Chris Matthews: Paul Ryan “is Ayn Rand” and wants to “screw” the poor

posted at 11:21 am on August 14, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Behold, the self-deceiving power of unswerving progressivism on an ideological tear. Joe Scarborough’s face, at least, seems to suggest that he’s thinking somewhere along the lines of “Is this crackpot for real?,” but Matthews really steals the show here.

You know what Ryan believes in? Getting rid of the cap-gains tax, period!  So he’s a rad—he’s not just a middle-of-the-road guy who wants to make the tough decisions—he’s a guy who wants to help out the winners in society, and make it a little rough for people that are riding along, depending on the government.  He doesn’t like those people.  Especially. No, no. I think he’s Ayn Rand –

JOE SCARBOROUGH: You think that Paul Ryan doesn’t like people that are struggling?

MATTHEWS: Let’s slow down, for jumping on the way I said it. I don’t think he’s sitting there worried about—I don’t think he’s Tip O’Neill, worried about the people on Pell Grants. I don’t think he’s worried about the working poor. I think he’s looking for the winners.  And that’s who he wants to incentivize. And by the way, that’s one of the weird things I notice about the conservative movement is.  They believe that the way to get rich people to work harder is to give them more money. The way to get the poor people to work harder is to screw them a little bit.

Okay, let’s just trace out this logic for a moment here. A little more than roughly forty percent of the voting public is currently planning on voting for the Romney/Ryan ticket, and approximately half of the American population self-identifies as conservative. Millionaires and billionaires do not comprise half of the population; ergo, most people in the conservative movement are not tremendously wealthy. And yet, the conservative movement has not been receptive to President Obama’s fundamentally nonserious ploy to ‘reduce the deficit’ by getting everyone to “pay their fair share,” a.k.a. by hiking taxes on the wealthy. How can this be? Are conservatives just self-defeating financial masochists who love to watch greedy fat cats get richer, or could there perhaps be an alternative theory? Could it be that conservatives are interested in helping the poor, but perhaps believe that the most effective, penetrating, righteous method to enhance the living standards and opportunities of the greatest number of people is to foster a prosperous, growing economy in which an intrusive and inefficient government doesn’t wreck entrepreneurial incentives with redistribution and overregulation? Maybe?

Nah, that can’t be it. You got me, Chris Matthews. We’re just hateful and apathetic towards everyone who isn’t wealthy, including ourselves. That’s us in a nutshell!

And by the way, what is it all these liberals and media outlets trying to associate Paul Ryan as some sort of crazed, diehard Ayn Rand fan, and saying so as if it is an absolute and undeniable given that any interest whatsoever in Ayn Rand’s ideas is a bad thing? I’m pretty sure that Atlas Shrugged is a historically long- and well-selling book, and that sales have spiked in the past few years. Heaven forbid anybody walk away from reading her novels with any productive thoughts about the power of self-ownership and rugged individualism, or anything non-statist like that. Ew, gross.

Forgive me for being a cold-hearted bastard, but what exactly is wrong with wanting to help out winners? I’d much rather have the government on the side of the entrepreneurs and self-reliant individuals than keep throwing money at people who have no desire to better themselves or contribute to society.

What a BRILLIANT analysis of Congressman Ryan Chris, why did your boyfriend steal 716 billion dollars and rising from medicare to pay for Obamacare and still add more to the debt accoridng to the revised CBO figures?

Obama stole the withholdings from every American’s paycheck to get an ego signature vanity bill the American people did not want…..

it was the American people’s money Barack NOT yours to “spread around a little”.

You raided the Medicare “trust fund” you will raid what is left in the social security trust fund, because YOU like to blow money faster than ever before and block growth with your EPA and venture socialism picking winners and losers and interfering with the natural and usual robust growth of the American business owner and employee when left alone. Let the workers get back to work and the environmentalists run their own agenda not use Washington DC to block pipefitter jobs, and shale production and close down our coal mines and plentiful cheap energy resources.

Barack Obama get out of the way of the American people.

