Team Obama: Tax-return quid pro quo? Team Romney: Not likely.

posted at 12:01 pm on August 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Wow… Team Obama really wants those tax returns. Whether they believe there’s actually something really damning in them (which I highly doubt), or because they know that whatever’s in them they’ll be able to twist into more cheap, populist, class-warmongering appeals (which I highly suspect), they are really hankering for more fodder for their distraction machine.

This morning, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina published an open letter to Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades in which he offered to pull back on the negative tax-related attacks if Romney would release more tax returns.

Dear Matt:

I am writing to ask again that the Governor release multiple years of tax returns, but also to make an offer that should address his concerns about the additional disclosures. Governor Romney apparently fears that the more he offers, the more our campaign will demand that he provide. So I am prepared to provide assurances on just that point: if the Governor will release five years of returns, I commit in turn that we will not criticize him for not releasing more–neither in ads nor in other public communications or commentary for the rest of the campaign. …

Messina went on in a, “really, I’m only being reasonable“-kind of tone, reminding Romney that he’d be following in his father’s tradition and that he’d only need to release three additional years to comply with the terms of the deal. Good grief, Team Obama — so how about those 13 million Americans who are unemployed, hmm?

Team Romney responded, pretty much telling the Obama camp to take their offer and stick it where the sun don’t shine:

Rhoades had this response to the offer: “Hey Jim, thanks for the note. It is clear that President Obama wants nothing more than to talk about Governor Romney’s tax returns instead of the issues that matter to voters, like putting Americans back to work, fixing the economy and reining in spending.” He made no indication of taking up the offer, but added: “If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days.”

But by all means, Team Obama — keep it up. The longer you harp on about tax returns while Romney has made it clear he’s not going to give an inch, the more ridiculous you look (the term “diminishing returns” springs to mind). No serious person thinks Mitt Romney has done anything nefarious or illegal, and if Mitt had offshore bank accounts or paid a low rate or whatever ‘unpatriotic’ activities you’re trying to accuse him of, it’s the fault of our convoluted and adverse-incentivizing tax code. Your desperation to avoid talking big-picture economics and spending is getting painfully transparent.

The frustration for Obama must be almost debilitating to him. For the first time in his life, he’s up against a real campaign and his opponent won’t play possum. Someone telling Obama ‘no’ and sticking to it is entirely out of his experience, while the huge machine at his disposal remains ineffective.

With the tax return issue still going nowhere, I figure next week will be another installment of the war on women theme.

Still, we have privacy laws. And in JTP’s case, an Obama supporter who was a highly placed appointee of Ohio’s Dem governor got fired over the privacy violation–and pretty swiftly, as I recall.

BuckeyeSam on August 17, 2012 at 12:44 PM

They only want the tax returns released so that they can use that information legally.

meci on August 17, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Well, by October ZerObama and his minions won’t give a damn anymore about whether it’s legal or not. They’ll be all-in, and will illegally splash the tax returns all over the LSM.

This is their Waterloo – if they win in Nov, they know the laws will never be applied to them. If they lose, it’s all over for them anyway, so there’s nothing to lose by doing whatever they want.

This.

There is nothing illegal or sordid in them. Romney would be insane to run for President if there was. And he paid income taxes every year just like 50% of the nation does. I bet Romney’s returns are as clean as they come for someone with his net worth and income.

So it is about class warfare, about constantly repeating Romney is “rich”, about trying to make legal tax deductions and credits seem sordid and shady, about trying to make Romney’s wealth appear ill-gotten and at the cost of ordinary Americans, and about taxing capital gains at a lower rate than earned income — pure socialist drivel.

There are also laws against smuggling guns to Mexican drug lords to murder border agents, but somehow they are ignored as long as they serve a greater purpose.

Spider79 on August 17, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Why doesn’t Obama just go all in and unseal his college and draft records (which he, or his team, caused to be sealed) and explain how he ended up with a social security number from a state where he apparently never lived or worked as a good faith bid, then see if Mitt is willing to counter with returns in response? For the record, Mitt has, or will, produce 2 years. For me, under the circumstances with Obama’a total lack of transparency regarding his own life records, that’s more than enough for Mitt to do.

limmo on August 17, 2012 at 1:17 PM

They won’t ask for more. No, they’ll just go over the other three with a fine tooth comb and relentlessly focus on this or that detail and demand an explanation…as if the IRS can’t do it’s job.

This is all about Obama putting and keeping Romney off message and permanently on defense.

Since two years from McCain was fine with Obama, two years should suffice with Romney.

http://www.taxhistory.org/www/website.nsf/Web/PresidentialTaxReturns?OpenDocument

Since 1969, only Obama and Biden gave so many returns – and that was to show their incomes were a lot more modest than McCain’s.

marybel on August 17, 2012 at 1:17 PM

First, a team of accountants led by Acksleshaft has already been to IRS headquarters and gone over Governor Romney’s complete IRS records with a fine-toothed comb.

