Obama campaign HQs “occupied” by Manning protesters

posted at 10:01 am on August 18, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

While most of us were otherwise occupied this week, the Obama campaign headquarters in both Oakland and Portland had some unexpected, uninvited and unwelcome guests. Protesters who support accused traitor Bradley Manning, coordinating with known “Occupy” groups, camped out in the campaign offices to clearly explain … something.

A protest at the Barack Obama campaign headquarters in downtown Oakland ended peacefully late Thursday, with a handful of arrests but no reports of violence.

At least 60 protesters rallied at the building at 17th Street and Telegraph Avenue around 5:30 p.m., when police were summoned to guard all entrances. But seven protesters found their way inside the building, linked arms and refused to leave, police said.

Officers unsuccessfully negotiated with the group for several hours to leave the building, but they remained there until 9:12 p.m., when one of them voluntarily decided to leave. The remaining six were arrested for trespassing, police said.

The portion of the story where six out of seven are arrested gets a bit more interesting when you find out which one managed to avoid getting the cuffs slapped on. It was their titular leader, Scott Olson, of Iraq Vets Against the War.

A hostage negotiator actually had to be called out in Oakland to talk with seven Occupiers, who refused to leave. Police lost patience and moved in to make the arrests in Oakland around 9 pm last night. Scott Olsen was the only one of the seven not arrested, as they were given a last opportunity to leave and he left.

Well, I’m sure he probably had an important engagement elsewhere.

So what were these “demands” which the groups – including Code Pink – wanted the President to hear? Let’s go to the video.

Our demands are as follows: first, President Obama apologize for the comment he made at the fundraiser in April 2011 regarding PFC Manning’s guilt. Commander in Chief Obama stated, ‘he broke the law’ a sentiment that was later echoed by General Dempsey… this constitutes unlawful command influence, illegal under the Uniform Code of Military Justice…

Second, that President Obama ensure that soldiers are free from illegal pretrial punishment…

We ask that President Obama pardon him on the remaining charges and seek to ensure that international human rights of other service men and women will be respected.

That’s the condensed version and it goes downhill from there rather rapidly. I don’t expect much to come of this, particularly since it’s the Army who is calling the shots on this, not the President, and they’re unlikely to be swayed by such tactics if they are even aware of it. (The idea that Obama would risk the firestorm sure to erupt if he pardoned an accused traitor is beyond even my imagining.)

The only question this might raise is how Obama’s team will respond to continued attacks from his own left flank even as he faces a tougher than expected challenge from America’s Comeback Team. Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right. It makes for an interesting balancing act.

This is agit-prop, we are expected to believe that brave brave Bark is holding off those anarcho-crazies from “helping a traitor”. You are never supposed to look over at Major Hasan, that is where the action is. It also provides cover for when the OWS Special Ed Forces who “hurt Obama” turn their attention on Mitt’s campaign.

The ONLY proper question is, “Mr President since you like ignoring protocol and the rule of law so often in your edicts why haven’t you resolved these two matters?”

Huh? Dumb, and obviously staged by ‘team obama’. Why all of the outrage kabuki? We all know that Manning is already on obama’s ‘pardon list’, along with Nidal Hasan, O. J. Simpson, Zacarias Moussaoui, Scott Peterson, Mumia and many, many more.

I thought OWS was all about the supposed battle between the 99% and the 1%. How does defending a treasonous brat responsible for putting a large number of lives at risk fit in with their class warfare agenda? I guess gutter-dwelling left wing groups can always manage to find common ground in their anti-Americanism.

Frankly, this is a total softball for Obama.

If he speaks out against this group he can make himself look like he’s strongly in favor of prosecuting leakers of classified information. This HELPS him with the White House leakers story, too.

Obama won’t lose any votes by talking tough about Bradley Manning. Only the fringe cares about that scumbag, and they’ll still vote for Obama anyway.

but yeah Bark is running a game of controlling narrative with these idiots.

harlekwin15 on August 18, 2012 at 10:31 AM

As with Clinton and the G-8 protests in Seattle back in 1999, what liberal Democrats who think they’re Masters of the Universe have to keep re-learning is that there are some on the left who aren’t situationally angry, and stage their outrageous outrage simply as PR spin to try and woo swing voters away from the right. They actually believe this stuff, hate America and western civilization in general and will attack anyone they think is not helping to tear it down ast enough, including Barack Obama.