The poor will become more deeply impoverished and their numbers will grow under the Obama plan for “shared prosperity” (code for redistribution of wealth). No job creation in the private sector occurs under the Obama plan. Thus, no tax revenues increase even at the current rates.

These people are just shameless.

I have been seeing an ad lately, an official Obama 2012 ad where the President himself starts it off “approving this message”. It goes right into class warfare and two minute hate. A bit subtle in tone, but hate all the same.

“You work hard. You pay your taxes.” (blue collar white people)

“Chances are you paid less than him.” (fade to close up of smiling Romney)

Then it is some stupid crap about the percentage Mitt paid, which is actually capital gains taxes, not income tax. Only percentages.

Then they say under the Romney Plan, more tax breaks for millionaires, while you (blue collar white people) pay more. $2000 more per middle class family.

Unbelievable, straight up lie.

What they are saying is that in order to “pay for” the “tax breaks for millionaires like him“, your taxes would have to go up by an average of $2000 per family.

They are dishonestly implying, without actually saying it, that Romney wants to increase taxes on middle class families.

It is so false and deceptive, I can’t believe it, and it is getting airplay on cable channels here in Tennessee, which nobody thinks is a swing state. They are going national with this stuff, and it is totally false.

This is what Mitt and co. need to be fighting back against, and soon. There are otherwise conservative people around here who fall for this “hate the rich guy, he got rich by screwing you” stuff.

Older people mostly, they fall for it.

I am sure that one has been running a lot more in the swing states, and I have seen it several times the last few days here.

Not a full on “no charity ever for the poor” Rand (she had some serious flaws on that and religion), but more of a “the power of the individual” thing.

Rand never said “no charity for the poor ever.”

Rand wasn’t in support of using government money (ie, other people’s money) in service of ‘eliminating poverty.’ She had no issue with people having private charities to help whatever cause or group they wanted to. As long as it was private and not compelled by force.

Her knock on religion is that it’s a form of mysticism and is dependent on faith (ie, believing without objective evidence), so it is not be objectively true. She didn’t reject the idea that their could be a god, but asserted since there was no evidence to believe there is one, that she didn’t believe in one. Entirely consistent with her philosophy.

Happy Nomad on August 14, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I heard similar efforts yesterday by a ‘catholic nun’ on O’Reilly’s show on FOX as to what Matthews is attempting here: using “the poor” to exploit “what Jesus said” (note they always use past-tense) to urge and demand Marxism.

They always rely on a pretense of some vast economic prowess they control while they denigrate, especially and particularly, Paul Ryan who is an economist and Mitt Romney who is a proven expert using economics (so he can reasonably be called “an economist” in that sense, he’s proven he understands economics far better than most people, if only by his actions in “economic” areas and function).

Catholicism expressly states that Marxism is antithetical to Christianity. And what Jesus SAYS is that He asks us, each as individuals, to engage in charity, otherwise defined as “love”, and that we are not to steal, lie, squander financial resources. And that “the poor you will always have with you…”

The ‘nun’ yesterday on FOX was speaking the same LEFT, MARXIST POLITICAL VIEWS as does Matthews and others like them: they exploit Christ, Catholicism and Christianity to push for increased nationalism, a “government-dispensed” support for all so, as they rationalize, no one will then be “poor”. Just send everyone monthly checks that pay for their needs and feed and house them and treat their ills and then everything’s a Marx Utopia “because that’s what Jesus said” or similar dishonesty.

This is how the liberal thinks in a nutshell. Right from the horses a**, er mouth.
“The way to get rich people to work harder is to give them more money”.
“The way to get poor people to work harder is to screw them”.
Who’s money is it? Liberals think that your money belongs to the government. If the government lets you keep more of your money this is bad. All government money is good and all private money is bad!
Case closed, so give us more of your money or else.

LeftCoastRight on August 14, 2012 at 11:44 AM

Actually, yeah, that’s pretty much what they think. The rich run the corporations and the government in one big collusive ball designed to maximize their wealth by draining from people who don’t have any money to begin with (follow THAT logic), and we vote conservative because we are duped by Fox News and Rush Limbaugh into voting against our own interests.