They didn’t find any blockbusters, because if they did they would have leaked them to the New York Times. They have decided that the only issue they can push is the official release of the returns for political gain.

The beauty of it is that it never ends. If the Governor releases five years, they will say “what is he hiding before 2007?” If he eventually releases all his personal tax returns then they will want Bain’s corporate tax returns, then emails, then tax returns and emails from the companies Bain rescued, then the Romney boys’ tax returns, then the wife, etc, etc. This strategy has no conclusion, by design.

slickwillie2001 on August 17, 2012 at 1:18 PM

I know it’s been repeated ad nauseum, but why not strike a public deal for Obama’s academic transcripts? Just say, “okay, we’ll give you 5 years if you give us ALL your academic transcripts.”

My guess is, Obama changes the subject in a hurry. I’m curious what they downside would be from Romney’s perspective. They’re already calling him a racist that wants to put black people in chains,

BradTank on August 17, 2012 at 1:19 PM

Wow, Romney does seem totally suspicious. He’s always trying to hide something. The only thing he can’t seem to hide well is his spoiled rich kid sensibility.

It’s pathetic to watch him and Ryan try to show their working class cred. Hahaha. What a laugh.

bifidis on August 17, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Low IQ Liberal scum… This election is not going to be about Romney taxes because the majority of voters do not give a damn about this issue in particular that Romney did nothing illegal or else the IRS would be after him. It is not going to be about Bain because a majority of voters understand what does that mean to be a business leader who has to hire and fire people and they understand the most basic concept of profits… In other word the majority of voters do not fall for class warfare and are not socialists/communists like you and your welfare queens agitator Obama.
This elections would be about “Economy and Jobs” and “Obama utterly failed record”. So on November 6 a majority of voters are going to ask themselves this simple but most important question “Do we want four more years of this crap?” and their answer would be “No, hell No“…

mnjg on August 17, 2012 at 1:20 PM

Are we supposed to believe that TurboTax Timmy hasn’t brought Mitt’s tax files over to the White House?

They have. But to release them would be nakedly criminal, and Mitt would have a very easy time pressing charges.

They need him to release them himself so then when they show all the things they want to exploit, they won’t have the issue of having to say how they found out.

Parenthetically, if they actually found anything that was illegal in there, the IRS could go ahead and go after Mitt. They haven’t. So we already know everything we need to, here. They checked him out, illegally, and found no crimes, but lots of useable class warfare fodder. And they can’t do anything with it until Mitt lets them. Heh.

Next letter should say, “hey, tell you what — we’ll trade 3 years for the college transcripts.” …crickets… crickets… crickets…

Seriously, why doesn’t Obama expose his own records as a point of good faith? Then, Romney can decide where to go from there. Personally, again, I think 2 years is far enough for Mitt. We know he built a successful business. We know he’s rich. We know he filed and paid what he owed, or didn’t owe according to tax law. We think Harry Reid is probably a sleazy provocateur. We know he had nothing to do with that guy’s wife’s cancer death. But we don’t know why, according to Maranass(sp?), Obama put at about 32 falsehoods in his autobiography, or why he’s got a social security number which seems to be from a state where he never worked or lived, or what kind of scholarships he got, or didn’t get, at University. Aren’t all those Obama missing life-links more interesting that more of the same tax returns?

After all we know, we’re aware that Mitt believes in the private sector and would be good at generating an environment to put people back to work there, expanding the tax base and reducing the need for increased taxes on anyone! That’s really all I need to know or believe.

Should say, let me know when tax returns get a border agent killed and we’ll talk about who’s hiding what.

Wagthatdog on August 17, 2012 at 1:52 PM

How come talking heads do not understand the difference between interest, which is taxed at ordinary income rate, vs capital gain tax and dividend, which involves investing in business and has risk of loss and therefore taxed at a preferential rate?

And that interest, dividend or capital gain stems from investing money that had already been taxed once as ordinary income.

Dividend comes from business profits that was taxed once as corporate tax right off the top, and the preferential rate is imposed on the shareholders as a double taxation when the profit was distributed.

bayview on August 17, 2012 at 1:52 PM

Happy Nomad on August 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM

Mitt should do a commercial releaseing the Tax returns of those who are unemployed due to Obamas economy.

mechkiller_k on August 17, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Not tech/social media savvy, but we should start a Tumblr page similar to the 53-percenters and have people post their tax returns – or stories of how their earnings have dropped during this administration.

A page with Pre-Obama income vs. Post-Obama income would suffice.

forget 0bama’s transcripts. no one that voted for him last time is going to change because he got C’s or D’s in college. the effectiveness of that info has expired.

After seeing this moron in action for the last four years, I don’t need to see anything else to prove how stupid he is. His grades are probably fake anyway, either from AA or cheating.

Night Owl on August 17, 2012 at 2:06 PM

When will we question why Obama doesn’t pay a lower rate? What does he have against investing in America?

