MN Democrat tests limits of well-known axiom on political death

posted at 9:21 am on August 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Most people in politics have at one time or another said about an apparently Teflon-coated politician that the only way he could lose would be to be caught with a live boy or a dead girl.  It’s a rather crude way to show respect for an opponent, but no one means it literally.  However, thanks to one pioneering state representative from Minnesota, we’re about to test at least one half of that formula:

A Minnesota state lawmaker who authorities say admitted having a liaison with a 17-year-old boy at a rest stop faced calls from party leaders on Monday to give up his re-election bid.

Rep. Kerry Gauthier, 56, hasn’t been charged in the July incident, and authorities said he wouldn’t be because the boy was older than 16, the legal age of consent, and no money was exchanged. Police say the teenager responded to the lawmaker’s Craigslist ad for “no strings attached” sex.

Gauthier admitted to the liaison, according to police reports made public late last week. The teen told police the two had oral sex, according to the reports.

Gauthier had been running for re-election to his district, a reliably Democratic seat in Duluth.  Democrats want him out, including his caucus leader and his party’s chair:

State Democratic leaders are increasing pressure on a DFL legislator not to seek re-election after authorities said he had a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy at a rest stop in Duluth.

“I am deeply disappointed with Rep. Kerry Gauthier’s conduct,” said House Minority Leader Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis. “The conduct was wrong and … I believe he should withdraw from the race for re-election.” …

Soon after Thissen’s comments on Monday, DFL Party Chair Ken Martin called the situation “deeply unfortunate” and asked Gauthier to drop out of the race.

“His actions are inexcusable,” Martin said. “The people of Duluth deserve a representative who will stand up for their interests, without the sort of distractions that Rep. Gauthier has caused through exceedingly poor judgment.”

Republicans want him out now, not at the end of the term:

House Speaker Kurt Zellers, a Republican, made a stronger call Friday, saying that Gauthier should resign during his current term in the wake of the public sex incident.

What happens from here?  The primary is over, and I’m not certain whether Minnesota has the same leeway for parties to replace nominees as Missouri does.  Two local politicians have already announced write-in bids for the state House seat, one a sitting member of the Duluth City Council and the other an assistant fire chief in the city.  If Gauthier withdraws and Democrats can’t replace him on the ballot, they may have to choose one of those two candidates to endorse in order to keep Republican nominee Travis Silver from winning against fractured opposition.  Democrats had hoped to take advantage of Republican disarray to take back control of the legislature, but this throws a big wrench in their plans.

I’ve received a few e-mails wondering why I haven’t written about Gauthier.  To be honest, I didn’t think it was a national news story.  In fact, I forwarded the link of the arrest story to Allahpundit as a possible “Dude” headline and forgot about it until yesterday.  While the incident was disgusting and unbelievably tawdry, no coercion was involved, and both participants are above the age of consent in this state.  It’s a scandal, of course, but until this week, I thought that it was of little interest outside of Minnesota.  At least we’ll finally have a real-world example of the “live boy” metric, thanks to Kerry Gauthier, who should otherwise be sprinting towards obscurity as fast as he possibly can.

Update: Great point from one commenter: “This thread is funny, and sad. They’re “consenting adults”, except when it comes to healthcare. Then he’s a kid for another decade.”

Ironically two politicians’ pics are posted side-by-side. Each in their own ways demonstrating the sorry state of many of our elected officials. Obviously what the MN State Senator did was far worse than the weapons grade stupid comment coming out of Akin’s mouth.

Another irony is that if Gauthier was a part of DC Democratic power establishment, allies would very likely would have tried to save his career. Since he is only a State Senator, he will be forced to fall on his sword shortly.

A Minnesota state lawmaker who authorities say admitted having a liaison with a 17-year-old boy at a rest stop faced calls from party leaders on Monday to give up his re-election bid.

So is it a “liaison” or a “public sex incident?” Because if oral sex was indeed involved, why pretty up the tawdry actions of this creepy looking pervert from Duluth?

BTW, it used to be that a politician would automatically drop out after getting caught doing something like this. A 56-year-old having sex with a 17-year-old is creepy no matter the gender. Yet here we have an individual who apparently thinks his support among the lizard people will put him over the top despite being a pervert.

Happy Nomad on August 21, 2012 at 9:47 AM

Openly gay, fine. Consenting adults? One’s a minor, regardless of the age-of-consent law. I find it absurd that we’ve severed age of consent from age of minority.

At any rate, does anyone really want this creep affecting public policy?

NOTE: This isn’t a “all homosexuals are pedifiles” or even a “significant percentage of homosexuals are pedifiles”. It’s just that we are so PC that if a man molests a litle boy but has a wife (who could be a beard) he’s still considered straight instead of gay or bi. Having sex with a teenage boy is “O.K.”??!?!?

For a 56 year old man?!?!?

First off, if this was a republican – you KNOW the MSM would be absolutely BLASTING him.

Secondly, most age of consent laws have a clause stating that age of consent prior to being legally considered an adult only covers consent with an individual within a specified delta, ie a 23 year old can have sex with a 17 year old, but a 24 year old cannot.

I’m not so sure what this guy did actually is legal. In either case it most certainly is IMMORAL.

he’s openly gay unlike a large portion (larger than most can imagine) of men looking for ‘ no strings attached sex’ from young males and hustlers- many of whom are married to women.

his partner was of age- not a child. calling him a pedophile is really outrageous and waters down the meaning of the word to suit purposes other than protecting children from real predators.

when heterosexual men rape infants in the crib no one is screaming about pedophiles and perversion- but which is worse- 2 consenting persons both of age or the monster who violates an infant?

the majority victims of under the age of consent rape( both of the consented but not old enough to legally consent and rape) are females with the majority of the adults in the situation being male. the majority victims of child rape are females. the majority of stereotypical stranger kidnappings (with a sex crime as the motivating factor) in this country are of teenage females. in fact the majority of all kidnapped minors are teenagers.

people know nothing about pedophiles and need to stop associating them with gay people. many of us fought to keep NAMBLA out of any association with gay rights and activism. some of us were victims of these sociopaths and being continually associated with them is a grave and malicious insult.

You’re okay with a 56 yo man having sex with a 16 yo boy?

hawkdriver on August 21, 2012 at 11:10 AM

It’s not a matter of condoning the behavior, just who would care.

Cindy, that is my point. Why assume people would care less about something stupid, creepy and unethical a Dem DID than something stupid and ignorant a GOP SAID? In my view, that’s buying into the double standard.

Wish I had more time to chat but I have to get to work. I enjoy reading your comments here (I read often, post only sporadically).

Calling a 17 year old of age compared to a 54 year old man is beyond insulting and disgusting. I guess then you would be upset if this was in another state where the age of consent is 18 right? I thought not. You are hiding facts behind a bad law.

The 17 year old is a child, period. Having three grown children of my own I assure you 17 is no age where a person is aware of who they are or what the world is about. All you are doing is justifying yours and others perverted penchants for young boys. Try as you may but you are NO better than those who belong in NAMBLA.
