Surprise: Unexpected guest stops by the White House press briefing

posted at 3:21 pm on August 20, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

President Obama has been taking a bunch of flak lately for giving a noticeably large chunk of his media time to outlets like Entertainment Tonight and local radio, and especially for not meeting with the White House press corps for months, while allowing his campaign surrogates to field some of the more tricky issues with the mainstream media. Looks like Team Obama wanted to quell the criticisms, as President Obama made an unscheduled appearance at the White House press briefing Monday afternoon. The President took various questions from the press corps, saying that the use of chemical or biological weapons by the Syrian government would be a “red line” for possible U.S. military intervention; disputing the idea that he’s running an overly negative campaign; and weighing in on recent rape-related remarks by Rep. Todd Akin as “offensive.”

“Let me first of all say the views expressed were offensive. Rape is rape. And the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we’re talking about doesn’t makes sense to the American people and certainly doesn’t make sense to me,” Obama told reporters.

There was also more of the standard fare about the many ways in which our darned obstructionist Congress is spitefully neglecting to implement President Obama’s jobs-and-economy-related agenda, but then there was this beautifully blatant moment of out-of-control campaign-tone denial, emphasis mine:

Well, first of all I am not sure that all of those characterizations that you laid out there were accurate. For example, nobody accused Mr. Romney of being a felon. And, I think that what is absolutely true is if you watch me on the campaign trail, here’s what I’m talking about. I’m talking about how to put Americans back to work.

Er… really? Flashback to July:

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter suggested that Mitt Romney may be a criminal on a conference call with reporters this morning about a Boston Globe report that shows that Romney stayed at Bain Capital three years past when he said he’d left.

Cutter said that there were two ways to interpret the story. The first: Mitt Romney was “misrepresenting his position” at Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, “which is a felony.”

Or, he was “misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people. If that’s the case, if he was lying to the American people, that’s a real character and trust issue,” Cutter said.

this kind of reminds me of a prostitute who has been beaten by her trick. and then as the trick walks out the door, he drops a 20 on her and hands her a washcloth for her fat lip.

I saw some interesting reactions to the presser from twitchy.

So, the preacher in chief takes time out of his busy campaign schedule to go in front of the media and smack Akin around. What a disgrace this man is.

Terrye on August 20, 2012 at 4:35 PM

His “rape is rape” comment was well rehearsed, and was the reason he had the presser. Looks like his campaign is going to launch a full-on assault against Ryan for co-sponsoring some bills with Akin that apparently tried to “define” what rape actually is. This Akin guy just set off a bomb in the middle of this campaign. It’s gonna be nothing but “rape” for the next week or several weeks — just as the dems like it. And God help the first GOP candidate that says “can we move on to some ‘real’ issues.” This is a disaster.

Was watching MSNBC a few minutes ago and the of course they were talking about the rape comments. At the bottom of the screen was a caption that read something like “Republican Senate candidate under fire for rape comments”. Right next to the caption was a picture of Romney. LOL

Wigglesworth on August 20, 2012 at 4:44 PM

I agree Obama came out just so he could latch on to the rape comment and revive the war on women. What a gutsy President. No doubt as some said here they will try and slime Romney and Ryan with this.

Wigglesworth on August 20, 2012 at 4:48 PM

Ha. Ha. Ha. I’m sure all the people without jobs and prospects and losing their homes are amused.

Tee hee, Mr. Tapper.

Losers.

kim roy on August 20, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Look, I’m just trying to find something, anything, humorous in all this. Because if I didn’t, I might kill myself. If you don’t like what journalists are or are not doing, then address their actions directly. Don’t fault me for finding something sunny to keep my spirits up. I am making a conscious effort to be hopeful for our future while planning for the worst. I spent nearly a year unemployed, so don’t assume I am unaffected by all this Obama bullcrap.

Again, my point is that you didn’t need to quote me in order to state your opinion about journalists.

chelie on August 20, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Look, you did say “the best part”. Was there a good part?

And one thing about commenting on a public board is that sometimes your post *will* be commented on and sometimes in ways that may not be agreeable to you.

And yes I did need to quote you. Why not? Tapper thought he was being amusing and (and really that’s most of what goes on here and on any DISCUSSION board) I disagreed.

If you really don’t want people to reply or are concerned about people replying in ways that you don’t like, then with all due respect and not to be argumentative, then don’t post because once you post something is no longer up to you.

Sorry you were offended. That was not my intention.

Obama has more crust than a freshly baked Italian or French loaf as per this AOL headline:

Is it too much to ask the WH press corpse or any other media interviewer to probe the Preezy on areas that he is responsible for and knock off the idiocracy questions that are not relevant to his position?

Did the Press Corps stand this time when Obowma entered the room…?

The President shows up at the press briefing and these are the questions they ask him?

Absolutely!!

Well that should keep the White House Press Corps happy for another 4 weeks.

No, all you you had to do was make your point about how you thought Tapper & other journalists were tools and two-faced (if that’s what you meant). You didn’t make it clear that you were referring to journalists as “losers”, and not me.

I’ll let go now of this now.

chelie on August 20, 2012 at 5:31 PM

Heh. The thin-skinned nitwit President couldn’t take another day of criticism for his pansy campaign interviews with People and ET, so he shows up unexpected and unprepared for to make a campaign speech in front of his biggest fans.

What a NancyBoy.

Now this is just silly. There’s no way that you could have construed that I was calling YOU a loser unless you specifically wanted to. Plus, I said “losers” and unless there is more than one of you, that makes no sense.

Get over it. You don’t get to dictate how someone responds to your post(s) here. You can whine about it, like you are doing now, but I apologized as you are clearly offended that someone responded to your post without offering you tea.

I could whine about how you keep editing out actual points in my favor to continue your butthurt, but I have my big girl panties on today. Maybe tomorrow.

I caught a bit of this tripe, live.
When the subject of Romney’s taxes came up, our Uniter-in-Chief semi-demurred, saying the request wasn’t because they expected he’d done anything illegal, BUT THAT ….
the returns Romney HAS shared showed he had Swiss Bank accounts, and since most of Americans do not, it’d be helpful for them to know what his returns show.

Such the Uniter.

Epic disaster for Obama today. The beauty of Obama is he doesn’t know when to just shut up. He is such a narcissist that loves to hear himself talk that he just looks more and more foolish the deeper he gets. This presser made Biden look intelligent. Bravo, encore, encore!

Ellis on August 20, 2012 at 6:57 PM

Really enjoyed how the WH press corps hammered him on Fast and Furious, the contempt of Congress charge against Holder, and the reason why he exerted executive privilege.

Uh….Oh, what?