Wagthatdog on August 17, 2012 at 2:07 PM

Romney’s money has been in a blind trust to avoid conflict of interest since he was governor. How much more does he have to do? I am not in favor of any more tax returns for looking for spurious issues. For one thing, the dems are too stupid to read tax returns, they just look for hot buzz words they can make hay over.

They certainly did not look over John Edwards fundraising and tax returns closely enough, and gave John Kerry a pass because he did not actually earn Theresa’s money, he just enjoys it as “one of the family.” Remember, he didn’t own any of the families many SUV’s that were used to drive people to the airport at the vacation homes…you know…like they belonged to the Resort, for anyone to use.

There are a lot of things I would trade the tax returns for, and I am not in favor of it, but tempting to me would be to see Obama’s MATH SAT score. I noticed his eyes glazed over when Paul Ryan spoke about cutting budgets in that old video that is making the rounds since last week.

Hey Iran get rid of half your nuclear weapons and we won’t send a strongly worded letter.

ldbgcoleman on August 17, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Obama is currently running an ad based on the 2010 return that states Romney “made more than $20 million and he only paid 14.5% tax rate. Now he wants to lower the tax he pays even more while raising taxes on the middle class.”

Seriously — besides the fact that ad makes it seem like the sole reason Romney wants to be POTUS is to lower his own tax rate, there is no mention that given that Romney’s income is entirely capital gains his max tax rate is 15% (per Bill Clinton’s changes to the tax code, btw). No mention that with the amount he gave to charity in 2010, his tax rate could have even been lower, but because of the draconian tax code he ended up paying taxes on $1 million in “phantom income” (i.e., money he didn’t actually receive). Obama realizes his supporters are low information who probably don’t even file income taxes, so he can lie by omission with impunity — none of them would know the difference. And, of course, beside the lying by distorting things in the tax returns they do have, they’ve also called him a felon and a murderer. I wouldn’t give those cretins the time of day, much less more tax returns.

I’m so happy that Romney is telling them to go eff themselves over this.

Dark Star on August 17, 2012 at 2:18 PM

Go check out zeros 2010 tax return he made over 1M in foreign investments, origin of countries various?? Buys a lots of treasury notes too.
As usual good for me but not for thee.

concernedsenior on August 17, 2012 at 2:19 PM

One other comment comes to mind.

This was an open letter. Open letters are never really intended to be more than propaganda. Correspondence from one campaign manager to another sent privately might be legitimate discussion of how the campaigns deal with one another. An “open” letter is only designed so that Obama’s minions can talk about how Romney refuses to do the very reasonable thing that would clear the whole matter up and ensure a tone of civility to the campaign.

The really sad part is the number of Republicans out there that are buying into this crap that all Romney has to do is release his tax returns and it will shut up Obama’s people.

Happy Nomad on August 17, 2012 at 2:23 PM

You know, a person would think obama has some unsavory secret in his past that he’s hiding. You don’t spend millions of dollars sealing every record you have if there’s nothing unpleasant there. Why did obama change his name from “Barry Soetero”? Why does he have more than one social security number? The questions just keep coming. And obama has the gall to demand Romney’s tax returns?

Only a bunch of con pundits (hacks), but who care what they think, bottom line is he will never release them..

Sounds fair to me: A lifetime of Obama’s tax returns equal about a week’s worth of Romney’s.

Akzed on August 17, 2012 at 3:00 PM

limmo on August 17, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Obama? “Good faith”? Obama couldn’t find his “good faith” with an electron microscope.

The Obama Team negotiates with The Romney Team just like the Fleebagger Team negotiated with Scott Walker, and we all know how well that turned out for the the Fleebaggers.

how about your tenth grade report card and some Prom pics?

PaleoRider on August 17, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Wow, Romney does seem totally suspicious. He’s always trying to hide something. The only thing he can’t seem to hide well is his spoiled rich kid sensibility.

It’s pathetic to watch him and Ryan try to show their working class cred. Hahaha. What a laugh.

Uh…. this wasn’t an impression?

kim roy on August 17, 2012 at 4:25 PM

They were originally asking for ten years, now they say they’ll settle for five. First rule of negotiations: the party who makes the first concession loses. Obama’s efforts at this are toast; Romney wins this round.

Good post. Almost feel sorry for the Obama Camp.

And then I remembered they are destroying America with their ineptitude.

And then I chortle.

Your desperation to avoid talking big-picture economics and spending is getting painfully transparent.

Or is it? Obama is ahead in the horserace polls by 3.9% according to John McIntyre’s and Tom Bevan’s RCP website:-) Heck — how many CONSERVATIVES take Mitt Romney and his political convictions seriously? They only tolerate him because they hate Barack Hussein Obama.

As Glenn Reynolds stated back in 2004, you cannot beat something with nothing. And the current Republican party is utterly bankrupt.

I think anyone who has lost money during 0′s tenure should send the Romney campaign their tax returns. Mitt could stack them up next to the white board for effect.
