The Onion imagines Obama’s next attack ad: Did Romney kill JonBenet?

posted at 6:01 pm on August 9, 2012 by Allahpundit

A small but maybe significant sign that awareness of Team Hopenchange’s sleaziness is breaking out from political media to the wider culture. E.g., Obama campaign spokesman Jen Psaki, who yesterday lied brazenly in claiming that the campaign didn’t know Soptic’s story, was forced to acknowledge today that he, er, once appeared on one of their own conference calls to tell it. A minor retreat, but proof that Obama’s brain trust is starting to feel some heat.

Can the inevitable more-in-sorrow-than-in-anger “Daily Show” takedown be far behind?

“I think this is a fair ad, and I think Mitt Romney owes an explanation to the American people as to why he murdered JonBenét Ramsey,” said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, who called the commercial’s black-and-white reenactment of Mitt Romney carrying a kicking and screaming child to her death “accurate.” “Ultimately, voters need to know who they’re getting with Mitt Romney: a job- and child-killing businessman who is so deceitful he won’t release his tax returns or admit to a senseless murder that shook the nation to its core.”…

Moreover, at the end of the spot a smiling Romney is seen at a campaign event saying, “I killed her, and I had a good time.” Sources from the Romney campaign were quick to announce that the audio and video had been cobbled together from different statements he made during that particular rally.

“Personally, if I killed JonBenét Ramsey, I would have come clean and told the American people that on day one,” Obama’s communication director David Axelrod said on Sunday’s installment of Meet The Press. “But I think that’s a key difference between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Barack Obama never murdered a child, and Mitt Romney did.”

Pitch-perfect on Ax. All that’s missing is Bill Burton in “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for” mode, insisting that the ad in no way accuses Romney of murdering JonBenet despite what your eyes and ears might have told you.

Speaking of Burton, you’ll be pleased to know that he’s proud of how “wildly successful” his smear has been. Four years ago, he thought “false and mean-spirited attacks” polluted politics. Keep on trucking, Bill. Exit question: Where’s all this headed? The campaign’s bound to get nastier but I’m not sure how. I can’t quite believe they’d go after Mormonism, even obliquely, just because it’d be so glaring a betrayal of Bambi’s cuddly 2008 persona that it really might dent his image permanently. Assume they won’t cross that line, if only for fear of blowback. Which other lines will they cross? Via the Daily Rushbo, here’s Rush Limbaugh imagining the final spring in battleground states.

the advertisement asks if anyone can truly remember where Romney was the night of the child’s murder, and whether the U.S. populace wants a president capable of strangling a little girl and dumping her body in her parents’ basement.

I have to admit that I cannot recall where Mitt Romney was that night. /s

They’ll find a former Bain receptionist or an ex-wife of a former associate willing to say she and Mitt had an affair or that Mitt sexually harrassed her, etc. Something along those lines. If they are going to follow the same pattern of attacking his greatest perceived strengths (Mitt will actually cost jobs! Mitt will actually raise taxes!) then an all out assault on his sqeakly clean monogamist/doting husband persona can’t be far behind.

According to sources at Obama’s Chicago headquarters, the “He Did It” commercial is just the first in a new series of attack ads that accuses Romney of drowning actress Natalie Wood in 1981, convincing cult leader David Koresh to burn down the Branch Davidian ranch in Waco, TX, and causing the Challenger disaster.

“I think these ads will end up being very effective,” former Bill Clinton campaign strategist Dick Morris said. “If you are an undecided voter and you are constantly seeing images of Mitt Romney standing over a child’s lifeless body, or, as in the case of the ‘Zodiac’ spot, shooting two high schoolers at point blank range on their first date, that’s a pretty persuasive image right there.”

Added Morris, “This ad very effectively reminds us that no child murderer has ever been elected into the White House.”

W. T. F.

I don’t like a lot of Christie’s views, but at this point, its not even about ideology any more. Mitt needs someone who can cut through the B.S. and land some hard punches on O. We need someone who will go right at Obama’s “likeability” advantage and denigrate him until his character ratings are down in the gutter with Romney. Then this contest can become the referendum on competency that Mitt wants it to be.

Put Christie on the ticket. The ticket badly, badly needs an attack dog, and regardless of what you think of Christie’s ideology, he is undoubtedly the best political brawler we’ve got.

I don’t think that is the reason they’re afraid to talk about Romney’s Mormonism. I think they’ve decided not to bring it up (yet) because they’re afraid it’ll remind people that Obama worshipped for decades in a Black Liberation Theology church, with an anti-American nutjob pastor (and personal Obama mentor).

Also, they probably don’t want to make more voters aware of the fact that Romney was once a missionary. That contrasts pretty poorly against the fact that the Obamas rarely go to church, and don’t celebrate Christmas.

There is no party breakdown, as usual. But there may be a little unintended glimpse. On page 9, it mentioned there was 419 Republicans and Independent leaning Republicans. So out of 1010 people sampled, Republicans and leaners amounted to about 41.5%. Leaving others at 58.5%. There is no data on undecided, but those usually amount to less than 5% in most polls. So Dems and leaning Dems may be around 53.5%. So there may be a possible +12 Dems overweight for a +7 edge for Barry.

bayview on August 9, 2012 at 6:41 PM

sharrukin on August 9, 2012 at 6:17 PM

Today’s Fox Poll is Barry 49, and Romney 40.

