Quotes of the day

posted at 9:16 pm on August 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

On the campaign trail this week, Ryan’s discussion of Medicare has focused on President Obama’s taking $716 billion from Medicare to pay for Obamacare, along with brief reassurances that he and Mitt Romney will protect the program. But in Florida today, Ryan put Medicare front and center. He both stepped up his attacks on Obamacare’s plan to change Medicare for current seniors and made a positive case for reforming the program for Americans under the age of 55. Ryan warned that Obamacare installed a board of bureaucrats that will “cut Medicare in ways that will lead to denied care for current seniors.” And he framed his case for reform in terms of family values -— in terms of his own obligation to protect Medicare as it is today for his mother, and to reform it in his generation so that his children will benefit from a social safety net and a debt-free nation…

Ryan explained that “in order to make sure we can guarantee that promise for my mom’s generation for those baby boomers retiring every day, we must reform it for my generation. To save it for this generation, you have to reform it for my generation, so it doesn’t go bankrupt when we want to retire.”…

And what did “Boston”—i.e., Romney headquarters—think of the event? One source said, “‘Boston’ was nervous early this morning. They watched it on TV. At first they were relieved. Then they were excited.”

***

That’s the genius of Romney’s vice-presidential pick: It explicitly invites Americans to “do the right thing.” Insofar as he’s known to the electorate at all, Paul Ryan is the man with the plan — the guy who understands that multi-trillion-dollar spendaholic government cannot continue. On that subject, Obama is the man with no plan, and no plans to get any plan. Yet the mere selection of Ryan has already improved the quality of the Obama campaign: Two weeks ago, they were denouncing Romney for killing a woman by cunningly giving her cancer five years after laying off her husband. Now they’re denouncing Ryan for killing off Medicare. The former is the opening scene from the straight-to-video Carcinogenic Zombie Mormon Venture Capitalist Apocalypse; the latter has a very very teensy-weensy gossamer thread of connection to the issues facing the United States. So we should congratulate the Democrats on a modest re-acquaintance with reality. With Ryan on the ticket, the central question facing America can’t be ducked…

For the record, Obama has already made $716 billion in Medicare cuts to pay for Obamacare. That’s three-quarters of a trillion. The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, was in Ottawa last week asking Her Majesty’s Canadian Government to chip in for the euro-zone bailout. The euro zone includes some of the richest nations in history, but it’s still not enough. And the entire euro-zone bailout is $450 billion — or a little over half the cost of the first Obama stimulus. Under Obama’s no-plan plan, there’s not enough money on the planet.

Republican strategists believe that there is really only one way to win the Medicare message wars: mount a bruising offense and attack Democrats for their own actions surrounding the popular federal health care program for senior citizens…

“It caught the Democrats a little off-guard that the fight’s being taken to them on an issue that they thought they’d just play defense on,” Stutzman said. “I just think this thing is really smart on a lot of levels that are not being appreciated: bringing up the issue now because it’s going to be brought up anyway, litigate it and win it now or at least fight it to a draw — which I’m absolutely convinced they can do — and that returns the October debate to jobs and the economy and now you’re back to a referendum on the incumbent.”…

Ultimately, though, the endgame for the Romney team on Medicare is to use the issue to move the discussion back to jobs and the economy, which is where the campaign wants the focus to be heading into Election Day. That isn’t an argument, however, that fits neatly into a soudbite.

“Romney can win this argument, but not until he finds a way to shift it back to the economy,” said Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California and a veteran GOP strategist. “There are connectors between Medicare and deficits and economic growth.”

***

If the past week has been any indication, the Democrats are not well prepared to deal with this strategy. I doubt they wanted to spend a week explaining why and how they cut Medicare for current seniors while still failing to avert the program’s future collapse. They’re still struggling to explain that, and with their first few excuses — we didn’t do it, Ryan did it too, they’re not real cuts, and seniors don’t really need those benefits we cut — mostly fallen by the wayside in a matter of days, they have turned to abject double counting, insisting that even though they spent the money elsewhere (on Obamacare), their Medicare cuts nonetheless increase the future solvency of the Medicare program…

The longer they flail, the less likely the Democrats are to be able to effectively bring up Medicare themselves in this election season, and the more likely Romney is to keep voters focused on the economy in the fall—and therefore focused on what they like least about the incumbent president. It’s easy to see what Romney will be running on in September and October. But what will Obama be running on?

***

“Like a lot of Americans, when I think about Medicare, it’s not just a program,” Ryan told the mostly-elderly crowd at The Villages, a central Florida retirement community that is billed as the world’s largest. “It’s what my mom relies on. It’s what my grandma had.”…

“Medicare was there for our family, for my grandma, when we needed it then, and Medicare is there for my mom while she needs that now, and we need to keep that guaranteed,” the 42-year-old House Budget Committee chairman said, describing the experience of being one of the primary caregivers for his grandmother, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer’s.

