Obama lies for Biden: Oh, hey, he didn’t mean anything by that really obvious “chains” racial pander

posted at 8:02 pm on August 15, 2012 by Allahpundit

Consider this progress. Four years ago, it was The One himself smearing McCain from the stump by warning that his opponents would try to make an issue out of the fact that he doesn’t look like the other presidents on the currency. This year, he’s content to let Biden do the racial pandering while offering him political cover as necessary by playing dumb.

Unbelievable:

Biden’s comment sparked Romney to call the Obama campaign one of “division and hate and anger.” But Obama, speaking to PEOPLE in Dubuque, Iowa, seemed unrattled by the controversy. He said Biden’s words needed to be considered in context; that he was only saying “you, consumers, the American people, will be a lot worse off if we repeal these [Wall Street reform] laws as the other side is suggesting.”

“In no sense was he trying to connote something other than that,” Obama added.

Pressed to say whether Biden’s wording was unfortunate or something he’s okay with, the president sighed. “The truth is that during the course of these campaigns, folks like to get obsessed with how something was phrased even if everybody personally understands that’s not how it was meant,” Obama said. “That’s sort of the nature of modern campaigns and modern coverage of campaigns. But I tell you, when I’m traveling around Iowa, that’s not what’s on people’s minds.”

I can’t believe there’s a person on either side who watched the clip of Biden, heard “they’re” become “they,” “going to” become “gon,” and “you” become “y’all” — all in service to an embarrassingly overwrought metaphor about “chains” — and doesn’t think he was engaged in an excruciatingly condescending racial pander. It’s one thing for liberals to acknowledge the pander and defend it, as sleazy as that might be. But let’s please be big boys and girls and agree on what he was obviously, patently trying to do. Biden himself all but acknowledged it this morning when he said he’s often criticized for saying exactly what he means, and that he’ll never change. Fair enough. He’s owning it. Time for O to stop pretending, especially since he’s capable of far more subtle racial appeals to black audiences than Vice President Doofus stooped to yesterday. He knows exactly what Biden was doing. He just doesn’t care.

Here’s former Democratic Congressman — and Obama campaign co-chair — Artur Davis lowering the boom on Biden on CNN today. Not a huge surprise given that Davis is now a Republican who’s campaigning for Romney, but a righteous clip nonetheless. My only quibble is that he gives Obama far too much credit for his own allegedly positive tone; as noted above, Bambi is by no means above using racial politics to help his cause, especially if he’s got a willing surrogate to do the dirty work for him. When you’re done here, go watch Former Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder hit Biden hard on Fox News this afternoon too. I think he lets Biden off easy — the point of yesterday’s shtick wasn’t to “joke about slavery” but rather to make Romney and Ryan somehow complicit in the practice — but whatever. The more heat O takes from Democrats on this, the more he’ll think twice about sinking even lower. Exit quotation from Paul Ryan: “We’ve gone from hope and change to anger and division and blame and attack. I think people are going to see through this.”

Democratics dogwhistles.

If GOPers are so racist, why are trying to improve inner city schools by using vouchers to make them competitive… create jobs, so people can lift themselves out of poverty… and put an end to generational dependency on Goverment?

It’s Democrats who are trying to re-enslave minorities, by encouraging them that only bad things will happen if they seek freedom from Government rolls… it’s the Dems who are running the modern-day plantation.

VastRightWingConspirator on August 15, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Biden’s speech was written, correct? I know he goes off the cuff sometimes, but that thing sounded painfully rehearsed. There was no real cresceno on the way to “Chaaaains” like you’d expect from someone comfortable with that type of speaking. It seemed really forced, not the kind of thing that comes from the heart, but rather, from a note card.

And if it was written for him, that would explain the administration’s immediate defense of the language; Cutter being completely comfortable with it. “Off the cuff” would have led to a different defense, I think.

There was an African-American woman who called into Rush’s show today who articulated exactly what I was thinking after hearing Biden spew out his craziness: she said, (paraphrasing) ” what did he expect the crowd to come back with, ” oh please, no mastah, not the chains again, please no!”. What Biden said was unmistakeable, and quite possibly the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard a politician say. No sane, (honest) person could claim differently.

BettyRuth on August 15, 2012 at 8:10 PM

To expand on my comment above- It seemed as though Biden was trying to reach the southern black voter. As though the campaign had written the speech to reach that demographic and as we’ve seen, the lily-white OofA staff probably thinks this kind of speech is how you do it.

rbj on August 15, 2012 at 8:14 PM

In 1992, Ross Perot said to the NAACP gathering that a down economy hurts blacks first and the most. He said, “you know who gets hurt the most? You people do.”

