“We can win North Carolina again!” says Biden… in Virginia

posted at 1:21 pm on August 14, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Who hasn’t had some sort of rockstar-esque, “Thank you, Cincinnat– er, Denver!” slip-of-the-tongue moment of public-speaking horror, and Vice President Joe Biden was stumping in North Carolina yesterday. And, North Carolina and Virginia are similar in electoral weight, their usually-quite-reddish-but-lately-more-purplish recent histories, and their too-close-to-call swing statuses… but, still: It’s Biden. It’s kind of funny.

“With you, we can win North Carolina again, and if we do, we win the election!”

I think I saw him realize what he said and blanch for just a split second there, but he just decided to roll with it. Heh. Anyway, I merely point this out in light of the recent revelation that Joe Biden and Paul Ryan are going to have to debate one another on the national stage soon, and if this sort of melodramatic, populist silliness is the best defense Joe Biden can offer on the Obama economy…

…then Paul Ryan is going to absolutely obliterate him. [Rubs hand together and laughs gleefully.]

You know why, though I hate to beat a dead horse, but NC was the poster boy for where gay marriage takes front and center (like in many swing states) but Romney’s in effect dissing the Chick Fil A supporters hit hard. Romney could have easily said just a few words of support, even if just on the 1st Amendment. But no. It’s inexplicable Romney’s running away from the gay marriage issue, which loses us essentially no votes if we take our stand forcefully, but gains us many Dem leaners that will not vote for Romney if Romney appears to be Mr “Evolving” Mush on the key issue. Puzzling.

I’ll cut Bite Me a little bit of slack. They travel all over the place, so it’s easy to get confused. Plus it’s not like the Dems won’t have North Carolina on the brain considering their convention there begins in 3 weeks.

THIS on the other hand is devastating news for the Democrats:

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds challenger Mitt Romney picking up 51% of the vote while the president earns just 35%. Three percent (3%) prefer some other candidate, and 11% are undecided.

Before any troll points out what we already know which is that Obama barely won Indiana last time(less than a percentage point), look at where he’s fallen since 2008. Nearly 17 points! Imagine a dropoff merely half that size in other traditionally red states that he picked off last time and we’re looking at a landslide for Romney/Ryan.

As someone who went to Chick-fil-A several times that week to stand up against the Boston and Chicago mayors, and still tries to go regularly, I think speaking out would only have hurt Romney. I would have liked the first amendment angle, but most of my liberal friends and low information friends never even heard about that part of it. All they were exposed to was if you go to Chick-fil-A you hate gay people. I have a really good nice friend who signed up for that Starbucks appreciation day to stand up against the “hate sandwiches.” I’m sure it will come up in the debates and Romney can make a first amendment comment when the issue has less emotion attached to it.

And also, if faith is that important for a voter’s life, they already know about Obama’s war on religion and are not going to vote for him anyway.

Conservative4ev on August 14, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Not about social issues, per se. Not about abortion, for example, where intensity is even, and we could lose votes. But about gay marriage, where intensity is running higher than ever against it, and among persuadable independents, to reiterate, we won’t lose votes by taking a stand. Romney needs to stop running away from issues because that will reinforcing his reputation for doing just that. And Ryan is not necessarily the panacea for Romney’s Mush problem.
We are not making the election about social issues. We are making it about a choice between the left and the right. Now, if Mitt decides that he wants to selectively edit out certain aspects of what is “the right,” in the public’s eye this left / right choice will get fuzzy, and people will revert to seeing Romney as “coreless,” and the election will become a unwinnable fight about personalities and likeability. Track on multiple issues! And take firm stands like you mean it!

Serious question: is he senile or suffering from dementia?

St Gaudens on August 14, 2012 at 1:33 PM

He has brain issues.

From 2008

There has already been some speculation in blogdom about whether or not Vice-Presidential Candidate Senator Joseph Biden had two operations for brain tumors several years ago. Many contend that the original announcements were that he had brain tumor operations, but when he began to run for the presidency eight years ago the word was that they were not brain tumors but were instead brain aneurysms.

Brain tumors/Brain aneurysms?

There certainly is a difference, but when one is thinking about it in terms of the person who will be either the Vice-President or the President of the United States it is legitimate to raise doubts about the fitness of any person who has had either a brain tumor or a brain aneurysm to hold such an office, and Joseph Biden has had two of them.

Barack Obama stole 716 billion from every working man and woman in America.

I’ll leave the fractional math to Ogabe….

I care a lot more about Venture socialism than Gay Marriage and I am willing to bet most working Americans gay, straight, or something in between do too.

The economy is all of us, and allowing the democrats to retain power over it by trying to be referee of our descent is dumb.

DC should get out of the way, and if a state wants Gay Marriage pass it, and the gays would really do themselves a favor if they quit undermining the relationship between people because the public is slowly moving their way….ie good behavior will lead to faster tolerance.