“I, like millions of young people in America, read Rand’s novels when I was young. I enjoyed them. They spurred an interest in economics, in the Chicago School and Milton Friedman, but it’s a big stretch to suggest that a person is therefore an Objectivist.

I reject her philosophy. It’s an atheist philosophy. It reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview. If somebody is going to try to paste a person’s view on epistemology to me, then give me Thomas Aquinas, who believed that man needs divine help in the pursuit of knowledge. Don’t give me Ayn Rand.”

Teachers unions and local county employees have justified increased teachers’ salaries BECAUSE “they have to contend with the summer vacation” months of not working.

Thus, the entire argument there for high/er teachers’ salaries is kaput. If they’re going to be drawing more money in the summer from the taxpayers, the taxpayers should deny ongoing demands for higher salaries. Something like that, anyway.

I don’t think so this is not about race this is about “us” those of us who make up the United States….

hell it even includes the illegal immigrants who use fake social security numbers to work.

You have approximaterly 12.5% of every check taken by the United States government in the name of two horribly flawed “retirement programs”…..

that is what you see, but the next time they beat the drum for a minimum wage hike driving the US further and further from global competitiveness for low skilled labor understand something….

that 12.5% you don’t see….

The democrat party foisted a set of programs on the people that took 25% of the average Americans wages to foist upon them two substandard retirement mechanisms. The lie was that the politicians could be trusted to maintain the integrity of those withholdings with the understanding that they would protect us in our twilight or if we were knocked out of the workforce early.

People like me who grapsed the math were saying for the last 40 years the programs were a ponzi scheme because of Congressional accounting that politicians simply could not be trusted to not riad the cookie jar to cut IOUs.

What Barack Obama did is even more insiduous, he took form the aggregate pools of the denied wages and he used it as a biggy bank to leverage his ego program to game the CBO enough to get a good score.

He weakened an already vulnerable non voluntary program.

Barack Obama stole 716 billion and rising of every minimum wage worker to every movie stars’ money.

Barack Obama proved what was said about the program all along, you cannot trust politicians not act like politicians with YOUR money. Any American can fund a better retirement return with 25% of their wage than the feds offer.

Their very stewardship removes genuine market pressures and incentives from any program they touch and the big two are no different.

Barack obama took from one pile added to another pile and says both piles are still whole.

Barack Obama and the media want YOU to believe that no bid government contracts are evil when Bush does them because it hides cost and leads to fraud, but he steals from the American taxpayer’s retirement plans and then gives outright gifts to chosen businesses on his way to a 1.7 trillion dollar deficit.

Barack Obama why did you steal 716 billion from my waitress, why did you harm Medicare that I am paying for for my retirement because YOU make me?

You simply cannot be trusted, give the money back to the people and let the people have control of their won wages.

Let America work.

It’s anodyne to many people to say Matthews is a fringe TV presence and off his rocker, etc. but I wonder if the GOP understand how systemically deranged the Left has become and how Matthews represents this madness. I circulate among the harcore academic Left and the truth is they ALL think Paul Ryan is like some kind of monster prodigy from a TV sitcom, the incarnation of Alex P. Keaton or suchlike.

I don’t have any sense that Republicans at the management levels in this country apreciate or have truly internalized the depth of Leftist lunacy and the commitment of its depravity. I think Romney and Ryan are still in a position to be stunned by it. Which is astonishing and inexcusable.

rrpjr on August 14, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Here’s the basic formula that the Left needs to be repeatedly reminded of:

– Wealthy or “resource creating” people are necessary in order to have “money for the poor.”

No wealthy and/or resource creating individuals and their commercial enterprises, no more money for the poor.

The Left, instead, continues to preach some irrational notion that there has to be “more money for the poor” while “less money” for those who generate profits. It’s an utter failure of the less fit among us, it’s like a disease that’s taken hold among some people that’s called “self destruction while destroying others”.

Exactly.

Barack Obama passed Obamacare to “help the people” by FORCING them to buy from private HMOs under penalty of law moving money from the working poor to big business.