That’s paraphrasing off the top of my head, but very close. Apparently the phrase “you people” was considered offensive, for what reason I don’t know. But his intent was obviously not to offend, I think he was as clueless about the dog-whistle phrase as I am. But still, the press excoriated him.

And Biden, in a clearly racially charged statement?

Davis is absolutely correct when he tells Blitzer, “Give that audience some credit. They knew exactly was Joe Biden was saying.” And as he further said, to suggest otherwise is an insult to them. The democrat playbook is really being shown this campaign in all of its ugly glory — these sleazy politicians go before black audiences, and what they think most of all is that they’re speaking before a bunch of dumb people who can be relied upon to nod approvingly at anything they say. Artur Davis is showing where the true racists are, and it’s got to be rocking the barack regime.

TXUS on August 15, 2012 at 8:45 PM

Fixed. The reason The One did not bring The Hill in on a “unity ticket” in ’08 was that He remembers Vince Foster all too clearly.

Never put temptation in the way of Lady Macbeth.

To dump Biden, He has two “breakpoints” coming. August 24 is the day the GOP convention begins, and if He wants to upstage that, He has to get Plugs to “step aside” before then.

The “drop dead” date is September 6. That’s the day all candidates have to file the papers declaring they are standing for election, for any office. The POTUS and VOTUS are no different. After that, He either has to keep Joe the Mouth, run without a running mate, or (if He wins) get Joe to “step down” almost immediately after he takes the oath the second time.

But if The One gets that far, he won’t. Because the whole reason for Joe being VOTUS to begin with is insurance. Saying to us;

“You’d better hope I stay healthy. How long do you think you’d last with this yutz in the center seat?”

My guess is this is why He is defending Joe now. He needs him.

We don’t. But He does.

I envision it as an amalgam of Forrest Gump without the character, Rain Man without the math skills and Vizzini without the Sicilian charm and vocabulary.

So a band named DEVO(Short for Devolution) is making anit-Romney songs for Obama’s campaign whose slogan is Forward. The irony.

Zaire67 on August 15, 2012 at 9:29 PM

I liked Devo. About the same time I liked Gary Numan. Which was when I was just out of college.

About thirty years ago.

If that’s the “hippest” thing The One’s campaign can come up with, their next piece probably should be “Autumn”*. At least, they’d be going out with a bit of dignity.

(*The piece actually played by the band as the Titanic sank. No, they did not play, “Nearer, My God, To Thee”, as legend has it.)

Del Dolemonte on August 15, 2012 at 9:38 PM

Next week Biden will be in blackface in front of a crowd and declare “Weez gonna getz dem crackaz beefo theyz gets us” and then the MSM will think nothing of it and try to blame the Republicans for being racist.

After that Biden will goto a 7-11 and engage in local dialect.

Rambotito on August 15, 2012 at 9:41 PM

Are we to the point yet where it is clear that it is crystal clear that there is no reconciliation possible with these creeps?

It’s obvious that the DeMarxist party has been infiltrated but pure, unadulterated evil. They lie, cheat, steal and more all in the name of power and control. I don’t how how good can exist with evil much longer.

I know, it was the adoption of the Southern vernacular that made him say stupid things. I don’t know what his accuse is the rest of the time.

Cindy Munford on August 15, 2012 at 9:47 PM

defended the ryan plan more for starters. thats partly why he picked him i thought. with all the geniuses working for him, you would have thought their answers would have been better choreographed.

instead the dems run out and call him a granny killer and now he’s being defined on their own terms. on day one i would have drowned ryan in old people. what was he doing on a freakin’ ship. he should have been at The Villages in florida

renalin on August 15, 2012 at 9:26 PM

Have you even bothered to listen to the speeches and interviews Romney has done since naming Ryan as his VP?

I’m guessing no, because they won’t fit your narrative.

Romney spoke in 3 different Florida cities since Saturday and Ryan will be here this weekend.

Oh, and in case you missed it, the DEMwit’s “push granny off a cliff” scare tactic isn’t working. Especially with FL seniors.

Flora Duh on August 15, 2012 at 9:50 PM

I might be naive, but I don’t think that Biden meant anything racial by what he said. I just think that he really is that dumb.

Artur Davis is so articulate and clean in that interview.

those were from april, before he became a candidate. the next polls will come out with him standing next to a squish. looking like 2008 more and more.

I do hope they go to The Villages, I believe it will be epic.

Haven’t had a chance to read through the comments but after watching the interview with Former VA Gov Wilder I was totally impressed.

How many times can you claim “taken out of context”. As my late sister-in-law would say, “I don’t know, it sounds like bull$h!t to me.”
