Report: Secret Service thanked baker after he refused to host Biden over O’s “you didn’t build that” remark

posted at 4:56 pm on August 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

Joel Gehrke of the Examiner calls it a “startling” bit of news. I agree; the same passage jumped out at me when we headlines the WDBJ story this morning. But does it really say what we all think it says? Quote:

Why in the world would a new business owner say “no” to a photo op with the Vice President of the United States?

McMurray said it was President Obama’s recent remarks about small business and who built what.

“Very simply, ‘you didn’t build that’” McMurray said. “Speaking of small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she’s worked a full 24 hours.”

Then, several paragraphs later:

Here’s the back story, we’re told that shortly after Crumb and Get It told Biden’s advance people ‘no’ — the secret service walked in and told Chris McMurray ”Thanks for standing up and saying ‘no’ — then they bought a whole bunch of cookies and cupcakes.

The “standing up” bit sure does make it sound like they were thanking McMurray because they agreed with his objection to Obama’s “you didn’t build that” rhetoric. But I’m not sure: Click the image below and watch the clip at the link. Reporter Orlando Salinas doesn’t say anything about “standing up” in the video, only that the agents thanked McMurray for saying no and bought some stuff, which leaves their motive more ambiguous. Could be that they were just hoping to avoid the logistical hassle of having to secure the bakery and surrounding area before Biden arrived and thought that Biden’s advance team might skip the stop altogether once the first business owner turned him down. (Didn’t work out that way.) Would a small group of Secret Service agents really risk the White House’s wrath by saying something politically unhelpful like this? This isn’t a case of one random agent out of the hundreds employed by the Service phoning a reporter to badmouth O anonymously. This is Biden’s own security team; the White House knows who they are, and they’re surely in no mood for new political headaches from the Service after the “unpleasantness” in Colombia. Seems hard to believe the agents would tempt fate by gladhanding an Obama critic in that environment. High risk, little reward. But I don’t know, anything’s possible.

Exit question via Dan Foster: This isn’t a landlord/tenant dispute, is it?

Honestly, I don’t even care about that. What I am pleased to hear is that this story went viral and business was booming today at the dude’s shop. The Secret Service agents had to know that the White House would know who they were in any case, so, even if they only said “Thanks for saying no” they should have been smart enough to know that it still would end up causing an uproar.

I’d love to think that THOSE guys ‘stood up’.

This I really doubt because I have never heard of the Secret Service ever saying this to a business. They have to secure numerous locales that I am sure are far more onerous than this one.

My guess is that the Dems in the WH treat them like dirt, similar to the Clinton stories that were told.

Here are snippets from a book of “Impressions & Observations” of Secret Service personnel assigned to guard U.S. Presidents/First Ladies, and Vice Presidents.
JOHN & JACQUELINE KENNEDY
*A philanderer of the highest order. *
*She ordered the kitchen help to save all the left-over wine during State dinner, mixed with fresh wine and served again during the next White House occasion.*
*LYNDON & LADYBIRD JOHNSON
*Another philanderer of the highest order. In addition, LBJ was as crude as the day is long. Both JFK and LBJ kept a lot of women in the White House for extramarital affairs,
> and both had set up “early warning systems” to alert them if/when their wives were nearby. Both Kennedy & Johnson were promiscuous and oversexed men. *
>> *She was either naive or just pretended to “not know” about her husband’s many liaisons. *
>> *RICHARD & PAT NIXON
>> *A “moral” man but very odd, weird, paranoid, etc. He had horrible relationship with his family, and in a way, was almost a recluse.*
>> *She was quiet most of the time.*
>> *SPIRO AGNEW
>> * Nice, decent man, everyone in the Secret Service was surprised about his downfall. *
>>
>> *GERALD & BETTY FORD
>> *A true gentlemen who treated the Secret Service with respect and dignity. He had a great sense of humor. *
>> *She drank a lot!*
>> *JIMMY & ROSALYN CARTER
>> *A complete phony who would portray one picture of himself to public and very different in private, e..g., would be shown carrying his own luggage, but the suit cases were always empty; he kept empty ones just for photo op’s. Wanted the people to see him as pious and a non-drinker, but he and his family drank alcohol a lot.
> He had disdain for the Secret Service, and was very irresponsible with the “football” nuclear codes. He didn’t think it was a big deal and would keep military aides at a great distance.
> Often did not acknowledge the presence of Secret Service personnel assigned to serve him.*
>> *She mostly did her own thing.*

Wow. Biden is more of a jerk than I realized.

While the arrangement is rare, Secret Service agents apparently rented property from the Clintons in Chappaqua, N.Y., a decade ago — however, the Clintons reportedly declined to accept payment from the Secret Service at the time.

