ABC’s Jake Tapper: Obama “disses White House press corps” with People, ET interviews

posted at 12:01 pm on August 16, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

I wrote about this earlier, when Joe Scarborough and his panel made fun of Barack Obama’s lack of intestinal fortitude with the White House press corps.  ABC’s Jake Tapper and Mary Bruce aren’t laughing.  In a detailed account of Obama’s distance from reporters on the White House beat, Tapper says that his interviews with entertainment reporters from People and Entertainment Tonight “disses” White House correspondents:

President Obama hasn’t formally taken questions from the White House press corps in more than two months, while on the campaign trail in Iowa yesterday he made time for reporters from People Magazine and Entertainment Tonight.

His last news conference was at the G20 in June, when he answered six questions from three reporters on the European debt crisis, the conflict in Syria, and the notion of politics stopping at the water’s edge.

The White House press corps has not formally been given the opportunity to ask questions of the president on U.S. soil since his appearance in the Briefing Room on June 8 (when he said “the private sector is doing fine.“)

His last formal White House news conference was on March 6.

Tapper asked Jay Carney when Obama plans to get around to talking with reporters from actual news agencies.  Carney’s answer?  “I don’t have any scheduling announcements to make.”

Actually, I’m mystified by the distance that Obama has put between himself and the White House press corps.  They’ve treated Obama with a lot more deference than George W. Bush got.  Even the tough questions don’t usually get follow-ups, and Obama has more or less mastered the art of filibustering to limit the number of questions asked at these events.  Why not do more press avails and pressers?  Why not arrange an interview with at least a more sympathetic member of the non-entertainment media, such as Brian Williams of NBC, if not a member of the press corps?

It seems like an odd time to antagonize the media closest to the White House — and if Jake Tapper is a measure of the resentment building within the briefing room, the incumbent struggling to make a case for a second term might find more skepticism for those arguments than ever.

Update: Maybe Obama’s afraid of questions like this:

Ouch.

bflat879 on August 16, 2012 at 1:07 PM

It’s not just conservatives who believe the big media is liberal and biased towards the Democrats. It’s also what Democrats themselves believe about the media. But the problem is that while conservative Republican candidates go into any race (unless they’re a doofus like John McCain) knowing they’re going to get negative press coverage, people like Barack Obama, or Bill Clinton before him, or Jimmy Carter before him, or Lyndon Johnson before him, go in expecting the media to be part of the team, in getting their message out and deflecting any negative news.

That’s why Obama’s mad. He expected the media to be in 100 percent lapdog mode, and the fact that they’re only in the 80-90 percentile angers him to no end. Add to that it’s been obvious he can’t take any criticism at all since he went off on Maureen Dowd back in December 2006 about his big ears, and you end up with a man who came into office not just expecting unquestioning media backing, but gets irate at even the mildest critique. If people like Tapper keep refusing to go into full Chris Matthews/Michael Tomasky mode, Obama’s going to be like the teacher who punishes all the kids in class because one or two of them can’t stop misbehaving.

Obama’s Media Machine: State Run Media 2.0? – Feb. 15, 2011

…”The administration has narrowed access by the mainstream media to an unprecedented extent,” said ABC News White House correspondent Ann Compton, who has covered seven administrations. “Access here has shriveled.”

Press ‘constantly’ pushing for more access to Barack Obama – May 20, 2011

A frustrated White House Press Corps chief says her members are “constantly fighting” for more access to the media-elusive President Obama — who hasn’t fielded questions from reporters since early April, despite an onslaught of major events, from the “birther” controversy and spiking gas prices to the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

Heavy-handed dealings with the press, limited access and strong efforts at message control are emerging as patterns in the Obama White House, journalists and media watchers say.

No Journalist in history has ever been given so many national scandals to investigate and has so utterly failed to ask a question of any significance.

If Obama disses Tapper, good! What has Jake Tapper done that makes Jake Tapper think the President would respect him?

His tough questions on Fast and Furious?
His tough questions on misspent Billions in Stimulus? In Green Energy? In GM?
His tough questions on Accounting Gimmicks, Illegal Alien benefits or Senatorial Bribes in Obamacare?
His tough questions on the deficit? The debt?
His tough questions on the character assassination of Palin? The Tea Party? Mitt Romney? Paul Ryan?

Jake Tapper IS the problem…his quarterly attempts at feigned journalism do not mask his persistent un-curiosity of Obama scandals.

Arguably, the biggest story of the last 4 years the blatant corruption of the White House Press Corps as a Media Institution.

Afterseven on August 16, 2012 at 1:38 PM

Obama has more or less mastered the art of filibustering to limit the number of questions asked at these events.

