Quotes of the day

posted at 9:31 pm on August 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

The Obama team on Sunday maintained that Vice President Joe Biden has not become a liability to the president’s reelection bid, despite the recent Republican backlash over his latest gaffe…

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter, reaffirmed the president’s confidence in Biden and noted his comment, while awkwardly delivered, did highlight an important difference between the two presidential campaigns.

“They’re using that one word as a distraction, but the larger point is an important point,” Cutter said Sunday on ABC’s This Week, in response to the Romney camp’s criticism of Biden’s comments.

***

“Y’all?” Santorum asked incredulously. “Y’all is y’all. When you are in a group – and I have been in groups like that, and you know, it is very easy when you are in a group of people that, you know, when you are in the South or up in different areas of the country and different groups of people – and you develop an affinity with the group that you are speaking in front of, and that is what the vice president was doing. And he tried to develop the affinity and he did it in a horrendous way, and he should apologize for it.”

***

“There isn’t a racist bone in Joe Biden’s body and to suggest that, I think, is over the edge,” Durbin shot back. “This fact is, Joe Biden, throughout his career, has fought for equality and opportunity and to suggest something else — it may have been a misuse of words, but to take it to that extreme is just too much Mr. Mayor.”

“Well, how about apologizing for it,” Giuliani responded.

***

Barack Obama is in danger of ruining his “hope and change” brand by “turning negative” this year! This claim simply relies on a re-imagined history. Those who now believe Obama ran only positive commercials in 2008 may want to review the record. While John McCain ran a higher percentage of negative ads, Obama still availed himself of plenty of opportunities to criticize and contrast his opponents, as more than 50% of his ads were negative, according to the Wisconsin Advertising Project.

And during the primary campaign with Hillary Clinton, implicit in his positive argument that he would usher in “hope and change” was the counter-argument that Clinton was a symbol of the old, dirtier way of doing business in DC. Based on emails I have from that time, specific attacks on Clinton ranged from policy critiques on her health care plan and its individual mandate, to more personal characterizations like “disingenuous,” “untruthful,” “dishonest,” “doing whatever it takes to win,” “attempting to deceive the American people just so that they can win this election,” and “playing politics with war.”

The bottom line: For better or worse, Obama is a professional politician, and always has been. This means he plays by similar rules and playbooks as other people in his line of business.

***

Paul Ryan is a real addition to Romney’s camp. He’s young, intelligent, well-informed and articulate. He’s serious about matters which are serious. And he has a genuine personal appeal. In fact, when I think of Ryan in comparison with the Jar Jar Binks who currently serves President Obama, that bundle of malapropisms, confusion, malice and profound shallowness the world knows as Joe Biden, I think the Romney choice is a stoke of contrasting genius. Biden some people have called a “gaffe-machine.” But they struggle for real explanation, for who has fathomed the dead still waters of the mare closum of the Biden mind?…

Of course, immediately after this consummate ["chains"] smear, a lot of people dismissively said, “Oh, it’s only Joe again.” Problem is, it’s always Joe. He’s a bumbling, offensive, shallow, undisciplined excuse for a vice-president

Some of this election was supposed to have pivoted on Romney’s pick of Ryan. Now it might — after the “y’all in chains” comment this week — turn more on up-to-now-ignored Joe Biden. After all, what besides misadventure, an undammable flow of cliches and gaffes, and sour race-based slurs, does Joe Biden bring to the Obama ticket? If we discount the flurry of prayers begging that Obama never fall ill or worse, nothing…

No, Obama has to live with his VP, like a strange uncle in the attic. But I suspect after this week, the handlers will take over Joe, write his scripts, narrow his appearances and keep him away for good from African-American audiences. If he needs something to feel like he’s contributing, a colouring book should suffice. And perhaps a little extra clarification on what century he’s living in, too.

***

Via the Corner.

***

Cutter jabbed back at Giuliani’s comments regarding Biden’s abilities to handle the job as vice president by recalling Giuliani’s full-throated defense of controversial pick Sarah Palin to do the job nearly three years ago.

“If he wants to criticize the capacity of a vice president to take hold of this country, he should go back and look at those remarks and whether he still believes that they’re true,” Cutter said.

My instinct tells me that the Obama-azz-dwellers in the media will take it national, incl. all the debates.

He should get out by Tuesday, whiley he can. I expect his Ego to say no, and then for him to lose.