INC on August 16, 2012 at 5:06 PM

>> *RONALD & NANCY REAGAN
>> *The real deal — moral, honest, respectful, and dignified. They treated Secret Service and everyone else with respect and honor. Thanked everyone all the time.
> He took the time to know everyone on a personal level. * One “favorite” story which has circulated among the Secret Service personnel was an incident early in his Presidency, when he came out of his room with a pistol tucked on his hip. The agent in charge asked: “Why the pistol, Mr. President” He replied, “In case you boys can’t get the job done, I can help.
> ” It was common for him to carry a pistol. When he met with Gorbachev, he had a pistol in his briefcase. Upon learning that Gary Hart was caught with Donna Rice, Reagan said, “Boys will be boys, but boys will not be Presidents.” [He obviously either did not know or forgot JFK's and LBJ's sexcapades!]*
>> *She was very nice but very protective of the President; and the Secret Service was often caught in the middle. She tried hard to control what the President ate, and he would say to the agent “Come on, you gotta help me out.” The Reagans drank wine during State dinners and special occasions only; otherwise, they shunned alcohol; the Secret Service could count on one hand the times they were served wine during their “family dinner”. For all the fake bluster of the Carters, the Reagans were the ones who lived life as genuinely moral people.*
>> *GEORGE H. & BARBARA BUSH
>> *Extremely kind and considerate Always respectful. Took great care in making sure the agents’ comforts were taken care of. They even brought them meals, etc. One time Barbara Bush brought warm clothes to agents standing outside at Kennebunkport; one agent was given a warm hat, and when he tried to nicely say “no thanks” even though he was obviously freezing, President Bush said “Son, don’t argue with the First Lady, put the hat on.” He was the most prompt of the Presidents. He ran the White House like a well-oiled machine.*
>> *She ruled the house and spoke her mind.*

VorDaj on August 16, 2012 at 5:06 PM

I think Mr. Gehrke got it wrong. I doubt very much any Secret Service agent would voice such political sentiment publicly.

>> *Presidency was one giant party. Not trustworthy — he was nice because he wanted everyone to like him, but to him life is just one big game and party. Everyone knows of his sexuality.*
>> *She is another phony. Her personality would change the instant cameras were near. She hated with open disdain the military and Secret Service. She was another one who felt people are there to serve her. She was always trying to keep tabs on Bill Clinton.*
>>
>> *ALBERT GORE*
>> An egotistical a-s-s, who was once overheard by his Secret Service detail lecturing his only son that he needed to do better in school or he “would end up like these guys” — pointing to the agents.*
>> *GEORGE W. & LAURA BUSH
>> *The Secret Service loved him and Laura Bush. He was also the most physically “in shape” who had a very strict workout regimen. The Bushes made sure their entire administrative and household staff understood to respect and be considerate of the Secret Service.
>> *She was one of the nicest First Ladies, if not the nicest; she never had any harsh word to say about anyone.*
>> *KARL ROVE was the one who was the most caring of the Secret Service in the administration.*
>> *BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA
>> *” Clinton all over again” – hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. He is egotistical and cunning; looks you in the eye and appears to agree with you, but turns around and does the opposite—untrustworthy. He has temper tantrums.*

Against individualism, the progressive Obama conception is for the progressive State; and it is for the individual only in so far as he coincides with the progressive State. Obama conceives of the progressive State as an absolute, in comparison with which all individuals or groups are relative, only to be conceived in their relation to the progressive State. The Obama conception of the progressive State is all-embracing; outside of it no human or spiritual values can exist, much less have value.

Who knows what the agents were thinking when they bought the goodies. You can take that anyway you want. I personally think if they were miffed they would not have bought anything but even if they did say thanks for standing up for Americans that work hard and earn their living, I wouldn’t have blabbed it to a reporter because after all, why make them a target of the Chicago mafia?

I read it as “thanks for sparing us a logistical hassle.”

Even offhandedly talking out into the air, (which agents are generally not prone to do anyway), most disciplined saavy usss are not going to say something like that where it could easily be construed as partisan, especially while on the clock.

If George lived in the US, everything would be dandy because he would be subsidized by the taxpayers like Auntie Z. There’s no way BO is going to dig into his own pockets for anything – not even family. Perhaps George has an ideological difference with BO w/r to coloniaism, but BO&MO are the ultimate welfare entitlement types – they are parasites who live off of the hard work of others and feel they are entitled. That, to me, seems to be the critical difference of opinion if one exists.

I doubt that.

I saw articles about this before and the SS saved money renting this Cottage and $2200 was reasonable for that area.

