Breaking: Romney to announce VP pick tomorrow at 9 8:45 am; Update: NBC says it’s Ryan

posted at 11:22 pm on August 10, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Fresh in the e-mail inbox from Team Romney:

Boston, MA – On Saturday, Mitt Romney will begin his “The Romney Plan For A Stronger Middle Class” bus tour by announcing his choice for Vice Presidential candidate in Norfolk, Virginia. The following events are open to the press. Please note that the tour of the USS Wisconsin and Homemades by Suzanne drop by are pool coverage.

Lest one thinks that Romney’s presence on the USS Wisconsin is just an odd coincidence, here’s what Bill Kristol is hearing:

THE WEEKLY STANDARD has learned that the Romney campaign has begun to prepare a vigorous effort in support of Paul Ryan if he is selected as Mitt Romney’s vice presidential pick—something now likely to happen soon. For example, GOP officials tell THE WEEKLY STANDARD that Wisconsin governor Scott Walker is among a group of Republicans who has been asked to be ready, in terms of his schedule and other practical preparations, to make the case publicly for a Romney-Ryan ticket as early as Saturday.

This of course does not mean the Wisconsin congressman will necessarily end up as Romney’s running mate. The Romney campaign may be working to lay the groundwork for one or two other possible picks, though THE WEEKLY STANDARD has been unable to find evidence of any comparable preparation for other candidates. Or the Romney team could be engaging in some last minute misdirection, as other campaigns have done. In 2000, much of the attention in the days before the announcement of Dick Cheney as Bush’s running mate focused on John Danforth, thanks to nudging from inside the campaign. And in 2004, the New York Post splashed on its front page a story indicating that Richard Gephardt would be John Kerry’s running mate. It’s entirely possible that the Romney campaign is engaging in the same kind of shenanigans.

But if the signs pointing toward Ryan, increasing in number, are meant as a feint, it’s an odd one. Ryan is popular among conservatives and Republicans, and the talk about him is generating lots of excitement in conservative and GOP circles. The campaign would presumably be acting to tamp down Ryan speculation if Ryan weren’t going to be the pick, in order to avoid a sense of letdown if he’s passed over. But the campaign is doing no such thing. Rather, it seems to be preparing observers for Ryan.

Yeah, I don’t see this as a feint, although it might have been a multiple-candidate effort.  Romney has enough problems with conservatives that using Ryan as a red herring to pick Tim Pawlenty or Bob McDonnell would leave a very sour taste with the Tea Party grassroots.  If they’re working with Scott Walker to prepare for the announcement, one has to assume that the running mate will be Ryan — or, long shot, Scott Walker himself.

If it is Paul Ryan, it’s a good choice.  Ryan has solid policy credentials, but also has enough media presence and charm to make people listen.  Team Obama will hang Ryan’s budget on Romney, but they were going to do that anyway.  Why not have the man himself as the VP to explain it?  Ryan also gives the ticket solid Washington experience, while giving conservatives more hope that a Romney presidency will aim for serious change.

That would be the biggest plus for the campaign, which has had to fight Obama’s strategy of distraction.  Ryan’s efforts play the long game on budgets and entitlement reform; he’s one of the few people in Washington talking about not just the fiscal cliff but the long-term fiscal gap I wrote about this week in the Fiscal Times.  Progressives dislike the plan, conservatives fault it for taking too long to balance the budget, but Ryan’s plan is literally the only serious plan on the table to fix that $222 trillion long-term gap.  Ryan adds instant gravitas to the campaign, something that Obama and his team have failed to do despite being the incumbent President of the United States.

If indeed it’s Ryan, even the media may have to start focusing on the most serious issues — and that’s bad news for Obama.

Update: A subsequent e-mail from Team Romney puts the announcement time at 8:45 am, so I changed the headline.

Update II: According to Peter Hamby at CNN, Romney spent the evening calling the VP shortlist candidates, thanking them for their efforts, and telling them they didn’t get the pick.

Update III: Allahpundit just flagged this tweet to me:

Serious question: would NBC get a leak like this?

Ryan is the male version of Palin. Cute and dumb. The press (and SNL) are licking their chops already! This is like deja vu. Remember the excitement over Palin? Game-changer! Young and attractive! Great family! The more I think about it, the more I realize the GOP is literally running the same campaign but with different names slotted in. A milquetoast moderate candidate with an untried, inexperienced VP.

Fingers crossed – Romney/Ryan!

He was nothing much and he was a Senator for a couple of weeks. If you voted for that to be President, STFU about experience.

1. You’re assuming that either of them will campaign on entitlement reform. There’s no guarantee of that. Traditionally, the Veep candidate does what they’re told after being picked, so Ryan’s previous focus is at the mercy of Romney’s campaign.

2. You’re assuming Romney has clear control over his campaign. Recent events demonstrate otherwise.

As to Pawlenty’s record, it lies in his regular use of the veto pen to oppose government-inflating legislation that the State legislature kept trying to pass. It’s direct contrast to Ryan, who voted for government-enlarging measures at the federal level for years.

No offense….scratch that, I hope you’re offended. You are the dumbest poster I’ve ever encountered on this site, and we’ve had more than a few come through here that made Forrest Gump look like a candidate for Mensa.

