Video: Romney, Ryan play offense on Medicare in 60 Minutes appearance

posted at 10:41 am on August 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

According to the ever-accurate E-Mail Outrage Sensor, CBS edited this clip when the Romney/Ryan interview went to air, although I wouldn’t know.  I didn’t watch 60 Minutes last night because … well, I don’t watch 60 Minutes at all (and I suspect that’s also true of most of the e-mailers).  However, if it’s true that the show didn’t use the last part of the clip, maybe they were saving it for the network news tonight, or for their morning show today?  After all, Schieffer isn’t a correspondent for 60 Minutes, so I assume the use of excerpts of this interview on last night’s show was as hastily arranged as the interview itself, and perhaps meant to promote a bigger platform.

It’s good news, though, that the 60 Minutes audience got a chance to see this swipe at the Mediscaring that had already begun over the weekend after Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan for his running mate.  It turns out that Ryan and Romney both agree that the best defense is a good offense:

Romney answered critics who say Ryan’s Medicare plan will hurt the ticket’s chances, especially in Florida.

“There’s only one president that I know of in history that robbed Medicare, $716 billion to pay for a new risky program of his own that we call Obamacare,” Romney said.

“What Paul Ryan and I have talked about is saving Medicare, is providing people greater choice in Medicare, making sure it’s there for current seniors. No changes, by the way, for current seniors, or those nearing retirement. But looking for young people down the road and saying, “We’re going to give you a bigger choice.” In America, the nature of this country has been giving people more freedom, more choices. That’s how we make Medicare work down the road.”

This is the part that readers claim was edited out of the broadcast, which if true would be journalistic malpractice:

Ryan added, “My mom is a Medicare senior in Florida. Our point is we need to preserve their benefits, because government made promises to them that they’ve organized their retirements around. In order to make sure we can do that, you must reform it for those of us who are younger. And we think these reforms are good reforms. That have bipartisan origins. They started from the Clinton commission in the late ’90s.”

Ryan’s plan doesn’t affect those already eligible for Medicare.  In fact, one of the conservative criticisms of the plan was that he didn’t give current Medicare recipients the option to choose a private-insurance plan, as younger Americans will get once they become eligible.  That’s a pretty newsworthy detail, no?

The Ryan budget proposes the partial privatization of Medicare by turning it into a premium-support system within a federal exchange, where insurance companies compete for business while meeting coverage requirements.  That’s really no different than Medicare Advantage, which puts market power into cost control and gets the government out of paying providers over a period of several years.  It’s not a perfect solution, as it maintains the third-party-payer system that interferes with pricing signals, which is the main problem driving the cost spiral.  However, it’s as close as we can get to a good political solution, since there is absolutely no support for dismantling Medicare entirely, and it at leastlessensthe problems of price-signal opacity.

This demonstrates the advantage that Romney gets in picking Ryan as his running mate.  Democrats would have hung the Ryan plan around his neck anyway.  Now Ryan himself gets to answer those attacks on the biggest stage, and the more people hear what Ryan actually proposes, the more apt they are to like it.

Update: The CBS broadcast transcript shows pretty clearly that none of this actually aired on 60 Minutes last night.  The E-Mail Outrage Meter got this one right.

Nice basis for your post, but the 60 Minutes audience didn’t see it. It was edited out for broadcast. Here is CBS’s own transcript of what aired. Will this be corrected soon?

There is no raid, even though the facts prove otherwise. Just ask the media who love me! They’ll tell you all you need to know about it.

CBS may have been able to edit the reference to raiding $700 trillion from Medicare out of one 60 Minutes interview, but they won’t be able to edit it from live GOP Convention speeches, and they won’t be able to censor it from live debates if Romney and Ryan will please reference it on the live debate stage in October.

Come on, Ed. You’re missing the story here.

Agreed. But GOP can’t keep depending on others. Romney and Ryan need to say something. This needs to be confronted at their level.

True, but pointing out that CBS cut this out of the broadcast, along with Ryan’s reference to his mom being “a Medicare senior in Florida” — that they tried to HIDE this information from voters in order to protect barack — will blow it up into an obamamedia scandal and MORE PEOPLE will hear the quotes and get the facts. It is IMPORTANT to do this right now — TODAY! — as the narrative is being set. It will make people understand, going forward, that barack and the media are LYING.

And your point is?

If Team Mittens (or any GOP candidate, for that matter) still think they are going to get anything close to a fair deal from the MSM they are unfit for office.