***

Obama expressed some artificial bemusement that the GOP ticket has focused on in recent days on Medicare, with Romney using a whiteboard as a prop Friday in South Carolina and Ryan stumping Saturday with his mother in The Villages retirement community in Florida.

“You’d think they’d avoid talking about Medicare, given the fact that both of them have proposed to voucherize the Medicare system,” Obama said. I guess they figured the best defense is playing on offense.”…

“Their plan would put Medicare on track to be ended as we know it,” he said. “It would be an entirely different plan. It would be a plan in which you could not count on health care because it would have to come out of your pocket. That’s the real difference between our plans on Medicare. That’s the choice in this election and that’s why I’m running for a second term as president.”

Given the facts, the events in Boston seem unlikely to stoke nativist sentiments that may derail immigration reform. To the contrary, to the extent it renews fears of terrorism, it will strengthen the case for reform, since the bipartisan proposal fixes major gaps in our national security posture (by implementing a visa-exit system, registering and background-checking undocumented immigrants, gaining 100% awareness of our southern border, etc.).”

I love that last bit. “[G]aining 100% awareness of our southern border”. What the hell does that mean? We’re already aware of the border. The problem is we’re not treating it like one and protecting it against invaders.

Serious question. If this gets rammed through the Senate which looks to be the case considering how far gone Rubio and his aides are, what is its fate in the House? Boehner isn’t seriously going to bring this up for a vote and allow it to pass with 20-30 wobbly Republicans joining a united Democrat caucus, right?

Dzhokhar, at least, seemed well assimilated given the number of classmates who’ve been babbling to the media about how nice and normal and chill he was. Maybe the problem has more to do with him being a sociopath than with “society”?

How about we blame the two brothers. I know personal responsibility is out of fashion these days, but still. . .

The older brother came here legally, but we had 2 chances to deport him. In 2009 he was convicted of domestic abuse then in 2011 we received information from Russia that he had ties to militants. The great thing about immigration law is you don’t even need a criminal conviction to deport someone. Once you have some evidence ship ‘em out! Unfortunately this is not the policy of the Obama administration.

Sure…..they have, for decades, a lock on teaching positions within our public institutions of so-called learning, prominent positions in media and entertainment and thus cast great influence on mushminded people from childhood through adulthood. And too many parents who might have influence otherwise, abandon the raising of their offspring to others in molding character.

So, yes, its our liberal infested society that is, at least, partly at fault.

I think it dies in the house and Democrats continue to Demagogue immigration for Latino votes.

Rubio is the GOP establishment’s slick salesman for Amnesty. Republicans in the Senate are playing possum and letting this roll through because they are tired of having to respond to all the immigration demagoguery on the campaign trail and just want this issue to go away. They wrongly believe that by giving amnesty to illegals, most Latino voters are going to vote some other way than Democrat.

I not only blame our immigration system for the ‘Tsarnaev’s’ I blame it for trying to COLONIZE Mexico, Central, and South America.

In this bill… if an illegal aliens is even related to an American citizen… they get a green card. Thus… not only all those who came here illegally and had a child while here get rewarded… but all of their relatives do, too. How many MILLIONS more will that add to this AMNESTY? It compounds the 11 million this AMNESTY already slates for ‘legalization’.

We cannot support them. It’s that simple. They would all become eligible for Obamacare and a plethora of other benefits under the 83 separate federal welfare programs.

Tell your Member of Congress:

“Reject the Gang of Eight’s Backroom Deal!”

Last week, the Senate Gang of Eight unveiled its “comprehensive” immigration reform plan just after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. The pro-amnesty and open borders lobbies are wasting no time in trying to ram this bill through Congress before the American people have a chance to understand the bill’s detrimental effects!
Proponents of the amnesty legislation argue they are allowing the bill to be addressed in a fair and open manner, yet they insist on holding hearings on the legislation before anyone has a chance to read the bill in its entirety.

In fact, the Senate Judiciary Committee held its first hearing on the 844-page legislation Friday morning, barely 48 hours after the Gang introduced it. Now the Senate Judiciary Committee is currently holding a second hearing on the legislation, featuring 23 witnesses—all of whom have unlikely had time to read the near 900-page bill either.