Obama can talk for an hour and say nothing. Do you have to be a graduate of an Ivy league school to understand what he’s saying? Because if Obama’s filibustering is what passes for wisdom these days, you can have it. You can have his vaunted “speech on race” too. Why doesn’t he just simply and plainly and briefly answer questions put to him?

If he says something and you believe it, after all the things he’s said and then reversed, then you’re a fool.

Paul-Cincy on August 16, 2012 at 1:39 PM

Tapper sounds like a mistress who doesn’t feel she’s getting her ‘fair share’ of attention. But what can a mistress expect from a guy who’s a self-centered cheat at everything he does?

Obama can pee on their shoes and the WH press corps will still come running when he whistles. If Tapper and his ilk wait a little longer, their precious Obama will be screaming for them when his poll numbers take a big enough hit.

In the meantime, to keep the press corps busy while they wait for O’s next sermon/lecture, there’s this little story I heard about some gay black guy trying to shoot up a Christian organization. They could surely provide better, more professional coverage on that if they’re so bored with waiting for their precious Chicago Jesus to pay them some mind.

What kind of wuss won’t even face a press that is practically campaigning for him? What does that say about Obama? It’s not like they’re going to ask him anything but puffballs. I’m seeing a pattern here with these Democrats. Don’t talk to the press because that will give the right ammunition to use against you. With Reid it’s don’t pass a budget for 3 years so that you can criticize Ryan’s budget plan and not stand on anything you’ve done because you’ve done NOTHING. If this is the Chicago way then I feel really sorry for folks living there. People Mag and ET are perfect for President Kardashian. Dr. Carlo Lombardi on August 16, 2012 at 3:12 PM

Well, when you spent the last year and a half on the campaign trail, you’re never in Washington. Maybe the press corps need to address this. How can a President get anything done, when he’s always away? I guess that explains his voting record in Chicago when he was a Representative – present (sent from his iPAD).

FTFY

Never forget that in the 1960 campaign the press put Nixon under hot lights and put Kennedy on the cool side of the stage during the debates to make Nixon look like he was sweating because he was in the hot seat. Also Daley “found” the votes for Kennedy in (no surprise) Chicago. Does anyone think that Uncle Walt Cronkite was fair and balanced? Wasn’t he the one who said the Viet Nam war was lost when it wasn’t?

The media (including movies, tv) has been populated with socialist/leftists for at least half a century. The only difference is now they can no longer control the narriative. Long live the new media, down with the old!

neyney on August 16, 2012 at 3:37 PM

Actually, I’m mystified by the distance that Obama has put between himself and the White House press corps. They’ve treated Obama with a lot more deference than George W. Bush got. Really, Ed. What part of reality do you think the President lives in? You constantly act like everything he has done is rational and based on logic, and you give him the benefit of the doubt time and time again because you have no smoking gun, concrete proof that he has nefarious intentions, or that the people he surrounded himself with aren’t nefarious and ugly intentioned.

At some point, even though you have zero concrete proof, or some kind of “Final Solution” memo, that he is incompetent and his entire administration is built on corruption, day in and day out, and to their very core, you will have to face the fact that the preponderance of the evidence is that HE IS deliberately ruining the country and he has zero intention of changing course even though he has ample evidence his policies are making things worse and worse.

The willful blindness of journalists (Like Tapper and the WH Press Corps) and hope to be/act like fair journalists (including you, Allah, and MKH) to see the RESULTS of the President’s policies and leadership as demonstrating obvious destructive actions and hostile intent is the big story here. After letting someone piss on my back for 4 years, and allow him to tell me it is rain, I am the one at fault for not calling him a Liar, a Thief, and a Thug. The fact that you still harbor even the slightest shred of doubt over his failures or his actions makes you guys the bigger fools than even the MSM. Almost like Battered Wife Syndrome.

There is no need to claim in noble tones, and constantly give the benefit of the doubt, that the incompetent fool didn’t really mean to cut off your leg with the chain saw, until you have disarmed him and restrained him from cutting off your head with his next move.

The President is only interested in entertainment rags because they give him the softball questions. He can’t appear aloof but he knows the media will have to come correct at some point to save their already failed reputation. The media smell blood in the water with the various polls showing Romney either in a dead heat or ahead so they have to start hammering the President otherwise their true identity could be discovered.

The hilarious truth is the American people discovered as recent as 2008 that the media were nothing more than lapdogs which is why viewers have fled MSNBC and CNN to Fox News or great blogging sites like this one. At least sites like Hot Air produce content through various authors and sources instead of putting it through the same meat grinder like the alphabet soup media.

The President doesn’t like to be criticized even in the slightest.
