CBS: Obama needs to answer for the tone of the campaign

posted at 10:01 am on August 21, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

How well did Barack Obama do in his press conference yesterday?  If you’ve lost CBS …  Norah O’Donnell took Obama to task this morning for his attempt to distance himself from the personal attack run by his former White House aide Bill Burton, which blamed Mitt Romney for the death of a woman whose husband had been laid off years earlier from a Bain-owned steel plant, long after Romney had left Bain’s operations, but curiously while Obama bundler Jonathan Lavine was in charge.  Obama tried dancing away from Nancy Cordes’ question, but it didn’t satisfy Cordes’ colleague at CBS (via Instapundit):

Not only did this fail to impress, it now has CBS talking about just how much of a fantasy “Hope and Change” was in the first place.  It probably doesn’t help that David Axelrod, one of the architects of both the 2008 and 2012 campaigns, told Politico’s Glenn Thrush this, via Buzzfeed’s Zeke Miller:

Twitchy calls BS on Axelrod’s BS call, too:

Yeah, no kidding. Despite all the fawning lapdog media reports about Obama’s “above the fray” campaign style, we kinda noticed that. Here’s what Axelrod told Thrush:

The campaign is doing what it did in 2008, drawing a contrast between Obama and the opposition, he insisted. The difference now is that the pundit class is holding the president to a phony, Catch-22 standard.

Phony standard? Even as Obama embraced negative campaigning in 2008, he repeatedly talked about dispensing with politics as usual. You know, because hope and change. So the pundit class didn’t build that standard alone — Obama made that happen. Intentionally.

Just last month Obama railed against “negativity” and “cynicism” in campaign ads and Axelrod decried Romney super PAC ads “accusing Obama of running a negative campaign.” And now Axelrod is complaining about a false narrative? Obama’s lapdogs regurgitated the talking points they were fed.

Clearly Axelrod knows a thing or two about b.s. notions.

The problem for Axelrod is that the Obama campaign in 2008 was able to maintain the illusion of a positive, post-partisan campaign while engaging in bare-knuckle Chicago-style brawling.  How did they manage to do that?  The national media gave them plenty of cover for that illusion.  This time around, it looks like the national media isn’t playing along — even CBS is calling BS on 2008, too.

Obama needs to answer for the tone of his term in office, which has been “Cash for Clunkers”.

Offtone, offbeat and dischordant.

Obama’s 2008 campaign was so “positive” that even Sarah Palin’s parents needed a bodyguard.

Obama is like the mobster…he has his surrogates go out and do the dirty work, while he does the charity work.

Obama talks softly, sounds sincere, while his workers are burying bodies. People are beginning to see his facade, how phony he is, how corrupt he is.

And because he is so “clever”, they are nailing him for his campaign, but know that he is much worse…like bringing down the mobster for tax evasion, but really know that he was responsible for all the mayhem.

Obama is done…he is toast, and all the people need is an excuse.

Besides, when people keep calling the MSM ‘whores for Obama’, it’s got to have an effect on them sooner or later……..in this case, it was later. Maybe Barry’s treating them like whores also is having an effect.

He told them openly, “your job is to help me.”

He shows up and either by design or by their own subconcious need they did not ask him any questions about the economy or his actions that can be perceived in a bad light.

The media can try to salvage their credibility and the respect they demand from the donks or they can save Ogabe not both.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens, I’m thinking if we get Akin off the ticket they turn on Obama at least to a degree.

cmsinaz on August 21, 2012 at 10:22 AM

the tone of the campaign is set by the fella sitting at the helm. If it is courteous, issues-based, and forthright, then it is a reflection of the top of the ticket. Conversely, if the campaign is malevolent, vindictive, petty, and destructive, then it is reflective of the top of the ticket. This campaign is a reflection of Obama’s heart, and that is the honest truth.

ted c on August 21, 2012 at 10:24 AM

The MSM loves Berry but he has kept them at a distance and that drives them nuts. They are slowly turning into jilted lovers. All obozo needs to do to keep them happy is to smile at them in person once in a while, but he hasn’t even done that. They know that they would never try to trap him with gotcha questions or tricky follow ups and it pains them that he won’t placate them with an occasional interview. It’s humiliating for them to go to cocktail parties and have to admit that obozo hasn’t even looked at them in over a year.

Flange on August 21, 2012 at 10:25 AM

Does this mean that NBC, CBS or ABC are goin’a feature the OOTD as an end to their daily news show?

Then MSNBC will give the boss emeritus her one hour show.

And the NYT will have leaked papers about failed foreign policy?

IlikedAUH2O on August 21, 2012 at 10:25 AM

I will begin to respect the media a LITTLE BIT again if any of the LSM call Obama out on his outright lie last night about the “no one called him a felon” line. EVERYone knows that Cutter basically called him a felon over the Bain fiasco, and it was repeated by other Obama surrogates thereafter. If they won’t call him out on this blatant, outright LIE, there’s not too much to respect them about.