Biden is not all that rich. I disagree with him politically on about everything but I guess he was one of the few Democrats that went to Washington DC and did not come back rich. Not I am not saying he is poor a Senator makes too much for that to be the case but not surprised he is not letting them use the cottage for free.

More likely if this is blowback it is for the leaks. I would imagine the SS is very upset about those leaks especially if we have lost people because of them. These deaths are seldom made public so we have no idea if this has or has not happened.

The “standing up” bit sure does make it sound like they were thanking McMurray because they agreed with his objection to Obama’s “you didn’t build that” rhetoric. But I’m not sure

I suspect the SS agents thanked him for standing up for HIMSELF. They respect that. They don’t want to roll over people. This is America, so people should feel free to stand up for themselves, even against the President. My take is the SS agents were relishing the chance to be magnanimous and conciliatory, which they rarely get to do.

Paul-Cincy on August 16, 2012 at 5:49 PM

I think the secret Service were just being professional in thanking the owner for considering the proposal. I doubt they did any thanking of the owner for saying no. There’s way too much incompetent inferring/implying going on to score this as accurate especially since there’s always the pressure for the media to spice things up.

There were two more in that video story alone. The first where the reporter on the street suggests these turn downs happen frequently, when there’s absolutely no evidence to suggest it. The second where the set reporter implies people who do this lose business because of the they refuse for political reasons. And she had the infirmity of doing it after two kids in the shop said it wouldn’t.

Dusty on August 16, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Gotta respect the secret service guys who have the cast iron stomach to do their jobs and still protect this narcissist in chief and his witless stooge of a veep – no matter how much they throw up in their mouthes in the process

theflyonthewall on August 16, 2012 at 5:51 PM

That was the era of my bro-in-law’s service. He said Clenis was the only one of the four he served that was at least trying to be respectful of their work while in their company. Hillary, Al and Tipper treated them like wait staff.

He lived long enough to see Bush elected and has an entrance at one of the bases that is used to shuttle between Marine 1 and the WH named for him just after 9/11.

DanMan on August 16, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Yeah, the stories have been out there for a while. I know a guy who was assigned to Carter’s SS detail. He hated it, would have gladly taken a bullet for Reagan, but putting up with Carter’s Pali love was the final straw…. he retired.

Cody1991 on August 16, 2012 at 5:51 PM

It’s been 24 hours since Chris McMurray said “no” to a photo op with Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

And his Radford bakery, “Crumb and Get It” has been slammed ever since.

“Crumb and Get It” was so busy Thursday they had to close their doors at 1:15 p.m. because they ran out of food.

Giggity.

FlatFoot on August 16, 2012 at 5:52 PM

If George lived in the US, everything would be dandy because he would be subsidized by the taxpayers like Auntie Z.

Cody1991 on August 16, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Speaking of Aahntie Zucchini and, for that matter, Uncle Onyango Obama, did you notice that George applied for a visa to the United States in 2010 and was declined?

PS: Imagine the positive effects Unk might have had on Barry if he had only been named “Oingo Boingo Obama”!!!

What a wonderful world this could be…

Interesting. No, I didn’t know George tried to get to the US. Ah, well. There are only so many embarrassing relatives that any president can handle. Even BO might have a limit. Carter’s and the Clinton’s were a bit more problematic since they were already US citizens.

Cody1991 on August 16, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Would a small group of Secret Service agents really risk the White House’s wrath by saying something politically unhelpful like this?

Yes. It strains the mind to think that Secret Service agents would do anything improper that might publicly embarrass the President. These guys are professionals, they aren’t going to throw their careers away over fifty dollars worth of … erm, cupcakes.

Maybe Biden is as much of a loud, obnoxious a-hole in private as he is in public, and they are finally cracking under the stress of being around the guy all the time for the last three years.

Seriously, think about it. Three years of being around Joe Biden, day-in, day-out. Imagine the monologues and the lame jokes these poor agents have been subjected to for three years now. And who was the last guy that they guarded? The quiet and professional Dick Cheney. I really can’t blame them for trying to get some small measure of revenge against Biden, they probably didn’t think the press would find out.

So in the real world not every Republican is a great person and every Democrat a horrible person so I’m going to guess that those excerpts were written by someone with an obvious political lean, I’m not buying that every Republican family was an absolute wonder to work with and every Democrat was an abosolute horror. Life doesnt work like that.

Politricks on August 16, 2012 at 6:05 PM

itsspideyman, Dirt McGirt

I see alot of people at this site throw the “troll” label around.

From what I understand, the definition of a troll is..

“In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4]”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

Around here it seems to just mean “someone who has an different opinion than the popular one”

Politricks on August 16, 2012 at 6:08 PM

I wonder how happy the Secret Service is after the South American scandal.