Paul Ryan is not a perfect politician. He’s cast votes I’m not happy about. But if there is one thing no one on either end of the political spectrum can say about the man, it’s that he’s dumb. Look on YouTube for the Health Care Summit clip where he essentially destroys Obama to his face for 6 minutes by citing the absolutely laughable fake numbers used to garner a deficit reducing score from the CBO. Look very closely at the silent glare coming from Obama the entire time Ryan is talking as he knows he has no response prepared for anything the man is saying to him. By the end of Ryan’s remarks, there is no sane, intellectually honest person on the planet(which I suppose rules you out) who doesn’t at least acknowledge that something doesn’t add up in the President’s claims about deficit neutrality.

Also, “untried, inexperienced”? The dude has been in the House for over a decade. He’s the only person in Congress taking the lead on entitlement reform which if left unaddressed threatens to destroy our economy(and with it the nation) in the next few years. I’ll ask you again. What is Obama’s plan to deal with the hundreds of trillions in unfunded liabilities? And no, trying to wait out the clock until January 20, 2017 so the next President can worry about it is not a solution.

First we showed the way with the Beloved Walker and “Johnson from Wisconsin” in one election, we unleashed the Preibus, and now hopefully Mr. America from Janesville seals the deal.

I hope we still have a chance to save this nation despite the efforts of our historic first communist dictator.

We are the birthplace of the Republican party (Ripon WI), and the conservative renaissance was born here as well. If this nation can be saved we’ll be living in historic times in the center of the new hope-and-change-osphere.

And if we fail… everybody suffers.

Ryan would be a great choice, but in the end the VP choice doesn’t matter, except in the last election when the choice of Palin breathed a little life into the corpse that was the McCain campaign. Little did we know then that whom he should have picked as VP was an exorcist.

No, it’s about who is at the top of the ticket this year and whether Romney is ready to do to Obama what he did to Gingrich and Santorum in the primary. It is now scorched earth, massive wipe-out time. If Romney treats Obama as just a nice guy who’s not quite up to the job, we lose.

He must go after his ideology — “You didn’t build that”, “the private sector is fine”, etc. — which also explains why none of Obama’s initiatives have worked and even made the economy worse, minorities the most hurt, and he must do it with a vengeance and ruthless abandon.

Told ya…

Fox news is treating this like a “fox news alert”. They are even interviewing Brett Baer at what must be midnight on the east coast.

He’s probably giving his report in his underwear in his dining room…

The whole thing is absolutely hilarious…

Romney to announce running mate Saturday in Va.
*************************************************

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney’s campaign says the presumed Republican presidential nominee will announce his running mate Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va.

The short list – if there is one – is believed to include Ohio Rep. Rob Portman, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan.

In a statement issued Friday night, the Romney campaign said the running mate would be revealed at 9 a.m. EDT at the Nauticus Museum. Romney is kicking off a four-day bus tour through swing states.

Romney’s choice comes as he tries to repair an image damaged by negative Democratic advertising and shift the trajectory of a campaign that’s seen him lose ground to President Barack Obama.

The vice presidential selection will dominate headlines, and Romney’s team has been relentlessly teasing the announcement for weeks.

Ryan is probably the smartest of the four. He smoked Obama (and the Mulatto Jesus glared at him).

Sorry Ryan comes across as a very serious guy. And we’ve already seen that there is a possibility that he may ATTRACT female voters away from Obama (and Obama currently has a lead in that department). If Ryan takes away just a few percentage points away from Obama in the Female demographic then Obama is in even deeper doo-doo.

The problems for the Romney campaign would be:

1. Florida and it’s Seniors.

2. That the rollout gets mishandled.

3. That Ryan gets Palinized in the press.

4. Granny/Cliff.

That’s all the negs I can think of: Kudos to Romney if it happens because he didn’t pander by picking Susana Martinez or Jeb Bushs’ VP pick Marco Rubio.

And let’s get real Ryan will never be Speaker. Boehner is going nowhere and Cantor is next in line. Ryan must know that.

God help his family if he’s the pick.

Private plane from Morristown, New Jersey landed in Norfolk on Friday night.

Wait to see more, may not be Paul Ryan.

Herr Hussein Obama’s campaign strategy is inadequate to maintain him in a serious action such as Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will put to him. He has corruption in the coop, hate on the hoof, taqiyya on the tongue and bats in the belfry — that’s his campaign strategy. He can probably maintain himself in the type of fighting Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will give him in Mexifornia and a few states on the North East front. After that it will make no difference how many thousands of dead he has voting for him early and often, and if Americans want America and the Presidency back, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will give it to them.

VorDaj on August 11, 2012 at 12:04 AM

The Ryan decision forces Obama, and the MSM, to fight over BIG things – not the 24-7 distraction small-ball crap.

This is going to electrify the base; and everyone should send Romney some more money to applaud this decision.

Clearly signals they are going all-in in Wisconsin; and it guarantees another senate pickup in Wisconsin; and helps Mandel in Ohio, as well.

A serious Wonk who knows what he is talking about. Just imagine the Biden vs Ryan debate. Wish we could make every voter in America watch that. Should be worth a few points on it’s own.

but at 42 and only having been a Congressman, and with no private sector or military experience, and no executive experience (i.e., Governor), is this someone who is ready and able to step in and be President and face down the tyrants of the world?

Tripwhipper on August 10, 2012 at 11:31 PM

Considering how high Barky and Uncle Joe have set the bar, I’d be willing to take that risk…

Please let it be Ryan.

Mediscare will be on full-attack mode!

Oh, you mean the same Medicare that Obama and the Democrats fully intend to raid and to bankrupt in order to bankroll Obamacare?

I live near Portman. Gonna drive by and see if there’s any activity. Will post an update in a bit.