He passed it by stealing from the involuntary withholdings of the working poor and above to fund the punishment of their struggling to make their own way because what they really want and brag about to kos is wanting single payer.

A system where THEY control your health destiny which is at its core unamerican.

Barack Obama steals from poor Americans to enrich his donors.

By the time you have debunked one false attack, they have two more out there swirling around in ads and the media repeating it.

The aim is to overwhelm the responses, so you can’t keep up with them.

Envy is regarded by most people as a petty, superficial emotion and, therefore, it serves as a semihuman cover for so inhuman an emotion that those who feel it seldom dare admit it even to themselves … That emotion is: hatred of the good for being the good.

Keaton or suchlike.

rrpjr on August 14, 2012 at 11:50 AM

I’ve worked among and been lectured by similar people all my life. None of them have any logical positions and none of them will ever offer to go without their own salaries, perks and advantages if and when a “poor” person or population is actually in contact with them.

Go to any college, university campus and you’ll find faculty who will literally close doors in the faces of “the poor” who display greater need than others. Those organizations that employ that faculty will refuse to accommodate “the poor” and on and on…it’s a process of their demands to survive, profit and proliferate and continue to enjoy their Bubbles while they lecture the world on the “evils of profits, survival and proliferation of human beings” who “aren’t the poor”…

Paul Ryan is intellectually capable (and morally capable) and it’s likely that important, valuable quality about him that irritates crusty people in Bubble-Academics and/or Leftmedia, which includes most in entertainment and media industries. But they so enjoy and value their nice toys.

Teach a man to fish, create a conservative

Liberals want to steal our fish

Charlemagne on August 14, 2012 at 11:49 AM

That is good, but don’t forget that liberals also want to charge you a fee for a fishing license, tax the rod, tax the reel, tax the fishing line, tax the bait, regulate inland waterways and charge for their usage, regulate the fuel for the boat as a global warming threat to the environment thus increasing it’s cost as well as taxing that too. You get the idea. It never, ever ends.

Still, the ads are on my TV. I think Obama for America has purchased time on some cable networks at the national level, like ESPN, A&E, USA. I haven’t seen anything from Romney, just a couple of outside anti-Obama ads, very occasionally.

Brian1972 on August 14, 2012 at 11:48 AM

I’m not sure how that works. It doesn’t make sense that he’d run ads in TN (and frankly, it doesn’t make sense for Romney to either), so it must be some national ad buy.

Regardless, even with the dishonest attacks he’s still-at best- only ahead by a few points, so they’re not moving the needle much if at all.

I saw him do that years ago when William Donohue of the Catholic League mentioned her in critical way on his show. Matthews quickly spoke up and mentioned how he liked her book “The Fountainhead”. I suppose he’s sensitive to any libertarians that might watch him, but he’s certainly no fan of her’s. Rand is a useful tool to these leftists for beating up even the slightest fiscally conservative Republican.

Tactic #8. “Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose.”

Tactic #10. “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign.”

Flora Duh on August 14, 2012 at 12:04 PM

changer1701 on August 14, 2012 at 11:59 AM

That is what I think, national ad buy. That means everybody watching Monday Night Football last night saw that ad too, all over the country. I saw it again watching Criminal Minds on A&E.

I think the only pro-Romney ads I have seen have been just a couple of PAC ads on Fox News, very rarely.

Come to think of it, the only times I see Romney campaign ads are in news stories about the ad wars on Fox or on the internet.

I am hoping that Romney, plus the SuperPAC groups, are planning a massive counter strike coming soon.

If they let this get too far ahead of them, they’ll be perpetually on defense and that isn’t good at all.

Brian1972 on August 14, 2012 at 12:06 PM

By the time you have debunked one false attack, they have two more out there swirling around in ads and the media repeating it.

The aim is to overwhelm the responses, so you can’t keep up with them.

Don’t indulge them so much, if at all.

The Left is like an irritating mosquito bite: scratch it and it gets infected and much worse.

