Video: Romney tells CBS that Obama’s running to “hang onto power”

posted at 8:41 am on August 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Mitt Romney continued to hammer Barack Obama for the tone of his campaign, calling it based on “jealousy and anger” in an interview today with CBS News. “I think he’ll do anything in his power,” Romney said, “to get re-elected. … He’s running to hang onto power.”

National Journal reported on the interview:

After lashing out on Tuesday at President Obama’s as “angry and desperate,” Mitt Romney again used tough language to describe his opponent in a television interview on Wednesday.

“If you look at the ads that have been described and the divisiveness based upon income, age, ethnicity and so forth, it’s designed to bring a sense of enmity and jealous and anger,” Romney said on CBS’s This Morning on Wednesday. “The president seems to be running to hang on to power. I think he’ll do anything in his power to try and get re-elected.”

Romney accused Obama of waging a campaign of anger and hate on Tuesday in a speech in Ohio, citing an incident in which Vice President Joe Biden told an audience, which included African-Americans, that Romney’s policies would “unchain” Wall Street and put citizens “back in chains.”

CBS tried a couple of times to get Romney to accuse Biden of dog-whistling on racism, but Romney cagily wouldn’t bite.  Instead, he just noted that Americans were disgusted by Biden’s comments, and that the Obama-Biden campaign is “not uplifting, not uniting,” but attempting to win through division and anger.

On budgets and Medicare, Romney emphasized that he’s running on his own budget, and that he would restore the $716 billion in cuts to Medicare imposed by Obama.  Romney talked a little bit about the differences between his and Ryan’s plans, emphasizing that his own plan accomplishes budget balance earlier than Ryan’s.

Overall, a very good performance by Romney, who by the end of the interview had CBS’ anchors laughing and asking soft questions.  Put in Olympic terms, Romney stuck the landing.

Yup, its official. Most racist campaign since Reagan 1980. The only question is has the country changed for the better since then. We’ll see.

You run with that…..

I’ll run with….

“All Americans are suffering right now because one party is using the levers at regulatory agencies to try to pick winners rather than serve the people….we ALL NEED TO GROW BACK TO PROSPERITY TOGETHER!”

We’ll know who we are by Christmas sport.

I believe in all decent Americans regardless of race, faith, or party.

What are you placing faith in?

we don’t need to rage on the illegals to point that fact out.

harlekwin15 on August 15, 2012 at 11:19 AM

Or as Ryan put it:

“We’re the ones who are not raiding Medicare to pay for ObamaCare. We’re the ones who are repealing President Obama’s 15-person bureaucratic board that will put price controls on Medicare that will lead to denied care for current seniors.”

Nicer way of saying: Obama gutted Medicare to pay for death panels. Illegal immigrants are icing on a badly-baked cake.

Verb – cmon, anything? You got anything but getting into name calling?

verb – he wants to be president to do what? Neither he or his party seem to have any real interest in governing. If they did we would at least have some realistic debates on a budget and entitlements. Seems all they want is the chance to skim some money off the top of the govt goodies they send to their financial backers.

Zomcon JEM on August 15, 2012 at 9:28 AM

What is the argument for Obama’s second term? Why does he want to be president?

And Lib – yeah I noticed Mitt was running so far from Ryan’s budget that he noted his (Romney’s own) budget actually gets to balance faster than Ryans. And lets see, noted that Obama is taking over $700B out of Medicare and Ryan has an answer. Yep, sure, he is running away.

And what about the normal weekend impact to the daily tracking polls that always pulls Obama back up – didn’t notice that this weekend. I also saw that RCP seems to have taken some previously leaning Obama electorial votes off the table. Didn’t notice any missing from Mitt’s column though.

You guys need to work on your game – this is getting way too easy.

Sure, he’ll do anything to get reelected just to enjoy the perks of the office for four more years, jetting around the world, playing golf, throwing extravagant WH parties, dissing conservatives and Republicans.

All he and MoochieAntoinette ever wanted was to be flipping off the average American by living it up on the taxpayer dime while guaranteeing that they’d be able to cash in for the rest of their lives and never have to really ever again work a single moment of a single day bcuz they’ll get paid big bucks to do what they both love to do best and that is being up on their soapboxes all day long, pontificating, haranguing, preaching, lecturing, admonishing, sermonizing–constantly shooting off their big yaps, talk talk talk talk talk but never really saying anything that any real American would care to hear. Keep living in delusions liberal scum… The elections is about Obama utterly failed record… On elections day the majority of voters are going to ask the most simple question “Do we want four more years of this CRAP?”… their answer would be “No, Hell No”…

mnjg on August 15, 2012 at 11:15 AM

No.

The majority will still vote for Obama. They will prefer the Crook over the Crook they do not know.

Mitt would have to sale himself to them to possibly win. His toughest sell is going to be to his own base. So far they are concerned he will just be another GW Bush. The base and everyone else in America hated GW Bush when he left office. But so far Romney has sounded just like GW Bush. Somehow if Romney wants to win he has to show how he is not GW Bush. Because Americans choose Obama over GW Bush once and will do so again. They still blame GW Bush for this recession because, lets face the truth, it happened on his watch. GW pushed for TARP. We now understand that was a big mistake but Romney was for it. Unless Romney can show he is much different than GW Bush the American people will not elect Romney. Divided Government slows things down and GW Bush took America in the wrong direction in his second term. This is not debatable. The proof is we lost all three branches of Government by a big margin. We got one back and will most likely get another but the American People will not give us all three unless they really trust Romney to do the right thing. Right now he has shown himself to be nothing but GW Bush II.