God, I hate McCaskill, the cheating airplane harlot and Obamacare whore and etc.

Forget about it. Steelman and Brunner lost (dang it) and Aiken is not going to step down. I don’t want to see you getting ulcers over something you have no control over and we don’t need cries for Aiken to step down.

The election is in November and there will be a lot of ads here against McCaskill and her kissing buddy Obama to blunt any nastiness McCaskill and her goons come up with.

If you live here, we need you to get out the vote.

This is a devastating blow. N. Ferguson was a McCain adviser, as an economist, but he is a D, one of the few sane ones left. He writes some of the best articles and his speeches are great.

No one on the left counts Ferguson as a D. Like you said, he worked for McCain and that article is pure hackery.

libfreeordie on August 20, 2012 at 1:34 AM

McCaskill’s campaign spent $2 million to run ads that boosted Akin as the “true conservative” during the three-way primary race for the Republican nod, which he won by six percentage points. McCaskill considered him the weakest potential challenger and wanted him to win the primary, the New York Times reported. The Democratic senator is trailing Akin by about 8 points in the polls, according to TPM’s Polltracker.

The avove is from Yahoo News and KTVI, one of the local channels here in St Louis.

McCaskill will spend a lot of money here but she will be outspent and that eight point lead will not evaporate because of this BS. Aiken might very well beat her in the St Louis area and Brunner is also backing him.

“There isn’t a racist bone in Joe Biden’s body

I guess that depends upon how y’all understand the meaning of what racist is(sorry to paraphrase the honorable Bill “I did not have sex with that woman” Clinton)

The fact is the cruelest kind of racism is that which is deliberately and systematically practiced by all democrats–that racism is the slavery of the soul on the “only the government can help you” plantation. The very last thing the left desires is to actually free the black community from their socialist clutches.

The left’s entire agenda has been to divide and conquer everyone in America and then pick up the pieces when the anger of the groups they arranged us into destroy what was a fairly solid melting pot. The black community was merely their first capture, and the race baiting pimps and political agitators maintain the dependency of body and soul far to well. Dignity has been traded for a governent program in much of our inner cities and the left intends to keep it that way.

The job of the GOP is to spell out freedom for them and provide a dignified underground above ground railroad for them. Remind them of their God-given humanity and worth, and call them to toss off the schackles that the Democrat masters have placed on them with their deceit and government candy. It has destroyed their very souls, and stolen the natural inclination to become free and live fully and successfully–the very thing the left hates most(next to God)

Don L on August 20, 2012 at 6:23 AM

To add a thought:

The very last thing the left desires is to actually free the black community from their socialist clutches and their weapon is the psychological one of victimization and agitation. Then, in turn, the resulting anger and degradation reinforces a culture of crime and degeneracy which in turn foments dislike by responsible people, causing criticism which then is used by the left as proof of racism…. the prefect cycle of oppression.

I offered a deal, I’d ignore her if she ignored me, but the need to interject her nonsense into my other interactions was too overpowering for her. After her ignoring 3 of my warnings that she didn’t know what she was in for if she didn’t back off I declared #WAR.

Flora Duh on August 20, 2012 at 12:34 AM

Grow up, Flora Duh. You are declaring “war” on an anonymous message board poster who almost never interacts with you? What is this, junior high? As I remember it, during the primary season, supporters of a particular candidate (who is now our nominee) were treated terribly by many of you and were insulted with all kinds of sexist and vulgar smears. It wasn’t “cool” to be for a certain candidate, yet many of us went against what was “cool” or “trendy” in any given week and remained supportive of the candidate we KNEW was far and away the best. The way petunia and Sheryl and others were harassed on this message board was beyond shameful. Now, when some of you guys tried that with me, I slapped right back at you. And some of you guys reacted by crying and whining like babies. Maybe you all weren’t so used to that in your little echo chamber? Oh, well. Deal.

That Flora Duh is still smarting over an online comment someone made to her *8* MONTHS ago is a tad embarrassing. Did I embarrass Flora Duh that badly? Miss Flora, you are not always so nice and you don’t always behave in a mature way. Yes, you act sweet and do your little chit chat with some regulars and you seem to fish for compliments with some of your postings, but you are just as quick to sink to gutter-level insults as any online troll. Just recently, after I had described my enthusiasm for our nominee, you made vulgar, rude comments about some kind of supposed white creamy or crusty substance left around my mouth, even though my comment wasn’t directed towards you and didn’t have anything to do with you. I would have thought that kind of vulgarity would be beneath someone who wants to be regarded as a mature adult.

