The obligatory “mystery charter plane from Boston lands at Paul Ryan’s hometown airport” post

posted at 9:17 pm on August 10, 2012 by Allahpundit

Highly speculative, I know, but it was either this or musings on what the new “Alf” remake portends for civilization. I figured there’s more reader interest right now in the veepstakes than there is in “Alf.” Slightly more.

Is tomorrow the day?

Take note, veep watchers: Earlier today, a charter plane took off in Boston, stopped in Chicago, then flew to the tiny airport in Janesville, Wis. Janesville, of course, is the hometown of Representative Paul Ryan, a top vice-presidential contender. According to a source on the ground, the plane is still in Wisconsin.

Tomorrow morning, Mitt Romney will visit the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Va. For what it’s worth, Ryan is scheduled to be on vacation in Colorado.

That’s Robert Costa, noting that one of Romney’s sons was also in Wisconsin today. My gut tells me that Mitt won’t roll out his VP on a weekend, since it means less media coverage and more distractions for voters. But I would have said the same thing four years ago and that didn’t stop Obama from formally introducing Biden on a Saturday. Another interesting detail: If you look at where the plane in question — number N26SC — has been lately, you’ll see a lot of destinations that would presumably be relevant to Romney advisors and staff. Ohio, Janesville, and Teterboro, New Jersey on Thursday, the same day that Romney was in the state for fundraisers.

One teensy problem, though. Unless I’m misreading this, the plane is based in Monroe, Wisconsin. Seems unlikely to me that that would be the case if it’s a charter that a Boston-based campaign has been using regularly. More likely, it’s a plane owned by some local Wisconsin corporation that the company uses for business and the Ohio/Jersey destinations lately are a pure coincidence. Ah well. Even so, if you want to play around with tracking flights based on VP speculation, the FlightAware website is fun. Keep an eye out for that mystery charter from Boston to Trenton…

Exit question: Who’s up for some Alf?

Ocommie just started hitting Super Mitt pretty hard tonite here in Fla tonite with a Pac Ad whining about the right of contraception crap, planned parenthood- and just you run of the mill Mitt hates women and he will continue the “war on women”- it will be effective.

FlaMurph on August 10, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Here on the West Central Coast we’ve been seeing 2 of those type of ads for about 2 weeks now. They’re nothing but lies and distortions.

The mister has started changing the channel when they come on for fear I’ll throw something through the TV screen.

I like Gov. Jindal also but how much time does he have left as governor. It seems a shame to take away one of the only non-corrupt politicians that state has ever seen.

Is tomorrow the day?

According to Fox News @ 11pm, yes. Still speculating on Ryan.

clancy_wiggum on August 10, 2012 at 11:05 PM

I’m thinking it is Paul Ryan after all….we’ll know in 10 hours.

IrishEi on August 10, 2012 at 11:05 PM

Keep an eye on that plane….it’ll be leaving Janesville for Norfolk early tomorrow morning.

Another fresh indicator:

Weekly Standard at 10:52 pm EDT – Romney Prepares to Pick Ryan, with bylines in both DC and Elm Grove, WI (which, strangely, is NOT part of Ryan’s district, but is in the Milwaukee area)

Steve Eggleston on August 10, 2012 at 11:08 PM

We’ll know at 9:00 A.M. EST. Whether it’s Ryan or not, we’ll see.

What would be the strategery to announce on a Saturday?

The fact that most people aren’t paying attention?

Not sure that’s a winning strategy.

my guess is that within 24 hours of Romney announcing a pick, Obama will one-up him… Biden will be dropped from the ticket and a new, female VP pick will be announced. Obama will do anything to assure all eyes are on him.

rampage on August 10, 2012 at 11:24 PM

If it is Ryan, then what was up with the vacation talk?

And if not, then who? McDonnell?

That plane in Janesville would have to take off by no later than 7 or so tomorrow morning to get to Norfolk and prepped by 9.

Dreadnought on August 10, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Why would you hope this? Paul Ryan is the only republican, the only politician in Washington of any serious credibility that has a long term plan to not just put a band aid on this fiscal mess, but to actually fix it.
About time

NebCon on August 10, 2012 at 11:19 PM

Think of it this way, if you republicans put Romney into the white house and such up his rinoness for 8 years, you then get Paul Ryan as a virtual shoe in, and just maybe we get back to constituional limited government. Just maybe

paulsur on August 11, 2012 at 12:32 AM

From Boston to Chicago then to Janesville, Wisconsin?

It could be Patrick Kennedy’s new shortcut headed from Boston to DC in order “to vote.”

viking01 on August 11, 2012 at 12:42 AM

Stupid. Give up a house seat and committee chairmanship for what? A tiebreaker vote in Senate? And if Mittness somehow chokes in November, Ryan is completely damaged goods. As if he wasn’t already damaged from the umpteen votes for bigger govt under Dubya. Something he never really recanted. And for all his talk about fixing entitlements, one thing it ain’t is bold. In fact his plan to bend the costs takes too damn long which only gives time to the libtards to regroup and come back in a few cycles to finish taking us over the cliff. Meh. If it is indeed Ryan, I’m pretty much commited to voting third party. Congratulations GOP, you just killed yourself. And to think I figured it would take at least till after the convention to come to this point. Just as well, because now we’ll see who all comes out of the woodworker to rah, rah this farce.

Sort of wish Romney had chosen Alf to run with him. Alf would kick Biden’s butt in a debate I’m sure!

TarheelBen on August 11, 2012 at 6:39 AM

I think Romney picked Ryan because it’s fun to say “Romney Ryan” over and over again. Try it, it’s naturally musical.

I suspect it was being used by somebody from the Chicago area.