Let’s see, the tone of the campaign was so positive that Obama supporters torched Sarah Palin’s church. Obama supporters photoshopped obscene photos using Sarah Palin’s head and posted them on the Internet. Obama supporter NYT accused McCain falsely of an adulterous affair on Page 1. Obama supporter intimidated voters in Philadelphia with a club or crowbar. Obama supporters keyed cars that dared to have McCain/Palin bumper stickers. Etc. Etc. Etc.

This mild half-hearted criticism of Obama by some in the MSM will run its course and go away as soon as the conventions start.

They are only doing it to counter the bias charges hurled at them, charges that are beginning to gain some traction among the clueless doubters who haven’t noticed until now. And they always need to have a few video clips they can use as a counterpoint whenever they are hit with the bias charge.

Also, they are sending Team Socialism a subliminal message. — “We may not be able to keep helping you out if you go too far. Be more subtle in your attacks. We’ll extrapolate and fill in the blanks for you. Wink, wink.”

Why?

Maybe Romney people are telling the media to very careful. Their reputation with the public is already lower than dirt, lower than Congress. If they go any lower they’ll be gone. Do they want to become part of the campaign? Do they want internet commercials comparing coverage? What happens if Romney runs broadcast commercials comparing coverage and using TV personalities in side to side screens? The media will scream bloody murder, the Romney campaign will shrug it off and say, “With the economy in the state it’s in, Obama shouldn’t be in the 40s in polls. It’s a dead heat because you’re not reporting. You’re campaigning. Stop campaigning, start reporting and we’ll stop the ads that counter your campaign.”

I have to conclude from this and the stories from Newsweek, Halperin’s concession that the media will do what Obama wants, and the article that came out about Jonathan Chait admitting that the media is leftist that the revenues are down drastically. That and internal polling must show that little Barry is going down in a landslide. Rats deserting a sinking ship. Lets pull up the gangplank and let them go down with the ship I say. They were more than happy to help get this guy elected and now they are suffering huge revenue losses because of it. It’s more complex than that…a woman was killed on Bechtel’s watch, Mitt refused to prosecute, and chose a group of Bechtel exec’s to “research” what happened…eventually Bechtel was found negligent, and Mitt refused to fine them let alone prosecute them…finally, by judicial order, Mitt was forced to fine them, but did so at the minimum. The next year, Mitt awarded them a multi-million dollar contract.
Who is Bechtel? One of the largest engineering companies in the U.S., and has been a huge supporter of his dad, than him, and of course, Bechtel is heavily involved in Mormon leadership…cronyism at the highest level.

Don’t stick you head in the sand…this will be a major issue when the decide to pounce this on Mitt…and imagine the spin they will take.
The “death of a woman with cancer” was the trial run…

Holding hands, and singing kumbyya, is great for you Mitt lovers…but the reality is, there are things that they will come after him for, and you have to be prepared and out in front of the news.
This one is no small story…death of a woman, cronyism, payoffs…it’s all there and will be so distorted it will sound like he was in charge of everything.

He needs to get someone to bring this out now, well before the last few weeks, so he can answer these charges and make it “old news”.

They are and will continue to be in the tank for him, even after he loses and during the lame duck session and even onto inauguration day in January!!! The sour tones now emanating from the MSM results from Obama ignoring them, afraid to slip in a gaffe a la Akin and Biden, and preferring non-threatning, worshiping venues like People Magazine and Entertainment Tonight, both trivialities when it comes to reporting but oh so satisfying to his unthinking base of supporters who prefer style over substance.

Bob in VA on August 21, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Wow. First Newsweek, now CBS. The tide has turned. Even the lapdogs now know what a disaster obama has been how stupid they will look if they keep fawning over Obama and then he gets beaten like a rented mule.

Major Garret had an article last week that said the O campaign and some really awful stuff on Romney that was to be released drip drip drip in the weeks before the election.

Can’t wait. Blech.

Agreed, this is just a way of smoking him out, getting him to co-operate with journalists…these are spurned lovers who will always welcome back the “cheater”.

No doubt…all of it out of context, but that’s the way they roll.

To pretend it won’t happen or have an effect is the danger of being such a Mitt lover, a thinking that Mitt is some kind of prophet, is how you lose these things.

One wrong move, and it can blow up in your face…anything they know, Romney campaign should leak now.

right2bright on August 21, 2012 at 11:29 AM

So, is CBS finally waking up or are they throwing Obama under the bus to retroactively preserve the illusion of their own journalistic integrity in the event of an Obama loss?

I suppose we’ll see what happens during the next Presidency, regardless of who wins.

mintycrys on August 21, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Uh, that’s nice, but, CBS is part of obama’s campaign – they spend 99% of their time propagandizing for him.

