Video: Hecklers try to climb onstage at Ryan event in Iowa

posted at 5:21 pm on August 13, 2012 by Allahpundit

If only his party affiliation were different, this would be a shining lesson for the media in how a rotten tone set at the top can drive the rank-and-file over the edge. Ah well.

Handled with aplomb by the candidate, but still uncomfortable to watch:

Ryan had barely begun speaking when a woman shouted, “Are you going to cut Medicare?”

Two women rushed the stage, and one was apparently arrested by three Iowa State Patrolmen after getting on stage with a banner.

“Woah…hey…alright…she must not be from Iowa,” said a dumbfounded Ryan as the woman got on stage.

The officers bounded out from behind the stage to pull her down, saying “She just punched a volunteer.”

As the boss emeritus notes on Twitter, USA Today describes the crowd reaction today as “spirited.” More from Jim Geraghty, who’s seen the Democrats run enough plays over the years that he can predict their defensive set for Ryan:

In the national media narrative – perhaps best illustrated by the shorthand of Jay Leno’s monologue, which presumes that the audience has the barest-bone familiarity with national figures – every Republican figure is reduced to one of three things: Old, stupid, or evil.

George H.W. Bush: Old. Dan Quayle: Stupid. Newt Gingrich: Evil. Pat Buchanan: Evil. Bob Dole: Old. George W. Bush: Stupid. Dick Cheney: Old and evil. John McCain: Old. Sarah Palin: Stupid…

Because Paul Ryan isn’t old, we will see an effort to paint him as either stupid or evil. You and I know that painting Paul Ryan as stupid is like trying to paint Bill Clinton as chaste. But we have also witnessed the rapid definition of an unknown Republican figure four years ago, and we know that right now, every Democratic official, commentator, talking head, and more than a few reporters awaken this morning with a new mission in life: define Paul Ryan.

He’s got to be evil, if only by process of elimination. The angry spectacle here makes me wonder whether hecklers might play a part in O’s strategy to define Ryan out of the chute over the next few weeks. The people in the clip appear to be freelancers — they’re the same progressive group that heckled Romney in Iowa last year — but that doesn’t mean the next hecklers have to be. Remember, according to no less than Nancy Pelosi, the people who showed up at the Democrats’ health-care townhalls in August 2009 to complain were astroturfers whose job was to create a false perception of popular opposition to ObamaCare. (Three years later, popular opposition to ObamaCare is a political fact of life.) This is how the Democratic leadership thinks. They’d like nothing more, I’m sure, than to see some irate protesters getting in Ryan’s face over Medicare at one of his events so that the media has a piece of useful viral vid to run with, and we already know how low Democratic campaigns are willing to stoop to harass Republican candidates. So why not send out some boisterous hecklers, to convince undecideds that this Paul Ryan character they’re hearing about is evidently so evil that average Americans might be driven into a sputtering rage by hearing him talk about premium support? It’s sound optics and efficient demagoguery. O’s inner circle might not be good at governing, but they’re good at that at least.

Exit question from the Obama campaign’s Tumblr account: “In case you missed all the excitement this weekend: Meet Paul Ryan, who is actually the worst.”

At the end of the day, this race is basically Tea Party patriots against OWS trash.

They are dirty, nasty, mean and smelly.
We conservatives are respectful and clean.

Gosh, I can’t wait for ovember it is really getting exciting now.

OT: Here in New Hampshire the new UNH/WMUR “Poll” is out. Bad news for O’bama.

It was done before he picked Ryan, so that is not a factor.

This is the 3rd UNH/WMUR “poll” done since April; the April one had O’bama leading by 9.

The July 15 one had O’bama losing over half of his lead, and had him up over Romney by 4.

This new one has O’bama losing one point, and now it’s within the margin of error. 49-46.

But most troubling for O’bama, Romney now leads NH among working women. He still trails badly among college educated women, but “working women” make up 2/3 of NH’s female population.

No link yet, as this just came out at 6 PM. But it polls likely voters (like Ras), and was done over a much longer period of time than most “polls”-10 days.

I just read elsewhere that Ryan does not get Secret Service protection until he is officially the nominee in a couple weeks. I don’t think that’s correct, is it?

I have to wonder about the Secret Service. When I was at the Norfolk, Virginia rally, Moveon.org had a plane flying a banner message stating keep Mitt out of our pockets. The plane kept flying very close to the staging area for the whole time of the event. Why would Secret Service allow it to happen? How about if it wasn’t just a Moveon.org stunt but someone who wanted to do harm?

found this today; thought it appropriate re: Obama

And many more Destructions played
In this ghastly masquerade,
All disguised, even to the eyes,
Like Bishops, lawyers, peers, or spies.

Last came Anarchy: he rode
On a white horse, splashed with blood;
He was pale even to the lips,
Like Death in the Apocalypse.

And he wore a kingly crown;
And in his grasp a sceptre shone;
On his brow this mark I saw -
‘I AM GOD, AND KING, AND LAW!’

