Romney/Ryan haul: $3.5 million in 24 hours

posted at 12:31 pm on August 12, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

How did America react to Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate?  According to the one measure that literally counts … pretty spectacularly.  The online fundraising for the 24-hour period following Ryan’s addition to the ticket came to $3.5 million, according to the Twitter feed of campaign spokesperson Andrea Saul:

Bear in mind that this is online only.  That’s roughly equivalent to the pace one would see from a month in which the combined Romney/RNC effort raised $105 million, with big-ticket fundraisers included.  It’s not quite as dramatic as the amount of money pulled in after the Supreme Court’s decision on ObamaCare ($4.6 million), but it’s close.

I contacted a source close to the campaign, and got the details:

  • Donors: over 41,000
  • Average donation: $85
  • Website visits: 700,000

The campaign saw an interesting phenomenon after the Ryan announcement.  Over 30% of the visits came from mobile devices, something the source tells me the campaign has never seen before in this cycle.  It shows that the selection of Ryan may have some significant upside among younger voters who may relate more to Ryan than to Obama, Joe Biden, and the administration that has cratered job prospects for this demographic over the last three years.

The campaign has a new web video out today featuring the newest team member and his introductory speech:

Looks like the subtext of this campaign will be: Real Hope from Real Change.  If the fundraising numbers give any indication, it looks as though America’s ready to reward seriousness.

All I see from the trolls here is an attempt at suppressing Conservative votes, pushing reasons for us to stay home.

With the choice of Ryan, Romney proves he can be a great leader. Great leaders, and CEO’s for that matter, choose to surround themselves with the smartest people in the room.
Unlike President Obama, who chose to try to pass himself off as the smartest person in the room.

VegasRick on August 12, 2012 at 1:19 PM

It is all they have and the Ryan pick is their worst nightmare. They can no longer avoid the topics if they want to demagogue Ryan’s plans. The VP debate will be glorious and if Ryan’s facts and figures can somehow make it into Romney’s head, so will the other debates! The press will have to follow Ryan now instead of covering up his full plans.

I am glad he has picked Ryan, now we can all rally behind this ticket, right? Maybe the food fights will slow down, after all, this is the ticket now!

Wait…what??? Um…you may be confusing me with another Stonekrab. I have been in the AF since late 02…not sure what’s unbelievable about that…10 year mark in about 2 weeks. “Ghosting” by the way is when you get a place off-base, but don’t get BAH because “technically” you don’t have enough rank to get out the dorms yet. So you keep your room, but none of your stuff is there, it’s just clean and empty. It’s not illegal, it’s just frowned upon, because that rule is in place to keep you out of debt.

Looks like the subtext of this campaign will be: Real Hope from Real Change. If the fundraising numbers give any indication, it looks as though America’s ready to reward seriousness.

One of the phrases out of yesterday’s event that struck a chord was that America offers equal opportunity not equal outcomes. That alone must have struck fear in the hearts of those still trying to defend the “you didn’t build that” gaffe.

And I do think Americans are ready for serious candidates. The ones who talk about the issues instead of the sex lives of slutty law students or manufactured stories about the death of some union member’s wife.

Basically, you were right, Mitt Romney does actually care about more than his own political ambition. And for once, I actually like Mitt Romney.

VegasRick on August 12, 2012 at 12:52 PM

Why? I’m the positive one. I actually thought Romney was doing fine before he picked Ryan.

Ryan, as I have stated previously, is no game changer. There is no real difference between his postions, and the positions on which Romney has been running from day one. This is a doubling down, an assertion, a confirmation, an FU to Barack Obama. A confident Romney made this choice, not a frightened guy caving to his base.

The only thing I think Romney caved on was the timing. Friday. Mid August. Mid Olympics. The timing is weird. Gets the tax thing off the front pages, tho.

Actually, this could be setting the stage for even MORE boldness to come.

Instead of making his VP pick the centerpiece of the Convention, Romney announces the Ryan pick a month ahead of time. That leaves time to consolidate this ticket as the status quo, and either hammer home entitlement reform or maybe even set up another bombshell for the convention.

How is the timing off? It is not mid-Olympics (they end today). It is mid-August but I’d remind you that we are just two weeks out from the GOP convention. If we’re going to have that kind of debate, how about we Conservatives have a ‘Dumbest Troll’ contest, with a page like for the OOTW.

Instead of making his VP pick the centerpiece of the Convention, Romney announces the Ryan pick a month ahead of time. That leaves time to consolidate this ticket as the status quo, and either hammer home entitlement reform or maybe even set up another bombshell for the convention.

logis on August 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Two weeks ahead of the convention. And I suspect that we will be seeing the R&R team going on the offensive in certain areas. Obama will throw up Sandra Fluke and Mitt Romney as a carcinogen. They ignore discussing entitlement reform, deficit spending, and the economy at their own peril.