Pork-Chop on August 21, 2012 at 11:47 AM

Let’s be real. I keep hearing conservative talk and blogs regurgitate all the unemployment and economic statistics and debt in order to make the point that Obama can’t run on his record. Rush and Mark Levin are the only two I know of that are making the point that this has been Obama’s agenda all along and, in his mind, the last four years have been a success. We all know this, right?

Romney and Ryan have to win this election or we have lost the freedom every past generation fought and died for, as well as our Constitution. We also need to fight within our states which are being taken over by special interests, affecting our freedoms and property rights.

End of lecture. I just had to get that off my mind.

I doubt they can regain journalistic integrity. I haven’t watched the mainstream media for decades. However, it is a way to get mentioned on conservative media.

A lot of good comments here.
bottom line to me?

It’s a start.

SOURCES: Biden at GOP convention; Secret Service in Tampa say they are Biden advance — he’s coming Monday or Tuesday… Developing…

Do the Democrats really want Joe ‘They gonna put y’all back in chains’ Biden at the GOP convention?

i assume the internals are terrible and yes, he’s is going down big. the quandry for LSM and the dem establishment, now knowing whats coming, is how to save the “ideology”. if bho goes down because of his socialism, then they (the establishment, and LSM) are doomed. so their calculus i imagine is once its fully out in the open, the depths of his defeat, they will have to turn this into a personal defeat. its obama’s fault, personally. not his policies. its NOT the socialism stupid. the question i suppose is how they will do it. when the establishment turns the LSM loose, and what particulars of personal failings they leak. thats the fun part. how will they frame it: he just too plucky and smart and he was just a little aloof. the common folks just couldnt understand him. or go a little more nuclear: he was never able to deal with “washington”, get into the whole lack of leadership qualities etc. the other interesting thing will be when his own turn on him, a narcississtic personality sufferer like BHO will be very dangerous. we’ll see how many bridges her burns along the way there at the end. the dudes gonna end up lower than carter obviously in policy/results terms, but he may end up lower in the likability scale, which will be no small feat.

A rendering plant would be a good place for Axelrod and Obama to work next year. They cannot strep away form bullst.

Nancy Cordes evidently missed her email from the White House on what to ask to the president yesterday.

fbcmusicman on August 21, 2012 at 12:10 PM

This is quite a concession, methinks. They must think he’s going to lose, and lose badly, on November 6th.

I think the State Media indeed sees a chance Obama is going to lose, and that from a longer term view, replacing an incompetent radical leftwinger with a competent technocratic one is not a bad thing from their perspective.

If Obama looks weak as we get near the election the State Media may well throw him overboard and start selling Romney as a “sensible, moderate” Republican they can work with.

Of course Ryan complicates that plan, as unlike Romney he is a conservative and seems to actually want to rock the crony socialist boat…

I get your point that RR need to be ready, but the great thing about running against King Disaster is that he’s already done everything he’s accusing Mitt of doing and then some.

txhsmom on August 21, 2012 at 12:18 PM

If he loses the MSM Barkster 2012 is going to go down in flames.

He needed BushHiter, the MSM, a jacked economy, and racial guilt to pull out his 52% last time.

He’s still got the jacked economy but now he owns it.

CorporatePiggy on August 21, 2012 at 12:25 PM

He needs to answer only Stalin.

A quick on-the-road communication from a longtime D.C. political operative rips the cover off of what is being reported as a surprise visit by President Barack Obama to the daily White House press briefing. This was no surprise visit – it was a carefully planned and staged event with the complicit cooperation of White House approved media figures all intended to gain political points by reigniting the now old and tired “war on women” ploy.

Schadenfreude on August 21, 2012 at 12:38 PM

I believe, like others, that the media is simply deserting what they believe is a sinking ship (hopefully they are right) and when the ship goes down they want to “appear” unbiased before they start attacking the new winner – Mitt Romney.

Nope, the liberal media did not lose their liberal bias. They merely want to be on the winning side for “credibility” before they again attack conservatives.

katablog.com on August 21, 2012 at 12:39 PM

He knows his media well.

He is their Pimp.

They are his harlots.

He feeds them his sh*t.

They think it’s Beluga caviar.

Suffocate, you fools.

He hates you.

Schadenfreude on August 21, 2012 at 12:39 PM

The 0bama campaign has become a non-stop convolution of avoidance. No responsibility is being taken for anything – anyhting at all. The harder he contorts to avoid stopping the buck, the worse he looks.

Keep it up, Barry, you’re sinking your own ship.

He needs to get someone to bring this out now, well before the last few weeks, so he can answer these charges and make it “old news”.

right2bright on August 21, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I can’t wait until he finally pulls out the “Magic Underwear” attack on Mitt’s Mormonism. It’s going to be entertaining to watch that one blow up in 0bozo’s face. Stewart and Fallon, et al, will have a field day with it, and even the dumbest audience will realize what a farce 0bozo has become.