I also saw this headline at The Hill: Mitt Romney cancels Florida campaign stop, citing exhaustion.

I followed their link to the Orlando Sentinel and saw this name: Jeff Bechdel, Florida communications director for the campaign. Now, if indeed Bechdel said this, the senior Romney communications person need to take him to task and set up some guidelines. This was a stupid thing to say.

I looke at Bechdel’s twitter photo. He is a baby who looks as if he’s about 17.

Like I said, Romney senior personnel need to do something about people like Bechdel and Andrea Saul—too young and inexperienced to be visible in a national campaign.

If the names from http://www.p2012.org/candidates/romneyorggen.html are current, these are some of the people who need to get things is hand.

Communications Director: Gail Gitcho
Director of Rapid Response: Webber Steinhoff
War Room Director: Brian Bartlett

There are also others who are more senior.

With the goons of Obama and the feelings daddy’s sugar may be on short supply in the future, I am thinking I would want to be fitted for a Kevlar vest if I am Rx2.

hillsoftx on August 13, 2012 at 5:27 PM

Yes, and …

When Santorum came to Tucson I was up front. I’m here to tell ya he had ex SF dudes that were wired for sound. Not knocking Ryan, just making a suggestion. No way that would have happened at the event I was at. If I scratched my forehead, Rambo for real was looking me square in the eye.

wolly4321 on August 13, 2012 at 5:52 PM

yes. I seriously hope Team Romney and Ryan takes the security aspect closely to heart, even with the supposed Secret Service. Pity that the SS has shown itself to be not terribly serious about their jobs. I wouldn’t trust them if I were in that position.

CW on August 13, 2012 at 7:54 PM

No, I’m one of the simpletons who believe you fire or re-assign bad or inexperienced PR flacks. (If you’d followed the thread you might have noticed. Or not.)

Pretty simple.

And as for it “being hard to fire people in government” — Romney isn’t in government, yet. He wants to be. But with people like Andrea Saul “managing” his message, he might not be.

After the Republican Revolu-you-know-what, a caller asked his if he thought the liberals were finished. He laughed and said no, when they’re down, that’s when they’re the most damgerous and when you need to fear them the most.

I think these sick (insert plural verb/noun which also conveys the act of copulation) are capable of anything.

“Bipolar II disorder is a treatable condition that affects parts of the brain controlling emotion, thought and drive and is most likely caused by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.”

Genetic and environmental factors–those would be Jesse Jacka$$on and $hitcago respectively, right?

burrata on August 13, 2012 at 7:29 PM

Not insanity. The “I have a treatable illness” plea.

Jaibones on August 13, 2012 at 8:15 PM

Why would Secret Service allow it to happen? How about if it wasn’t just a Moveon.org stunt but someone who wanted to do harm?

Christina_M on August 13, 2012 at 7:05 PM

The Secret Service canNOT be relied upon to protect Romney, Ryan or and Republicans anymore. They are just another degenerate government employees now. There are exceptions in SS , but thats all they are, exceptions. I won’t be surprised if SS has been ordered by Hussein+Holder to stand down in case ….

burrata on August 13, 2012 at 7:10 PM

Agree, but Romney can afford to and should pay for his and Ryan’s private security, even using his own finances…I agree that trusting SS 100% would be a mistake for Romney and Ryan…just back the SS up with a bunch of private security guards…

jimver on August 13, 2012 at 8:16 PM

a caller asked “Limbaugh”

hawkdriver on August 13, 2012 at 8:17 PM

I have to wonder about the Secret Service. When I was at the Norfolk, Virginia rally, Moveon.org had a plane flying a banner message stating keep Mitt out of our pockets. The plane kept flying very close to the staging area for the whole time of the event. Why would Secret Service allow it to happen? How about if it wasn’t just a Moveon.org stunt but someone who wanted to do harm?

Christina_M on August 13, 2012 at 7:05 PM

Maybe the SS was hoping it would crash…..heh….oh, sorry…

There is NOTHING I wouldn’t put past the Deathocrats.

The party that promotes Death at every opportunity.

Whether its supporting the death of 45 million babies in the womb since 1973 or the President wanting old people to take a pill or consider hospice and just die already.

Democrats promote it along with all other forms of mayhem (gird your loins republicans)……

It’s one of the bet cross-training methods there are, or so they say anyways…one of my friends is doing it currently and he says it’s pretty doable, it’s just that he sticks to it almost maniacally which made him a bit anti-social lately (the program requires exercising 6 days a week)… and I understand that the nutrition part of it is not too extreme either…I really want to try it after I return from vacation, sometimes at the end of Sep….90 days can’t be too bad…

Del Dolemonte on August 13, 2012 at 6:56 PM

College educated women with the most insignificant liberal arts majors… so in other word no real education, no useful education, just arrogance and stupidty…

Romney is going to win New Hampshire…