The Gang claims its bill is not a special path to citizenship, will secure the border, and will strengthen worksite enforcement. This is simply untrue. In reality, the bill:

Grants amnesty (referred to as “registered provisional status” by Gang members) to illegal aliens who came to the U.S. before 2012. This will be done after the Secretary of Homeland Security merely issues PLANS to secure the border and add fencing—not actually secures the border;
Grants an expedited path to citizenship in just five years to illegal aliens who entered the U.S. before the age of 16 and meet certain criteria regardless of their current age;
Gives a green card in five years to illegal alien farm workers who pledge to continue working in ag for a certain period of time;
Allows previously deported illegal aliens to apply for amnesty if they are a spouse, parent, or child of a U.S. citizen or green card holder, or entered the country unlawfully before the age of 16 and meet additional criteria;
Grants green cards in 10 years to those given provisional status so long as:
the Secretary’s border security and fencing plan is “substantially” in place,
E-Verify is simply “implemented” but not yet used by all employers,
and an exit system is in place at only air and sea ports but not land ports of entry;
Waives the above conditions to granting green cards to provisional amnestied aliens if one or more of the conditions are tied up in court after 10 years; and
Grants millions of dollars to organizations to help illegal aliens submit amnesty applications.

Starting tomorrow, Organizing for Action, President Obama’s campaign arm, is urging its members to call Congress to support this amnesty bill.

Don’t let their voices be the only ones your Members of Congress hear. Tell your Members you’ve had enough of the Gang of Eight’s lies. Americans need jobs and our immigration laws enforced, not more D.C. pandering to special interests!

Click here to find your Members of Congress and call today!

On Friday I was one of only two witnesses (the other being Douglas Holtz-Eakin) to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the comprehensive immigration-reform bill. My comments here are not about the substance of my testimony, but about process.

The proposed measure is poised to profoundly reorder our society, both economically and sociologically, and the Gang of Eight drops a bewilderingly complex 844-page bill with innumerable moving parts — a bill drafted behind closed doors on the rest of the Senate only 48 hours before the hearing. There was hardly time to absorb more than the title and preamble before the hearing, at a time when most of the nation and Congress were rightly occupied with the hunt for the surviving Boston Marathon bomber (indeed, the only other witness scheduled to testify was DHS secretary Janet Napolitano, who had to cancel due to the developments involving the imminent capture of the suspect)…

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this process is an abomination. I’ve testified numerous times before the judiciary committee, including the confirmation hearings of the last four nominees to the Supreme Court. Never has the committee treated a matter of such magnitude so cavalierly. One member of the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body used his limited time on Friday to ask me just one urgent question — about my Wikipedia page.

Calling us names and shouting isn’t going to help you. And with the bombings in Boston, not to mention the Saudi kid that was here on a student visa, even though he was flagged for terrorism, one could say that solutions to our immigration problems cannot possibly come out of that town. Simply put, Congress and the White House is going to have to enforce current law for decades before there can be any trust to write any new law. Sorry, politicians, but trust is a real thing. May the flame burn, and burn, and burn. May it be a brushfire!!!

Schadenfreude on April 22, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Bush called those who were down on the Mexican/Texas border attempting to help the ranchers there stay alive, keep their cattle alive, keep their families safe, and keep the land from being ruined, “vigialanties” and worse.

Fact is he knew some of us from the days of getting him elected Gov. of Texas, he turned his back on us and in fact threw us under his F250 bus.

Elite little sob rino.

Obama, whom people like Ted Cruz have accused of wanting to sabotage the bill, is actually going to have OFA campaign on its behalf. Not only are we getting demagogued, we’re being steamrolled on top of it.

If Cruz uses his brain well, he could torpedo the entire thing. If he doesn’t, he’s no different from all the other traitors.

I sure hope everyone here who can see through this bag of catcrap has and will continue to write every congressman and senator they can. The gun bill failed not because the GOP was afraid of it, it failed because we the peeps understood it to be the power grab that it was.

Limerick on April 22, 2013 at 4:09 PM

One other thing. The 2nd Amendment had support from a powerful, vocal interest group led by the NRA. Where are all the powerful voices in support of the anti-illegal immigrant position? Well, there’s one, the ICE union, but they’re a left-leaning organization. So, where are the powerful loud, right-leaning organizations and individuals on this issue?!

Rubio’s greatest mistake, signing on with Graham and McCain. Wanting our laws enforced does not make us bigots or show a lack of compassion. Pandering to the illegal alien population is not the right thing for our country nor the Republican party.

It looks like a WWE type of a setup to me.
McShameless and his Lady Lindsee will throw a tantrum and beat up Hussein and Killery over Benghazi and in turn let Hussein beat up our country . Seems more like a tag match between the 8 custards and Hussein.

“blame our society”?

Are you f*cking kidding me?

Fire this f*cking moron instantly.

I swear, I am never voting for the GOP again until they pull their heads out of their backsides – perhaps ever (and leaning more that direction daily). They may be slightly less insane than Democraps, but only marginally so.