Flora Duh, I’m sorry I embarrassed you and made you feel bad 8 months ago when I spoke in a brash way and expressed strong support for my preferred candidate. I saw a lot of negativity and stupidity directed toward a particular candidate, and I made an effort to give a strong counter voice to that. As for your vulgar, rude comments to me, I forgive. As I’ve said repeatedly, I don’t see the point in your continuing to bitterly snipe at me. Let me fix something in your comment:

#WAR —> #UNITY

Most of us here understand that Obama must be defeated. Let’s leave the primary season squabbles behind us. I never mention that stuff at all now. I very easily could have gloated and said “I told you so” etc. but I have no interest in any of that. We are all on the same team, and right now the name of the game is removing Barack Obama by electing Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

As for my comments about Sarah Palin, why does it bother you all so much that someone does not see the point in bowing down to and constantly worshiping that woman? You know what, many conservatives agree with Palin on the issues, but don’t want her to run for president and don’t see her as the most effective spokesperson for conservatives or Republicans. It’s kind of an unspoken thing, but I spoke it. When I see the silly Palin worship, I want to offer a dose of reality and let people know that not all conservatives worship this woman as if she were some kind of deity. Palin has now offered strong support for the Romney/Ryan ticket and has graciously announced that she will pass the convention speaking baton and will allow up-and-coming conservative speakers to have the convention spotlight. Great! I admire her for this and say Kudos to the ‘Cuda!

Earlier in this thread I said that I hoped Sarah Palin (along with many other conservatives) would immediately call for Akin to drop out. For some reason this set off all kinds of bluegill-bashing. Would be funny if it wasn’t so pathetic.

bluegill:I bet your off to Chic Fil A…….eh!!

PappyD61 on August 20, 2012 at 7:09 AM

Now, with hopefully all that childishness associated with people’s obsessions with talking about me out the way, I want to re-post this information about how much time we have for Akin to drop out. We encourage you all to make your voices heard.

The window closes Tuesday, 5 pm.
After that, you can’t replace his name on the ballot.

Honestly, I don’t know how the process works or what the latest is. I just know that time is of the essence, and I would imagine that the more people who speak out about this, the more pressure he’ll feel to step aside.

bluegill on August 20, 2012 at 7:20 AM

cmsinaz: my espresso hit the floor. heilman says that akin tried to codify different types of rape in a bill (forcible rape) he sponsored. heilman says paul ryan was a co sponsored the bill.

the left is having a field day. quick get bluegill some smelling salts.

What are the Republicans doing nominating 65 year olds as freshman Senators? The truth comes out: McCaskill did hand pick him. Glad he shot off his mouth early enough to be replaced on the ballot. McCaskill’s camp is probably disturbed it happened too quickly.

Marcus on August 20, 2012 at 1:55 AM

Umm, what, prey tell is wrong with a 65yr old? Are you implying something here? I know PLENTY of 65yr olds that went to Vietnam kiddo, and still know how to balance a budget…

Yes, I still say… Sarah Palin (and others with a big megaphone to conservatives), are you listening? We need a Facebook post calling on him to step down. I would like to see the calls for him to drop out intensified quickly.

bluegill on August 20, 2012 at 7:33 AM

Happy Monday, everybody!

To start things off on a new note (given the debacle in Missouri), here’s something giggle about…

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79867.html

Yes kids, the Obama campaign is… “roiled by conflict” (All is not well in Hopey-Changey Land?)

What? Lining up more excuses? More butt-covering?

I inform, you decide.

CPT. Charles on August 20, 2012 at 7:33 AM

dear leader has no common courtesy….

i hope mitt does the same thing then…dear leader has thrown precedence out the door….

cmsinaz on August 20, 2012 at 7:37 AM

Maybe the biggest evidence that Akin’s comments are toxic is the radio silence on Fox and that no story has shown up on Hot Air. They must really be wondering how to cover this….

libfreeordie on August 20, 2012 at 7:40 AM

“There isn’t a racist bone in Joe Biden’s body and to suggest that, I think, is over the edge,” Durbin shot back.

The charge in this instance is not so much racism as race-baiting. Durbin is trying to obfuscate, as usual.

Until just now, I had missed that Biden was speaking from a teleprompter, so the “chains” comment was not a fleeting spontaneous gaff, but a race-baiting that was scripted well in advance.