I’m sure Joy Behar is already preparing her snotty remarks- My bet is she’ll go after Ryan’s wife.

No way! Check out Janna Ryan’s resume. Wellesley grad (like Hillary and Diane Sawyer) and GWU law school. My bet is that they will be fawning over an interview with her…

Just got an email from Paul Ryan, and that alone was enough to get me to go to Romney’s site an buy a Romney-Ryan t-shirt (I already donated and bought some bumper stickers and what not yesterday). This is the biggest election since 1980 guys, let’s make sure we put Ryan and Romney over the top.

john1schn on August 12, 2012 at 2:14 PM

sigh…you guys are doing it wrong. The youth (me being one of them) likes cool, and discovering something or someone new is “cool”, like The President was in 07 – 08. People were talking about Obama in the dorms as early as 05 – 06. Now, what’s not cool is having someone tell you something is “cool”…that’s essentially what this is: “Watch this video son I found it on the Youtubes…their talking to you guys! Make it go virus son and tell your besties about R Squared!” LOL!

StoneKrab on August 12, 2012 at 1:31 PM

Ok, if you be one of those terrible youts /, then you can be the ambassodor for figuring it out! You are right that we don’t want to be saying “hey son, watch this!” But, I think this video would change a lot of votes among the thinking youth, so by getting it to be widely viewed among all age groups it would have the collateral effect of having a lot youths viewing it as well. And, on the URL, in my last comment I had the “info” aspect equal to “RyanYouthVote,” so that is definitely wrong, so I’ll repost: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xwv5EbxXSmE&info=RyanIsCool
OK, lol, if you actually link to the video, change the “RyanIsCool” to “RyanOnOurFuture” or something.

Not necessary. You say you’re in the Air Force. Not me to say you’re not. One thing though, don’t have a cow over the “ten years”. I said over when it was just under. That wasn’t even worth a point in you return comment.

It just struck as odd that you went on another thread about how the military was so bias against soldiers who are more liberally inclined. But it appeared by your comment here, you were away from the flagpole in 05-06. That’s a great way to do your time in if you can swing it.

libfreeordie on August 12, 2012 at 2:03 PM

Except your precious Obama is most often captured as frowning, sneering, and/or has his arrogant nose in the air.

You adore him, but he has decided he thinks he’s better than you. Not even Bill Clinton looked down on you, let alone Conservative presidents. This one is the first; you rate to him no higher than I do.

And I’m okay with that. You’re the supportive fool, and I’m the one to vote against him.

I think what really bugs you sanctimonious liberals is that I laugh at you all the time. I have tons of fun at your expense, and I’m always smiling when you lose yet another destruction of your own creation. The only sad part is, when you liberals inevitably fail, you seek to take everyone else with you.

That aside, you’re really all a joke. You liblets are your own punchline.

And the best part is that you’re all too arrogant to see it. Hence, my endless mockery of you.

I’m having a great day here. How about you?

Nice ROE there, President Obama. The Taliban or HIG mortar team that the 82ND wasn’t allowed to engage because of the “unobserved indirect fire” rule in the ROE approves.

This used to be one on my guys when I was in the CAB.

The only thing I think Romney caved on was the timing. Friday. Mid August. Mid Olympics. The timing is weird.
Mr. Arkadin on August 12, 2012 at 1:54 PM

Agreed. I love the choice of Paul Ryan, but he is the kind of choice that needs to be favorably introduced to the public before the Democrats can define him. That requires a massive advertising blitz, but Romney can’t use any of the millions he’s raised in the last couple of months until after the convention… which means Paul Ryan is basically going to get bombarded by Obama for the next two weeks until convention. It will be up to the RNC and the Super PACs to blunt those attacks, but that’s a kind of risky strategy.

Again, I love Paul Ryan as the VP, but I do not understand why he wasn’t announced closer to the convention, when Mitt would soon after be able to use the general election funds to introduce Ryan to the nation.

Lawdawg86 on August 12, 2012 at 2:25 PM

logis on August 12, 2012 at 2:04 PM

knowing the businessman he is, it’s probably the latter…discussing entitlement reform could be too, but remember it’s the media that defines what we are talking about, and if they decide to kardashianize Ryan, instead of having a real debate on policy issues, they will do it, they will do everything in their power to distract from real issues…though something tells me that with Ryan they’re out of luck, he does not seem good entertainment material to me, too serious and intellectually driven for that…and he ain’t rich either to distract with that and to fuel the Dim class warfare shtick, but then of course he will kill grandma…and so the fun begins…

That’s a little unfair and intellectually dishonest to place this square on the shoulders of the President, without mentioning the President that sent us there to begin with. All of this should’ve have been cleaned up long before Senator Obama became President Obama. But, I seriously did not come here on this fine Sunday morning to talk foreign policy, because I am not at liberty to discuss that, because I am still in.

StoneKrab on August 12, 2012 at 2:27 PM