The pollster blared headline that Barry’s lead increased and Romney slipped compared to the poll in July. Barry lead increased by 4, and Romney slipped by 1.

The party breakdown is D 44 R 35 I 14 Refused to Identify 6.
for a +9 for Dem on first glance.

But the breakdown from the last poll was
D 42 R 38 I 18 and Refused 3

There were more Dem (+2) surveyed and fewer Republicans (-3) sampled compared to poll July. When one takes into account the sample change and MOE, there may actually be no change whatsoever, in the margin difference between the last poll and this new one.

The number of people who refused to answer party ID has also increased by 3%, who knows how many of those were actually Dems.

And these people who interpret polls are supposed to be trained professional statisticians? But this is not to say that Romeny does not have to pick up his game

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Mitt Romney attracting support from 47% of voters nationwide, while President Obama earns the vote from 43%. Four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

The president enjoyed a bounce immediately following release of last week’s job report. However, the bounce has faded, and the race is back to where it was just before Friday’s report. See tracking history. Following that jobs report, consumer confidence fell to a new 2012 low yesterday and is barely above that low today. Just 24% believe the jobs market has improved over the past year, while 44% believe it has gotten worse.

And speaking of his sleaziness, I’ve watched a few blurbs of his speeches lately and all I can think is “wow”, the guy is really, really, scary. He’s completely delusional, in denial about the state of our union, and he reminds me of a snake oil salesman/eccentric preacher. Just what we need for a COC, right?

scalleywag on August 9, 2012 at 7:32 PM

I agree. He is getting scarier all the time. But it seems that we are the only ones who can see it. It is almost as if one needs a magic decoder ring or something.

Yes, please continue to swallow believe those CNN polls. And tell your friends to do so as well.

squint on August 9, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Unfortunately its mirrored in a Fox poll.

sharrukin on August 9, 2012 at 6:17 PM

The stupid Fox poll is D+9. And the enthusiasm gap is devastating for Obama. Twit.

Basilsbest on August 9, 2012 at 8:03 PM

You know it’s over when the House of Ras flees ship. Lololol

Uppereastside on August 9, 2012 at 6:20 PM

You mean, sort of like the United Mine Workers refusing to endorse lil barry?
Thereby, tacitly endorsing Romney?

Kinda looks like the bloom is off the rose, don’t it, yeasty?

Solaratov on August 9, 2012 at 8:08 PM

The campaign’s bound to get nastier but I’m not sure how. I can’t quite believe they’d go after Mormonism, even obliquely, just because it’d be so glaring a betrayal of Bambi’s cuddly 2008 persona that it really might dent his image permanently.

It will happen. I called it months ago, and I’m popping in from time to time to remind people to watch for this tactic. We already saw pundits like Matthews trying it on a while back to see how well it fit.

Consider: they held on to this “Romney killed my wife” ad for SIX MONTHS. I promise you they already have everything in the hopper that they won’t need to cobble together in rapid response to Romney, and they WILL deploy it based on how much they need to hammer Romney to attain – or maintain – a lead outside the margin of error.

The Schaef on August 9, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Reid is narcophilic.

That’s legal in Nevada, isn’t it? At least for democrats…

Ventura Capitalist on August 9, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Didn’t Romney also start the fire that burned down Chicago?

scalleywag on August 9, 2012 at 8:53 PM

So many people just don’t seem to get it, or care to even try. Bracing for another 4 years.

MT on August 9, 2012 at 9:21 PM

I lol at The Onion add.

Ragnar Danneskold on August 9, 2012 at 9:58 PM

When the Onion sides with conservatives Obama has really screwed up

Grunt on August 9, 2012 at 7:33 PM

Meh, IMO it’s just coincidence. There really is nothing the Onion can say that won’t become reality anymore, short of degrading to tabloid-level titles. The nation is THAT screwed up.

MelonCollie on August 9, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Romney invented cancer!

profitsbeard on August 9, 2012 at 10:36 PM

Where was Romney the day Obama’s father supposedly died in a drunk driving accident?

profitsbeard on August 9, 2012 at 10:38 PM

We should have a pool for the date that Mitt’s Mormonism is officially attacked. I am thinking somewhere in mid-September.

Mutnodjmet on August 9, 2012 at 7:12 PM

Later. There’s too much pushback to something like that, but it will take a few weeks to get rolling. Late October – say second or third week. The groundwork has already been in process for months. They need the stories already in place in “reputable” sources, so that they can quote without looking like it’s their own research.

If the pushback is too hard, it might tip the scales the wrong way… and that’s the only thing the Obama campaign is worried about.

When you start hearing about Judy Dushku again, you’ll know it’s time.

can’t quite believe they’d go after Mormonism, even obliquely, just because it’d be so glaring a betrayal of Bambi’s cuddly 2008 persona that it really might dent his image permanently.

This is his last election. He has nothing left to worry about. And it will (of course) be done by proxies. The SuperPAC has them all lined up and ready to fire.

Sometimes I wish I could believe I was being paranoid about this.

Sure, if you’re an aficionado of propaganda and the art of lying to oneself and an audience.