If every GOP candidate is not recording every interview the give to an MSM outlet, well, they are just too hopeless to be elected (and they won’t be…)

I don’t usually watch “60 Minutes” (we’re usually eating dinner) but I DVR’d this.

Maybe I’m hallucinating, but I swear that part was in there. I remember thinking that I didn’t realize Paul Ryan’s mom lived in Florida.

So I either saw it (I didn’t watch the whole thing) or I read it.

Drudge has this matter now up on his web site near the top. CBS needs to be held to account for this edit. I saw the program on the Internet and Romney’s and Ryan’s comments on Medicare were not shown. This must go viral and hit the airwaves. Romney and Ryan surrogates, and all conservative commentators and broadcasters should be all over this today!

I had seen the clip and read the transcript yesterday afternoon, so when it didn’t show up in the 60 Minutes broadcast I was fuming. I immediately took CBS to task in an email and alerted several conservative radio hosts and bloggers about the omission.

Mr. Duh says that after I alerted Fox & Friends about it this morning they played the clip that was left out in their next segment.

And we need an ad buy on this in the next day or 2. By conventions and debates Ryan would be defined already.

All the ad needs to say is the program is in trouble, and what is President’s Obama’s solution? Obama took 700B from medicare to cram through an Obamacare bill. Maybe a note about how that will raise costs even further, if time permits. Sad faces in the backdrop of course.

Then an energetic Romney and Ryan on the trail, and note that their plan doesn’t take anything from seniors but provides those that are younger with choices that will allow the program to survive beyond the next decade.

Roughly that, in 30 seconds, and on TV in the next few days. Define this now, before we have to chase down ridiclous hyperbolic accusations left and right.

Say, maybe MKH could do a piece with Ed Driscoll or Bill Whittle on this little bit of media malpractice… just a bit with the actual edited out parts, how they were shown as ‘teasers’ and then the after reaction and a bit of talking heads via Skype between them.

Do a PJM/Townhall cross-over piece.

I agree!!! Romney needs a SERIES of ads about what barack AND the media want to HIDE from voters. It’ll make the media a bit more aggressive toward barack to try to “prove” they aren’t biased, and it will cement the narrative that barack and the media LIE and COVER-UP.

They started doing that years ago…I forget the first incident, but I think it was CBS, and they had a fit when they were told that the Republicans would have their own cameras, recording everything including the discussions during the “time outs” and the discussions with the producers during those time-outs.

They finally caved because the Republican’s didn’t cave, and stated “What would you be afraid of”…since than all candidates have their crews their recording and taping everything…

Del Dolemonte on August 13, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Some say that, but I don’t think it’s possible. Liberals are just dying to prove themselves ‘right’ and ‘superior’. We conservatives need the election to save the country, while the Left needs it to validate liberalism. It would be a totally unpopular move, on all counts, and even Obama knows it.

What I foresee is a lot of legal wrangling, with the endless counting of chits, chats, chads, and a crapload of meaningless chit-chat. Racism will be called in, with judges being forced to decide if a person voted against Obama because he/she ‘seemed’ racist. Only a few test cases will be needed.

If it all comes down, at the end, to show the election is valid, Obama’s narcissistic ego will never let him believe it. I anticipate he’ll order the SS to stop any attempt to let a President Romney into the White House, which will entail activation of the 101st, as the duly-elected president has authority to order.

I also expected a defeated Obama to commit suicide two years after he is forced out, unless he becomes head of the UN.

Obama can live with being notorious like is Ted Bundy. Obscurity is something his smug snooty ego could never handle.

Wait, so Obama’s lack of work experience is a bad thing that you railed and railed and railed against but Ryan’s obvious lack of work experience is okay?

Ha ha ha ha ha okay whatever you say.

harlekwin15 on August 13, 2012 at 12:55 PM

Update: The CBS broadcast transcript shows pretty clearly that none of this actually aired on 60 Minutes last night. The E-Mail Outrage Meter got this one right.

Are you looking for something more than that R T?

CitizenEgg on August 13, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Yes. I am waiting for Ed to correct his post, which says:

It’s good news, though, that the 60 Minutes audience got a chance to see this swipe at the Mediscaring that had already begun over the weekend after Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan for his running mate.

That is inaccurate. The audience did not see it. It was edited out. This is a simple factual correction. I don’t understand the delay.

They are supposed to post the whole transcript.

They left it on the floor.

The editor at CBS news sees what the trolls don’t….

BOOM!