Team Obama, Pelosi and other Democrats last fall thought they could harness the OWS crowd to use against Republicans and their likely nominee in 2012, but discovered to their horror that these people won’t follow orders and protest the politically approved targets only, like Wall Street, the big banks and selected non-complying corporations like the Koch Brothers’ holdings or Walmart. So they’ve tried to lock them up in the attic like the crazy uncle, as big city Democrats have been more forceful in denying protest permits. But Uncle Che keeps escaping and embarrassing them.

Laying the hammer down on these protestors would probably help Team Obama with the moderates. But they can’t afford to get even more on the left mad at them for fighting the power that’s fighting the power that was supposed to fight the power, possibly lowering turn out on Election Day in some swing states. And, from the long-range perspective of those liberals outside the Obama camp, all the OWS types will become useful again in 2013 if Mitt Romney wins the election, so there’s no reason to completely deligiimize them by using the force of (Democrat-controlled) government to shut their protests down.

This is what #Occupy was created to do – to represent a threat and give Obama a reason to impose martial law. It’s beyond agitprop.

If people realized what he has done to this country, they’d be marching in the streets – #Occupy also serves to diffuse and discourage that, both filling the need and turning people off to the idea.

But anyone who thinks they’ve ‘turned’ on Obama is crazy.

These kids today, I’ll tell ya. Hostage negotiator? That’s a bit overwrought. I bet the Obama people suggested it. They could have just sent Mama Space and the elderly gals from her pinochle night in there to pull them out by the ear. Protesting for the “rights of service men and women”?! No wonder attendance was light. That would be a hard sell to your average lefty protest hobbyist. Tsk, these young ‘uns oughta be out doing mash-ups or dub steps or whatever their generation does for fun instead of being cooped up in a stuffy campaign headquarters. And that other item about Hugo Chavez’ fantasy that the US is going after his power stations? That would be his buddy Obama’s doing. If, that is, it had any relation to reality outside Chevez trying to drum up alarm, which tyrants do to hold onto power. And now the Dems are starting to lose the MSM. All kinds of symptoms of backwash from the Left.

Why this pathetic wretch (the inappropriately named Manning, that is, not the President) has not already begun a lengthy sentence in Leavenworth is the unbelievable thing. How long has it been since his arrest, red-handed and everything? For heaven’s sake it’s been, what, two years since Hasan murdered those soldiers at Ft. Hood and they are arguing about his beard. What is it with Court Martials these days?

And they’re laughing at us in Afghanistan too, killing our advisors on a regular basis as the Taliban waits to take over and celebrate victory over the infidels.

Wait a minute, I think I know why. And so do you.

What I want to know is what blithering idiot gave a 19 year old the keys to the nations secrets. We KNOW that young people make mistakes, lots of them due to their inexperience and immature attitude. Which is why we don’t let them buy a handgun. But we will hand them a box with “National Secrets” written on it and claim we had it secured because it was tied with two pieces of string.

Why hasn’t anyone ever commented on the stupidity of giving teenagers the keys to our national survival?

Snake307 on August 18, 2012 at 2:53 PM

A couple ways to answer your question but first I agree with you on an important point. Why did a low-ranking intelligence analyst working in Afghanistan have access to things like State Department Cables (internal documents)? Why were procedures so lax he was able to use a recordable device in a secure area? Why isn’t his chain-of-command facing some sort of penalty for their misconduct.

But to the idea that we shouldn’t trust teens-

We are sending teens into combat. If we deem them to be too immature and inexperienced to lead a squad, then it would be morally wrong to do so. The fact is that there are many young people doing the same job Manning was supposed to be doing who are not traitors. It is a little unfair of you to use such a broad brush for the actions of one limp-wristed punk.

Secondly, and this is just as important, when it comes to intelligence analysis young people often prove quite the asset because they see the world differently than their superiors.