Akzed on April 22, 2013 at 4:40 PM

Capital really wants this immigration bill. And why wouldn’t they. Pushing wages down further is what Wall Street wants, its been the basis of corporate gains in the past decade. Creating a legalized caste of low wage, non-unionized workers? I believe capitalism calls that Yahtzee! So now the right may finally wise up that the GOP is out to do one thing, line the pockets of the corporate interests who donate to their campaigns (yes, Democrats have no other interests either). Can we finally start talking about the way Capital is doing everything possible to sacrifice the American standard of living in order to enrich themselves? You don’t have to be a Marxist to see it, the evidence is plain as day. Tax cuts that benefit, the wealthy. Labor policies that benefit employers. Open borders that benefit profit margins. Name one thing any Republican or Democratic president has done since Reagan was elected that inspired corporations to increase wages. Name one supply side policy that increased wages rather than products? You can’t do it. The only thing that has increased wages since Reagan’s election are a series of boom and bust speculative markets. This is late capitalism people, and you made it all your own. Now with immigration reform you’re starting to get it.

We need to make them US citizens, to see if they are terrorists

J_Crater on April 22, 2013 at 4:21 PM

nobar on April 22, 2013 at 4:44 PM

Nice job, though, by the GOP aide in throwing the word “nativist” in there even though most amnesty opponents on the right support legal immigration.

I think things will start coming unravelled if they keep this stuff up. The GOP can barely hide its hatred and contempt for its voters on a good day. Given the beating Rubio’s been taking I think we’re likely to hear more and more of this talk.

How does a left-wing buzzword like that end up in a Republican aide’s statement?

Because there’s effectively no difference between the left and most of the Republican Party anymore.

Boehner isn’t seriously going to bring this up for a vote and allow it to pass with 20-30 wobbly Republicans joining a united Democrat caucus, right?

Doughboy on April 22, 2013 at 4:07 PM

Tomorrow Obama’s campaign arm Organizing for Action is using its members to call our congress members and pressure them to vote for the immigration bill, a backroom deal concocted by the ‘Gang of Eight’.

Please call you congress members and tell them to vote NO on this backroom immigration deal.

You’ll find your congress members names and email addresses here as well as a petition to tell Rubio NO

We have too many low/no-skilled Americans unemployed. Why are we allowing low/no-skilled workers in? If they want immigration so bad, why can’t we be choosy? Why can’t we get English speakers with skills? Why can’t we get immigrants from Europe and India?

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people’s initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.” Abraham Lincoln

Don L on April 22, 2013 at 4:56 PM

The fault here wasn’t our immigration system, since the suspects immigrated legally a decade ago as kids and apparently were radicalized here.

Continuing contact with people from beyond our borders, both in their former homeland region and in the violent anti-American militant Islamist hot beds of their chosen religion had nothing to do with it?

Do any of these guys understand how the Internet works and what a small world this now is?

farsighted on April 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

[libfreeordie on April 22, 2013 at 4:40 PM]

What are you calling Capital? How should I understand that word when you use it? What is it’s definition.

It might be easy to come together on the country’s problems if you quit perverting the language and pointing fingers at bogeymen.

Dusty on April 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

Given the facts, the events in Boston seem unlikely to stoke nativist sentiments that may derail immigration reform.

Really? Because, despite these guys being citizens (I’m still not sure about the one), they are immigrants. And, when you put them next to folks like the Ft Dix plotters, the immigration angle (especially refugee status) starts to loom even larger.

To the contrary, to the extent it renews fears of terrorism, it will strengthen the case for reform, since the bipartisan proposal fixes major gaps in our national security posture

Why not just implement those fixes, then? Do just the fixes, and let’s see what happens. Maybe you can convince me later to do some form of further reform. But, if all these major gaps exist that need fixing, why not just fix them, and leave the amnesty for another day?

GWB on April 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

This is a really well-written post. The conduct of the GOP members of “the gang” has been reprehensible. They are doing real damage, unbelievable damage. They’ve porked up the bill, offering cornhusker kickback after cornhusker kickback, while calling the base of their party “pro-slavery.” Just disgusting. There is NO daylight between them and DailyKos.

Stick a fork in Rubio. He’s done. After 2008, I decided I would never vote again for anyone I didn’t 100% WANT to vote for. I will never feel that way about Rubio. I don’t think I’m alone.

Rational Thought on April 22, 2013 at 4:58 PM

It seems to me Rubio is one of three things:

1) He’s an idiot and actually thinks that he can make poor, unskilled, Spanish-speaking third-world people into small-government, Republican-voting Constitutional originalists

2) He knows the bill’s a turkey and wants it to fail so he’s inoculated from criticism as a self-hating Hispanic from the left and their allies on the path to the presidency

3) He’s a fraud

crrr6 on April 22, 2013 at 4:24 PM

I think he believes, and perhaps rightly so, that all of these new citizens of Hispanic origin will be beholden to him when he runs for President; even if they are Dems. I think he’s banking that he’ll get 90%+ of that vote block personally, and sees nothing beyond that. This is his stepping stone to being President, nothing more.