Thanks CBS you just acted as a target marking smoke round….

you got vampires on the way boys!

harlekwin15 on August 13, 2012 at 12:56 PM

In addition to his McDonald’s and Oscar Meyer job, Ryan also worked as a waiter and a fitness trainer while he was in college. He worked as an intern and a staff economist for a senator, and he worked as a marketing consultant for his family’s construction business.

Looks like you lose the talking points game again Drywall.

Flora Duh on August 13, 2012 at 12:46 PM

You just wrote “McDonald’s and Oscar Meyer job” and “waiter and a fitness trainer” and “marketing consultant for his family’s construction business”.

Yes, these are jobs.

Now imagine Obama with such a resume. And judge it. You’d laugh your right wing a*s off your chair.

I was so right to want him of the final 3 in ’08….

Mitt YOU ARE A GENIUS SIR!

harlekwin15 on August 13, 2012 at 12:57 PM

OK. See the correction. It belongs in the headline, in red, like other updates. The headline is inaccurate. They did NOT “play offense on Medicare” because it wasn’t aired. It was edited out. It is just incredibly important to take hold of this NOW while the obamamedia is trying to set the “Ryan kills old people” narrative. He’s not, they know it, and they don’t want VOTERS to know it.

Rational Thought on August 13, 2012 at 12:58 PM

ITS TIME the Republican’s started asking the obvious question of these alphabet networks for explanantion. Just ask the question.

The RNC must send a formal request to 60 mins for explanation as to WHY THEY OMITTED the part about Paul Ryan’s mother being a medicare enrollee.

They must do this everytime the bias is obvious.

ASKING the “WHY”- is more important than calling them out as biased. Put the responsibility on them by asking WHY they do these things- rather then letting them off the hook with the otherwise assumed and accepted biased slant they have.

THEN ASK Boob Scheiffer if it is ALL RIGHT to mention that Paul Ryan’s mother is on the plan he is assumed of wanting to kill – in their next interview.
The media is very easy to outsmart… at least those without “advanced degrees” of course.

You’re so mad that Ryan is the ultimate Washington insider and that it’s going to hurt him. No matter how much you shine that turd, Mittens can’t say Ryan being a DC lifer is awesome while all other DC lifers are hacks.

At least I have the bal*s to say (again) Obama’s pre-POTUS resume was a bit thin.

You just keep chugging the koolaid in a pouty huff.

Dave why are you holding up a man who was raised by his banker grandma and rich grandpa as the “worker’s shield and raised by wolves” and you are slagging a man who was left to comb his Alzheimer’s grandma’s hair on his way to High school after his dad died as an inexperienced rich boy?

Why do you hate the working class enough to raid 716 billion of their automatic withholding for a new debt bomb?

BOOM!

Game on YOU are going to get shredded when we start hitting back Ryan is every guy not from the Ivy league who met his family duty with honor.

See you in November tiger

harlekwin15 on August 13, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Romney: “Private sector experience is crucial”

Ryan: “Wait, Mittens – I have none of that. I’ve only ever worked in government in Washington since university. I have no idea what the private sector is like.”

Romney: “Don’t worry we’ll spin the sh*t out of that glaring weakness into a positive.”

Ryan: “Okay, Mittens.”

No, actually I respect someone who has held a job, no matter how menial some people may think it is.

What I don’t respect is someone who has held a job, yet hypocritically looks down his nose at those who own a business.

1) Right, so professors who teach people sh*t that helps them get jobs don’t create jobs. Right. Law students go to university so they can drive hotdog trucks around. Right. But just to confirm, you’re saying that the prereq for POTUS is experience in job creation?

2) Obama was, is, will always be a C- President. He was a big tough talker and then Wall Street and the hacks around him cut them off.

3) Confirm or deny: Ryan is a career politician who jumped immediately from university into the Dc cesspool.

Dave Rywall on August 13, 2012 at 1:07 PM

A simple :30 second ad that links and hits Obama and the media:

“This is what 60 Minutes didn’t want you to hear…” [repeat censored clips]

Your national media, censoring and misreporting. Why?”

We need to take on these corrupt malicious clowns — all of them –NOW.

They teach collectivism and other Utopian crap.

CBS would never sell them that time slot. And if the boy king had already bought a spot during that slot, he’d cancel his ad just to keep Romney from airing his.

Hey donks you finally found the one thing a majority of Americans can agree on!

You handed it to us!

“Politicians cannot be trusted to deliver on the security of our automatic withholding”

and since there is NO WAY anyone would accept the across the board 25-50% taxation minimum it would take to pay for your collectivist dreams….

We’ve got you dead to rights.
