Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:01 am on August 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
There’s nothing like the hometown to get a politician feeling on top of the world. When Paul Ryan headed home as Mitt Romney’s running mate this weekend, a “massive” crowd greeted him like a homecoming hero, despite having only hours to coordinate it:
The largest crowd of the campaign so far for a Mitt Romney event welcomed home favorite son Rep. Paul Ryan at a massive rally here in the congressman’s district Sunday night, pushing the GOP’s vice presidential nominee to tears as he took the stage, setting off cheers with two simple words:
“Hi mom.” …
“I’m a Wisconsinite through and through,” Ryan said to cheers from a crowd which contained many members of Ryan’s extended family, and which the campaign estimated to be more than ten thousand strong, likely the largest turnout ever for a Romney event.
Some estimates had the crowd size as high as 13,000. But you know who else had a homecoming? The man at the top of the other ticket, Barack Obama. He came to Chicago for a long-planned fundraiser only hours after Ryan generated the huge crowd in Wisconsin. Tickets started at $51 a pop, celebrating the President’s birthday a week earlier. The hometown crowds must really have been huge, considering the size of the city in comparison to Ryan’s less-populous district, right? Er …
Just to clarify, tix *started* at $51. Obama campaign sez event was sold out, but room is about half full. Hmmm.
— jodikantor (@jodikantor) August 12, 2012
There may have been a reason for that:

@jodikantor Did they really screwup CST/CDT?
— Kevin Meyers (@kevinmeyers) August 12, 2012
@kevinmeyers You’re the second person to say that.
— jodikantor (@jodikantor) August 12, 2012
Politico tried to scoff at Kantor’s first-person report:
But the crowd for the afternoon fundraiser at the Bridgeport Art Center totaled 1,000, an Obama campaign official said – more than the 850-person estimate the campaign offered earlier in the weekend. Tickets for the Gen44 fundraiser, targeted at younger supporters, started at $51, but many were more expensive.
And, to this reporter and several others in the White House press pool, the room seemed plenty full. There was empty space at the back of the large loft space during and immediately after the president’s remarks, but the crowd was densely packed to get close to the stage at the front of the room where Obama spoke.
Kantor wasn’t buying it:
@drudge_report Admission *began* at $51, to clarify. Obama campaign said event was sold out, though the room looked abt 1/2 full to me.
— jodikantor (@jodikantor) August 12, 2012
Too bad Obama comes from such a small hometown, or he might have done better than one-thirteenth of the crowd Ryan attracted.

It’s time once again to show our support for Day By Day and its artist-publisher, Chris Muir. Chris holds an annual fundraiser to keep the adventures of Sam, Zed, Jan, and Damon coming. Chris, whose artwork has enhanced the OOTD feature since its inception for Hot Air readers, uses the funds raised for only the continuance of DBD. As always, the fundraiser has many fabulous gifts available at whatever level one chooses to donate. If you’re thinking about donating at the Jan/Damon level or above, you’ll get a Last Supper Red vs Blue magnet, which has depictions of personalities from New Media — myself included. Donating at the Anatoly Level will get you a 9×15 print of the artwork. Dig deep and be part of supporting the one of the best New Media cartoonists in the biz!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Oh Pooh! I thought for sure the OOTD would have been Obama’s claim yesterday that Paul Ryan was the mastermind behind stalling the Farm Bill that actually passed the House and was voted for by Ryan only to be stuck in the morass that is Harry Reid’s Senate. As I recall, it was the Senate that left town without taking action on the Farm Bill, not the House and certainly not Paul Ryan.
Of course that begs the question if it is an OOTD or an outright and intentional lie. Given the Dems track record the past couple of weeks, I suspect the truth has been suspended until November.

I can picture the press poolers puffing themselves up to increase the ‘size’ of the crowd. They’re good at puff pieces…right?

Obama again tied up traffic at the same time Cubs fans were trying to get to Wrigley Field. Traffic reporters can’t/won’t tell you about the lane and road closures due to security concerns. He ticks off more and more people in Chicago due to his endless fundraising greed.
Can someone explain how individually you can donate $5000 to a presidential campaign but people can still shell out $40,000 a pop for these dinners?

Great juxtaposition, Ed. That never even occurred to me, the two guys in their respective home towns, and the contrasting size of their home towns versus crowds drawn.

U guys are a riot!! Seriously, what voter groups would Hillary bring? (I can’t think of any that BO doesn’t already have.) How’s about the VP debate? Ryan would have to swich some gears to think foreign policy. Biden would be much easier for Ryan to put away.

In the unlikely event that Hillary replaced Biden, it would not be about bringing voter groups along it would be about energizing the base. Pandering is only part of the process. You’ve got to get the panderees to the polls.
Happy Nomad on August 14, 2012 at 8:36 AM
Ryan would shred HILLARY! This election is NOT foreign policy heavy and if Obama wants people reminded that the Media forgot the grim milestones, and Mr. President why have we lost more US forces in ‘ghani in 4 years under you than 6 under President Bush?
Well bring it on fellas….?
because the right answer to the stammering non-answer to what I just put as a question is….
“If we are not going to use our forces to gain victory and make our main focus the mission and then the safety of our men and women in uniform Mister President BRING THE TROOPS HOME.”
We have got Obama boxed in on all sides.
harlekwin15 on August 14, 2012 at 8:36 AM
And farmers are upset bcs this only delays them being able to make their plans for next year at the bank.
But then wheat farmers are getting like $6,000/semi load of wheat.
So I’m not feeling their pain.
I just thank GOD we don’t have to rely upon the Farm Bill for the bank to figure out what our operating loan will be for the next year.
Farmers today (most of them) are nothing but govt wh0res.
And I know this bcs I have many farmer neighbors. And they are ALL wh0res for the $$$$. Even the conservative ones.
Did I miss this as a OOTD?
Bcs it is just effing offensive as hell.

I hope you don’t think I think we should play their game at all.
“Mr. Ryan do you think we should fight for gay rights overseas with our allies?”
Well you know, that is an awesome question…no really it is. Right now we are on the edge of the EUro collapsing and China entering a recession meaning that bond rates will rise on our current 1.7 trillion a year deficit habit. How about we focus on getting the American worker back to work and stabilizing the world economy by encouraging all nations to live within their means and stop balancing the world’s budget on a pile of debt so high it would reach the moon if stacked one atop the other?
Talk past them and the nonsense
harlekwin15 on August 14, 2012 at 11:01 AM
Um, SCOAMF, we pay you $398,000 and you are getting book royalties from the State Dept. buying your book for all of our embassies. She got her own plane to Martha’s Vinyard 4 hours before you flew in your own plane. I think the taxpayers are paying enough. And your whining about her not getting paid sounds more greedy than the worst ’1 percenter’ If you can’t make it on 5 million a year, maybe you need to hire Paul Ryan to look at your own spending.
