Video: Soledad O’Brien’s membership in Mantra Club confirmed

posted at 12:41 pm on August 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Did you like the Newt Gingrich/Piers Morgan bout earlier today?  That was just the undercard.  John Sununu appeared on CNN’s Starting Point this morning with Soledad O’Brien and fought the main bout in the center(-left) ring.  Where Morgan allowed Gingrich to have his say, O’Brien and Sununu repeatedly interrupted each other with charges of talking-points reliance, trading haymakers all fight long.

Who won? Mediaite scores it a draw for everyone:

“I have the Congressional Budget Office Budget report right here,” Sununu said, waving it on camera. “Go read page 13 and 14.”

“I can tell you what it says, yes,” said O’Brien. “It cuts a reduction in the expected rate of growth, which you know. Not cutting benefits to the elderly. Benefits will be improved. The focus is on hospitals. The focus is on health insurance.”

“He gutted the program by $711 million [sic],” said Sununu of Obama. “And the fact is he reduces services to Medicare beneficiaries currently on the package. What the difference is, is that Romney says no impact to anybody 55 or over. It is clear in here that the reduction in services start on January 1, 2013 and Obama stole that money to put it into programs under Obamacare…”

“The hospitals agreed to that,” O’Brien countered. “The drug providers agreed to that because their theory is that what they’re going to be able to do is make up by the number of people who come into the system. It doesn’t reduce or cut the benefits. Right….”

“Soledad, stop this!” said Sununu. “All you’re doing is mimicking the stuff that comes out of the White House and gets repeated on the Democratic blog boards out there….”

“I’m telling you what FactCheck.com tells you,” she insisted. “I’m telling you what the CBO tells you. I’m telling you what CNN’s independent analysis does.”

“Put an Obama bumper sticker on your forehead when you do this,” Sununu shot back.

Sununu meant to say $711 billion, of course.  In ObamaCare, $711 million is just a rounding error.  Both of the combatants flashed paper on screen while talking, although in O’Brien’s case, that may not mean much. The reduction — and it is a reduction of the $700+ billion comes from Medicare Advantage, the successful public/private partnership that allowed seniors a chance to access increased benefits and more comprehensive coverage in a federally-managed exchange.  Taking that option from seniors and the disabled means less coverage for the 25% of Medicare recipients who opted into it, and the money gets shifted to pay for part of the Medicaid expansion and the subsidies for people buying health insurance in the exact same kind of exchanges that Democrats found so objectionable in Medicare.

Maybe O’Brien should pay a little more attention to Barack Obama’s own words.  The GOP reminds us that in November 2009, Obama not only proudly owned those cuts to Medicare, he threatened to veto any attempt to reverse them:

Claiming that the $700 billion isn’t a reduction for current Medicare recipients is just nonsense. But it is a prerequisite to join Mantra Club.  And now it seems clear that Romney/Ryan surrogates intend to challenge media figures on bias when they try to use Democratic talking points on the Ryan plan in interviews this week, which is good news indeed.

With people such as Soledad OBrien, Chris Matthews, Maddow, etc. on Left networks, I really, really wonder if Beavis and Butthead are employed as the producers.

Seriously, I have a difficult time believing there’s anyone capablle in charge at the Left networks. Their programming AND employees function at a far worse level than any junior high media department. red_herring on August 14, 2012 at 12:46 PM

Well. I wouldn’t say we’re criticizing Obama for cutting Medicare, the conservatives are simply criticizing the disgusting and hypocritical Democrats for slandering Paul Ryan and the Republican Party for doing something which was actually the cornerstone of the ObamaCare bill.

Paul Ryan’s plan actually tackles the overwhelming amount of spending with regard to healthcare spending in general, not just the new spending created from ObamaCare. It’s just, if you’re going to criticize someone for a policy stance, the Democrats shouldn’t get away with being two-faced.

Aizen on August 14, 2012 at 12:52 PM

And that’s exactly the problem. Even if Romeny wins, there will be no chance of getting the Ryan budget passed.

Red Cloud on August 14, 2012 at 12:57 PM

Claiming that the $700 billion isn’t a reduction for current Medicare recipients is just nonsense.

It’s the same treatment with Medicare that Obama/Left is attempting against the 2nd Amendment:

With Medicare, drastically underfunding reimbursements to practitioners accelerates the reduction in practitioners who will participate in Medicare, and thus, though people may be IN Medicare (or Obamacare because the same principle applies here as practiced by Obama/etc.), they can’t find practitioners/physicians to provide them with medical care.

