Team Obama: Tax-return quid pro quo? Team Romney: Not likely.

posted at 12:01 pm on August 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Wow… Team Obama really wants those tax returns. Whether they believe there’s actually something really damning in them (which I highly doubt), or because they know that whatever’s in them they’ll be able to twist into more cheap, populist, class-warmongering appeals (which I highly suspect), they are really hankering for more fodder for their distraction machine.

This morning, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina published an open letter to Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades in which he offered to pull back on the negative tax-related attacks if Romney would release more tax returns.

Dear Matt:

I am writing to ask again that the Governor release multiple years of tax returns, but also to make an offer that should address his concerns about the additional disclosures. Governor Romney apparently fears that the more he offers, the more our campaign will demand that he provide. So I am prepared to provide assurances on just that point: if the Governor will release five years of returns, I commit in turn that we will not criticize him for not releasing more–neither in ads nor in other public communications or commentary for the rest of the campaign. …

Messina went on in a, “really, I’m only being reasonable“-kind of tone, reminding Romney that he’d be following in his father’s tradition and that he’d only need to release three additional years to comply with the terms of the deal. Good grief, Team Obama — so how about those 13 million Americans who are unemployed, hmm?

Team Romney responded, pretty much telling the Obama camp to take their offer and stick it where the sun don’t shine:

Rhoades had this response to the offer: “Hey Jim, thanks for the note. It is clear that President Obama wants nothing more than to talk about Governor Romney’s tax returns instead of the issues that matter to voters, like putting Americans back to work, fixing the economy and reining in spending.” He made no indication of taking up the offer, but added: “If Governor Romney’s tax returns are the core message of your campaign, there will be ample time for President Obama to discuss them over the next 81 days.”

But by all means, Team Obama — keep it up. The longer you harp on about tax returns while Romney has made it clear he’s not going to give an inch, the more ridiculous you look (the term “diminishing returns” springs to mind). No serious person thinks Mitt Romney has done anything nefarious or illegal, and if Mitt had offshore bank accounts or paid a low rate or whatever ‘unpatriotic’ activities you’re trying to accuse him of, it’s the fault of our convoluted and adverse-incentivizing tax code. Your desperation to avoid talking big-picture economics and spending is getting painfully transparent.

WOW! Liberal scumbuckets more worried about how much money a person earned, and how much taxes that person paid, than what’s wrong with the country and how to fix it. As if it’s any of their or anyone else’s business anway. But when the Marxist in Chief launders taxpayers money through Solyndra and other such companies to his buddies and his campaign, well now that’s no big deal. No big deal either to flaunt bankruptcy laws to the tune of billions of dollars of taxpayer money in order to payoff the auto unions in the GM and Chrysler bailouts. I guess there is nothing a liberal scumbucket POS won’t resort to in order to steal other peoples money.

Of course, nothing in this offer says that Obama’s Super PAC can’t go on the warpath about the fact that Romney didn’t release more than five years worth of returns. And Messina and the Obama campaign will innocently reply, “we can’t coordinate with the Super PAC and therefore can’t ask them to stop running these ads”.

Has the Obama campaign now resorted to having to dredge up old diversions at this point, I mean are they all out of fresh ideas to stall discussion of his failed first term? Does anyone outside of the Obama campaign even care about Romney’s tax records? Romney has paid more in taxes the last 10 years than most Americans will pay in a lifetime so what’s the point other than having to debate actual issues facing this nation?

NO REASON ! NONE !

pambi on August 17, 2012 at 12:18 PM

Romney could say that he’ll provide 5 years of tax returns, if Obama agrees to drop his executive privilege claim on the fast and furious documents and provide them to the satisfaction of Issa. How would that make the One look when he says no? It would also make Romney look like he’s sacrificing for open govt. and justice…arguably. If the One says yes….then bring the scandal on.

I would be a bit wary though. It seems that the Obama campaign has a lot of attacks prepared surrounding Romney’s tax returns….they are itching to get at those things.

FreeManOtis on August 17, 2012 at 12:19 PM

Obama’s campaign can keep its promise and the super PACs can stick to it, too. They still have their MSM lapdogs make the stink, all for free.

PaleoRider on August 17, 2012 at 12:26 PM

Ocommie should be emphasizing the fact that if government got out of the way of businesses, especially small ones, reformed the tax code, stopped trying to socialize everything under the sun, Americans who currently are unemployed or earn very little would have a better chance of making the same kind of income that would cause them to have to pay bigger tax bills like Romney has.

It’s envy, pure and simple. Not an admirable trait in anyone regardless of what side of the isle they vote for. People should be applauding the fact that there are still people that make enough money that using every bit of the tax code to lower their tax liability to 14%-15% still means they pay millions in taxes. Instead they would much rather sit on their swollen thumbs and collect unemployment and welfare, then disability when unemployment runs out.

It’s shameful, disgraceful. The more they take from the government in exchange for their liberty the louder they yell for those who aren’t terminally lazy to pay more.

…and liberals see nothing wrong with this.

How about having Obama explain why he claimed that a clearly fraudulent, clearly manufactured, composite forgery is a scan of his Birth Certificate?

It’s pathetic to watch him and Ryan try to show their working class cred. Hahaha. What a laugh.

What you fail to realize (apart from what women find repugnant about you) is that I could not care less about their “working class cred.” I LOVE the fact that Mitt is fabulously wealthy. It gives me great joy that this guy is swimming in money. I’d love nothing more that to see him go on live TV and light a big fat cigar with a burning $100 bill.

I bet Jim Messina could suck a golfball through a garden hose.