Despicable.

I hope Ed Morrissey calls on Akin to be replaced. Time is running out!

Allahpundit, who rarely takes a strong stand or the lead on anything (for him it’s usually just question-asking and wishy-washiness and pondering/following the political pundit swarm’s conventional wisdom theme of the week), had a perfect opportunity to do so last night. Sad to see him say nothing of it.

petefrt on August 20, 2012 at 7:53 AM

Yeah, but I noticed that, before Durbin spoke, Giuliani misspoke a little bit when he said that Biden was appealing to racism. We all know what Giuliani meant, but maybe Giuliani’s slip gave Durbin that opening, unfortunately.

I swear, I can’t believe how our side is so willing to throw Aiken under the bus for a comment he made off the cuff. Yeah, it was a stupid remark but we’ve all made them. No wonder it’s so easy for the dems to kick our a$$es!

Vince on August 20, 2012 at 1:39 AM

Akin walked his comments back and I don’t think it will leave too big a mark in MO. If for no other reason, McCaskill is truly despised. But, I have to wonder. What is the real difference between Akin talking about “legitimate rape” and Whoopie Goldberg’s comments about “rape rape.”

Bottom line though, talking about abortion in public is always a powder keg. A candidate should stick with one of the stock answers and not ad lib.

it was clearly stated to you last nite why Sarah can’t say anything about the matter having supported steelman. you agreed with the conclusion. conveniently you forgot this morning.

mitts in a tough bind. he agrees with the abortionists, however he’s stuck with conservatives, so he doesn’t want to beat the guy down too badly.

bottom line obama gets to talk about medicare, rape, mitts taxes till november.

Now is not the time to say, “but people on the left have made similarly despicable or stupid comments, so why should we make a big deal out of it?” Well, if we are going to hold them accountable, shouldn’t we hold ourselves accountable, too? Don’t we want to be better than that?

Akin said that “legitimate rape” (as opposed to what?) would lead to a woman’s body fighting back against unwanted pregnancy. Not only is he apparently clueless about human biology, he seems to be minimizing some sexual assault by making a distinction between “legitimate” and “not legitimate.” How can we take this man seriously now.

This is Sharron Angle all over again. This man is not ready for primetime, and he just gave the Dems a memorable quote that they will be able to get all kinds of mileage out of. We should have been able to pick off Harry Reid easily in 2010. Let’s not screw up in MO now.

renalin on August 20, 2012 at 8:05 AM

Who cares if Palin endorsed Steelman? It might look like sour grapes to some, but she’ll just have to take it. This is about our chances of winning in November, so if Sarah Palin has the guts she ought to speak up and speak up quickly… even if some will think she’s just doing it because she endorsed someone else. Her candidate would probably not even be the replacement, since Brunner is the guy who came in second behind Akin.

bluegill on August 20, 2012 at 8:19 AM

i read on the msnbc crawl that the romney campaign now says the mitt and ryan are now on the same page on medicare.

now? they’ve known each other for years. why now, after one of the worst vp rollouts in recent memory.

i’m not getting a real positive feeling about november folks.

renalin on August 20, 2012 at 8:20 AM

Is Biden’s intellect representative of the state of Delaware like Boxer’s and Feinstein’s is to California?

racquetballer on August 20, 2012 at 8:20 AM

I think one reason we haven’t seen more conservative bloggers or politicians like Sarah Palin call on Akin to drop out is because they are scared of the reaction they’ll get from some hardcore, “no apology ever!” types. Hopefully some of them will show some courage today and prove me wrong.

One is a senate candidate, one is a comedian. Though really who can tell which at this point.

racquetballer on August 20, 2012 at 8:20 AM

I don’t know, but if that comment is representative of your own intellect, then you’re pretty darn stupid.

Is Biden’s intellect representative of America (he is our VP, after all)? See how idiotic your comment is? California, for example, is a huge state with reps like Issa.

cmsinaz on August 20, 2012 at 7:37 AM

Quite true… he is crass, and the stench of fear is becoming more obvious by the day.

But, I would turn it into a plus…

Monitor his speeches, and seize on any off-TOTUS stupidity that issues forth. (You know it’s gonna happen.) Use the platform of the convention to magnify and any contrast commie/collectivist shite he utters, and immediately turn him on his head.

With a little prior planning, it is doable.

Think ‘political akido’… and make Obozo regret breaking custom.