So, “they’re insured” but they can’t get anyone to provide any care to them. Presto, ruined system by back-door manipulations.

Same principle at work where the 2nd is concerned: you don’t attack “the right to own guns” but you attack the munitions used by people who DO own guns (if you can’t find/buy ammunition, a gun isn’t much use).

Thus, Left can crow how they’re “respecting the 2nd Amendment right” while they’re making it increasingly difficult to actually use guns.

red_herring on August 14, 2012 at 12:46 PM

Because he is spending the “savings” to fund Obamacare instead of keeping the money in the Medicare system.

Alternatively he could have reduced the Medicare payroll tax and passed the “savings” on to the tax payers — as if that thought ever crossed him mind.

The only reason the Dems made those “cuts” was to provide funding for Obamacare.

Obama’s objective is to remove Medicare or render it gone.

Look at this Dem Muppet whining about “a reduction in the rate of growth is not a cut.”

Oh YEAH? Obviously Doo-dad O’Brien was still in her Advanced Democratic Socialism 304 class back when Bill Clinton, Dick Gephardt, and David Bonior were calling ANY Republican-proposed reduction in the rate of growth “mean spirited open warfare on (children) (women) (seniors) (the neediest Americans) (fill in grievance group here).”

And yes, I’m banging my head against the wall in the absence of the Overton Window, but why the heck are we bombing each other over who is cutting Medicare more? I guess Michael Steele was ahead of the curve. Privatize that LBJ-designed Dem voter manufacturing program, and you’ve just fixed the US economy.

fiatboomer on August 14, 2012 at 1:04 PM

Where is O’Brien (and Maddow vs Lowrey) getting the talking point that Ryan also wanted to cut 700 bill from Medicare? It was the only point that Maddow kept hammering. The only rebutt that Lowery and Sununu had was that Romney is at the top of the ticket, not Ryan. If Maddow and O’Brien said it, I assume the opposite is true, but I have yet to hear it refuted. It would be easy enough to say that “The One” HAS cut 700 bill so any talk of a proposal being equal doesn’t wash, but where does their point of a Ryan cut come from?

The GOP isn’t framing this debate. They never will. Even the merest whisper of entitlement reform from the GOP and the media goes into red alert and the Chris Matthews of the world talk about how the GOP wants old people to die and the poor to starve to death, and the children too!

Ryan’s plan is very moderate and I think we will need something much stronger to stave off disaster but it’s as good as we’re going to get right now.

No matter what anyone does the chances of the Medicare payroll tax going down are nil. It will stay the same and go up. The Dems know it must go up for everyone if Medicare is not reformed. But they will not say this. they only want the “rich” to pay more into Medicare.

How Medicare spends the funds allocated and currently collected via the Medicare payroll tax is the issue.

I think Ryan is quite capable of articulating all of this.

Obama and the Dems are trying to crucify Ryan for proposing to do exactly what they claim they are doing, making more efficient use of Medicare funds. That is blatant hypocrisy.

Yeah, the voucher is optional, but everything I’ve read says that as a result, most seniors (future seniors that is) will have to contribute a few thousand a year for insurance. Just wait, this will be a non-stop democrat talking point soon.

red_herring on August 14, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Whether seniors do or don’t “have to contribute” their own money to fund their own medical care isn’t the actual issue…but those are interesting choices of words you’ve made there.

“having to” spend one’s own money for one’s own needs, wow, what a concept.

You can have public health center “care” or you can purchase private physician’s time and attention. Most people make choices along those lines and eagerly pay their own way when and as they can for what they want.

Obamacare concept is based upon the sales point that “everything will be free” and there’s no personal accountability but somehow all that “care” just flows to anyone and everyone because, because, well, because it’s “healthcare” and it just flows, man, comes from somewhere, someone learned something…

Medical care comes at a price. The price has to be paid by someone and most individual consumers understand that and that’s why they purchase private insurance and it’s welcomed by some physicians to complete a competent provision of services.

Or, you can go to a public health center in any county and stand in line for days and get an aspirin or a tooth pulled when you have a cavity “because they only pull teeth”…that’s what “Obamacare” is by the way, that sort of “care”.

Do you have a degree in economics!!!

Why didn’t she ask him something like ‘Have you ever even had to deal with government budgeting?”