And, when challenged, they can never, ever give you a reason to vote for their candidate. When challenged, they either scurry off to a corner like rats because they have no answer, or they change the subject back to how evil/racist our candidate is.

They gona put y’all back in chains.

That is what Biden said. The black audiance knew exactly what he was saying as evidenced by their moans of outrage. Joe was saying Republicans want to make you slaves again.

This outrageous. Only Democrats have ever done that. The second Republican that ran for President first to become President freed them but then Democrats came down south and put them back in chains (chain gangs). Johnson fought tooth and nail to keep the Civil Rights Act from becoming law as Speaker of the House then he became president (through assination?) and continued to fight against it until the Republicans and enough Democrats could override his veto only then signing it into law.

Byrd famous as a KKK leader remained in the Senate till he died at 96 or so. Other Democrats commonly use the N word.

Democrats are pure racist and hate blacks. They want to keep them in their place exactly what Joe was doing here.

As Governor Mitt Romney raised taxes/fees by 700 million. He likes to lie he didn’t by not including fees. Well a fee is just another name for a tax. They both force you to give money to the government. But Romney Care included several actual taxes as well.

There are many more. But I mention this one in the hopes that Romney will stop telling it. It will come back and bite him, if he keeps telling it, it is easily disproven.

Alberta_Patriot on August 15, 2012 at 1:23 PM

How is it any different please enlighten me.

The government needs money for the Courts one of the things the Constitution actually says Government should have. You can raise taxes or fees to pay for those courts. So you decide business should pay. Thus you tax their income 1% say. The other option is to charge them fees. Either way the business still have to pay the money. A Fee is simply another name for a tax.

Government by a gun taking someones money is a tax. You can call it a fee but it is still a tax. Many of the fees Romney raised also infringed on the Constitution. For example in Mass it cost more to prove your innocence after fees than to pay the fine for minor infractions. This means you are no longer innocent until proven guilty as it cost more to defend your self thus a cop gives you a ticket you have to pay period.

Steveangell on August 15, 2012 at 1:48 PM

A fee is not a tax. It’s not surprising that an admitted communist can’t tell the difference.

Alberta_Patriot on August 15, 2012 at 1:23 PM

I guess to you anyone that disagrees with you is a communist?

Mitt actually is a communist or at least I should say he believed their system was superior to ours when in his 20′s he was the spokesman for his fathers campaign. He had nothing but praise for the USSR and North Vietnam. He said Americans did the “brainwashing” not the North Vietnamese tell that to McCain.

Obviously you have no idea who I am.

I am a Tea Party Conservative Republican. I detest Johnson and all other Progressives like Mitt loved to call himself when he ran for Governor in 2002 and said he was to the left of the Democrat he ran against. He said that Republican Registeration was a technicality and he did not like a single Republican. Thus by his own words he is a Democrat not a Republican. I still consider him a Democrat and will not vote for any Democrat including Mitt. What is to the left of a Democrat. A Communist. There is nothing else to the left so in 2002 Mitt was an admitted Communist, at least as admitted as any Communist in elected office in America.

I thought that Romney went a bit over the top by labeling the ads as hateful but overall held himself well in his responses; especially being prepared with specific examples of where his budget plan differed from Ryan’s, however moderately.

I can not tell you the sighs of relief that are going off in the liberal blogosphere and facebook feeds this morning. What. a. joke.

Su-u-u-u-re they are, liveasaslaveanddie.

You’re the joke. (along with the rest of the leftoid drones, leeches, looters and moochers)

Just another depraved leftoid drone.

Haven’t the time right now to read all the comments, so I’m assuming the female interrogator misquoted Biden. He didn’t say a d*mn thing about middle class. Romney needed to correct her and explain in plain language that charging him of wanting to reinstitute slavery is beyond despicable..beyond anything any reasonable person would say or believe.

Poor little liveasaslaveanddie – just pulls the talking points out of the memo and pastes them here. It doesn’t even bother to check for lies that are too blatant.

I’m startin’ to think that liveasaslaveanddie isn’t very bright – sort of like its obamassiah.

(The affirmative action committee sure blew it with that one.)

How anyone can infer racism in that wonderful statement of unity is completely beyond me.

wolly4321 on August 15, 2012 at 11:43 AM

It’s all they have. The leftoid drones still believe that, if they shout “Racist!” loud enough and long enough that we’ll back down.
As unaware as they are, they don’t understand that they’ve played that hand out. The card has expired. NO ONE CARES ANYMORE; and no one takes them seriously.
But, they can’t change. They never have…and they never will. They just aren’t very bright.

It is good to see that Romney has ramped up his efforts.

As Sarah Palin said yesterday evening in an interview with Greta van Susteren, when defending his new style:

Palin: Romney ‘Has a Responsibility to Take Gloves Off’
http://nation.foxnews.com/sarah-palin/2012/08/15/palin-romney-has-responsibility-take-gloves

In proceeding in this manner, Romney makes it easier for people who have been uneasy about him to set aside their misgivings and help with the effort to defeat Obama.

To argue that the economy can grow and create jobs if businesses are “unshackled” from senseless regulations is certainly not the same thing as claiming, as Joe Biden did, that one’s opponent is “gonna put y’all back in chains.” King, a strong Obama supporter, is clearly race-baiting.
