merely meant to illustrate that Romney is all about America, all the time. That is all. Have we all really drunk so much of the Political-Correctness Kool-Aid that we can’t have a little laugh about the whole thing?

I LOVE IT.

Team Romney know references like this get under Obama’s skin, and induces the Once to do/say something stupid.

Whaaa?? i’m a naturalized citizen and I don’t see what’s your faux outrage all about….I for one tought it was a funny snark…..and why sould minorities not find this funny or find it offensive…if they are naturalized (and btw, and only the naturalized ones can vote), they are not expected to have an US birth certificste anyways…so ghe joke really should not affect them in anyways, unless you are just prone to exaggerations and drama over nothing……..

some minorities might think: eh, that romney thinks that he looks white and has a normal name, so he wont be asked for a birth certificate.

From my perspective, it seems like the polls show that country is squarely concerned about the economy. After the convention next week, and the debates soon after, Romney will have plenty of time to make the case that the economy matters, and this will be forgotten.

Flavor of the day response from the Obama team. Tomorrow it will be something different, something like “Romney likes hates chocolate ice cream and prefers vanilla, therefore he must be racist.”

Like so many on the left, they don’t have any real arguments to stand on. Try and pin ‘em down, and they’ll move to another thread.

For most people attaining the office of President of the United States is a source of pride, since it reflects that the American people don’t vote for candidates based on their school grades.

Demand the President’s college transcripts all you want. He’s already been elected without them and he will win or lose this election without them.

Ok, back on “ignore” for you.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 4:10 PM

The *grades* don’t matter! Who cares? Why would someone go to all this trouble? To hide a B- or C+? To hide that he took some (many?) classes with known leftist profs? So what?

More likely, the transcripts are going to show him listed as a foreign exchange student.

bofh on August 24, 2012 at 5:58 PM

It’s not required, nor does the voting public care.

The release of tax returns is not required either, but when a candidate vehemently refuses to release all but two year and openly admits that he’s concerned that releasing further years could be damaging to his campaign, then the opposition will predictably make said returns an issue.

Oh, and the candidates own father released 12 years worth when he ran for President.

chumpThreads on August 24, 2012 at 4:21 PM

Perhaps also SAT scores from his Occidental to Columbia transfer docs? SAT scores would be interesting because they are not graded on an Affirmative Action basis, and we already know from Columbia that the average SAT for that transfer class was very low. That is because of a serious shortage of housing in NYC those years.

Now, however, you’ll be seen as grasping for “nutty” with this latest theory.

People with a decent sense of humor got it and they laughed. Lots of Dems, however, got all lathered up, and are still foaming at the mouth.

That adds significantly to the humor.

Racism is a factor but not in the way you think. Eisenhower was asked to produce his birth certificate. He did so without fanfare. Obama was granted a special status which placed him above the usual scrutiny. It’s hardly surprising that his presidency has been imperial and unconstrained by simple things like laws.

Basilsbest on August 24, 2012 at 6:28 PM

95& of African Americans voted for Obama in 2008.

The ONLY people this joke will impact are progressives. They’re the only one’s who are vested in thinking its anything more than a harmless joke. They’re the only one’s who have any reason to suddenly develop amnesia when it comes to the numerous times Obama has joked about the birth certificate and the only one’s inclined to say that ‘its different when he does it.’

I’ll share a secret with all of you.

Progressives weren’t going to vote for R&R anyway.

Less than 90 minutes after Romney made this joke, one of the lead “writers” (Andrew Rosenthal) at the NY Times flatly called it a Racist Remark. You know Andy, he got his cushy job there simply because his father was the NYT’s “Editor” for many years.

I was just surfing thru another forum that has a lot of Leftists. Some of their comments:

That is utter BS. The birther issue is racist.

There are more than a few people who refuse the notion of a black president and will clutch at the birther straw to validate their point.

This of course is total rubbish; people also went after McCain for being born in the Canal Zone. And it also ignores the Inconvenient Truth that O’bama is half White.

He is running against a guy overseeing 8% unemployment but he’s playing in the gutter with racists. So awesome.

(See above)

I visited Hawaii while in the service back in the 1960s. It did not look or feel like America. It is basically the Philippines.

I lived in Hawai’i in the 1960s. This poster has it right.

it’s because Obama is black.

A shovel for each hand might be better.

Mr Obama is only half black–which half is the incompetent half?

A+++++

But some voices of sanity

Is it racist? Well, let’s see if it matches the criteria for racism.

Was it said by a Republican? Yep. About a black Democrat? Yep.

So, 2 out of 2. Looks like it was racist.

Del Dolemonte on August 24, 2012 at 6:53 PM