BKeyser on August 16, 2012 at 6:08 PM

Can you imagine how the SS agents feel, having to guard an idiot. AND all his pandering political sycophants? Even if they associate with prostitutes, SS agents have standards of decency. At least prostitutes are HONEST about what they do for a living.

GarandFan on August 16, 2012 at 6:12 PM

We can all make wild assumptions, maybe they said Thank you because they were tired and wanted to go home, maybe they said Thank you because they personally hated the lighting in the building and it was giving them a headache, maybe they said thank you because they had a phone call that they really needed to make, or a game they really wanted to get too, maybe they said thank you because their feet were hurting.

I dont really get this post.

If they really said “Thank you for STANDING UP and saying no” why wouldnt they simply stand up THEMSELVES and quit. I would think a secret service man/woman would have the moral fortitude to not participate in any activity that they felt was beneath them and have to depend on others to show defiance that they themselves couldnt. I look at it as, if this agent really felt that way then why not just quit the service on moral grounds, its not like the military right? There’s no going awol or anything I dont think…

J.E. Dyer on August 16, 2012 at 6:25 PM

We already know the Secret Service gets off on high risk behavior, so who’s to say Biden’s security detail wouldn’t bad mouth their own guy just for the thrill?

NealK on August 16, 2012 at 6:26 PM

I really can’t blame them for trying to get some small measure of revenge against Biden, they probably didn’t think the press would find out.

If it is true — and it sounds just a little too good to be true, but if it is — then the shop owner should have kept his mouth shut about the remark and not blabbed it to the press. I know he was probably enthusiastic, but not very cool to bring a crapstorm down on the SS agents.

OK. This situation has way more information than I want to process and collate and decide on.

As I said, I don’t have any advertising on my blog nor do I make a single penny from it. I was merely offering it as a place for HA regulars to meet BECAUSE NEARLY ALL OF THEM HAVE SAID THAT THEY WILL LEAVE HA IF FB REGISTRATION BECOMES MANDATORY IN ORDER TO COMMENT ON THIS SITE.

[blah blah blah]

If you consider that poaching, then I’m guilty as charged.

Resist We Much on August 16, 2012 at 12:08 AM

I understand poaching to be poaching members, whether or not money is involved. You host, you’re substituting your authority for Ed’s and AP’s in making admin decisions, and admin decisions will be made on membership issues. Your interest beyond money, I don’t know enough about you.

As I consider myself a HotGasian, I understand you wanting to keep the HotGas atmosphere as it is. I enjoy the interactions here. I’d only post via facebook using a fake name, if I had to.

You want to be Prince Charming on the white horse, well, there’s more to it than that. It took hard work to form the HotGas community. My attitude is, you don’t like how it’s being run, then start your own like they did, from scratch, or join one that’s more to your liking. There’s a creeping feeling of dread among the admins when a membership talks about moving to another platform. Why do that to Ed and AP? Have they treated you unfairly?

Paul-Cincy on August 16, 2012 at 6:29 PM

If I weren’t completely overwhelmed with my family, family business, and household to-do list, I’d literally like to send this baker some sprinkles and a kind note.

Jackalope on August 16, 2012 at 6:31 PM

OT, but my ghast has been flabbered over this:

“MSNBC’s Touré: Romney Engaging In The ‘Niggerization’ Of Obama”

Guess it shouldn’t surprise me, but this is nasty !

pambi on August 16, 2012 at 6:31 PM

Too bad none of them have the guts to expose it now when it counts the most.

Baxter Greene on August 16, 2012 at 5:33 PM

I strongly disagree.

It is important that a president, even an obnoxious and incompetent president, can depend on people to keep their mouths shut; the office of president would be unworkable if staff took it upon themselves to broadcast opinions of the president and his daily deeds.

Quite apart from the national security implications, the job is stressful and since presidents are mortal it would be unreasonable to expect them all to maintain a perfect personality all the time.

The job of holding a president to account, falls to other politicians, to journalists and to regular citizens, whereas the job of the WH staff is to make sure that the president has whatever he needs to do his job.

YiZhangZhe on August 16, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Maybe the road network around the bakery location was tricksy and they were concerned that Biden’s motorcade would kill for the third(?) time.

rayra on August 16, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Reporter Orlando Salinas doesn’t say anything about “standing up” in the video

And that’s a surprise?

98ZJUSMC on August 16, 2012 at 6:38 PM

It is a win win for the baker, he lives up to his own standard, gains massive conservative customer base and his customers will be clean and respectful (and have jobs)

Would you rather have OWSers shop at your store or tea partiers?

It’s a no brainer.