The Left is “simply” TRYING to grab the reins of the issue-conversation. They’re trying desperately to be “out front” of the public discourse. Thus, their desperate lies and insane, literally insane, allegations (witness to that, Biden’s outrageously irrational declaration that Romney/Ryan “are trying to put you back in chainsssss…” and the Grandma-Over-The-Cliff disgusting thing along with the rest).

The Left is really, really out of ideas, is functioning below reason and is trying to grab the pretense of leader, which they know they aren’t.

It’s important to stomp the lies down, IMMEDIATELY after they’re made public, but to also not lose the strength of front leadership, which the Right has. Even Obama can’t enunciate any specific sales pitch other than condemning the sales pitch of others, but otherwise, he has nothing other than his own miserable weakness and failures.

He got the memo. Old, stupid, or evil.

Since Ryan’s not old, and it’s hard to tar him with stupid, they’re flogging the evil.

I’d like to see the GOP and Romney campaign adopt its own meme – that the press is a fully paid-up arm of OfA and the DNC. Just push it, push it, all the time, everywhere.

JEM on August 14, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I think Romney and Ryan are still in a position to be stunned by it. Which is astonishing and inexcusable.
rrpjr on August 14, 2012 at 11:50 AM

I have no idea what’s going on with Ryan and Romney personally. They have spent DECADES working directly with rabid leftists. If they truly believe it’s possible to compromise with liberals, then they’d have to be complete idiots. And they’re pretty obviously not retarded, so it can only be a giant charade.

On the other hand, leftists tend to avoid people who work for a living like the plague (because, for all they know, that condition might be contagious.) So there are millions of Americans who ARE in a position to be stunned by unfiltered Communist propaganda.

Unfortunately, what the vast majority of them see is the predigested version of this bile. For all practical purposes, MSNBC is a cable-access channel. ABCNBCCBS Nightly News has about a hundred times Chris Matthew’s audience. And the animatronic mannequins who anchor those shows don’t scream out excerpts from the Commnunist Manifesto. They take bits and pieces of what the apparatchiks have been saying the past week and regurgitate it into a bland pablum. And weeks later, it slowly seeps into the ossified brains of people desperate to pretend they have an opinion about something besides sports and soap operas.

rickv404 on August 14, 2012 at 12:02 PM

I saw on Saturday afternoon, Fox News, the customary strategist vs. strategist debate. The lib tool they had on brought up Rand, the fact Ryan said he is a fan of hers, then hammered on the fact he’s a Catholic and she is an atheist over and over again, like it proves he is a hypocrite, or that Religious Right voters would be turned off by the word “atheist”.

It was the lamest, weakest lib attempt to swipe at Ryan all that day.

Pathetic.

The Media IS Obama.

It is a conspiracy on the scale of the Gotti family.

The news is owned by corporations who gain directly from Democrat administrations, but pointing out these facts makes us look crazy.

The answer is to point out the wildly over the top bias of the media and the fact that unlike the last 40 years where ANY time the President wanted to lay his hands directly on Medicare to move the fund to a new program the media looked the other way.

They may be foolish given what the supreme court says about the law on whether social security or medicare is a “right”…..

it is not….

but by God in heaven like a banker taking your cash it is a a “promise” and in banking a promise is a “trust”….

Barack Obama with the help of the media stole 716 billion dollars from every American, hell the Pressure on Romney to say “Repeal and replace” even works for us in this fight…

the Ryan plan is the ONLY plan to allow people to plan for their own retirement with their own money.

Barack Obama steals from already forcibly taken 25% of America’s true wages to add MORE DEBT.

Barack Obama simply cannot be trusted to protect working Americans’ tax money.

The tax money you NEVER get back in a refund.

The Tax Money all Americans pay by their understanding.

Long and short game, this is a winner folks.

Even if Obama “wins” with Press bias this go around this *is* the beginning of the end of the taxes as stash politics of envy.

Just how long will it take.

Barack Obama stole 716 billion so he could use our taxes to pay for imaginary solar panels, and force Americans to buy Volts one day.

He blocks our getting back to work by making energy cost more reducing our competitiveness.

Let America Work