BigWyo on August 14, 2012 at 1:12 PM

The only thing interesting about this is that now and in the future, the media, or at least CNN, can no longer label cuts in the rate of growth as “spending cuts.” They just gave that up, which is good if Romney/Ryan win.

That being said, everyone who comes here already knows about media bias.

More helpful as postings would be what needs to be done in battleground states to help Romney/Ryan defeat Obama/Biden. Gratuitous clips such as this don’t so that.

Sheerq on August 14, 2012 at 1:12 PM

In ObamaCare, $711 million is just a rounding error.

It’s a travesty to the land that Obama made billions/trillions appear like hundreds/thousands. The collection will occur, no doubt.

farsighted on August 14, 2012 at 1:10 PM

And WHY Obama and the Dems are doing that IS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO END MEDICARE inorder to proliferate “Obamacare”.

The Left’s goal is to end Medicare. They WANT it to go under, that’s inherent in their plan to implement Obamacare at the expense of Medicare and private insurance options (and private medical care).

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are working toward strengthening and continuing Medicare and private insurance industries. That thwarts the Left’s plans to proliferate Obamacare.

Lourdes on August 14, 2012 at 1:15 PM

And now it seems clear that Romney/Ryan surrogates intend to challenge media figures on bias when they try to use Democratic talking points on the Ryan plan in interviews this week, which is good news indeed.

They need to remind the old media that what they eat is Obama’s caca, not Beluga caviar.

Schadenfreude on August 14, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Why is this relevant? Are you saying a person who can afford to opt out deserves our sympathies and should be covered as well under any government plan?

NotCoach on August 14, 2012 at 1:09 PM

I agree with you whole heartedly. If you can afford to cover the costs of insurance, you absolutely should. And that’s why we should be defending it, rather than complaining about medicare cuts that need to happen, regardless of who is president.

To understand what Obama has done with Obamacare in cutting almost 3/4 of a TRILLION dollars out of Medicare, you really have to go back to the over 2000 pages of the original law.

Obama end loaded the cost projections. He has most of the cost actually accrue AFTER THE FIRST FOUR YEARS OF THE PROGRAM.

Why is that important?

Because the CBO, under the law, can ONLY SCORE PROJECTED OVER THE COURSE OF TEN YEARS. So, By end loading the costs, Obama essentially pushed back almost half of the cost of the program to the NEXT ten year scoring period.

Another accounting trick was employed by actually double counting the $716 Billion as BOTH A SAVINGS AND AS REVENUE TO FUND THE EXPANSION.

YOU CAN NOT SPEND THE SAME DOLLAR TWICE.

Since we know that the expansion WILL occur under Obamacare, the only way that the funds can be poured into free contraception, obesity treatments and ‘preventative care’ for young working age adults, will be to stop providing necessary treatment for seniors. Hip replacements, knee replacements, expensive life saving treatments like cancer treatment, coronary care, kidney treatments will be severely rationed. That’s what the IPAB is FOR.

So, by end loading the program, the money projected as necessary will inevitably fall far short of reality. Compound that with taking money out of Medicare to begin with, and you have a recipe for extreme rationing, immense unnecessary pain and suffering, and even unnecessary death. These are NOT acceptable ‘unintended consequences’.

However, since projections now put Medicare on the path for bankruptcy under Obamacare far sooner than if nothing had been changed, its sort of irrelevant.

NO ONE WILL GET ANY CARE WHEN WE HAVE NO MONEY TO PAY FOR ANY OF IT.

We must elect ROMNEY/RYAN 2012 and repeal Obamacare and replace it with free market alternatives that will actually LOWER THE COST OF HEALTH CARE INSURANCE AND HEALTH CARE SERVICES to provide better, more affordable insurance and health care for everyone. Its the only way to save the safety net programs.

NotCoach on August 14, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Meanwhile, notice that Obama’s trying to resell himself as “being there for you” and offering to literally hold people’s hands despite the fact that they’re sinking. Just holding his hand and having him there, he’s saying, helps you ignore he’s fitting your feet with cement blocks in a highwater circumstance.

Obama has nothing upon which to occupy the Presidency other than his claims and pretense of “celebrity” and that’s all there is. He and Dems are going after Ryan because Ryan has all the capabilities and qualities and intellect that Obama lacks.

red_herring on August 14, 2012 at 12:46 PM

Mainly because 0 transferred the money away from it so we would all move to Single Payer. Crappy plan that will break the country’s system. Both financially and quality wise.
